Where are the black American NHL Players?

Today on Outside the Lines

Questions remain about their prospects in the NHL. According to Redick some of that uncertainty is racially motivated. "There's a stigma that black players can't skate, and whether that's true or not, it exists."

In fact, on opening day there were only 17 black American players in the NHL, just 3 percent of the league. Anson Carter, a black American, says, "You've got to have a lot of self-confidence. Because you're going to get beaten down. You're going to be told that you can't do a lot of things. And when you're surrounded by people that think they can beat you all the time -- you've got to have a strong backbone."

Outside the Lines' Mark Schwarz reports on Mike Grier's climb to the top of college hockey, followed by a discussion on the scarcity of black Americans in the NHL. Also on the show, an update of the NFL labor negotiations. Bob Ley hosts.

Guests include:

Barry Malone, NHL fashion adviser

Years ago, I had a fairly intense argument with a guy who thought Grant Fuhr was white. This was before the internet, so it wasn't easy to prove him wrong.

Actually, isn't he mostly of Middle Eastern descent? I remember hearing about how he is mostly Moroccan, or something like that, a while back.

Boy this one is tough...

Do they mention how much it costs to play youth hockey? Do they compare that to the cost of youth "insert almost any other sport here"?

How about the number of youth hockey leagues setup in cities, is that covered?

Morocco is in Africa, not the Middle East. As far as Anson Carter goes, I always thought he was Canadian.

So besides Carter and Grier, who are the other black Americans in the NHL?

This is actually turning into a serious discussion. My opinion is that equipment costs + need for ice rinks = no black players. Although I think that will change as the black middle class continues to grow.

Not to inject too much into this otherwise lovely discussion... but the line between the two is just too blurry to simply declare someone else wrong in their interpretation. Plenty of sensible people would describe Morocco as a "Middle Eastern" nation, rather than an "African" one, especially since the definition of "African" is most often a more cultural one than purely geographic. (Many geographers prefer a more descriptive term like "Sub-Saharan African" to better describe the area that many set aside as culturally distinct from the so-called Middle East.

Igilna is in Calgary.
Grier is in Buffalo (I think).
Laraque is in Edmonton.
Worrell is out of the NHL.
Brashear is with the Flyers.
Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre was with Columbus for a while, but he's out of the NHL too (I think).
Anson Carter is in Vancouver.

I got to side with QuikSand here. Morocco is the most northwestern part of Africa, still, the majority of the population there is what one would call 'Arab'. And since 'Arabs' have a link with the Middle East, it's not so far fetched at all. This actually holds true for the entire North coast of Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt), people in all countries North of the Sahara desert have mostly 'Arab' looks, South of the desert people are usually 'black'.

I think I found at least part of this (assuming the info is right that is)
http://www.stat.ncsu.edu/blogs/sports/?p=3

Countries ranked by total number of NHL players:

Canada 389
US 134
Czech Rep 50
Sweden 42
Finland 32
Russia 31
Slovakia 23
Germany 7
Ukraine 7

Countries ranked by highest proportion of NHL players per population size (using 2004 Census Bureau Data):

Canada 1 NHL player for every 83,568 citizens
(Or 3.9 players per population the size of Raleigh)
Finland 1 for every 162,969
(Or 2 players per Raleigh)
Czech Rep 1 for every 204,920
(Or 1.6 players per Raleigh)
Sweden 1 for every 213,952
(Or 1.5 players per Raleigh)
Slovakia 1 for every 235,826
(Or 1.4 players per Raleigh)
US 1 for every 2,186,776
(Or 0.15 players per Raleigh)
Russian 1 for every 4,643,452
(Or 0.07 players per Raleigh)
Ukraine 1 for every 6,758,571
(Or 0.05 players per Raleigh)
Germany 1 for every 11,775,000
(Or 0.03 players per Raleigh)

Nevermind the lack of the black athlete in hockey. There never was a presence. What happened to baseball?? Peter Gammons had a interesting paragraph in his Diamond Notes:

Quote:
One GM offers these shocking statistics: There are only 76 African-Americans spread out across the 30 40-man rosters. Seven teams have one or fewer, three have none.

Obviously, the Baseball Academy in Compton, Calif., is a beginning. But baseball somehow has to get spread back into the African-American culture, especially those in the impoverished areas of the country, from the inner cities to Tobacco Road. One major problem is that it's practically impossible to be poor -- whatever culture -- and play college baseball. Because baseball programs are limited to fewer than 11 scholarships per program -- for 30-man rosters -- money must be carefully allotted. So there has to be a way for baseball to make scholarship money available to poor kids who want to play juco or college baseball and are academically qualified.

But when 76 of the nearly 1,200 players on spring training rosters are African-American, the problem is worsening.

It does seem to drive home the point when people can't tell that aparody thread is a parody thread.

You know what? Now that I've studied the the definition of parody, I'm all on board with parody threads. They all seem to fill the second definition very nicely.
