Titans kick McNair out of camp because he makes too much money..
And they're looking to possibly cut him, but they don't want him getting injured and them be liable. What asshats.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Titans told quarterback Steve McNair they don’t want him working out in their building, a move that signals his 11-year tenure with the team may be nearing an end. McNair was told to go home Monday when he showed up at the team’s headquarters for the start of the third week in the Titans’ offseason conditioning program. The team’s general counsel had called the quarterback’s agent, Bus Cook, earlier Monday and informed him McNair would be told to leave. McNair, the NFL’s 2003 co-MVP, is due $9 million in salary in 2006. But his salary cap number is $23.46 million, and the Titans may not want to risk the liability if McNair is hurt on their property. The Titans did not immediately comment Tuesday. General manager Floyd Reese and coach Jeff Fisher were in Los Angeles following a private workout of Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart. Cook did not immediately return telephone messages left by The Associated Press on Tuesday. But he said Monday night that he’s not sure McNair would want to go back now that he’s been thrown out. “A month ago they say he needs to be there to get familiar with the young guys, and now they tell him to get out? I have never seen anything like that in my life,” Cook told The Tennessean newspaper. “They can sugarcoat it any way they want to, but when you throw your starting quarterback off the property, an MVP, Pro Bowl guy who led them to the Super Bowl and one of the greatest players in the history of the team ...” The Titans hold the No. 3 pick overall in the draft, the same spot at which they took McNair in 1995. They have been studying top quarterback prospects Leinart, Vince Young of Texas and Jay Cutler of Vanderbilt in recent weeks.

They should have just already cut him. I totally see their point about not wanting him to show up. No reason to lock him in at 9 million. The asshat thing is not resolving it for his sake, when he could still get potentially decent money on the open market.

I am both aMcNair fan and a longtime Titans fan and I got to say he screwed himself. Last week, he said he didn't want mentor anyone to replace him in few years and still wanted to start for 3-4 years more. He later retracted his cmments partially but apparently the damage was done.

Maybe they should trade him for Favre?

This is a no-brainer
From CnnSI Now McNair is due $9 million in salary in the final year left on his contract. The Titans declined last month to pick up a $50 million option to stretch the deal through 2009, leaving McNair with a salary cap figure that takes up nearly a quarter of their cap space |

He is a 10 million dollar cap hit so they need to cut him. But, they might be trying to hold him until the draft to trade him and the titans 2nd rounder to the Ravens for their 1st round pick and a late pick.

That would explain why the team made a sudden change on his status. |

That would be getting a lot for him, but it would be good for the Ravens. Have they ever had a decent Quarterback? |

He is rather long in the tooth, and has played through a lot of injuries that are going to eventually catch up to him. If Culpepper was only worth a second, I can't see McNair being worth more (especially since he is going to be cut anyway). |

They won't be able to trade him if he's not willing to take a pay cut and be a backup. I don't think anyone would take him as a starter right now.

why don't they give Volek a shot? Seems like everytime he plays, he plays well. Give him a season and see what he can do with it.

I think that will be the plan. Volek since Mcnair doesn't want to will mentor probably Leinart maybe Cutler. This doesn't help Young's chances of being drafted by the Titans. Vince was close with McNair since he had gone to the Camp McNair runs. |

McNair isn't worth a day 1 draft pick. Not at the salary he will want, anyways.

If he is released, I think the Ravens sign him in less than 2 days.

Well, when the shoe is on the other foot... I assume McNair won't last beyond the draft. And I'm not sure the Titans will get a good offer for him.

However, as we know from FOF if nowhere esle, it's contract status that really matters here. Culpepper was just about to receive a sizable ($6m?) roster bonus to be paid by any team who traded for him... so you deal fo rhim, and then you have to lock up a bunch of guaranteed money in him to boot. That surely would depress his value on the open market. I'm guessing that McNair's contract is mostly bonus after the latest re-extension - meaning the team dealing for him gets him with just the base salaries, and perhaps gets a veteran guy under-market. I'm not saying he's going to command a king's ransom, and I don't know any detasil of McNair's contract -- but knowing those details is needed to make a fair assessment of the players' worth on the open market, not just their perceived remaining production. Miami didn't trade a 2nd for Culpepper... they traded a 2nd for Culpepper and his contract. |

According to earlier reports, he only has one year left on his deal. Would you trade more than a third for a guy that you are only guaranteed to have for one year? Anyone trading for him and giving more than that (if they have sense) are going to want a new contract. He will not end up being cheap if he thinks he should be the starter for the next 3-4 years. |

You're right - I mis-read the item above about the multi-year extension. So, the trade essentially is for the exclusive rights to work out a new deal for him -- which may involve a bonus, but not necessarily a big one. Nobody is going to keel the current contract's base salary in place. |
