So what is THE football sim to get this year?

Of all the titles that are either already out or announced, what do you see as being the one to get this football season?

If you want something "already out or announced" by name, then I'd go with BBCF. If you consider Solecismic Software's statement that it will be releasing a new version of one of their football games this year to be "announced," then either FOF6 or TCY2 would definitely need to be taken into serious consideration.

Ben,

Have you done any multiplayer with BBCF, and if so, what has been your experience?

Thanks.

I'm in a multiplayer league (I think...they may have booted me by now), but just didn't get into it. I'm not sure that it was the game's fault. It was more the fact that the way I play BBCF (lots of time recruiting, sim through seasons pretty quickly, focus on long-term growth of the program, rather than any particular group of players) is completely non-conducive to the slow multiplayer environment. It's great for SP, though, at least for the way I want to play.

What has actually been announced as far as other games?

I consider FOF'06/TCY2 to be announced, enough for me to make that the must have for me this year. I know it's one of them, and thats enough for me to plan ahead. Crap, I have a league that involves both games, I should be fired if I didn't plan on buying whatever the game is.

I passed on BBCF. Although if TCY2 isn't the Solecismic game this year then I may grab it.

I guess by announced, I mean something that we know will be out around the beginning of football season.

I haven't heard much about either BBCF or MF. Which is the better game from a coaching perspective?

Does anyone know if the new FOF (if there is one) would be compatible with prior seasons/leagues of FOF2004? It would seriously suck if all the MP leagues out there could not continue with their rosters and league history. I think Jim would have to allow an import from the prior version. It would also make good financial sense because if it is not compatible, a lot of sales would be lost. I for one only play MP and would not want to switch to FOF2006 for our league if the history and rosters were lost.

I belive Jim has basically said that he sees the desire/benefit to having the leagues carry over, but has said that he can't guarantee that new versions will have leagues carry over.

I would suggest it is in his financial interest to do so.

Even so, I believe it is difficult to program in.

I don't know much about modern programming languages, so help me with this thought. How difficult is it to create a utility that simply does the following:

1. Export the real ratings, including whatever may be "hidden".
2. Put the existing ratings into the order that the Player File Generator for the next version could use.
3. Use a combination of the existing attributes, overall player ability, position, and random numbers to "fill in the blanks" with whatever new ratings there are. For example, if a new game were to have ratings for special teams broken down into "coverage units", "return units," and "ability to block punts/kicks" then start with the "special teams" rating from the old game, give guys who play defense normally a little boost in "coverage" (since they're used to tackling), and a little negative in "return." We know that the game internally generates 40 times and weight room results, so maybe use a combination of special teams rating, 40 time and whatever other ratings suggest athleticism (getting downfield?, pass rush technique?) to come up with the "ability to block punts/kicks" rating.

Am I missing something here? It might not be a perfect conversion, and not as "pure" a league as would be created with the in-game player generator for the new version, but at least it would be pretty close.

I'm not positive, but I think Jim has said before that if the he uses a similar file structure to make it compatible to past games it could limit features he can include. (I don't know much about programming either.)

Same thought here...

Yes, SD, in 'theory' what you posted would work... but we all know how Jim feels about distribution of talent, etc, etc. and how much it can effect gameplay. Just consider the thoughts of how much the alternate player file for IHOF potentially effects the outcomes of the games, so to havea bunch of players created in this way could really have an impact on how the realism turns out, etc because it's not in his normal intended distribution..

I'm going on a hunger strike until Jim makes the new game compatible with prior versions. I like SD's idea.
