We've had broadband providers in the Philippines around 1999 or so.

Internet is so expensive here, so having broadband at home is pretty expensive.

In the Philippines, dial-up internet is *shock* metered by minutes consumed (pretty expensive). I used to have an unlimited dial-up account for the equivalent of $10.00 per month. Unlimited broadband (512 kbps) is way too expensive per month... about an equivalent of $36.00 per month.

Of course, that's until I got on board a promo, unlimited broadband (512 kbs) but I'm locked in for one year (no problem), I only pay about $15.00 per month. Not bad, considering me and my bro are splitting the fee between ourselves. (My younger brother just got his first job a couple of months ago).

Who do you use ? I moved to Manila and lived there from 1997 - 2000, and I'm fairly certain someone was offering a combined, cable internet package... wish I could recall the name. Whereabouts do you live ?

I was referring to DSL, when I said broadband. Cable internet's been here since 96 or 95, i think.

My provider's PLDT, I use DSL. I live in Parañaque, where in Metro Manila did you live?

Makati - back when the International School was over there. Lived in Bel Air 2 and 3 I believe - but basically, the Makati area. I have strong recollections of Gloreitta Mall, and the lines of people at Singapore Sling on a Friday night (damn high school freshmen getting drunk... ). My greatest regret is that I never ventured out of Manila much - a couple of weeklong trips to the provinces with Habitat for Humanity, but not much else.

Regarding the cable, I loved it, because I could watch the cricket matches in Manila with the providers.

Parañaque's about 30 min. away from Makati... just take the South Super Highway, then EDSA.

My godfather lived in Bel Air 2. makati's the place to be. have you ever gone to baguio? or boracay, the beach in boracay's to die for.

Glorietta's expanded heavily, putting up new wings, etc... along with Greenbelt (up to Glorietta 4 and Greenbelt 4 now). Don't know if Singapore Sling's still there but the entire Glorietta/Greenbelt area's got most of the worthwhile clubs and bars.

That, and Eastwood in Libis, in the other side of the Metro... Quezon City.

And do I even have to explain how hot the women are? I. LOVE. THIS. COUNTRY. Heh.

OK, maybe there is a difference in packages offered by location to explain this, but in Tallahassee, I'm paying $42.95 for Comcast internet (since I have basic cable with them, otherwise it would be $57.95, a topic about which I bitched in a thread last year), and the download speed for this basic internet access is 6 megs. The upgrade for $10 is to 8 meg speed. I never thought I'd say this about internet speed, but 6 megs is plenty fast for me, and I do a ton of downloading.

Anyway, when I first got Comcast internet several years ago, 4 megs was the limit and the $10 package they introduced was to upgrade to 6 megs. But they automatically increased me to 6 megs well over a year ago, at no additional cost - I got an email telling me to disconnect the modem, restart the computer, and the increased speed would begin, which it did.

So I guess what I'm saying is that you ought to look at your bill and see what packages are available in your area, because if you're paying $10 extra just to get up to 4.5 megs (which is probably a max of 6 megs), you may be getting ripped off. I haven't actually seen a 6 meg speed, but last night I was downloading a bootleg concert DVD from the newsgroups and hit just over 5 megs. Usually, though, I hit between 3.5 and 4.5, which is just fine for me.
