DivX DVD Player Question
I bought a fairly inexpensive DVD Player that has the capability of playing DivX files (.avi, etc.)... however, any file I've tried either has those damn blocks appearing sometimes (called artifacts I think?), or just skips like 5-10 seconds of the video at random times. I don't get a problem playing the file on my computer, so I had a question:
Is this an indication of the quality of my DVD player, or are there no "perfect" DivX DVD players out there yet? Thanks. |

Check to see wether your player has a region code. I own a Philips DVP642, and have no problem with any .avi, divx, mp3, and mpeg files, or regular DVD's. Here is a helpful site that may get you going in the right direction http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers john |

Thanks. I tried the LG LDA-530 and it has been working great so far. I'll be returning the crappy one I bought.

Excellent, glad to hear another good opinion on the DVP642, I plan on trying to pick one up this weekend. Sounds like it's a good one, and reasonably priced as well. I want a Divx player! How's the quality on these work? I know it does some sorta on the fly thing, but I'm curious how well it works? |

With the LG I bought, the quality has been 1:1 what I see on my computer. So I'd give it two thumbs up. I've had a sync problem once so far, but rewinding back to where the sync started managed to fix it. I've even been able to do the 100x fast forward and the audio being in sync when I play again. |

The quality is very good. A lot depends on the quality of your file(avi, divx, mpeg, etc), if your starting file is top notch so is the playback on the DVP642. I have been able to play anything thrown at mine and have never had a problem. I've been able to use burned(backups) DVD without failure too. The only drawback, and it's not really a big one, is the DVP642 will only use 8X maximum for fast forward and fast reverse. As for me, that doesn't bother me one bit, especially compared to all of the pluses this player has going for it. It's great when you can download a file and copy it as data to a DVD+R, and then slap it in your player and hit play, without having to convert anything. John |
