Vacation
I'm trying to plan a vacation for next June or July. I can take between 7 and 14 days off work. I have $10,000 but am taking my wife with me. She has suggested a cruise (she went on a Hawaii cruise in August).
I like history, other cultures, and fairly comfortable environments. I don't mind taking some risk but do not want to end up in a third world country where a revolution breaks out. My wife likes beaches, sunsets and all manner of girly garbage. I'd prefer it not to be hot and humid, but will live with it if it is somewhere that both of us would enjoy. Where I have been: Pacific Northwest, Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, California, Southwest USA, Mountain states (Colorado, Montana, Utah, etc...), Northeast (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire), New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, D.C. (lived there), North Carolina, Florida and Mexico. My wife has been to all of those places except Florida but has also been to: Texas, Hawaii, London, Scottland, France, and Italy. Any suggestions? Thanks, Aaron |

What do you enjoy ? As someone who's from and lived in many of those "third world" countries, my initial impression is that anything outside the US isn't for you. Go down to the Bahamas or Aruba ?

I think with that budget, you won't have much trouble finding something.

I think from your description that your wife is right: A cruise would be perfect. It will give you the comfortable envoirnments aboard the ship while allowing you to see other cultures and places. It will also give your wife plenty of opportunity to do girly things. I would recommend a European cruise as you have both the budget and time to do such a cruise.

Me too Personally, I'm looking forward to doing a cruise with the wife in a year or two once we've bought our house. Good luck with the vacation planning. |

I don't want to stay in the United States, but would like to go to some place relatively safe for Americans. We have looked at New Zealand and Western Europe. I'm pushing for Japan but am not sure what areas would be fun. I think I'm looking for some place that I can try something new or learn a little about another area of the world. My wife wants a place where she can lay on a beach, go dancing, and watch sunsets while enjoying a nice dinner. My best vacation was to Banff Canada where I spent the week searching out and photographing wildlife (I grew up in the Cascade mountains so the hiking around and off road driving combined with a nice resort town where we enjoyed a nice local band-that was very anti-American-good beer and some tourist type shopping areas/towns was a good compromise). If my wife wasn't going I'd take my dad to the Great Slave Lake in northern Canada and try to catch a big fish. My other top vacation was a west coast tour of baseball parks (Colorado, Arizona, San Diego, Anaheim, Oakland, San Francisco, and Seattle). We also had a nice vacation in Mexico where we stayed at a resort town the entire time (a little boring for me). |

It sounds like Australia or New Zealand is the place for you. I've never been, but it sounds like a good combination of what you're looking for. (beaches for the wife, new things for you to see, people with skin lighter than a paper bag...just kidding about that last part)
Each member of my family that has gone there doesn't want to come back.
