J-E-T-S New York Jets - Rewind Dynasty 2005

Jets Rewind Dynasty 2005

As the Jets season of 2005 comes to an end, I look at it and realize that my home town team will just never put it together. After a promising 2004 season the team has fallen apart after several questionable moves during the off season that has resulted in the team faltering. In the team’s defense, the quarterback position has been a nightmare. However, the rest of the team looks like it need to be blown up and rebuilt.

What I am setting out to do is rewind to the 2004 season, and have the team fall apart. Instead of the team finishing 10-6 and making a run in the playoffs, the schedule and results will be altered to show a 6-10 season for the second straight year, and the ownership to clear out the front office, and bring myself in to correct it.

I will be playing the game using the Full X-Factor, to give me random results with the player files, especially with the new draftees. I have also gone into the game and relocated the Jets to New York and got them out of New Jersey (wishful thinking; that was recently destroyed by the announcement the Jets are staying in Jersey with the Giants).

In order to accomplish this a lot of early work will be necessary. This dynasty will feature articles that have been recreated to show the fall of the Oscar Christianson (in game),(Herman Edwards) era, and will show the disgruntled New Yorkers expressing there opinions that Herm and the rest of the front office needs to go.

Following the stage being set, I will need to recreate the rosters. I was fortunate enough to receive the CSV roster format from Yabanci, thank you. His rosters will be used as a base for my recreation of the 2005 season. I will attempt to keep all the other teams’ moves exact, but it may be necessary to alter their rosters at points where I feel I may make my moves. However, if I do make a move that affects another team, I will do something to keep that team from feeling the effects, such as, find a player with similar abilities or edit a couple of their current players’ attributes.

My roster moves and draft selections will be based on research provided from numerous articles and analysis. I will not be making decisions based on the roster file’s numbers.

Rams top Jets in OT

NFL.com wire reports

ST. LOUIS (Jan. 2, 2005) -- St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz couldn't care less that his team finished .500. Somehow, they are in the playoffs.

The Rams clinched a postseason berth when Jeff Wilkins kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime to beat the New York Jets 32-29. They got a little help earlier in the day when Minnesota lost.

Torry Holt lived up to his nickname of "Big Game" with seven catches for 116 yards and two TDs.

"This is why you coach, for moments like this," Martz said after the Rams extended their up-and-down season. "It really is."

The Rams (8-8) won a finale that, in the end, they needed much more than the Jets. For much of the game, they played more like the team that was supposed to be one of best in the NFC than the seemingly crumbling franchise that had lost four of five entering the final weekend.

Now they will play at Seattle in the first round at 4:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 8. St. Louis won both regular-season meetings.

"We've just had a million things go wrong, and goofy things happen all year," offensive guard Adam Timmerman said. "We kept fighting and fighting, and to get in the playoffs is one of those really sweet things."

"I hate to lose, and close out our season like that," coach Oscar Christianson said.

Marc Bulger went 29-for-39 for 450 yards and three touchdowns, and Wilkins won it with 3:03 left in overtime for the Rams' fourth playoff berth in five seasons under Martz.

They also lost wide receiver Wayne Chrebet (concussion) in the first half, but Chrebet is expected to play next week.

Shaun Ellis had three sacks for the Jets. He also tipped a pass that Jonathan Vilma returned 38 yards for a score to give the Jets a 26-21 lead late in the third quarter.

"The feeling would have been a lot better had we won," Ellis said. "Obviously, our mood is of disapointment, this season unraveled on us, and now we have to look forward to next season."

Curtis Martin had 153 yards on 28 carries, winning the NFL rushing title with 1,697 yards by 1 yard over Shaun Alexander of the Seahawks while moving into fourth place on the NFL career rushing list. The Jets played to win in overtime, keeping Chad Pennington and Martin on the field. Doug Brien's miss on a 53-yard field goal attempt opened the door for the Rams' final drive.

St. Louis got great field position at its 43, and Bulger needed only five plays to get the Rams in position for Wilkins' game-winner. Wilkins split the uprights on first down after Bulger's 22-yard swing pass to Steven Jackson.

The Rams won with a revived offense, scoring more than 20 points for the first time in seven weeks. They had scoring drives of three plays and one play in the first half, including a 44-yard catch by Torry Holt near the end of the half right after a Jets punt.

St. Louis appeared to have taken control early in the third quarter when Jackson broke a pair of tackles on a 20-yard run that made it 21-10. But the Jets quickly recaptured the momentum.

Jerricho Cotchery returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to cut the gap to four. Less than a minute later, Jason Ferguson stripped Isaac Bruce after a reception and Donnie Abraham recovered to set up a 33-yard field goal by Brien.

Vilma's 38-yard return then put the Jets ahead 26-21.

"It wasn't here-we-go-again, that's just the way football is," Bulger said. "It's just a matter of stopping the bleeding."

St. Louis retook the lead with 5:06 remaining in regulation, when two Jets defenders collided, allowing Torry Holt to break free on a 19-yard TD reception. Jackson's conversion run made it a 3-point lead, but the Jets tied it when Brien kicked a 27-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in regulation.

The New York Jets came into the 2004 season with high expectations, however, those expectations would sink during the season. The team came off its second consecutive 6-10 season, and many people are questioning whether or not Oscar Christianson and Terry Bradway will be back.

Off-Season Questions

Some Off-Season Questions

What went wrong? The obvious answer was the injury to Chad Pennington on November 7th against Buffalo. Pennington never fully recovered from his shoulder injury as expected. When Pennington went down it appeared that the team was on the verge of raising their record to 5-3, however, when Chad went down against the Bills the team was unable to keep its lead and fell to 4-4. Carter would do an admirable job leading the team to 2-2 in Pennington’s absence, however, at 6-6 the Jets would face the toughest part of their schedule. Pennington would make his return against Pittsburgh in an effort to lift the team, they would fail miserably as the Jets offense was held to just 6 points. Similar results would follow during the next three games and the Jets would finish the season by dropping their final four, and finishing at 6-10 for the second straight season.

Many in the media and organization began to question some of the decisions that led to the team’s demise. Some wondered if Oscar should have left Chad out for the final four games and perhaps Carter could have done more, others still questioned the changes that happen two seasons ago when the Redskins lured away several key offensive players, others wondered if Herm lost the team when they lost Chad.

Either way this off-season should be one of interest. The team is now led by an injured quarterback, a 30+ year old running back, an aging offensive line with a left tackle who has a bum back, a star defensive end who has balked at the team’s contract offers and appears to be heading out to free agency and an aging secondary that was continuously beat late in the season.

Bradway Fired

Hempstead, NY (Jan. 8, 2005) - Just a few days after speculation that Oscar Christianson was going to be relieved of his duties, Woody Johnson let go of the General Manager, Terry Bradway. In a statement released by Johnson, he stated that the organization needs to head in another direction. The fans of the New York Jets expect this team to be in the playoffs, and after two disappointing seasons we need to get this team back to where it was heading a few seasons ago. Johnson will address the media later today.

Speculation is coming out of the Jets complex that Oscar Christianson could be relieved of his duties as early as this week as well. Rumors have been that Christianson was unhappy with his contract situation, and after another 6-10 finish, it appears that Christianson will not get the contract extension he desired.

The combination of Bradway and Christianson had a good first two years together, earning a wild card berth and a division title, but after two disappointing seasons, people are begining to wonder if their early success is due to the team that Parcells left behind some three years earlier.

While players cleaned out their lockers today business appeared as usual, coaches and players saying good by, and many wondering what will happen this off season.

Christianson Relieved of His Duties

Hempstead, NY (Jan. 14, 2005) - Christianson officially was released from his final two years of his contract earlier today after the firing of Terry Bradway. Speculation around the Jets complex was that Christianson wanted a contract extension. Bradway and Johnson scoffed at his request, some feel that Bradway did not want to give his coach security when he was feeling the pressure as well.

When Bradway was released earlier this week, it sealed Christianson's faith. Christianson knew that in all likelihood a new General Manager would want to bring in his own coach. Christianson's agent and owner, Woody Johnson worked out the details that allows Chrisitianson to move on.

There have been some strong indications coming out of Philadelphia that Andy Reid will move off the field and into the front office following the season, and that he has a strong liking to the Philadelphian native, Christianson. Remeber Christianson started his career with Philadelphia as a defensive back in the 1970's.

Jets Search For General Manager

Seek Marra from New England

Hemstead, NY (Jan. 15, 2005)- The Jets will interview what is believed to be their top canidate, Michael Marra from New England tomorrow morning. Michael Marra is in New England’s front office as the Vice President of Player Personnel. He joined the Patriots on Feb. 10, 2000 and worked in concert with Head Coach Ralph Amberg to build some of the most successful teams in NFL history. After arriving in New England, it took the pair just two seasons to rebuild the foundation of the team and to successfully implement their shared football philosophy. After orchestrating the franchise's first Super Bowl victory following the 2001 season, Marra and Amberg have executed a plan to produce continued success. Now, the Jets hope they can land the personnel guru to rebuild their roster and bring the Jets to success.

Jets Plan to Hire Marra

Hempstead, NY (January 17, 2005) - It appears that owner Woody Johnson is prepared to offer the General Manager position to Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel, Michael Marra. The situation has become complicated right now with New England still in the playoffs. The Patriots are preparing for their divisional playoff game this week with, the Indianapolis Colts.

The Patriots granted the Jets permission to interview Marra, however, they want him to be aboard until their season is completed. If the Patriots make a run in the playoffs and win their third Super Bowl in four years, the Jets can find themselves further behind in their search for a coaching staff.

It is believed that the Jets short list from Marra includes, Kurt Mundt (SD Def Coord.), Gene Mauk (Wash Off Coord), Ronald Kwiecinski (Den Off Coord), College Coaches, Corey Strauss (Iowa), and Fresno State's David Frederick.

Jets Will Have to Wait

Hempstead, NY (Jan. 23, 2005) - The Jets front office has remained quiet as the team continues its "search" for a new general manager. Assistant Head Coach, Mike Westhoff has been running the day to day operations with the staff, consisting of player evaluation and analysis of the season.

Speaking with Westhoff, "It has been a difficult three weeks, after our disappointing season, and now we do not have a head coach or general manager in place, it is difficult to make plans when we do not know the direction of this organization yet. Woody is trying to keep us up beat and continues to reinsure us that we will be fine."

Woody Johnson continues to be present at the Jets facility to keep the staff up beat, and he continues to have preliminary talks with possible general manager candidates and representatives of possible coaching canidates. Johnson will not comment on who the Jets are going to hire for general manager, stating, "at this time we have ran the process, however, we are not in position to move forward."

Speculation continues to swirl that Johnson has made his decision to hire Marra away from New England.

As expected, rumors in are that Coach Andy Reid will step down as coach following the season and move to the President/General Manager position of the organization. Rumors are that Philadelphia owner, Jefferie Lurie would love to bring Christianson back to Philadelphia as Head Coach, commenting this week that he thinks Christianson has done a commendable job with a team that had an injured quarterback and depleted offensive line this season. It is figured that Christianson could be hired following the end of the Eagles season and succeed Andy Reid who will moved upstairs as President and General Manager of the Eagles.

Jets Hire GM

Hempstead, NY (Jan. 25, 2005) - Late last night the Jets and Marra concluded their discussions and came upon an agreement that will make Marra the Jets next general manager. Following the Patriots victory Sunday in the AFC Championship game with the Steelers, owner Woody Johnson contacted Robert Kraft and informed him that he would like to hire Marra. Kraft gave the Jets and Marra permission to work out their details of their deal through Thursday before Marra is to report back to New England's facility to help evaluate personnel for the Super Bowl in less than two weeks at Jacksonville.

The past two weeks, speculation was that the Jets would hire Marra at the first opportunity that presented itself. Now Marra will begin the process of rebuilding the Jets. The primary objective of Marra’s personnel philosophy is to build a team, not to simply collect individual talent. As a result, the Patriots have been able to prosper despite the NFL realities of injuries and the salary cap, which have proven in the past to be impediments to long-term success in pro football. In 2003 and 2004, the depth and versatility of New England’s roster helped overcome key injuries and win a total of 34 games, the most in NFL history over a two-year span. In 2003, the Patriots were forced to use 42 different starters, the most in league history by a division champion. Just one season later, the Patriots employed 40 different starters as they advanced to their second consecutive Super Bowl. Of the 53 players on the Patriots' Super Bowl XXXIX roster, 47 were acquired by Marra and Amberg and 34 were acquired since the Patriots' first championship in 2001. In an era of NFL parity and economic balance, the Patriots' personnel philosophy has helped to consistently build championship teams that have been greater than the sum of their parts. Over the last five years, the Patriots have used an effective combination of free agent signings, trades and draft picks to acquire championship-caliber players. Players drafted by Amberg and Marra have earned a total of three Super Bowl MVP awards and five Pro Bowl berths, while the Patriots' starting lineup for Super Bowl XXXIX includes 10 of their draftees in addition to two players signed as undrafted free agents. Veteran free agents signed by Amberg and Marra include defensive co-captain Rodney Harrison, outside linebackers Mike Vrabel and Rosevelt Colvin and three-time Pro Bowl special teams captain Larry Izzo among dozens of other contributors to New England’s championship squads. New England's trades have netted improvement in drafting position that led to the ability to exchange draft picks for key veterans such as Corey Dillon, who set the Patriots’ single-season rushing record in 2004, and Ted Washington, an important contributor to the 2003 title team.

As vice president of player personnel there, Marra’s responsibilities included overseeing the college draft and free agency, as well as serving as the Patriots' primary contract negotiator. Since he arrived in New England, he has shown a propensity for finding veteran free agents who can contribute and play important roles in building playoff-contending teams. Since 2000, the Patriots have signed dozens of veteran free agents. In 2001 alone, the team’s class of 17 veteran free agents produced two team captains, seven full-time starters, three special teams specialists and two veteran nickel backs. The veteran leadership was critical to the Patriots' success that year, as the team completed its divisional worst-to first turnaround and set the then-franchise record of nine consecutive victories to close out the season as Super Bowl Champions. His successes that season earned him league-wide recognition as one of the best young personnel evaluators in the game.
In 2003, the Patriots signed a dozen veteran free agents, including Harrison and Tyrone Poole, and traded a fourth-round draft choice for Washington to help fortify a defense that led the league and set a franchise record by allowing just 14.9 points per game (238 total) and posted three shutouts to establish another team record. In addition, the team drafted seven players who made first-year contributions, including two who became season- long starters.

Marra's personnel blueprint was again successful in 2004. The Dillon trade resulted in one of the most prolific rushing seasons in team history, and the signing of veteran free agents such as Keith Traylor and Josh Miller helped to shore up positions of need. Additionally, rookies Vince Wilfork and Randall Gay are both among the team's 11 defensive starters in Super Bowl XXXIX. Marra began his NFL career when the Jets hired him as the pro personnel assistant in 1998. In New York, he was responsible for the evaluation of both college prospects and veteran free agents. The first season saw the Jets set a franchise record with twelve wins and reach the AFC Championship game. The following season, the Jets overcame numerous injuries to win eight games. His early success in New York led Amberg to hire him in New England in February 2000.

Michael was born on June 25, 1973 in a small suberb of Long Island. Michael and his wife, Diane have two children, Matthew, 3 and Brian, 1.

Marra Press Conference

Hempstead, NY (Jan. 26, 2005)

Woody Johnson - Thank you all for coming today. We are here to announce that last evening the Jets organization and Michael Marra have reached an agreement that will have Marra running the Jets organization for many years to come. Marra comes here with an impressive track record after spending time with the Jets in 1998 to 2000 before moving to New England and now coming back home. Marra will be with us today and tomorrow before joining up with New England in Jacksonville for the Super Bowl. He will return back to the Jets following the Super Bowl on Monday, February 6th. At that time we will begin the process of interviewing coaching canidates. So without further to do, Michael Marra

Michael Marra - Thank you Mr. Johnson, I am excited to be here today. New York is an exciting city with loyal fans, Jet fans are some of the loyalist fans in the country. This is an organization that has been on the brink so many times, only to have a set back. My goal is to put the things in place to prevent those set backs. I am excited about the challenge and look forward to getting this franchise back on the winning track.

Reporter - Welcome, how is the hiring process going to work?

Marra - Before I depart to Jacksonville to finish with New England, a list of potential canidates will be established. Over the next two days we will contact any canidates who can be contacted, or seek teams permission to explore their interest in interviewing for the Head Coach position. Hopefully this process moves swiftfly.

Reporter - Who will you be contacting?

Marra - At this time we are not in position to comment on that, simply, no one has been contacted yet.

Reporter - Will you be interviewing and assistant coaches?

Marra - Yes, however, they have not been informed yet, thus, I cannot inform you.

Reporter - Have you had the opportunity to study the players yet?

Marra - I am familiar with many of the players right now. When a staff is in place we will work together to help find the players that are needed.

Reporter - Are you concerned about the time frame you are under?

Marra - When a team's season ends it is always your goal to be better next season. You always wish you had more time to prepare your roster through free agency and the draft, however, it does come upon you quickly. The next month however, we will due our due dilligence to prepare.

Reporter - Some of the question marks involve the quarteback position, specifically the injury of Chad Pennington, and the contract status of John Abraham. Have you had the opportunity to address these situations yet?

Marra - No, I have not. I do know Chad Pennington is scheduled for surgery, and from what I have been told thus far they expect him to be ready for the season. John Abraham is a great pass rusher, that is a benefit to have on your team, however, we do have to address is contract situation.

Reporter - When will you be leaving for Jacksonville?

Marra - I will be departing tomorrow evening (Jan. 27th) and returning back to the Jets' offices on the 7th of February.

Reporter - Will you be able to conduct any business for the Jets in between?

Marra - The agreement that the Jets worked out was that I cannot conduct any business after 5PM on January 27th, until February 7th at 12:01AM. The purpose of me having these three days with the Jets was to establish a list for our front office to work on over the next week and a half.

Jets Press Secretary - Ladies and Gentlemen at this time we do have to conclude our press conference. Thank you, we look forward to seeing you at the announcement of our next head coach.

Tom Brady's passing and Corey Dillon's running helped New England win its third Super Bowl.
Deion Branch had 11 receptions for 133 yards and the Patriots’ defense forced four turnovers en route to becoming the eighth team to post consecutive Super Bowl titles. The Patriots matched the Dallas Cowboys (XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX) as the only teams with three Super Bowl victories in the span of four seasons.
The Eagles threatened first, driving to the Patriots’ 8 late in the first quarter. On first down, Mike Vrabel sacked Donovan McNabb for a 16-yard loss and, after a penalty overturned an interception, Rodney Harrison stepped in front of a pass for an interception at the Patriots’ 4.
Early in the second quarter the Eagles drove 81 yards, keyed by Todd Pinkston’s 40-yard catch, and capped by McNabb’s 6-yard touchdown pass to L.J. Smith on third-and-goal for a 7-0 lead.
The Patriots responded by driving to the Eagles’ 4, but Tom Brady fumbled on a fake handoff attempt and Darwin Walker recovered. Later in the quarter, a 29-yard punt by Dirk Johnson allowed the Patriots to drive just 37 yards, keyed by Branch’s 7-yard catch on third-and-3, and capped by Brady’s pass to David Givens on the right side of the end zone to tie the game with 1:10 left in the half.
New England began the second half with a 9-play, 69-yard drive, including four receptions, two on third down, by Branch, and capped by Vrabel’s 2-yard catch.
The Eagles put together a 10-play, 74-yard drive later in the third quarter, keyed by Brian Westbrook’s 4-yard catch on third-and-3, and followed on the next play by his 10-yard touchdown catch to tie the game.
On the ensuing drive, Kevin Faulk caught screen passes of 13 and 14 yards, and had a 12-yard run, and Corey Dillon capped the possession with a 2-yard run with 13:44 remaining for a 21-14 lead.
The Patriots’ defense forced a three-and-out, and Branch’s 19-yard catch set up Adam Vinatieri’s 22-yard field goal with 8:40 to play. Tedy Bruschi intercepted McNabb’s pass at the Patriots’ 24 with 7:20 remaining.
The Eagles forced a punt, and beginning at their own 21 with 5:40 to play, needed 13 plays to drive 79 yards, capped by McNabb’s 30-yard touchdown pass on a post-pattern to Greg Lewis with 1:48 to play.
Christian Fauria recovered the onside kick, but the Eagles’ defense forced a punt. Dexter Reid downed Josh Miller’s 32-yard punt at the Eagles’ 4 with 46 seconds left, and Harrison intercepted McNabb’s pass three plays later to clinch the title.
Brady was 23 of 33 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Branch earned MVP honors with his Super Bowl-record-tying 11 catches.
McNabb was 30 of 51 for 357 yards and three touchdowns, with three interceptions. Terrell Owens had nine receptions for 122 yards.

Jets Interview Iowa's Strauss

Strauss to Coach Jets?

Hempstead, NY (Feb. 11, 2005) - The Jets front office hopes their trip to Iowa will land them the team's next head coach in Iowa Hawkeyes' Coach, Corey Strauss. Marra and members of the front office met all week with several canidates to fill the vacancy including Kurt Mundt (San Diego Defensive Coordinator), Gene Mauk (Washington Offensive Coordinator), Ronald Kwiecinski (Denver's Offesive Coordinator), and James Norris (Dallas Offensive Coordinator). Because of the change in the front office the Jets missed the opportunity to interview Mickey Archibald, who landed in Cleveland from New England. From Iowa the team is traveling to Fresno State to speak with David Frederick as perhaps their fall back option. There are rumors that if the team does get an agreement with Strauss they will still go to visit Frederick in an attempt to persuade him to come to New York as the Offensive Coordinator. Frederick worked with Strauss in Cleveland under Ralph Amberg.

Strauss to Coach Jets

Jets Land Iowa’s Corey Strauss

Hempstead, NY ( February 12, 2005) – The Jets announced the hiring of former Iowa Hawkeye’s Coach, Corey Strauss. Strauss signed a four year deal worth a reported eleven million dollars. This will be Strauss’ first NFL Head Coaching Position.
Strauss comes to the Jets after seven years as Iowa's head football coach. Under the direction of Strauss and his staff, the Iowa football program enjoyed its greatest success ever over the past three seasons. Iowa has compiled a 31-7 record in that time, winning at least 10 games each season and sharing the Big Ten title in 2002 and 2004. The Hawkeyes were 11-2 in 2002, 10-3 in 2003 and 10-2 a year ago. Iowa's 20 Big Ten victories are also the most for an Iowa team in any three year span.
Strauss is 42-31 in six seasons at Iowa and his career mark is 54-52 in nine seasons as a collegiate head coach. His Big Ten record is 27-21.
The Hawkeyes have finished eighth nationally in the final rankings in each of the last three years, joining Southern Cal, Oklahoma and Georgia as the only teams with that distinction. The Hawkeyes were the highest rated Big Ten Conference team at the end of the 2005 bowl season.
Strauss, as was the case in 2002, earned the Dave McClain Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year honor. Strauss is one of just seven Big Ten coaches ever to guide a team to 10 wins or more in three straight seasons.
On a national scale, Iowa's record over the past three campaigns ranks eighth best in the nation. Iowa ranks eighth in the nation in winning percentage (.816) over the past three seasons, ninth (.760) over the past four seasons and 10th (.800) over the past two years.
Under Strauss and his staff, Hawkeye players have gathered all-Big Ten and national recognition at a record pace. Four Hawkeye players have earned national Player of the Year honors at their position in the past three seasons. Those include offensive lineman Robert Gallery (Outland Trophy), place kicker Nate Kaeding (Lou Groza Award), quarterback Brad Banks (Davey O'Brien Award and AP Player of the Year) and tight end Dallas Clark (John Mackey Award). Banks was also the runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2002.
Another part of Iowa's success under Strauss is reflected in the three most recent NFL drafts. In each of the past three drafts, five Iowa players have been selected, including six selections in the top 50 picks. In addition, Five Hawkeye players signed NFL free agent contracts the day after the 2003 draft, nine signed free agent contracts immediately following the 2004 draft and three signed in 2005.
Over the past six seasons, 40 of 46 senior starters under Corey Strauss, have been selected in the NFL Draft or signed to an NFL free agent contract.
Robert Gallery was the second selection in the 2004 NFL Draft, while Bob Sanders was selected in the second round as the first pick of the Indianapolis Colts. Nate Kaeding, a third round selection of the San Diego Chargers, became the first kicker since 2000 (and just the sixth ever) to be selected on the first day of the draft.
Iowa ranks second among Big Ten teams in number of players drafted over the past four years, having 18 players selected in that time. In the 2005 NFL Draft, DE Matt Roth and DT Jonathan Babineaux were second round selections and DB Sean Considine was selected in the fourth round.
Strauss’ resume includes being named Iowa's 25th head football coach on December 2, 1998. Strauss has been a collegiate head coach nine years. He joined the Iowa staff after serving as assistant head coach and offensive line coach of the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. He had been a part of the Baltimore (Cleveland Browns prior to the move) organization for six years. Strauss was a member of Hayden Fry's Iowa staff for nine years as offensive line coach (1981-89). Corey’s coaching career began as a student assistant (1977) at his alma mater, Connecticut. The next two years (1978-79) were spent at Worcester Academy, where Corey also taught English literature. He served as a graduate assistant offensive line coach at Pittsburgh during the 1980 season. That Pittsburgh team (coached by Jackie Sherrill) finished with an 11-1 record and a number two national ranking. He was named head coach of the Maine Bears in 1990 and held that position for three years before being hired by Ralph Amberg and the Cleveland Browns.
Strauss’ next order of business is to retool his staff. It is believed that Strauss is interested in retaining Grady Coppa as the Defensive Coordinator after Coppa’s first year with the Jets was successful from a defensive standpoint. He will begin the process shortly.

Jets QB Pennington has shoulder surgery

NFL.com wire reports
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2005) -- Jets quarterback Chad Pennington had surgery to repair a tear in his right rotator cuff, and his doctors are cautiously optimistic he will be ready for the start of training camp in July.
NFL Network

Dr. James Andrews performed the arthroscopic surgery in Birmingham, Ala. Pennington needs three to four weeks of full rest with his arm in a sling and then three to four months of range-of-motion physical therapy.
Andrews gave full details of the surgery to team doctor Elliot Pellman.
"There were no surprises found during the procedure," General Manager, Michael Marra said. "According to the report Dr. Andrews gave to Dr. Pellman, the operation was a success."
Pennington played the final seven games of last season with a tear in the muscle of the rotator cuff, which the Jets initially said was a strain. The Jets went 2-5 in that span, and Pennington looked shaky, constantly underthrowing or overthrowing receivers.

Strauss Keeps Grady Coppa Aboard to run the Defense

Grady Coppa was named the Jets’ defensive coordinator on January 26, 2004. He led the Defense to a top-10 ranking during the 2004 season using a combination of a 3-4 and 4-3 defense. Now, he sets his sights to completing the team’s transition to a straight 3-4 defense, which he perfected near the end of his tenure with Baltimore. Prior to joining the Jets, the Baltimore, MD native served the previous five seasons (1999-2003) as the secondary/assistant secondary coach for the Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore finished in the top 10 in the League in pass defense in three of the four seasons he served as a secondary coach. Since 2000 BAL has recorded 88 INT, second best in the NFL over that span. He has also coached three players to four Pro Bowl appearances during his tenure (Rod Woodson 2, Chris McAlister 1, Ed Reed 1). In 2000, the World Champion Ravens’ defense set 16-game NFL records including fewest points allowed (165) and fewest rushing yards allowed (970), the secondary, led by S Rod Woodson, who was named to his ninth Pro Bowl, set a team mark with 23 INT and led the NFL with 49 takeaways. Baltimore allowed only 11 TD passes in 20 games (tops in the NFL). In 2002, the Ravens finished second in the NFL in overall defense and eighth against the pass, the secondary intercepted 12 passes (plus two more in the postseason), forced six fumbles and recovered six more. Before joining the Ravens, Coppa spent the 1998 season coaching DB at the University of Houston. While at Houston, he was promoted to assistant head coach. Coppa spent six seasons (1992-97) on the Arizona State staff, coaching S from 1992-94 and DB from 1995-97, two years (1990-91) coaching LB at the University of California… prior to that, Coppa was recruiting coordinator and DB coach at the University of Idaho in 1989. He started his collegiate coaching career at his alma

Jets Hire Fresno State’s David Frederick to be Offensive Coordinator

The Jets have brought another part from Amberg’s tree, David Frederick signed on to work with friend Corey Strauss and run the Jets offense in 2006. The Jets met with Frederick following their interview with Strauss. During the interview the Jets inquired Frederick's interest in coming back to the NFL as a coordinator under friend, Corey Strauss. Had Strauss not accepted the Head Coach position, the Jets were set to hire Frederick. Frederick believes that he can use this as a spring board to a head coaching position in the NFL after leaving Fresno State, a football program he had revamped in his vision.

Under Frederick, the program had received national attention as one of the top mid-major teams in the nation. And right now, the prospects for the Fresno State football program have never been better. The Bulldogs finished the 2004 season ranked 22nd in the nation, the first time since 1993 that happened.

The Bulldogs won their last six games, averaging 52.8 points in each. In the MPC Computers Bowl - Fresno State's sixth consecutive postseason game, the longest streak among western U.S. schools - Frederick led his underdog team to a 37-34 overtime upset of 18th-ranked Virginia, a win that would be his last at Fresno State.

Frederick took the Bulldogs to new heights in the Western Athletic Conference. His overall league record of 44-19 is one of the best in the WAC over the last eight seasons. Under Frederick, the Bulldogs have never lost more than three conference games in a season.

Frederick joined the Cleveland Browns in 1992 and spent five seasons in the organization, coaching tight ends and offensive line in addition to working in the personnel department evaluating players. Frederick would have been happy to remain in the NFL had the Fresno State job not opened a possibility for him. But now Frederick realizes this may be his last chance to achieve his goal of NFL coach. This may be the best avenue to that position, by becoming a coordinator.

Frederick began his coaching career as offensive line coach at Los Angeles Valley College from 1974-76, helping the Monarchs to a state junior college championship in 1975. He then served as offensive line coach at Utah from 1977-80 under Wayne Howard; was offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at UNLV from 1981-82 under Tony Knapp; and was offensive coordinator with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL in 1983 under Jack Gotta.

Jets Prepare for Free Agency

The Jets prepare for the first step in restucturing their roster for the 2005 season. Priorities for the team are to land a backup quarterback, backup running back and a cover corner to strenghthen the pass defense. Here is a breakdown of what the team will attempt to target:

The 2004 season is behind us and time to move forward. The staff is in place and now we need to focus on the 2005 season. There are many questions to answer, and changes need to be made.

At quarterback we are penciling in Pennington as the team’s starter, however, a veteran backup will be brought in to play as well. Jay Fiedler (Mia) or Kurt Warner (NYG) will be the targets. We will not bring back Quincy Carter under any circumstances due to addiction problem he suffered at the end of the 2004 season. The organization took a chance on Carter, and although he preformed admirably, his character flaws will not be accepted.

The possibilities of keeping free agent running back Lamont Jordan are slim. Jordan wants to be a starter, and although we did give it some thought of moving Martin and offering the starting job to Jordan, we just cannot let a player like Martin go yet. We still feel he has a solid couple of seasons left. We will look at free agent possibilities however to take some of the load off of Martin. Jesse Chatman (SD), Najeh Davenport (GB), and Derrick Blaylock (KC) are some possibilities.

We feel comfortable about the wide receiver position. McCareins stepped in nicely last season, and appears to have the size and hands necessary to be the possessive receiver that Pennington will need. Santana Moss had a sensational 2003 season, however, 2004 was a disappointment. Moss will be relied on to be the playmaker, and in the last year of his contract he will have to produce or will be able to move on. Chrebet, Carter and Cotchery gives the team depth.

Tight end is a position that will need addressing. Anthony Becht will have the opportunity to move on, after what can only be considered a disappointing five seasons with the Jets. Chris Baker will have the opportunity to compete for the starting position, and we will look to find another tight end through free agency to give Pennington a receiving option, something Becht could not provide. Possiblities are Marcus Pollard (Ind), Jeb Putzier (Den), and Stephen Alexander (Det).

The offensive line has a lot of holes to fill. Mawae is still solid at center, and Kendall did a nice job at guard, after that it gets thin. Fabini suffered an injury plagued 2004 season, and with persistent back problems, Fabini’s health is now a concern. We will sign a veteran to add depth, however, left tackle is a tough position to fill, and this may lead to the biggest question mark of the season. Right tackle Kareem McKenzie will be able to explore free agency. McKenzie’s asking price is too high in our opinion for a right tackle. The right tackle position will be filled by either one of last season’s rookie, Marko Cavka or Adrian Jones. We feel confident that one of them will step up. At right guard we will target free agents like Joe Andruzzi (NE) or Ben Hamilton (Den) to add strength to our line.

At kicker we will look to add a replacement for Doug Brien. Brien’s struggle last season will have him becoming a cap casualty. Possible replacements are Paul Edinger (Chi) and Jay Feeley (NYG).

Defense will see some changes, most noticeably John Abraham. Abraham who has shown signs of brilliance in his five season, has played just one complete season with the Jets. His recent troubles (DWI charge and questionable injury), will surely land him on the free agency market. We explored the option of franchising him, however, he drew little interest for in trade. At Defensive End we will look at possible replacements in Courtney Brown (Cle), Jarvis Green (NE), Travis Hall (Atl), and Vonnie Holiday (KC). Jason Ferguson will be able to leave through free agency as well, we are confident that Dwayne Robertson can play the nose tackle, and will add some depth through the draft or free agency.

At linebacker the team feels good about Vilma, Barton, and Hobson. Last season Thomas showed the ability to play in both coverage and on the line. Thomas will be converted to a linebacker this season. The team will look for depth through free agency and the draft. Some possibilities include Morlon Greenwood (Mia), Barry Gardner (Cle), Tommy Polley (StL), and Jamie Sharper (Hou).

At cornerback the team shot high for the 2004 season, and after rejections from Antonine Winfield (Min) and Fernando Bryant (Det) the team signed David Barrett from Arizona. Barrett had a solid season for the Jets and they now look to target another starting caliber cornerback with Donnie Abraham’s retirement. The free agent class of 2005 at corner is deep with Charles Woodson (Oak), Ty Law (NE), Gary Baxter (Bal), Andrew Dyson (Ten), Anthonry Henry (Cle), Samari Rolle (Ten) and Fred Smoot (Was). This figures to be an area the Jets will target as their first priority. Safety saw the emmurgence of surprise rookie, Erik Coleman last season, however strong safety is a concern. Possible targets are Pierson Prioleau (Buf) and Sammy Knight (Mia), but the free agent market is thin on marquee players here.

Jordan Signs with Raiders

Raiders sign RB Jordan to five-year deal

NFL.com wire reports

For more info on Jordan
ALAMEDA, Calif. (March 3, 2005) -- The Oakland Raiders finalized a five-year contract with free-agent running back LaMont Jordan to boost their ineffective ground game.

"He's excited about the opportunity to come in and be able to contribute on a team that he feels has the ability to get to the Super Bowl," Keels said. "He wants to be an important piece of that puzzle."

Jordan arrived in town March 2 to meet with the team, then signed his contract the morning of March 3.

Jordan, who spent his first four seasons with the New York Jets, carried 93 times for 479 yards and two touchdowns last season and also made 15 catches for 112 yards.

The Raiders are determined to revive their running game, and Jordan has been waiting to become a full-time back after playing behind Curtis Martin all his career. Jordan has a career average of 4.9 yards per carry.

Oakland rushed for only 1,295 yards on 328 carries last year. Each week, coach Norv Turner said he was committed to improving the Raiders' production on the ground, but they continued to struggle.

Finding a talented running back was one of the club's top priorities this offseason. Amos Zereoue was the team's most productive running back during the Raiders' 5-11 season, gaining 425 yards on 112 carries with three TDs -- fewer yards than Jordan produced as Martin's backup.

Tyrone Wheatley, second behind Zereoue, was released March 2, the same day the Raiders introduced star receiver Randy Moss.

Jets Sign Blaylock and Legree

March 4, 2005

Blaylock and Legree Sign

The New York Jets announced Friday morning the signing of RB Derrick Blaylock and DL Lance Legree. The announcements were made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Michael Marra.

Blaylock, a 5-9, 205-pound running back out of Stephen F. Austin, signed with the Jets after a four-year stint with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was selected in the fifth round (150th overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Chiefs and spent the next three seasons as part of a running back group that included Priest Holmes. Blaylock, a veteran of 40 NFL games, started five times last season in place of the injured Holmes. Given an opportunity, he ran for 539 yards and eight touchdowns including a four TD performance against Atlanta in October.

“I would describe myself as a slasher,” said Blaylock. “I am pretty quick to the hole. I have pretty nice moves and have a little power behind me. Don’t think I won’t drop the shoulder on a couple of guys.”
"Derrick is a versatile back," added Marra. "He is strong, has good quickness, and the ability to catch the football. He did a solid job playing behind Priest Holmes and has been a core special teams’ player."
For his career, Blaylock has run for 723 yards on 156 carries and amassed 10 rushing touchdowns. He is also a threat out of the backfield as evidenced by his 45 career receptions for 474 yards and two touchdowns. Blaylock has 28 career special teams tackles.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to be able to come in and play for the Jets,” said Blaylock. “I feel like this is a great organization and a great opportunity for me to step in and help the team hopefully get to the Super Bowl, the “Big Dance.”

The Jets moved quickly to find a backup for running back Curtis Martin after LaMont Jordan signed a big contract to play in Oakland for the Raiders. “LaMont Jordan and Derrick Blaylock are different people with two different running styles,” Blaylock said. “All I can do out is go and out play the game I know how to play. I am not going to worry about LaMont Jordan and what he did. I am just going to go out and play football and I guarantee the fans will appreciate the job I get done.”

Legree, a 6-1, 300-pound defensive lineman from Notre Dame, originally signed with the Giants as a free agent in 2001. The four-year veteran totaled 116 tackles (including 73 solo stops) six sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in the 60 games he played with the Giants.

"Lance is smart, tough and does a great job at the point of attack," Marra said. "Both players have competed in over 40 NFL games and give our Club depth at their respective positions."
Legree, who can play both tackle and end, figures to play more at the end for the Jets. After eight seasons in New York, Jason Ferguson signed with the Dallas Cowboys and a vacancy was created along the Jets’ talented front.

“I am in coming in as a defensive end and nose tackle,” Legree said. “I think I will be playing defensive end. I have the ability to play defensive tackle as well.”

Giants Sign McKenzie

Giants sign OT McKenzie

NFL.com wire reports

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (March 4, 2005) -- Offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie signed with the New York Giants, moving across town after spending the last four seasons with the Jets.

McKenzie, who started the last three seasons at right tackle, should provide immediate help to an offensive line that was shaky at best last season. The Jets were resigned to losing the 6-foot-6, 327-pound player after failing to sign him to a long-term deal during the season.

He is the third key free agent the Jets lost in the last two days, after backup running back LaMont Jordan went to Oakland and defensive tackle Jason Ferguson signed with Dallas.

The third-round pick out of Penn State in 2001 was considered one of the best tackles available on the free-agent market.

The Jets will now look at the possibility of the Steelers Oliver Ross, Lions Stokar McDougle, one of their 2004 draft picks or a pick in this year's draft.

Jets Sign Corner Henry

Hempstead, NY (March 7, 2005) The Jets have signed cornerback Anthony Henry from Cleveland. The Jets signed Henry for a reported 5 year deal worth $22.2 million with an included signing bonus of $11 million.

The 6'0" corner spent his first four seasons with the Browns after being drafted in the 4th round in 2001 from South Florida. Henry excels in man-to-man coverage and is expected to give the team a big boost in its pass defense. Henry was pursued by the Browns and Cowboys.

As the team took advantage of upgrading some positions such as corner and running back, they may have missed out on addressing the offensive line. Key O-Linemen free agents signed early and the Jets missed out on the opportunity to even meet with some. It started when the team lost out on resigning McKenzie, then followed by the signings of second tier right tackles Oliver Ross and Fred Miller signed elsewhere, the top guards are also signed, Joe Andruzzi signed with Cleveland and Ben Hamilton resigned with Denver. The Jets will now have to swith their focus at some lower level free agent linemen in the up and coming month.

Jets Miss out on Coleman

Browns add guard Cosey Coleman

NFL.com wire reports

For more info on Davis, Coleman, Sanders
CLEVELAND (March 8, 2005) -- The Cleveland Browns continued to rebuild their troubled offensive line, agreeing to terms on a two-year contract with former Tampa Bay guard Cosey Coleman. Coleman was scheduled to fly to New York after his meeting with Cleveland, cancelled his meeting with the Jets and signed with the Browns.

Coleman, a four-year starter with the Buccaneers, is the second free-agent guard signed by the Browns, whose offensive line has been a chronic problem since the team's expansion rebirth in 1999.

Last week, the Browns signed former New England Patriots guard Joe Andruzzi to a four-year deal.

The 6-foot-4, 322-pound Coleman, 26, visited the Browns as an unrestricted free agent last year but decided to re-sign with Tampa Bay for one season. He played every snap at right guard for the Bucs in 2004.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel made the interior of his offensive line the team's No. 1 priority this offseason, and Andruzzi and Coleman are a substantial upgrade over the parade of guards the club has shuffled in and out the past few seasons.

Giants boot Jets on bid for Feeley

Giants sign former Atlanta kicker Feely

NFL.com wire reports

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (March 8, 2005) -- Former Atlanta Falcons placekicker Jay Feely joined the New York Giants instead of the cross town rival New York Jets this offseason, signing a two-year contract.

"What we were really interested in was having a solid young kicker who we felt could solve the problems of kickoff and field goal accuracy and grow," coach Tom Coughlin said. "The better part of his career, I think, is going to start right now. We'd studied the young man, and we feel there are things we can do to help him in his game."

Feely hit 18 of 23 field goal attempts last season with the Falcons, the longest from 47 yards. He was perfect on 40 extra points.

Feely, 29, will be the Giants' third placekicker in as many seasons. He will replace 37-year-old Steve Christie. Matt Bryant was the kicker in 2003.

In four seasons with the Falcons, Feely scored 436 points, the third-highest total in franchise history. He made 98 of 127 field goal attempts and 142 of 144 extra points.

He also has 44 touchbacks on 317 career kickoffs, including 13 last season. Christie had two touchbacks last season, and the Giants have had only eight in the last four seasons.

The Jets are scheduled to work out kicker Joe Nedney, who has not played in nearly two seasons tomorrow. He hasn't kicked in a game since the 2003 season opener with Tennessee, when he was injured while making a tackle against Oakland. Nedney missed the rest of that season with a torn knee ligament -- and days before last season, he tore his left hamstring and missed the rest of the year.

Nedney has played for Miami, Arizona, Carolina, Oakland and Tennessee since joining the league as an undrafted free agent in 1996. He has made 74.7 percent of his field goal attempts and 98.5 percent of his extra points.

Broncos do not match Jets' offer for TE Putzier

NFL.com wire reports

DENVER (March 10, 2005) -- The Denver Broncos did not match the New York Jets' offer to restricted free agent Jeb Putzier. The Jets signed the tight end to a four year deal worth $10.7 million contract that included a $2 million signing bonus. The Jets will now have to forfeit a 6th round pick.

Putzier, who played all 16 games for Denver last season and had 36 catches for 572 yards and two touchdowns. As a player heading into his fourth year, Putzier became a free agent, but the Broncos had the right to match any offer he received. They chose not to and now will receive compensation.

Also, the Jets signed kicker Joe Nedney.

He will replace Doug Brien who figures to be released.

Hey Rich,

What did you get bored of winning all the time? I left the PNFL some time ago when I got hooked on FOF. The realism of GMing made me lose the interest in FBPRO. I am in an online league, NAFL and play the game solo, as you can see here by my dynasty. Looks like people are slowly losing interst in FBPRO, based on the decline in ownership.

Fiedler Returns Home
The New York Jets announced Friday the signing of unrestricted free agent NFL quarterback Jay Fiedler, a native of Oceanside, N.Y. The announcement was made by Jets’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Michael Marra.
“Jay is a veteran who has competed in the post season and gives our offense depth,” said Marra. “He knows the AFC East real well, and is a great competitor.”

Fiedler, 33, will be entering his 10th NFL season in 2005 and his first as a member of the New York Jets. The 6-2, 225 pound graduate of Dartmouth spent the previous five seasons with the Miami Dolphins (2000-’04). He originally broke into the NFL in 1994 as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles (1994-’95) and also played in 1998 with the Minnesota Vikings and in 1999 with the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining the Dolphins in 2000. Fiedler has played in 74 regular season NFL games, making 60 starts, and has attempted 1,704 passes with 1,000 completions for 11,737 yards and a completion percentage of 58.7 with 68 touchdown passes, 66 interceptions and a career passer rating of 76.9.

Among active quarterbacks in the NFL, Fiedler owns the fifth-best starting record (minimum 25 starts) with a 37-23 record for a .617 winning percentage mark. He is bested only by New England’s Tom Brady (.774), Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb (.709), Arizona’s Kurt Warner (.678) and Green Bay’s Brett Favre (.659). Fiedler also has three postseason starts to his credit, with a 1-2 mark in the playoff games.

In 2004, Fiedler was 101-190 for 1,186 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions for a passer rating of 67.1. He started seven games for the Dolphins and played in a reserve role once. He was placed on the Injured Reserve list on November 23 with a cervical disc herniation.
In addition to his passing skills, Fielder owns the highest single season rushing total for a Dolphin quarterback and ranks second to Bob Griese in both career rushing attempts (201) and rushing yards (834) and his 11 rushing touchdowns are a team-record.

LB Gardner Signs
The New York Jets announced Friday the signing of unrestricted free agent linebacker Barry Gardner. The announcement was made by Jets’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Michael Marra.

Gardner, a 6-1, 245 pound six-year veteran of the NFL, comes to the Jets after having most recently played the past two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He broke into the NFL as a second round draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999 after a standout collegiate career for the Northwestern Wildcats. For his career Gardner has played in 94 career games, making 23 starts, and has compiled 266 career tackles, 116 special teams stops, seven passes defensed, along with two sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception and one fumble recovery.

In 2004, Gardner appeared in 14 games, while missing two contests midway through the season due to a groin injury, and registered 31 tackles and started the final five games of the season. He had a season-high 14 tackles in game 14 vs. San Diego and recorded his first career interception in game 12 at Cincinnati when he snared a Carson Palmer pass and returned the ball 30-yards to the Cincinnati one-yard line.

Gardner, a native of Harvey, IL was a collegiate walk-on at Northwestern and went on to become the school’s second all-time leading tackle leader with 468 tackles and first with seven fumble recoveries.

Gardner becomes the latest Jet to join the team this off-season, joining UFA QB Jay Fiedler, RB Derrick Blaylock, DL Lance Legree and Joe Nedney.

Abraham Signs with Bolts

San Diego, CA - The Chargers announced today that they have come to terms with former Jets' defensive end, John Abraham. Abraham agreed in principal to a deal worth $28 million over six seasons.

Abraham, a talented pass rusher, had difficulties in New York over the past two seasons. In 2003 he was arrested for a DWI and was suspended for one game. In 2004 Abraham suffered a knee injury at the end of the season, and many questioned if the injury was as bad as Abraham's camp made it out to believe. The media began to speculate that Abraham did not want to chance a more serious injury in his free agent year.

Abraham has compiled 43 sacks in five seasons with the Jets. He has missed 23 games during his five seasons with various injuries. Abraham was a pro bowl player in 2001, 2002 and was voted on but did not play in 2004. He was selected in the first round of the 2000 draft from South Carolina where he excelled at both defensive end and outside linebacker.

Mike, you left after the 2003 season which is 5 pnfl seasons ago. I lost quite a bit of interest when the ownership declined and we had to deal with open teams and eventually reduce to 18 teams. The league could probably even reduce to 12 now if they wanted. I would say its more on life support than going strong but thats JMO.

which version of this game do you play? I have the 4th edition version and have not played it in a very long time. I was trying to rekindle my interest. Is there any difference between 4th edition and the most recent one (2004, 5.1d?) ?

The game added a lot to the 2004 edition, perhaps the biggest, the ability to play multi-player. There are leagues all over the place now, which give you the ability to test your GM abilities against others. It becomes very competitive to build a successful team. I belong to the NAFL, which can be viewed at NAFLSIM.com. Take a look, I would be happy to answer any other questions if you like. If you want PM me on this board and I can give you my email to have further conversation.

Jets Prepare for Draft

Hempstead, NY (April 9, 2005)-With the 2005 NFL Draft two weeks away the Jets front office has been working hard with their draft board to find the best plan with the 12th pick in the first round of this year's draft. It is expected that the Jets will target a defense with their first pick. With the addition of cornerback Anthony Henry and the play of David Barrett last season, head coach, Corey Strauss feels comfortable with his corner situation. The front seven will be a place they will target, as well as a potential offensive tackle to replace the aging Jason Fabini, and free agent departure, Kareem McKenzie.

Some possible names that could be available at the 12th pick include:

Demarcus Ware
Position: OLB
Class: Sr
School: Troy
Conference: Sun Belt
Ht., Wt.: 6-4, 251
40 Time: 4.65

BIO: Three year starter and All-Conference selection as a senior after 53/19/10. Junior totals included 62/16/6 after a breakout sophomore campaign of 72/20/9.

POSITIVES: Athletic, play making defender with great potential for the next level. Keeps his pads low to the ground, fluid changing direction and pursues from the backside with speed. Quick changing direction or altering his angle of attack and possesses the ability to make plays in any direction. Fast off the edge, can flatten and very tough to stop. Doubled by opponents yet stays on his feet and holds his ground. Looked outstanding at the Combine when used at linebacker and was a force during Senior Bowl week.

NEGATIVES: Lacks the quick first step out of a three point stance. Engulfed by larger opponents. Limited experience playing in space.

ANALYSIS: A productive collegiate defensive end, Ware has the athleticism and abilities to be used at a variety of positions in the NFL. Perfectly suited to stand up over tackle in a 34 defense and could eventually develop into a solid strong side linebacker. Possesses the physical skills as well as mental abilities to see significant action as a rookie. Rising up draft boards off his performances in the postseason. He is believed to be tops on the Jets board right now at pick 12.

Shawne Merriman
Position: DE
Class: Jr
School: Maryland
Conference: ACC
Ht., Wt.: 6-4.5, 272
40 Time: 4.65

BIO: All-Conference selection as a junior after posting 85/17/8.5. Battled injuries much of his sophomore campaign and finished with 55/9.5/8.5.

POSITIVES: Athletic defender who displays great suddenness to his game. Explosive up the field, redirects to ballcarriers and fast moving laterally. Pursues to the flanks with speed, displays outstanding range and the ability to defeat blocks. Breaks down well, tough to knock off his feet and strong at the point of attack. Possesses a closing burst of speed and flashes on the scene. Disciplined in pass coverage, effective in space and fast off the edge when lined up in a three-point stance.

NEGATIVES: Must develop more moves with his hands to get off blocks rather than just relying on brute force. Much better making plays up the field than in reverse.

ANALYSIS: A difference maker and disruptive force, Merriman is an outstanding athlete with top measurables for the next level. Best suited to play over tight end in a 34 defense and has the potential to develop into an impact defender at the next level. Merriman is a viable option at twelve for the Jets if Ware goes.

Derrick Johnson
Position: OLB
Class: Sr
School: Texas
Conference: Big 12
Ht., Wt.: 6-3.5, 242
40 Time: 4.6

BIO: Three-year starter handed the Nagurski Trophy as the nation's top defensive player and the Butkus Award as college football's best linebacker in .04 after numbers of 130/19/2. Junior totals included 125/20/2 when he was an All-Conference and All-America selection.

POSITIVES: Explosive linebacker who forces the action in any area of the field. Fast in every direction, great in pursuit and easily cuts the corners off from running backs. Gets depth on pass drops, displays terrific range, and covers a lot of area on the field. Explosive filling gaps in run defense, easily redirects to the ballcarrier, bringing them down on initial contact. Tough to handle and does not stay on blocks for very long. Disciplined, does not bite on play-action passes, and displays the ability to run downfield with receivers. A playmaker that causes a lot of fumbles.

NEGATIVES: Not efficient, takes a lot of missteps or incorrect angles to the action. Lacks instincts in pass coverage and slow locating the ball.

ANALYSIS: Physically gifted defender who can be a dominant presence, Johnson has outstanding size/speed numbers and plays to them. Has been effective at both outside and middle linebacker in college and a three-down defender for the next level who will be productive out of the gate if put in a simplified scheme. If the Jets do want to go linebacker, there is a chance Ware and Merriman could go to the Cowboys and Chargers who play a 3-4. Johnson would be a good fit with Vilma.

Marcus Spears
Position: DE
Class: Sr
School: LSU
Conference: SEC
Ht., Wt.: 6-4, 307
40 Time: 5.01

BIO: Three-year starter voted an All-America as a senior after winning All-Conference honors the past two seasons. Totaled 49/17/9 last year after 49/13/6 the previous campaign. Has intercepted four passes since his sophomore season.

POSITIVES: Well-sized, athletic defensive lineman who offers a good degree of upside potential. Forceful up the field, plays through blocks and quick changing direction to pursue the action laterally. Plays low with leverage, balance and body control. Easily moves to the sidelines, can drop off the line of scrimmage and make plays in space or in any direction of the field. Displays an explosive inside move, reads the action and quick locating the ball.

NEGATIVES: Must improve his tackling technique. Rather easily held up at the point by ordinary opponents. Doesn't always seem in a hurry to get involved in the action or pursue the play if it.s not in his immediate vicinity.

ANALYSIS: An outstanding athlete who, when on his game, can be a difference maker, Spears offers early first round physical skills yet has late first day motivation. A tough lineman to block, he is a disruptive force rushing the passer, defending the run or even playing in space. Could be a perfect fit at left end in a conventional defense or as a two-gap lineman, but must start to apply himself on a consistent basis to ever reach the potential he possesses. Spears is in the mold of the Jets Shaun Ellis. If the Jets do not get the outside speed rusher that we believe they want, Spears would be a solid fit at twelve.

David Pollack
Position: DE
Class: Sr
School: Georgia
Conference: SEC
Ht., Wt.: 6-2, 265
40 Time: 4.84

BIO: Three-year starter that's been an All-America and All-Conference player every season since his sophomore campaign. Winner of the Lombardi Award given to the nation's Outstanding Lineman, the Bednarik Award as the nation's most outstanding defensive player, the Hendricks Award, handed to the nation's top defensive end. Also recipient of the Lott Trophy for being defensive impact player of the year in .04. Totaled 52/17.5/12.5 as a senior after 92/13.5/7.5 the prior year, with career numbers of 102/23.5/14 coming as a sophomore.

POSITIVES: Relentless, high-revving player effective in a variety of ways. Bends his knees playing with leverage, balance and body control. Ferocious, works very hard to get involved in the action and rarely off his feet. Explosive off the snap with a good first step, relentless in his pursuit of the ballcarrier and displays excellent lateral movement skills. Quickly changes direction, can drop off the line and play in space and intelligent in all aspects of his game. Quick to diagnose the action or locate the ball. Fast off the edge or out to the flanks.

NEGATIVES: Engulfed by larger linemen, handled at the point and has difficulty getting off blocks. Lacks the big frame and wears down, as he is consistently double-teamed by opponents.

ANALYSIS: Consistently a disruptive force throughout his college career, Pollack combines athleticism and intelligence to get the job done. Lacks the great size as well as growth potential, yet an outstanding prospect in a conventional defense that employs the zone blitz and asks him to move around the field. Will not be drafted as high as he should due to a lack of size, yet an early first-round pick who will be productive at the next level. Pollack would be a reach at twelve for the Jets, however, Strauss was impressed with him during the Senior Bowl and could use him at a variety of positions.

Erasmus James
Position: DE
Class: Sr
School: Wisconsin
Conference: Big Ten
Ht., Wt.: 6-4, 266
40 Time: 4.85

BIO: Three-year starter coming off a breakout senior campaign. Big-Ten Defensive Player of the Year after posting 36/11.5/8. Sat out the 2003 campaign with a hip injury after posting 57/8/4 the prior year.

POSITIVES: Excellent athlete making a big move up draft boards. Quick off the snap, plays low with leverage and immediately alters his angle of attack. Fluid moving up and down the line of scrimmage, redirects to the action and displays great range. Rarely off his feet and collapses outside-in to defend the run. Plays with excellent balance, fast off the edge and effective dropped off the line of scrimmage. Good speed to the sidelines and always working to get involved in the action. Solid hand technique fighting blocks.

NEGATIVES: Handled at the point by a single blocker and has difficulty if opponents run straight at him.

ANALYSIS: A disruptive force who opponents game-plan around, James combines athletic skills with intensity to force the action up the field. Answered a lot of questions last year and has gone from a possible first day pick to a potential top-15 selection. The Jets look at James as a cross between Abraham and Julius Peppers, either way it could be tough to plug James into the 3-4 defense the Jets plan to play. He would be a long shot.

Jammal Brown
Position: OT
Class: Sr
School: Oklahoma
Conference: Big 12
Ht., Wt.: 6-6, 316
40 Time: 5.07

BIO: Three-year starter and an All-Conference selection since his sophomore campaign. Named as an All-America the past two seasons. Awarded the Outland Trophy in .04, handed to the nation.s best interior lineman.

POSITIVES: Big, athletic tackle built for the right side. Quick into blocks, displays good hand punch, and easily rides opponents from their angle of attack. Gets out to the second level and walls linebackers from the action. Powerful, easily controls opponents or turns them from the action. Patient in pass protection, anchors at the point and stays low throughout the action. Mentally alert, works well with teammates, gets movement from run blocks when focused.

NEGATIVES: Does not consistently attack run-blocking assignments. Controls opponents, yet does more steering than actual finishing. Heavy-legged and not effective in motion. Could improve his hand placement.

ANALYSIS: An athletic prospect with terrific upside potential, Brown projects well to the next level. Has first-round potential and could be a productive lineman for a long time to come if he develops a mean streak. Some think if the Jets do not get their outside pass rusher, offensive tackle is the way to go, if Brown is there.

Alex Barron
Position: OT
Class: Sr
School: Florida St.
Conference: ACC
Ht., Wt.: 6-7.5, 320
40 Time: 5.21

BIO: Full-time starter the past two seasons and named to both the All-America and All-Conference teams. Played five of 14 games with the first unit as a sophomore in .02.

POSITIVES: Outstanding blind-side protector with excellent size and upside potential. Quickly sets in pass protection, immediately gets his hands into defenders and extends to keep them from the action. Strong in his upper body, displays good hand punch and bends his knees, staying low to the ground throughout the play. Easily controls opponents once engaged in a block, knocking them back off the ball. Effective position blocker who walls opponents from the action. Displays good movement skills, can slide in space and fluid shuffling out to protect the edge. Blocks down or engulfs opponents. Keeps his feet moving and anchors in pass defense. Easily adjusts picking up stunts or blitzes.

NEGATIVES: Tries to outguess defenders and gets beat. Lazy with his hands. Must make better use of blocking angles and learn to play with balance. Does not play with a nasty attitude and by no means a dominant drive blocker who opens big holes for the running game. Work ethic has been questioned.

ANALYSIS: Possessing a tremendous amount of natural skill, Barron has all the physical traits necessary to be an early pick and a productive left tackle in the NFL. Before any of that happens he must pick up the intensity and tempo in all areas or will never reach the level of achievement scouts think he is capable of. Barron could be had a little later in the first round, if the Jets think of trading down and going O-Line, Barron would be a good place to begin with.

With two weeks to go, anything could happen. Fortunately for the Jets they do have options here. The team has made it clear that they will target a front line defender or an offensive tackle with their first pick. With picks in rounds two and three it is just to difficult to tell at this point which way they will go.

Rolle, Edwards audition to be 49ers' No. 1 pick

Rolle, Edwards audition to be 49ers' No. 1 pick

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (April 11, 2005) -- From his playing style to his infectious smile, Braylon Edwards is unafraid to compare himself to Terrell Owens -- and the Michigan star would love to become the NFL's next great receiver while wearing Owens' old uniform.

Edwards visited the San Francisco 49ers ' training complex for interviews and meetings. The 49ers have four players on their list of possible selections with the first overall pick in the draft, and Edwards is convinced he deserves the honor.

"I've wanted to be the No. 1 player this whole year, and I definitely want to be the No. 1 player now," he said. "That would be something special."

Though many scouts believe Edwards is the best player in the draft, the 49ers are thought to be leaning toward selecting a quarterback who can be the cornerstone of their rebuilding effort. But Edwards, who grew up rooting for the 49ers from his native Detroit, did his best to change coach Mike Nolan's mind.

"I've always set my goals high, and I believe that being the No. 1 player taken says a lot about what you've done throughout your career and what you're capable of," Edwards said. "Being the No. 1 player taken (would) mean I've done what I'm supposed to do for at least the last four years, and I have the potential to make things happen."

Miami cornerback Antrel Rolle also visited with the 49ers' brass. Utah quarterback Alex Smith will visit April 12, and California quarterback Aaron Rodgers is scheduled for April 13.

Edwards won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver, catching 97 passes for 1,330 yards and 15 touchdowns, including three TD catches in the Rose Bowl.

And Edwards, an outgoing communications major, isn't shy about his pro prospects. With his athleticism, improved hands and strong pedigree -- his father, Stanley, played six NFL seasons and put Braylon on a strict training regimen -- Edwards believes the 49ers could recover from Owens' departure.

Owens fled San Francisco a year ago after eight standout seasons, and the 49ers desperately need a game-breaking receiver. Tight end Eric Johnson led the 2-14 club in catches last season, while two of the top three wideouts from last season -- Cedrick Wilson and Curtis Conway -- won't be back.

"You have to have that confident attitude ... that you can make a play whenever the team may need it," Edwards said. "That's one thing that I know: I have that ability. Terrell Owens is tremendous ballplayer. Despite the shenanigans people talk about, he's a game-time player. ... The bottom line is, he makes plays whenever his team may need it, and that's what I do."

Edwards attended Detroit's Martin Luther King High School with Niners nose tackle Anthony Adams, and their mothers are friends. Adams interrupted his offseason workout to poke fun at his "little brother."

"You can't help (but) notice that he's a great guy and a hard worker," Adams said. "He was a little scrub in high school, but after a while, he shot up. I used to come home and see him all the time, and he got a lot bigger. It wasn't as easy to slam him like I used to."

Adams had nothing but praise for Edwards, whose father once tried to put the stocky defensive lineman through Braylon's regular workout. Adams had to quit after the warmup.

"He was killing me doing stretches," Adams said. "I can imagine how he was with Braylon."

Edwards also has interviewed with Tennessee, Detroit and Chicago, and he's planning to visit Minnesota on April 13.

No defensive back has been chosen with the first pick in the draft since 1956, and Rolle is unlikely to be the next, since the 49ers have much more pressing needs. But the coaching staff was impressed by Rolle at the draft combine -- and if the three offensive players prove tough to sign, or if an unlikely trade allows the Niners to move down a few spots, Rolle could be a target.

"I feel like there's a handful of people who can be the No. 1 pick," Rolle said. "It would be a great accomplishment, a great honor and I would really enjoy that moment, but I think it's just another slot to me. I just want to play."

Rolle already visited Miami and Carolina, and he has interviews planned with Houston, Detroit and Washington.

Utah QB Smith latest to visit 49ers

Utah QB Smith latest to visit 49ers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (April 12, 2005) -- Alex Smith still seems a bit surprised to be spending the spring getting ready for the NFL draft instead of studying for his master's degree in economics.

So maybe that's why the Utah quarterback is much more pragmatic than the average college football star when discussing his pro prospects. And maybe that maturity, combined with his considerable talent, is just what the San Francisco 49ers need.

Smith visited the 49ers' training complex April 12, standing in front of the franchise's five Super Bowl trophies while explaining why he should be the top pick in next week's draft. The athletic, brainy 6-foot-4 passer has emerged as many draft experts' top recommendation for the Niners.

Though he would welcome the honor, Smith is aware of the pressure he would face as a No. 1 pick asked to start immediately at the NFL's toughest position on one of the league's worst teams -- and while playing in the shadow of Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Steve Young, no less.

"Obviously, this is a young team. This is not something that's going to be turned around right away," Smith said. "We're not going to be winning Super Bowls next year, I don't imagine, although we'd like to.

"(The 49ers) are people who are driven and want to win, and I like that. They're not taking this first pick lightly. They're going to put in the work, and they're going to make the right decision, and that's something that gets me excited. I want to be a part of it, and I anticipate winning a lot of games in the future."

Smith and California's Aaron Rodgers, who will be in Santa Clara on April 13, are the two quarterbacks among the 49ers' four finalists to be the No. 1 pick. Michigan receiver Braylon Edwards and Miami cornerback Antrel Rolle visited the training complex April 11.

Smith was just another above-average junior quarterback before the Utes' undefeated season, capped by a Fiesta Bowl victory for the first non-BCS conference team in a BCS game, catapulted him into the national consciousness. He was nearly flawless as the leader of coach Urban Meyer's creative offense, going 21-1 as a starter over the last two seasons.

He had never seriously thought about leaving school early -- until nearly everything went right during Utah's dream campaign. Smith was the Mountain West Conference's offensive player of the year, and he became the first Heisman Trophy finalist from Utah after passing for 2,952 yards with 32 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

A fitting encore seemed impossible, particularly after Meyer left the Utes for Florida. So one year after earning his bachelor's degree as a sophomore, Smith headed for the NFL.

"If you'd asked me five months ago, even during the middle of the season, I wouldn't have told you this," Smith said. "There wasn't much left for me at the college level. If I had gone 7-4 or something, I would definitely have came back. But the note I ended on and what I accomplished, I achieved much more than I expected to."

Smith has auditioned twice for the 49ers in the last four weeks, including a private workout in Salt Lake City last month. San Francisco coach Mike Nolan traveled to Utah with 49ers receivers Arnaz Battle and Brandon Lloyd so the club could watch while Smith threw to NFL players.

Smith also has visited the Cleveland Browns, who have the third overall pick behind Miami, and Detroit, which picks 10th. He worked out for Tampa Bay, picking fifth, and will visit the Dolphins later this week.

If the 49ers draft a quarterback, Nolan expects him to play this season. Smith is aware of the lumps many rookie quarterbacks have taken for bad teams, but he also doesn't shy away from one more unlikely achievement in a year full of them.

"That would be the goal for myself, to absolutely play early," Smith said. "It's the best way to learn. You can learn only so much on the sidelines. But at the same time, if I'm not playing well, if things aren't meshing right away, the possibility of being able to watch for a few games would be enticing, but I don't anticipate that. I would like to play right away."

Redskins obtain first-round pick in trade

NFL.com wire reports

ASHBURN, Va. (April 19, 2005) -- A day of mixed signals from the Washington Redskins ended with an unexpected twist: a trade that leaves the team with two picks in the first round of the NFL draft.

Paying a hefty price for a short-term gain, the Redskins acquired the No. 25 overall pick from the Denver Broncos. In exchange, Washington gave up its third-round selection (No. 76 overall) in this year's draft and picks in the first and fourth rounds in 2006.

The trade allows the Redskins to take care of both of their most pressing needs -- cornerback and receiver -- in one afternoon. Washington holds the ninth and 25th picks, with the flexibility to trade up or down to get the players the team has targeted.

2005 NFL Draft

Round 1

1. San Francisco - Alex Smith, QB, Utah (6’4”, 217) – The 49ers tried to trade out of the position but had no takers. They chose Smith over quarterback, Aaron Rodgers to command their offense. A natural leader that does an excellent job running the offense, Smith has been very productive the past two years. Stays away from mistakes and has a tremendous touchdown-to-interception ratio. Does not have a deep passing arm just yet but would be initially effective in a timing or West Coast offense as he grows into a pro passing game.

2. Miami – Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn (6’0”, 233) - A competitive back with outstanding physical skills, Brown proved himself to be a 'do-it-all' ball handler in '04. Not just a powerful ballcarrier who runs over opponents, Brown displays outstanding running-back intangibles and field vision. Improved every facet of his game last season, especially his blocking and pass catching and as a result will be an early first-round pick.

3. Cleveland – Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan (6’3”, 211) – The Browns had the opportunity to land a franchise quarterback in Aaron Rodgers here, but elected to go with perhaps the best player in the draft. A superior athlete who plays bigger and faster than his computer numbers, Edwards makes truly amazing plays on the football field with regularity. A terrific red-zone target who creates mismatches, he has an unusually high ratio of touchdown receptions. Worthy of an early first round selection and should have a long and productive NFL career once he learns to focus and give attention to detail.

4. Chicago – Cedric Benson, RB, Texas (5’11”, 222) - An outstanding athlete who gave up a career in baseball, Benson has all the physical skills to be a premier NFL back. Has the abilities to be a three-down player effective in passing situations. Must pick up the tempo of his blocking and does not always show a fire in his belly, yet when hitting on all cylinders a franchise running back.

5. Tampa Bay – Carnell Williams, RB Auburn (5’11”, 217) - A ball handler who possesses great explosion and quickness, Williams offers excellent upside for the next level and is a back who can be used in a variety of ways. Comes off a Senior Bowl where he was effectively used in a West Coast system and proved he could handle the pass-catching duties out of the backfield. Combines top athletic skills as well as football instincts, and though he may never be a heavy duty running back, should be very productive touching the ball 20 times a game at the next level.

6. Tennessee – Adam Jones, CB, West Virginia (5’10”, 187) - An outstanding athlete with a great feel for the game, Jones has the abilities to play in press or zone coverage and eventually back off the line of scrimmage. The ability to immediately change momentum of games with return skills is added value as Jones is a justifiable top-12 pick in April's draft.

7. Minnesota (via Oakland) – Troy Williamson, WR, South Carolina (6’2”, 203) - Displaying the speed to stretch defenses, Williamson offers a lot of natural skills for the next level. Sized well, he has the abilities to develop into a team's No. 1 receiver and game-breaker, but must get stronger and learn to do the little things well.

8. WashingtonAntrell Rolle, CB, Miami (6’0”, 201) - A physically gifted defender, Rolle possesses early first round abilities. Predominantly a press cover cornerback, the inability to play backed off the line of scrimmage or in a zone situation could cause him to slip further in the draft than his skills would warrant. Regardless, if used in the proper system at the next level, he should be a productive defensive back right out of the gate.

9. Detroit – Mike Williams, WR, Southern California (6’5”, 230) - Tremendously productive his only two years on the field, Williams is a physical specimen who could be used at a variety of pass-catching positions. A prototypical possession receiver, Williams projects nicely as a top third-down target or red-zone threat. The Lions now face the challenge of three, number one receivers.

10. Dallas – Demarcus Ware, OLB, Troy (6’4”, 251) - A productive collegiate defensive end, Ware has the athleticism and abilities to be used at a variety of positions in the NFL. Perfectly suited to stand up over tackle in a 34 defense and could eventually develop into a solid strong side linebacker. Possesses the physical skills as well as mental abilities to see significant action as a rookie. His stock went up on draft boards off his performances in the postseason.

11. San Diego (via New York Giants) – Shawne Merriman, OLB, Maryland (6’4”, 272) - A difference maker and disruptive force, Merriman is an outstanding athlete with top measurables for the next level. Best suited to play over tight end in a 34 defense and has the potential to develop into an impact defender at the next level.

12. New York JetsMarcus Spears, DE, Louisiana State (6’4”, 307) - An outstanding athlete who, when on his game, can be a difference maker, Spears offers early first round physical skills yet has late first day motivation. A tough lineman to block, he is a disruptive force rushing the passer, defending the run or even playing in space. Could be a perfect fit at left end in a conventional defense or as a two-gap lineman, but must start to apply himself on a consistent basis to ever reach the potential he possesses.

13. ArizonaCarlos Rodgers, CB, Auburn, (6’0”, 196) - Finally meeting expectations and getting his game back to the place it was after his freshman campaign, Rogers made a major leap up draft boards last season and is now positioned in the middle of the first round. Best suited for a system where he is backed off the line of scrimmage and facing the quarterback, he also possesses the abilities to develop into a fine press-corner. Offers a large degree of upside but must continue to build upon the momentum that started last season.

14. New Orleans (via Houston) – Jamaal Brown, OT, Oklahoma (6’6”, 316) - An athletic prospect with terrific upside potential, Brown projects well to the next level. Has first-round potential and could be a productive lineman for a long time to come if he develops a mean streak.

15. Carolina – Thomas Davis, S, Georgia (6’1”, 230) - A terrific player with a great motor, Davis has tremendous size for the safety position and can be a devastating run defender. Offers a great upside in a variety of schemes and much more than a one-dimensional prospect.

16. Kansas City - Derrick Johnson, OLB, Texas (6’4”, 242) - Physically gifted defender who can be a dominant presence, Johnson has outstanding size/speed numbers and plays to them. Has been effective at both outside and middle linebacker in college and a three-down defender for the next level who will be productive out of the gate if put in a simplified scheme.

17. Houston (via New Orleans) – Travis Johnson, DT, Florida State (6’4”, 305) - Rebounding off a poor junior campaign, Johnson got his game back on track last season and progressed off of what was a terrific sophomore year. The court case of .03 seemed to drag on him as a junior and was not as highly ranked as he should have been coming into the season. Stands to add bulk and strength to his frame yet a solid tackle for a conventional defense and a legitimate first round choice.

18. Cincinnati – David Pollack, DE, Georgia (6’2”, 265) - Consistently a disruptive force throughout his college career, Pollack combines athleticism and intelligence to get the job done. Lacks the great size as well as growth potential, yet an outstanding prospect in a conventional defense that employs the zone blitz and asks him to move around the field. Will not be drafted as high as he should due to a lack of size, yet an early first-round pick who will be productive at the next level.

19. Minnesota – Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin (6’4”, 266) - A disruptive force who opponents game-plan around, James combines athletic skills with intensity to force the action up the field. Answered a lot of questions last year and has gone from a possible first day pick to a potential top-15 selection.

20. St. Louis – Alex Barron, OT, Florida State (6’8”, 320) - Possessing a tremendous amount of natural skill, Barron has all the physical traits necessary to be an early pick and a productive left tackle in the NFL. Before any of that happens he must pick up the intensity and tempo in all areas or will never reach the level of achievement scouts think he is capable of.

21. Jacksonville – Matt Jones, WR, Arkansas (6’6”, 242) - An outstanding athlete who works hard in a variety of ways to make positive plays, the ability of Jones to play several different positions is enticing. Did an outstanding job transitioning to receiver at the Senior Bowl and even looked efficient long snapping and fielding kickoffs. His underdeveloped frame at over 240 pounds, combined with a lack of quickness and outright speed, may all add up to Jones eventually finding a home at tight end. Could start off as a slot receiver used in third-down or goal-line situations and a prospect with a large degree of upside for the next level.

22. Baltimore – Mark Clayton, WR, Oklahoma (5’11”, 193) - Capping off a terrific college career with a good showing in the Senior Bowl, Clayton lacks the pure size to be a No. 1 wideout yet is a savvy ball handler that can be a very productive second receiver for a team.

23. Dallas (via Baltimore)- Shaun Cody, DT, Southern California (6’4”, 293) - A super athletic prospect that can be used in a variety of defensive systems as well as a number of spots on the line, Cody possesses good upside for the next level. Offers growth potential which will only make him better as he physically matures. Should be a solid yet unspectacular player in the NFL.

24. Seattle – Chris Spencer, C, Ole Miss (6’3”, 309) - A terrific prospect who offers a good degree of upside, Spencer has continually progressed on the college level and made the most of his opportunity last season. Effectively snapped to three different quarterbacks in 2004, and while he needs to iron out the details of his game, a prospect who could eventually start in the NFL.

25. Green Bay – Aaron Rodgers, QB, California (6’2”, 223) - A physically gifted passer with a great understanding of the position, Rodgers has made himself one of the nation's top quarterback prospects the past two seasons. May not fit every system, but should quickly flourish in the NFL for a timing offense that does not throw the ball down the field with regularity. Offers a good amount of upside and is a coachable player who should continually improve his game.

26. Washington (via Denver) – Jason Campbell, QB, Auburn (6’5”, 230) - A prospect with the physical tools to work with, Campbell improved his overall game and made a big jump up draft boards the past six months. Most effective in a short passing offense that does not rely on the vertical game. Will need to sit on the sidelines for a few seasons and develop his game, but proved himself a capable leader off the 2004 season.

27. Atlanta – Roddy White, WR, UAB (6’2”, 207) - Consistently progressing on the college level, White possesses outstanding potential for the NFL and has all the tools to be a second receiver. Must learn to do the little things well and improve the physical nature of his game.

28. San Diego – Luis Castillo, DT, Northwestern (6’4”, 303) - An active lineman who makes a lot of plays against the run, Castillo comes off a terrific combine and is moving up draft boards. Explosive, with the ability to dominate opponents, he consistently stands out on film as he is almost always around the action. Could play in a variety of schemes at the next level and offers a good upside.

29. Indianapolis – Fabian Washington, CB, Nebraska (5’11”, 188) - A fast corner who flashes on the scene, Washington's skills and playing style are best suited for a zone system or in man-off coverage. Needs to physically mature and add strength, yet could eventually develop into a starting cornerback or productive nickel player at the next level.

30. Pittsburgh – Heath Miller, TE, Virginia (6’5”, 256) - Productive and reliable in all aspects of the game, Miller is not as flashy nor as explosive compared to many of the recent junior tight ends who have entered the draft, though he may be a more complete player at the position. Offers good upside at the next level, and will be quietly productive in several areas throughout his NFL career.

31. Philadelphia – Mike Patterson, DT, Southern California (6’0”, 292) - A forceful defender who controls the line of scrimmage and disrupts the offense, Patterson offers an array of skills that project well to the next level. Comes off a terrific Senior Bowl in which he was unblockable most of the week. A prospect who will quickly earn playing time as a rookie in the NFL and go on to have a long and productive career.

32. New England – Logan Mankins, OG, Fresno State (6’4”, 307) - A hard-working lineman who plays with great intelligence, Mankins has been very productive on the college level. Performed well at the Senior Bowl at guard and significantly improved his draft stock.

Jets Draft - Day 1

Jets Play it Defensively

April 23, 2005

Hempstead, NY - The Jets completed the first day of the draft under their new regime of Marra and Strauss, and are optimistic that they addressed some of their needs. In the first round it was believed that the team was going to select Shawne Merriman, and use him as an outside linebacker with Thomas moving back to the defensive end position, and perhaps address the defensive end spot later in the draft (Matt Roth or Dan Cody who were available in the second round).

Merriman went to the Chargers with the eleventh pick (as expected, according to Marra), and the Jets still had many options. Many felt they could go defensive end with Marcus Spears of LSU, Erasumus James of Wisconsin or outside linebacker with Derrick Johnson. The Jets went with the big defensive end, Marcus Spears. Spears brings the big body the Jets covet to play defensive end alongside Dwayne Robertson.

In the second round the Jets were faced with options once again. They had hoped to land one of the top three safeties, Thomas Davis of Georgia(Carolina 1(15)), Brodney Poole of Nebraska (Cleveland 2(2)), or Josh Bullocks of Oklahoma (New Orleans 2(8)), or an offensive tackle like Khalif Barnes of Washington University (Detroit 2(5)). The players they liked after the safeties and Barnes here were cornerback Justin Miller (Clemson), linebacker Odell Thurman (Georgia) and offensive guard Marcus Johnson (Mississippi). Many expected Miller to go late in the first round, so the Jets thought he was just too good to pass up and took Miller. Miller is a playmaker with tremendous return skills that could generate offense for the Jets as well as play the nickel or dime position.

In the third round the team did not see a viable option at safety here so they with OLB Daryl Blackstock from Virginia. Blackstock brings good size for a linebacker (6'3", 241) who can rush the quarterback. Blackstock will see action primarily in pass rush situations early on.

Some areas that still need to be addressed are safety, and offensive line. Players still out there to listen for are safeties Sean Considine (Iowa), James Sanders (Fresno State) and Donte Nicholson (Oklahoma), guard Elton Brown (Virginia), and offensive tackle Wesley Britt (Alabama).

Jets Wrap Up Draft

Jets Draft Day 2

The Jets struck a deal with Jacksonville in the 4th round. The Jets sent their 13th pick in the 4th round to Jacksonville. The Jaguars used that pick on the controversial receiver from Florida State, Crophanso Thorpe. In return the Jaguars sent their 21st pick in the 4th round and 21st pick in the 6th round to New York. The Jets had earlier sent their 6th pick to Denver for compensation in signing Jeb Putzier.

In the 4th round the Jets drafted safety Donte Nicholson from Oklahoma. In the 5th round the Jets took a gamble on defensive tackle Anttaj Hawthorne from Wisconsin. Hawthorne was a preseaon All-American in 2004, however, his numbers delcined in 2004, his combine numbers were not good, and he tested positive for Marijanua. In the 6th round the Jets took running back Cedric Houston from Tennessee, followed by Jonathan Dunn in the 7th round.

New Additions

April 25, 2005

Hempstead, NY - A look at the Jets new rookies who were taken this past week in the NFL Draft.

Marcus Spears
Position: DE
Class: Sr
School: LSU
Conference: SEC
Ht., Wt.: 6-4, 307
40 Time: 5.01
Round: 1
Pick: 12

Justin Miller
Position: CB
Class: Jr
School: Clemson
Conference: ACC
Ht., Wt.: 5-9.5, 201
40 Time: 4.49
Round: 2
Pick: 12

BIO: Three-year starter who made a major impact the moment he came to Clemson. Junior defensive totals included 49/3/7 with a 33 yard average on 20 kick returns and two scores. Also had a 13-yard average on 26 punt returns with an additional touchdown. Sophomore totals included 47/2/13 after a freshman campaign of 61/8/9. Also averaged 35.1 yards on 13 kick returns as a freshman. Pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge in July of 2002.

POSITIVES: Strong, physical shut-down cornerback with the ability to impact games in a variety of ways. Jams opponents at the line, physical throughout the route and a tough defender who consistently takes on bigger opponents. Explodes up the field defending screens, throws his body around the field and works to make a tackle. Quick flipping his hips to transition with opponents, displays good footwork in all directions of the field and the ability to immediately close on the ball. Has a quick plant and break, and fights to get a hand in on the pass. Good job immediately locating the ball in the air.

NEGATIVES: Loses focus, gets lazy and at times he's hesitant reacting to receivers moves off the line.

ANALYSIS: A cornerback rarely tested in college, quarterbacks purposely stayed away from Miller because of his skill. Besides possessing outstanding size/speed numbers as well as ball skills, his ability to immediately alter momentum of games as a return specialist is added value. Still rough around the edges, Miller offers abundant upside for the next level and will be a very productive NFL player should he focus on the task at hand.

Darryl Blackstock
Position: OLB
Class: Jr
School: Virginia
Conference: ACC
Ht., Wt.: 6-2.5, 247
40 Time: 4.73
Round: 3
Pick: 11

BIO: Three-year starter awarded varying degrees of All-Conference honors since his freshman campaign. Posted 45/13/10.5 as a junior after 85/16/6 the prior year. Made an instant impact as a freshman with 107/14/10.

POSITIVES: Physically gifted defender who forces the action and makes an impact on the field. Breaks down well, easily plays off blocks and gets to the action. Tough to knock off his feet, effectively uses hand technique to protect himself and redirects well to the play. Quickly changes direction and displays the ability to immediately alter his angle of attack. Pursues well laterally, forceful up the field and at the same time covers a lot of area displaying good sideline-to-sideline range. Disciplined, reads the action and stays with assignments.

NEGATIVES: Mainly used up the field or in the box at Virginia. Stiff backpedaling in reverse and possesses marginal skills in coverage.

ANALYSIS: A defensive player who must be accounted for on the field, Blackstock has been likened to former All-Pro Lawrence Taylor by Virginia head coach Al Groh. Has similar abilities to disrupt the action, yet must complete the deal and improve his play in coverage. Possesses a lot of upside and can be used in several defensive systems.

Donte Nicholson
Position: S
Class: Sr
School: Oklahoma
Conference: Big 12
Ht., Wt.: 6-1.5, 212
40 Time: 4.55
Round: 4
Pick: 21

BIO: Junior college transfer who made an immediate impact upon arriving in 2003, posting 90/10/6. Totals included 72/3/2 last season as a senior.

POSITIVES: Stout, run-defending safety who can be an intimidating presence. Forceful up the field, takes good angles to the action and displays a closing burst of speed. Holds his ground against blocks, redirects to ballcarriers and wraps up tackling. Explosive hitter who packs a wallop at the point of attack. Adequately reads the quarterback or anticipates the play.

NEGATIVES: Late reactor in pass coverage and does not display top ball skills. Missed a lot of tackles as a senior and seemingly played back on his heels.

ANALYSIS: After a terrific junior campaign in which many predicted he was a top safety prospect, Nicholson took a major step back last season. Indecision and poor technique plagued him; as a result, he will slide out of the draft's first day. Best as a conventional strong safety or in a two-deep zone.

Anttaj Hawthorne
Position: DT
Class: Sr
School: Wisconsin
Conference: Big Ten
Ht., Wt.: 6-3.5, 321
40 Time: 5.29
Round: 5
Pick: 13

BIO: All-Conference selection who started the past three seasons. Coming off a disappointing senior campaign in which he totaled 42/12/6. Posted career numbers of 75/20/4 as a junior.

POSITIVES: Explosive interior defender who attracts double teams in the middle of the field. Gets off the ball with a quick first step, keeps his pads low and effectively uses hand technique to get around blocks. Jolts blockers displaying power and pushes them off the ball. Drives up the field and quickly locates the action. Immediately changes direction and wraps up tackling.

NEGATIVES: Lacks top pursuit skills from the backside. Over-pursues the action in his attempt to get up the field. Improved his hand technique as a senior, yet still stands to protect himself better.

ANALYSIS: A nasty defender who creates a lot of havoc up the field when on his game, Hawthorne can be a dominant force that overpowers one-on-one blockers. Offers size and plays with leverage, which gives him possibilities in a variety of systems. Lack of speed and inability to pursue is a negative, but a late first-round pick who can produce in a conventional defensive scheme.

Cedric Houston
Position: HB
Class: Sr
School: Tennessee
Conference: SEC
Ht., Wt.: 5-11, 225
40 Time: 4.55
Round: 6
Pick: 21

BIO: All-Conference selection who.s been the Volunteer.s primary ballcarrier since his sophomore campaign. Posted career numbers of 181/1,005/8 on the ground as a senior, adding 16/180/1 as a pass catcher.

POSITIVES: Athletic ballcarrier with excellent size/speed numbers. Quick footed, cuts back in a small area and makes defenders miss. Runs with authority through the holes, displays a burst, and possesses the speed to get outside of tackle. Squirts through the small openings in the defense, strong in his lower body and keeps his feet off the initial hit or falls forward when tackled. Aggressively puts his shoulders into opponents. Fluid in all aspects. Adequate pass catcher out of the backfield.

NEGATIVES: Not an overly instinctive ballcarrier and not decisive taking handoffs. Not overly elusive carrying the ball. Must be more concerned with ball security.

ANALYSIS: A well-built running back with a large upside, at times Houston looks better then he actually plays. To this point, better athlete than football player, yet his physical skills will get him considered in the middle rounds.

Jonnathan Dunn
Position: OT
Class: Sr
School: Virginia Tech
Conference: ACC
Ht., Wt.: 6-7.5, 328
40 Time: 5.44
Round: 7
Pick: 12

BIO: Three-year starter named second-team All-Conference choice as a senior. Consistently graded out over 80% throughout his college career.

POSITIVES: Big, bruising lineman with excellent size. Blocks with leverage, stays square and strong at the point. Effectively uses both body positioning and angles. Controls opponents once engaged in a block. Keeps his feet moving throughout the action, displays tremendous hand punch and knocks opponents to the ground.

NEGATIVES: Lacks footwork in space, adjustment and does not play with top balance. Bends at the waist which reduces his agility and struggles on the second level. Not very alert.

ANALYSIS: Athletic for a big man, Dunn, offers excellent size potential for the next level but must improve the finer details of his position. At the very least a solid developmental prospect.

Jets Add Post Draft Rookies

Hempstead, NY (April 26, 2005) The day after the draft is usually the day when teams make a push to sign undrafted rookies who were rated well on a team's board. The Jets landed there share of undrafted free agents.

Guard Junius Coston, North Carolina A&T (6'3", 310) - Coston is another powerful run blocker who started for three seasons. A good run blocker who will have to impress the coaches to move his way up from 6th on the depth chart out of the 6 guards in camp.

Guard Dana Norton, Texas A&M (6'6", 320) - The Jets signed a pair of Aggies to try and make the Jets. Norton did not have the opportunity to start until his senior season. He has good quickness for a big man, but would be a project if he made the team.

Center Geoff Hangartner, Texas A&M (6'5", 301) - Hangartner was a two year starter for the Aggies. He is a powerful run blocker who handled long snapping duties. If he handles the long snapping duties for the Jets he will earn himself a roster spot.

Inside Linebacker Reuben Lake, Washington State (6'5", 265) - Played outside linebacker until his senior season when he went to defensive end at Washington State, but with his size the Jets project him as an inside linebacker. Played the run well in school, but was often lost in pass coverage assignments, which forced the move to defensive end his senior season.

Jets Fill Need at Safety

Hempstead, NY (April 28, 2005) - With the position of safety not fully addressed in the draft and free agency the Jets made a move last evening that will add to the secondary. The Jets sent Pittsburgh a 5th round pick in 2006 for free safety Chris Hope. Hope spent the previous three seasons with the Steelers after being selected in the third round of the 2002 draft.

Hope signed a new deal with the Jets for 3 years, $2.1 million. The Jets will keep an open mind for the strong safety position, and all indications are the team will allow Rashaad Washington and rookie Donte Nicholson to battle for the position during camp. There are some free agents still out there, but the Jets will wait to see how some teams roster moves may benefit them down the road.
