For our first stop we travel to Atlanta, Georgia where the top four Braves clubs will take the field to determine which team will represent the club in the inaugural GSNP. It's ironic that two of the clubs in the tourney represent the Braves when they were situated in Boston and Milwaukee. Here are the teams, with information about statistical leaders.

1995 90-54 (.625) World Series Champ
Team Leaders:
AVG Javy Lopez .315; HR Fred McGriff 27; RBI Fred McGriff 93

National Football League Preseason

{Note: For pro football, I have set 1950 as a cutoff date since strategy and roster sizes were radically different from the modern game before that time. The 1950s saw the implementation of two platoons, one each for offense and defense; the introduction of modern (read passing) pro offenses and defenses; and specialization in clubs' approaches to player personnel and coaching}

From Atlanta, we travel to the desert surrounding Phoenix, Arizona where 5 Cardinals teams will compete for the honor of representing the franchise in the GSNP. The Cardinals are one of the oldest franchises in NFL history. However, the team hasn't given long-suffering fans much to cheer about over the years. Interestingly, all but one of the teams competing to represent the city of Phoenix are from the era when the Cards were based in St. Louis.

For the preseason games, a number of different programs, some that I haven't used for years...I've got tons of team disks for each, so whereever I can find the teams I need, that's the game I'll use.

'99 Braves' Locker Room

Bobby Cox rubbed his chin as he considered what his alter-ego's most likely lineup and rotation would be. He was quickly finding out just how much strangeness was involved when managing against oneself. It would be a tough series, but he was feeling confident that his 99 edition was better than the 95 squad. Sure the 95 Braves had won the Series and the 99 Braves had been swept by the Yankees, but his team had won 103, the most games ever won by a Braves' squad in Atlanta. He was confident 95 Bobby would start Greg Maddux in the first game of the series. Maddux had been dominant in 95, going 19-2 and posting a 1.63 ERA. He himself had been leaning toward starting 99 Maddux, but then he recalled a scene from the movie "Back to the Future." Christopher Lloyd, playing Doc Brown, had said something about how meeting a past or future version of yourself could result in the cataclysmic end of the universe. If that could happen if you just met yourself, how the hell bad would it be if you ended up pitching against yourself? 99 Bobby penciled Tom Glavine's name onto his lineup card.

Game 1

In the top of the ninth inning, Gerald Williams blasted his second double of the evening down the right field line to score pinch runner George Lombard from first and push the 1999 Braves past the 1995 Braves 3-2 in Game One of the Preseason Atlanta playoff.

The 99 Braves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Williams hit his first double and was driven in from second by a single to left by Brian Hunter. Chipper Jones singled and then Andruw Jones blooped a single to center scoring Hunter.

Winner Tom Glavine (1-0) pitched eight strong innings and kept the '95 Braves hitless until the bottom of the fourth. The '95 Braves finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Jeff Blauser opened the '95 Braves' half of the inning with a single. After Mark Lemke flied out to shallow left, Blauser stole second. Geg Maddux sacrifice bunted, sending Blauser to third. Marquis Grissom then singled, scoring Blauser and cutting the '99 Braves' lead to 2-1. Grissom picked up another RBI in the bottom of the 7th when he singled in Mark Lemke from third to deadlock the game 2-2.

In the top of the ninth, 99 Braves' Eddie Perez led off with a single. He was then replaced by pinch-runner George Lombard. After pinch-hitters Randall Simon and Javy Lopez both flew out, Williams hit what proved to be the game winning double. Despite giving up 10 hits, 95 Braves' ace Greg Maddux had a strong outing, going eight and two-thirds innings before retiring for a pinch hitter. He fanned seven '99 Braves.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Arizona Cardinals' Locker room

Coach Dave McGinnis gathered his Arizona Cardinals team together. "I think it's significant that we're the only team in this preseason tourney that is actually from Phoenix," he said. "Do we really want a team from St. Louis to represent the ARIZONA Cardinals?"

A resounding chorus of "Hell No"'s rang out. "Alright then," McGinnis continued, "they're calling us the underdogs here. Everyone is expecting "Air" Coryell to roll right over us. But if we all do our jobs, we can win this thing. We're the only Cardinals' team since 1947 to actually win anything in the postseason. So let's go out there and I want you all to leave everything you've got on that football field. There is no tomorrow for us."

A solemn silence filled the room. Jake Plummer stepped forward. "Let's put it together." The players gathered into a circle, thrust out their arms and joined hands in the middle. "ARIZONA CARDINALS on 3," Plummer said, "one, two, three..."

Fifty football warriors cried out together and then, with high hopes, jogged out of the locker room into the tunnel that led to the field.

WEEK ONE

1998 CARDINALS 31; 1974 CARDINALS 27

Adrian Murrel scored on a one yard run with just under three minutes to play in the game to give the 1998 Arizona Cardinals a 31-27 victory over the 1974 St. Louis Cardinals. Arizona took the opening kickoff and promptly drove 75 yards in nine plays. Arizona took a 7-0 lead when QB Jake Plummer tossed an 11-yard TD pass to TE Chris Gedney. St. Louis responded by driving to the Arizona eight-yard line before settling for a 25 yard Jim Bakken field goal. On Arizona's next possession, Murrell busted loose for a 33-yard TD run late in the period to give Arizona a 14-3 lead as the second quarter started.

Don Coryell decided to keep the ball on the ground, with QB Jim Hart handing off to RB Terry Metcalf and FB Jim Otis. St. Louis marched 73 yards in eight plays and capped the drive with a four yard TD run by Otis to make it 10-14. Plummer responded with a 10 play, 72 yard drive and Arizona increased its lead to 21-10 with a 17 yard TD pass from Plummer to Rob Moore. St. Louis' offense wasn't to be denied, however. As the second period started to wind down, Hart went to the air, going 3-for-3 for 62 yards, and St. Louis drove 77 yards in 10 plays and cut Arizona's lead to four, 17-21, when Metcalf scored from the 2 with just over a minute left to play in the half. Plummer was able to engineer a late drive and Jacke added three points to Arizona's lead, 24-17, on a 22 yard field goal as time expired.

St. Louis took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 61 yards in seven plays before settling for a 27 yard Bakken field goal to make it a 20-24 ballgame. Big plays included a 24 yard pass completion from Hart to Earl Thomas and a 30 yard rumble by Otis. St. Louis' defense stopped Arizona on its next drive, forcing them to punt for the first time. St. Louis then took the lead for the first time after driving 75 yards on 11 plays and scoring on an 11-yard run by Metcalf.

Both defenses stiffened during the final period and Jacke and Bakken both missed field goal opportunities. With six and a half minutes to play, Arizona started a drive that pushed 69 yards in eight plays. A nice chunk of that yardage came on a 31 yard pass from Plummer to Eric Metcalf (Terry's son). Murrell scored to make it 31-27 with 2:59 to play. Murrell led all rushers with 117 yards on 18 carries.

St. Louis wasn't ready to give up, however. Hart drove his team to Arizona's five yard-line. The 74Cards were unable to capitalize and punch the ball into the endzone. On fourth and goal, Jim Harts desperation heave was knocked away Aeneas Williams to presreve Arizona's victory.

99 Braves vs. 95 Braves -- Game 2

For the second day in a row, Tom Glavine won and Greg Maddux lost. However, it was the 95 Braves' Glavine who pitched a 4-hit shutout and helped his team even the series 1-1 with a 10-0 victory. Fred McGriff went 3-for-5, hit a homer and drove in four runs.

PREVIEW: 1914 Boston Braves vs. 1957 Milwaukee Braves

1914 Boston Braves

In 1914 with baseball genius George Stallings managing, the rowdy Braves thrived under one rule -- Do what you want but don’t wind up in jail and come to play everyday. In the perfect environment for the zany shortstop Walter "Rabbit" Maranville, who once jumped into a hotel fish tank, the Boston Braves, behind two 26-game winning pitchers, a former Cubs great, and a rotation of eleven outfielders shocked the baseball world and swept the World Series.

The quintessence of mediocrity in the first half, the Boston Braves sat in last place at 33-43, 15-½ games behind the first place Giants on July 19th. It must be recognized that the Braves were 7-3 in their last ten games going into the day. After losing a July 4th doubleheader to Brooklyn and an exhibition with the Buffalo club of the International League, the boys ended the first half well. They were unable, however, to gain any ground on McGraw’s Giants. After the American holiday of Independence, the Tribe became a united All-American baseball machine. The rest of the baseball realm watched as the Miracle Man, George Stallings, and his rowdies took 51 of their next 67 games.

1957 Milwaukee Braves

The '57 Braves had, on their roster, four Hall of Famers- Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Warren Spahn, and Red Schoendienst. Spahn is considered by many, along with Lefty Grove, Steve Carlton, Randy Johnson and Whitey Ford, as one of the greatest left handed starting pitchers of all time. Eddie Mathews was rated by Bill James in his Historical Baseball Abstract as the third greatest 3B of all time, behind only Mike Schmidt and George Brett. In the same book, Hank Aaron was named the second greatest RF of all time, behind only Babe Ruth. Schoendienst, while perhaps not entirely worthy of Hall of Fame selection, had one of his two greatest seasons in 1957 (the other being 1953 in St. Louis) after being acquired from the Giants for Danny O'Connell, Ray Crone and Bobby Thomson.

14 Braves vs. 57 Braves -- Game 1

It was a miracle, but for the wrong team. After falling behind 7-1, the 1957 Milwaukee Braves exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth and then coasted to a 14-7 victory over the 'miracle' 1914 Boston Braves. Both starting pitchers were hit hard. Milwaukee's Warren Spahn was pulled from the game in the top of the fifth after walking Boston's Red Smith and Johnny Evers and then giving up a single to Larry Gilbert and a double to Bill James! James ran into trouble in Milwaukee's half of the inning, allowing singles to Frank Torre and Johnny Logan, walking Eddie Mathews and then watching Hank Aaron blast a three-run shot over the fence.
