World’s Greatest Sport Show: LA Diablos 2003

In FOF we make a lot of house rules that help to make the game more challenging/interesting. What if a real NFL team did some of these things? How would the fans and others respond?

Basically I’m using a modified version of Quiksand’s House Arrest rules. I think most readers know the basics. No renegotiating, no picking FA’s until the 11th round, no franchise player etc. I’ll give more “game” details if people want it, but you should catch most of the House Rules within the storyline.

In between game summaries, there will be a snippet of the “World’s Greatest Sport Show”. There might be an interview with a player or a coach, some calls from LA Diablos fans, or maybe just a rant from the show host Johnny “the Homer” Free.
Feel free to “e-mail” the Homer by posting to this thread.

History

In a nutshell, Year One sucked. The team is still looking for its first win. Fans are not happy, the team owner is not happy, and the Los Angeles media is all over the organization.

Welcome to Year Two.

Owner SplitPersonality was heard saying that Coach Keister must win at least 4 games this season to keep his job. He is rumored to be extremely disappointed in the highly paid coach. Keister is currently the highest paid coach in the league with an annual salary of $7 million.

SplitP could not be reached for comment.

This is Johnny “the Homer” Free and tonight we are going to discuss the Diablos. What could be done, what should be done, what do you think will be done. Will they lose 11 more in a row become the losingist expansion team in history? I don’t think so, but then again, I didn’t think they would go 0-16. Let’s analyze the various parts of the team and get your perpectives. Tell me what you think?.......Hollywood Frank, You’re up first. What do you think about the quarterback situation?

HF. Hey Homer. You know how I feel about Stokes. He is one of the worst QB’s in the game. What was his rating. Something like 50?

Homer: Actually it was 52.

HF: Whatever. He sucks.

Homer: What’s your solution Frank, do we dump Stokes or see if he improves.

HF: I think Stokes is kind of like Trent Dilfer. I don’t think he will ever be good. Dump him like a bad habit.

Homer: Got it Frank. Although I want to remind Frank that Dilfer did wina a Superbowl for the Ravens a few years back…….next on the line is Mister X. Your topic is coaching. Do we keep Keister or should owner SplitPersonality fire him.

X: Keep him, Homer. Keep him. I really like the guy.

Homer: Even though he has yet to win a game for LA?

X: Yeah. This guy was a winner in Atlanta and if anyone can turn this thing around, I think Keister can.

Homer: Keister can…..Kind of redundant Mister X.

X: Huh?

Homer: Nevermind. Point taken…next we have Mr. Negative. What is your take on the offensive line?

Negative: Pathetic Homer, just pathetic.

Homer: My show or the o-line.

Negative: Both actually, but I was referring to the previous caller. They should fire Keister’s *bleep*.

Homer: That was redundant as well Mr. Negative.

Negative: What was?

Homer: Tough crowd tonight….The o-line, what do you think should be done with the o-line.

Negative: The guys they have are not very good, and they need to replace them all.

Homer: I agree in principle, unfortunately, all twelve guys are still under contract. By their own self imposed “rules”, the Diablos are unable to release any of those players. We are stuck with them for at least one more year.

Negative: That is so incredibly stupid. Why would the owner handcuff the team like that? Idiot.

Homer: Perhaps, but he is the owner and can do whatever he wants…….Last up is Big Momma. Tell me about the defense, Momma.

BM: Hiya Homer. I think that the defense will be much better this year. The defensive ends and linebackers are decent and should improve for next year. They should probably draft for a defensive tackle or two. Also they need to improve the secondary. Is there anyone worthwhile in free agency?

Homer: I’m not sure. There aren’t going to be many second and third year players available.

BM: If they could find just one or two to plug up some of their holes, they will be fine. I definitely don’t think they will go winless again. They actually have some talent on the team and a good draft and free agency period will get them a few more wins.

Homer: Sounds like you’ve done your homework.

BM: I suppose. I just love football.

Homer: Thanks Momma. Well folks, that’s all we have time for. See you later.

LA Diablos

C Scott O’Pope – 960k for 2 years – O’Pope was highly rated in last year’s draft and went #16 to Arizona. They thought he was a bust, but LA obviously thinks he is good enough to be a backup to Dwight Farr. He is a better run blocker than pass blocker but the knock on him is that he tires too easily and cannot play every down.

DE Norbert Saperstein – 3.9m for 2 years (560k bonus) – He originally wanted 4.09m for 2 years but relented at the urging of his agent. He is a good pass rusher and will be a good complement to Mark Bruce and Kenneth Weber.

DT Mark Rangel - 19.53m for 5 years (2.45m bonus) – Rangel is a quality guy that just wanted to be a starter. His original asking price was well over 25 million, but no one bit. He should make a big difference in the Diablo defense.

LB Ronnie Wilt – 4.36m for 3 years – Wilt has 1 game of NFL experience to his name, and will probably just serve as backup for LA.

CB Mark Kennedy – 3.87m for 2 years – Rumor has it that Kennedy did not budge in his negotiations with the Diablos. He excels in zone defense, but is somewhat of a project. He is good enough to start now in LA, and should develop into an above average corner.

Homer here, we just have a few minutes left in the show and I have Joe Schmoe from Football Universe here to discuss the upcoming draft. What are your feelings on the top draft prospects Joe?

Schmoe: This is a very top heavy draft. They are many good players that will go in the first round, but slim pickings after that. I don’t thnk you are going to get any superstars coming out the lower rounds this year.

Homer: That doesn’t sound good for LA.

Schmoe: No, it doesn’t

Homer: Hmmm. Who do you think they should take with the first pick

Schmoe: I know they just signed Saperstein in free agency, but they should probably go with DE Henry Dunn out of Howard. I think he is going to be a great one. Also, there are a number of quality linebackers that would complement Huntley.

Homer: What about quarterback?

Schmoe: Well….Justin Tsoi is the best of the bunch, maybe Robert McMichael. Personally I think both are a stretch for the first pick overall.

Homer: Great stuff Joe. Thanks for stopping by. Check out Joe’s website for more info. See ya folks.

Excerpt from Football Universe Website

Joe’s thoughts on the top 10 draftees
1 Mike Newton – TE – 6-0 – 245# - Missouri – This kid is probably one of the best tight ends to come out of college in a long time. He has Hall of Fame potential.

2 Barry Jacobs – LB – 6-2 – 234# - Vanderbilt – Jacobs has modest talents now, but has the potential to develop into a perennial all-pro linebacker.

3 Darnell Allen – LB – 6-0 – 254# - USC – Although equally good at man to man and zone defense, I feel that Allen is a bit overrated.

4 Donovan McGee – S – 6-1 – 208# - Ohio State – McGee was a great safety in college, but will probably be relegated to a return specialist role in the NFL. I think that many scouts have him rated too highly.

5 Henry Dunn – DE – 6-4 – 243# - Howard – This is a very high quality player. Dunn is known for his tremendous stamina and ability to play through pain. It may take a year or two, but he will be a force to be reckoned with.

6 Benjamin Tarkenton – LB – 6-0 – 251# - South Carolina – Easily the best name among the top ten, Tarkenton should be a solid player in the NFL, maybe as early as next year.

7 Bobby Adams – FB – 6-0 – 237# - Mars Hill – Mr. Adams is the most overrated player in this year’s draft. I would not touch him with a ten foot pole.

8 Lawrence Abrams – S – 5-10 – 207# - Temple – This kid is a project. I would not draft him, but try to pick him up in free agency in a few years.

9 Kent Bautista – WR – 6-1 – 193# - Iowa – Decent receiver, but there are probably a few more out there that are not rated quite as high. I would pass in the first round.

10 Kent Keenan – LB – 6-3 – 226# - SE Oklahoma State – The fourth linebacker in the top ten should develop into a fantastic run stopper & man-to-man coverage guy. He is a steal anywhere below the top ten picks.

Draft Day

And the #1 pick of the 2003 Draft is …… Quarterback Justin Tsoi from Nicholls State

One week later

Homer: We have a special guest today on the World’s Greatest Sport Show. We have #1 draft pick Justin Tsoi in studio. Welcome to the show Justin.

Tsoi: Thanks Homer.

Homer: First things first. Just how do you pronounce that last name of yours?

Tsoi: It’s “soy”. Like soy bean.

Homer: Got it. I keep hearing people say “Ta-soy” and it drives me nuts.

Tsoi: Me too.

Homer: Are you happy that LA picked you?

Tsoi: Of course. I will get a chance to make my mark on this team. I hope to be the answer to the trivia question “Which QB led the LA Diablos to their first victory?”

Homer: So you think you’re going to start next season?....................(silence)…………..don’t shrug your shoulders Justin, this is radio. No one can see you.

Tsoi: Sorry Homer.

Homer: Again. Do you think you will start ahead of the established quarterback Sammie Stokes?

Tsoi: Obviously it is not my call. The player that has the best camp and shows poise in the preseason will get the job…..And I do believe it will be me.

Homer: Isn’t that a bit cocky?.................(silence)………….Grinning is like shrugging. Both are visual. This is radio.

Tsoi: My bad Homer.

Homer: Yes. It was………….Last question. Just where is Nicholls State anyway?

Tsoi: It’s in LA Homer.

Homer: LA?

Tsoi: Yeah. Louisiana.

Homer: Good one Justin.

Tsoi: No prob Homer.

RumorMill from Football Universe Website

LA quarterback Scottie Stokes is reported as being very unhappy with rookie Justin Tsoi. He is quoted as saying the following: “Just cuz he is a number 1 pick does not guarantee the son of a b**ch a f***ing thing.”

Looks like we have a QB controversy in LA.

Homer: Unlike last year’s cattle call, training camp is a lot less crowded as the Diablos invited just 53 players. Barring some unforeseen problems, all players in camp will make the team. What are your thoughts on the upcoming season? Will the Diablos win? Who should start at QB? Do you like the lopsided schedule? Speak to me LA!........Be back after the break.

Homer: I am Johnny “the Homer” Free and this is Lead Scout for the LA Diablos Nate Mojica. Say hi Nate.

Mojica: Hi.

Homer: Well Nate, you guys did it again. You ignored the consensus picks and went for someone else.

Mojica: It’s not like Tsoi was completely off the radar screen. Even that Joe Schmoe guy you had on your show mentioned him.

Homer: True, but he was still not considered one of the best overall players in this year’s draft.

Mojica: We hit a home run last year when we selected Fred Huntley and we did it again with Justin Tsoi.

Homer: So Tsoi will start this season?

Mojica: If he wins the job in training camp.

Homer: But you said you hit a home run.

Mojica: Stop putting words in my mouth, Homer. He will eventually be the starter; it just might not be this season.

Homer: What about the other draft picks, what can we expect from them?.

Mojica: Second round pick safety C.J. Pifott will eventually be a key fixture in our secondary. We expect big things from him. Maybe not this year, but soon. We thought he would be gone by the second round, so we were happy to get him.

Homer: Third rounder DT Edward Uffins?

Mojica: If Pifott hadn’t been available, we would have taken Uffins in round two. We feel that we got a steal. He will be a critical part of the defense in a year or two.

Homer: Fourth rounder DT Karl Shaw?

Mojica: Another solid defensive player. With Shaw, Uffins and free agent pickup Rangel, we think we have a pretty good core of young players. We hope to keep them together for a long time.

Homer: WR Watkins?

Mojica: Edward Watkins played right in our backyard at USC. He was a solid college player and should do well for us.

Homer: The kicker Roosevelt Forbes?

Mojica: If he kicks like he did at Oregon State, he will be a big improvement over Alfred Moss from last year.

Homer: I would be a better kicking choice than Moss. I hate to say it, but he cost you one game for sure, maybe two. Lastly how about linebacker Scott Mason.

Mojica: I was in shock when Mason fell all the way to the seventh round. He will be a very good linebacker and will complement Huntley and Disney in the coming years.

Homer: Well Nate, it was a pleasure to have you on the show.

Mojica: No prob, Homer.

From LA Diablos page on the Football Universe Website

Training camp 2003 was very good to the Diablos. It looks like the Diablos scouts know what they are doing as only 1 of their 14 draft picks can be categorized as a bust. It’s early, but all signs point to the draft picks becoming productive members of the team. Not all will start this year, but the future looks bright.

The most improved player has got to be center Dwight Farr. He is easily the best player on the offensive line and should help solidify a unit that was incredibly schizophrenic last year. Both fullbacks Malone and Walters also improved over last year, but it is unknown which will get the starting nod.

Another position in doubt is quarterback. Both Stokes and Tsoi improved as camp went on, but the starting position will not be determined until the preseason games begin.

Rookie kicker Roosevelt Forbes has shown a lot of accuracy and has received the nickname of Money. He may not be “money in the bank” on every field goal; he is a vast improvement over Moss.

Other positions in flux are running back (either Vince Luck or Heath Truitt); #2 wide receiver (Shannon, rookie Watkins & Harding); starting guard (Levine, Burgess or Mills); and in defensive end (Weber, free agent Saperstein or Harrison).

From LA Diablos Page on Football Universe Website

Quarterback Controversy

Stokes opened up with an iffy 10 for 19 – 74 yard performance against the NY Jets in Game 1 of the preseason. Tsoi followed that up with a nice 16 for 25 – 124 yards. Neither QB could get the team across the endzone and the Diablos lost the game 7-0.

In the second game against Tennessee, Stokes played perhaps his best game in a Diablo uniform. He went 10 for 14 and 70 yards and 1 td pass. Unfortunately for him, Tsoi came out in the second half and completed all 11 of his pass attempts. It was simply amazing to watch. The Diablos went on to win their very first game of any kind 17-6.

The NFC Champion Dallas Cowboys did not seem to faze Tsoi as he completed 15 for 21, 97 yards and 1 td. He also threw his first interception of the preseason. Sammie came in the middle of the third and went 6 for 10. He too, threw an interception. LA gave it a go and stayed with the ‘Boys, but did lose in the end DAL 17 LA 10.

The final game of the preseason sealed Stokes’ fate. He played the first half and only had 5 completions. Tsoi did not do much better going 8 for 18 with 2 pics, but the damage had been done. Justin Tsoi will be the Diablos starting QB.

The final score of the game was a scary NE 51 LA 0. Hopefully, that will not be a sign of things to come.

Preseason Aggregate Quarterback Stats

4 Tsoi 75 50 334 4.5 34 1 3 8 2

From 2003 Outlook on the Football Universe Website

Los Angeles Diablos – Projected Finish (3-13, last in the AFC West)

Coach: Jack Keister (second year with LA, overall NFL record 24-28)
Keister is considered a very good coach, but he must prove it this season by winning a few games. If he wins three, his reputation may stay intact. If the team surprises people and they get a few upset wins, his stock will return to the lofty levels it was at before he took the Diablo job. We will see.
Schmoe’s Grade: B

Quarterback: Justin Tsoi ‘s big talk before training camp was backed up during the preseason. He is loud, cocky and somewhat obnoxious. He also seems to be a pretty good quarterback. With the current guys on the o-line, he may spend a lot of time on his back. I expect an average year from him in 2003. Just wait ‘till next year.
Schmoe’s Grade: C

Running Game: Heath Truitt will be the number one running back this season since Vince Luck will double as the backup and as the #5 reciever. There will not be muxh improvement over last year.
Schmoe’s Grade: D

Receivers: Mitch Bush is Mister Preseason. Just like last year, he was outstanding and was an easy choice as the number one receiver. Roosevelt Shannon, rookie Edward Watkins and Maurice Harding are ready to step in if Bush falters again.
Schmoe’s Grade: C

O-Line: Center Dwight Farr is the only legitimate starter on the O-line. Things may get a little hairy for our young QB.
Schmoe’s Grade: D

Kicking Game: Punter Preston Gustafson is back and should have an average year. He is not a liability. Hopefully, rookie kicker Roosevelt “Money” Forbes will not be either. He was a perfect 2 for 2 in the preseason.
Schmoe’s Grade: C

Defensive Ends/Tackles: Right End Mark Bruce led the team in sacks with 10.5. Free agent Norm Saperstein and Kenneth Weber will combine on the left side and should be just fine. The Defensive tackle position is a bit muddled. They all have similar preseason stats and no one stands out. It will be starter by committee until someone steps up.
Schmoe’s Grade: C

Linebackers: Huntley, Disney & Hunter will once again lead this unit. They should be even better with another year under their belts.
Schmoe’s Grade: B

Secondary: The cornerback position is still a huge problem for this team. None of the corners on this roster would start anywhere in the league. On the other hand, the addition of rookie C.J. Pifott greatly improves the safety spot. He and Terry Livesay should do well.
Schmoe’s Grade: D+

Overall Impressions: They have a very soft schedule and should eke out at least three wins, maybe as many as 5, although that’s pushing it. If Tsoi plays well, they should be just fine.
Overall Grade: C-

After preseason

Homer: The new football season starts on Sunday and personally, I don’t know what to think. The team has improved since last year and I like a number of the personnel moves, but just how good (or bad) are the Diablos? ……………….Anti-Homer, you’re on the air.

AH: Hi Homer, are you ready for another 0-16 season?

Homer: You don’t really think they will go winless again.

AH: No, but they are still going to stink homer. They’ve got a handful of legitimate starters and the rest are just awful.

Homer: So you think they will win how many games?

AH: My guess is two.

Homer: I hope not. If so, it’s going to be another long season in LA……Left Field, what do you think?

LF: Anti-Homer is nuts, they will win seven year.

Homer: Seven? How do you figure?

LF: The only good teams they play this year are Oakland and San Diego. That means they play 12 games against bad teams. They should win half of those. That makes six. They should go 1-3 against the Raiders and the Chargers. That makes seven.

Homer: Hmmmm. I hate to say this, but that actually sounds reasonable. I don’t think I’ve ever said that about any of your comments before Left Field.

LF: And if they are really lucky, they could win a couple more and make it to the playoffs. Then anything could happen. Who knows, maybe a Superbowl.

Homer: There’s the Left Field we know and love. You’re nuts man.

LF: Any given Sunday Homer, anything can happen.

Week 1

Los Angeles Diablos (0-0) vs. New York Jets (0-0) – Vegas Line NYJ by 14

Injured Starter
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks

44,900 eager fans came to Diablos Stadium hoping to see their team win its first ever game. LA kicked off to the Jets to start the game. The defense shut them down in three and it was the Diablos turn with ball on their own 31.

On the first play of the drive, Justin Tsoi was sacked by xxx Jones. Not a good start. Tsoi followed it up with 5 consecutive passes and got down to the NY 28. Then Heath Truitt ran off right guard for 7; nice key run block by Farr. First and 10 on the NY21. On the next play, Tsoi was sacked again. 2nd and 15. Tsoi underthrew his next pass intended for Shannon. Vince Luck ran up the middle for 2 and the drive stalled at the 24. Roosevelt Forbes drilled the 41 yard kick, and LA has the lead 3-0.

The next New York possession was another 3 and out, including a sack by Disney and Bruce. After two drives NY has just 1 yard of total offense. The rest of the first quarter was uneventful.

The Jets came alive in the second with a long methodical drive down to the LA 6. The Diablos defense stiffened up and the Jets settled for a field goal. On New York’s next possession, they marched down the field looking for a td. However, QB Chad Pennington threw a pass to the endzone, but it was intercepted by CB Mark Kennedy. On the next play, Tsoi threw a short pass which was in turn intercepted and returned back to the LA1. The Diablos defense held firm once again and they had to settle for another field goal. The score remained the same until the half NYJ 6 LA 3. Not a bad first half.

LA opened the third quarter with a quick three and out possession. That’s when all hell broke loose. New York scored a touchdown on each of their next four possessions to break the game wide open. The Diablos offense was stuck and only had 1 first down in the entire second half. The Jets added insult to injury when they scored one more field goal following a LA fumble. Final Score: NYJ 37 LA 3

Good News: Justin Tsoi began the game with 5 straight completions. Defense played a great first half.

Week 2

Los Angeles Diablos (0-1) at. Tennessee Titans (0-1) – Vegas Line TEN by 9

Injured Starter
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks

LA beat Tennessee in the preseason and is looking for a regular season win. They open with the ball but get zero yards in three plays. The Titans march down and get three…The Titans march down and get 7…The Titans march down and get 3….See a pattern. At the half, the Diablos were in the hole 30-0. They had just 2 first downs and Tsoi threw two interceptions.

The second half was much better. LA got 9 first downs and Tsoi threw a nice 21 yard pass to Maurice Harding. The defense did a good job of stopping the Titans holding them to 52 yards passing and 7 points. Final Score: TEN 37 LA 7

Good News: Justin Tsoi became the first LA Diablo QB to throw for more than 250 yards in a game going 15 for 38 and 254 yards. DE Mark Bruce recorded 3 sacks. Huntley had 12 tackles and 4 assists.

Bad News: The offensive line gave up 8 sacks. RB Heath Truitt ran 1 play for -1 yard before he got hurt and had to leave the game. RB Vince Luck also left early with a broken nose.

AFC West Notes: KC lost 12-10 to OAK in another close game.

Standings: OAK (2-0), SD & SEA (1-1), LA, DEN & KC (0-2)

Rumor has it that after the Diablos 37-7 loss to the Titans, rookie quarterback Justin Tsoi lit into his offensive line. His was quoted as saying “Would you sorry mother**** get your sh** together. How the hell am I suppose to throw the ball when my a** is buried in the turf.” Guard Winfred Burgess responded with “Hey rook, keep talking like that and I will let them take you out next week”

Before Tsoi could respond, about five players including center Dwight Farr ripped into Burgess. There was some mild pushing and shoving and at that time, and all reporters were asked to leave the locker room. A two hour closed door meeting followed.

According to unnamed sources within the organization, Burgess is no longer the starting left guard.

Homer: This is Johnny “the Homer” Free and I am depressed. Two bad losses and we are heading into Chiefs week. KC’s idiot coach is once again complaining that his team gets no respect. He is upset with the 5.5 points that Vegas is giving his team. What an idiot…..oh great….on the line is our resident KC fan, Big Chief.

BC: Hello Homer. Why are you calling Coach Jurgenson an idiot? He’s right. KC should be favored by at least a touchdown.

Homer: Chief, you’re team is 0-2, just like LA. They don’t deserve any respect.

BC: Have you checked the stats lately Homer. Your quarterback Toy…

Homer: That’s Tsoi.

BC: Whatever. He has the worst stats in the league. Your buddy Nate blew the draft this time. He is a bust. He’s worse than the guy you had last year. And he’s a headcase. I know this is LA, but I’ve never seen this much drama on a professional football team.

Homer: The rookie has a point. In two games he has been sacked 10 times. LA QB’s were sacked a total of 41 times over the entire last season.

BC: The kid is a whiner, and I hope the KC linebackers crush him next week.

Homer: What’s your prediction?

BC: Chiefs win a lopsided game, maybe 35-10. And Mr. Tsoi will get sacked 5 times.

Homer: I say that LA wins a close one 13-10. Shall we make this a ten dollar bet for charity?

BC: You’re on Homer.

Injured Starters
Winfred Burgess, G - Broken Nose, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks
Vince Luck, RB - Broken Nose, full strength in 3-5 Weeks

LA won the toss and elected to receive. On the kickoff, Heath Truitt returned the ball back to the LA28 and was tackled by Stanton…..Fumble!…..recovered by S Tommy Harvey who runs it back 72 yards for the touchdown. LA leads 7-0.

Both teams went three and out. On KC’s next possession, they got down to the LA43 and were forced to punt. Heath Truitt mishandled the kick , fumbled and Kansas City recovered on the LA 3! The Diablo defense came up big allowing just 1 yard and the Chiefs settle for a field goal. The rest of the first quarter is uneventful and the score is LA 7 KC. Kansas City has just 35 yards passing and –14 yards rushing to this point.

In the middle of the second, LA gets a very long 14-play drive down to the KC19. The field goal attempt went up….and “Money” misses his first kick of the season. The Chiefs get another field goal just before the end of the half and the score is a very close 7-6.

In the middle of the third, Kansas City had a drive get near midfield. Three consecutive penalties pushed them back 25 yards and they eventually punted. A very poor 27 yard punt followed by a 14 yard return gave LA excellent field position on the KC34. Two short passes followed by a 28 yard run by Vince Luck gave LA another td. LA had an eight point lead; 14-6.

The Chiefs get to midfield once again but Dunlap, the quarterback, threw an errant pass right to safety Terry Livesay. The Diablos do not take advantage of the turnover. Both teams trade three and out possessions. With 40 seconds left in the third, KC had the ball on their own 20. QB Dunlap was dropped by Hunter for a sack to end the quarter. Score is still LA 14 KC 6.

Three plays later, Dunlap is sacked again, this time by DT DeFelice and DE Mark Bruce…..Fumble!…..recovered by Bruce who lumbered forward 12 yards to the KC 38. Unfortunately, LA cannot move the ball and were forced to punt once again. KC got it back at their own 1 yard line. Two plays later, the Chiefs were called for offensive holding in the endzone. Safety! LA takes a 10 point lead with 11:12 to go.

LA got the ball back and Tsoi began to march down the field. Tsoi to Bush for 13; Tsoi to Bush for 16; Tsoi to Shannon for 6; Tsoi to Bush for 9; Tsoi to Bush for 17. Wow! The kid is on a roll. Rookie free agent Hennessee got the call and ran for 2 yards. Tsoi threw once more, this time to Al Delgado for another td. The small crowd of 37,400 is going crazy. Score: LA 23 KC 6 with 6:56 to go.

Kansas City got the ball and Dunlap completed a 33 yard pass to Morris. He then threw a 52 yard bomb to Morris, and suddenly KC was inside the LA10. One more quick pass by Dunlap for the td and the Chiefs are down by 10. Score LA 23 KC 13 with 5:47 remaining. This one isn’t over yet.

KC’s onside kick attempt is unsuccessful, but LA wastes the good field position by going three and out. 3:22 on the clock.

Kansas City starts on their 20and gets a run for no gain. Dunlap tries a pass to his favorite target Morris, but the ball was batted down by Mark Kennedy. Third and 10. Dunlaps gets out of the jam by connecting with Morris for 12. First down, ball on the KC32.

Dunlap was sacked by DE Vince Harrison, but the quarterback quickly recovers and throws a beautiful 29 yard spiral to a wide open receiver. First and ten on the LA44. Dunlap threw another bomb and this time it was caught in the endzone. Score; LA 23 KC 20.

On the kickoff, the Chiefs were called for a face mask penalty and LA started on their own 44 with 2:09 to go.

Tsoi overthrows the ball. Second and 10 – 1:54 left

Hennesee ran for no gain. KC called a timeout. Third and ten – 1:47 on the clock.

Heath Truitt gets a 10 yard gain through a hole caused by center Dwight Farr. First down, ball on the KC46. Timeout KC. 1:36 left.

Hennessee ran off left guard for 15 yards. Dwight Farr got another key run block. Timeout KC; they have no more. First down on the KC31 with 1:24 to go.

Heath Truitt gets a 1 yard run. 44 seconds left

Justin Tsoi takes a knew and LA wins its first game in franchise history.

*Note* This game summary was rewritten for clarity. I have to stop writing these up at 1 am.

Postgame Press Conference

Reporter 1: So, Justin, how does it feel to win a NFL game?

Tsoi: Pretty damn good.

Reporter 2: You had some harsh words for your teammates last week, what do you think of the job they did this week.

Tsoi: I said some things that week that I probably shouldn’t have said, but….notice how my game improved when I wasn’t eating turf.

Reporter 3: You did get sacked twice.

Tsoi: I can handle 2 or 3, but you gotta admit that 8 is way too many.

Reporter 1: You were today’s game MVP. What did you do think contributed to your success on the field?

Tsoi: Actually guys, I don’t deserve the MVP today. I would like to give the game ball to my friend Dwight Farr. He saved my butt all game; plus he had two awesome block at the end of the game to keep the ball out of the Chiefs hands.

Farr: Thanks man.

Tsoi: No problem

Reporter 2: So there are no more problems between the qb and the offensive line

Tsoi: No. We’re just fine.

After the big win in week 3, LA begins a five game road swing with a trip to the Mile High City. Justin Tsoi hit a big 17 yard pass to Mitch Bush on the second play of the game, but the drive stalled near the 40 yard line. The Broncos begin a along, plodding drive that had the defense very confused. LA seemed to get their act together as Denver crossed midfield, and they managed to hold Denver to a Jason Elam field goal kick. LA returned the favor with a long drive of their own, culminating in a field goal by Roosevelt Forbes right at the end of the first quarter. Score: 3-3.

LA began another nice drive in the second, but Tsoi threw an interception. Denver capitalized on the turnover and scored another field goal. At halftime, the Diablos are defiantly still it the game down just 6-3.

The game bogged down in the third as neither team put up any offense. Late in the quarter, Tsoi threw another interception and the Broncos capitalized again, this time with a touchdown early in the fourth.

Tsoi and the Diablos stuck back with a 69-yard bomb to Roosevelt Shannon to get to the Denver 11. The Broncos D held form and LA was forced to kick another field goal. DEN 13 LA 6. Time remaining: 12:05. The teams traded possessions until Denver got the ball back with 9:41 to go. They drove the length of the field and set up Elam for his third field goal try of the day. The kick goes wide right and LA is still in this. 4:44 remaining.

LA goes three and out as Tsoi is sacked for the fifth time. Denver gets the back ball and on the second play, Terrell Davis got a 63 yard td run to squash the Diablos hopes for a winning streak.

On LA’s next drive, Tsoi fumbled in Diablo territory and Denver scored another touchdown a few plays later. AFC West Notes: KC lost in a wild game at New England; 45-39. Oakland lost to San Francisco 12-7 and San Diego lost to St. Louis 38-17.

Standings: SEA (2-1), OAK, DEN & SD (2-2), LA (1-3), (KC (0-4)

Los Angeles Diablos (1-3) at Atlanta Falcons (4-0) – Vegas Line ATL by 19

Injured Starters
Winfred Burgess, G - Broken Nose, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Wesley Alexander, T - Hip Pointer, full strength in 0-2 Weeks - out
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play
Kenneth Weber, DE - Dislocated Knee, full strength in 2-3 Months - out
Vince Luck, RB - Broken Nose, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play
Edward Watkins, WR - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks - out

66,000 plus came out to see the undefeated Falcons square off against former coach Jack Keister. Many in the crowd booed as the head coach took the field. This was a very hostile crowd.

LA opened up with a quick 3 and out. Atlanta countered with a long drive that ended in a missed field goal. On LA’s second drive, the Diablos marched down to midfield until Justin Tsoi was injured. He had gone 4 for 6 for 27 yards. Former starter Sammie Stokes came in and promptly threw an interception that was returned 57 yards back for a touchdown. ATL 7 LA 0. In the middle of the second, LA managed to get a field goal, but the Falcons answered back with another td just before the half. ATL 14 LA 3.

At the half, the two teams have comparable numbers. LA – 7 first downs, 23 yards rushing & 92 yards passing. ATL – 8 first downs, 37 yards rushing & 112 yards passing.

The second half was a completely different game. The Falcons scored three easy touchdowns in their first four possessions to take control of the game 35-3. The Diablo offense could not move the ball at all. They did not give up however and scored a touchdown in the middle of the fourth quarter. After the missed conversion, it was 35-9. LA tried an onside kick, which failed, but the LA defense finally got a stop. Unfortunately they went 3 and out again and Atlanta had the ball on the LA38 with 38 seconds left in the game.

After three unsuccessful running plays and three LA timeouts, Atlanta shaowed a terrible sense of sportsmanship by lining up to attempt a 56 yard kick with 12 seconds left in the game! Richey’s kick was up….and well short of the crossbar. 6 seconds left. As a final insult, Sammie Stokes was sacked on the next play to end the game. Final Score: ATL 35 LA 9.

Good News: LA played a decent first half.

Bad News: LA had 46 yards of total offense during the entire second half.

KC Watch: KC lost to SD 38-27

NFL Notes: Atlanta is the only remaining undefeated team in the league.

Homer: So, what do you think of Atlanta’s obnoxious decision to kick a field goal with 12 seconds left on the clock and a 29 point lead?….Rocco on a car phone from Inglewood, you’re up

Rocco: Lame Homer, that kick was lame. The Atlanta coach should be ashamed of himself. They had a four score lead, what difference does a field goal make?

Homer: Not much Rocco. He went for the field goal to try to embarrass Keister. What a jerk.

Rocco: (static)

Homer: Rocco……….…Rocco………..…looks like your car phone cut out…………………Big Chief, you’re on the air.

Big Chief: You guys are such whiners. The big bad Falcons were mean to us. They tried to run up the score. Give me a break.

Homer: Hold on, Chief. You’re trying to tell me that attempting that kick wasn’t obnoxious?

BC: Not really. If LA hadn’t called timeout on the third down play, the clock would have run out and we wouldn’t be discussing this. Personally, I think the Falcons have evry right to try to run the score as high as possible.

Homer: Of course they have the right, but was it bad sportsmanship.

BC: Probably. But let’s turn it around. If the Diablos were leading Kansas City by 20 points and Keister had a chance to rub it in, you better believe he would do it. And I bet none of you “fans” would complain.

Los Angeles Diablos (1-5) at San Diego (4-2) – Vegas Line SD by 15.5

Injured Starters
Wesley Alexander, T - Hip Pointer, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Kenneth Weber, DE - Dislocated Knee, full strength in 3-5 Weeks – out

Los Angeles gets the ball first and goes absolutely nowhere. Gustafon has a terrible punt and the Chargeres get great field position, starting near midfield. The Diablo defense holds San Diego to a field goal and they are down 3-0.

In the second quarter, the Chargers had a nice drive stopped when DE Mark Bruce sacked the QB and caused a fumble inside the LA red zone. The Diablos did not capitalize. Later in the quarter, the Chargers added another field goal to take a 6-0. On the last drive of the half, Tsoi and the Diablos looked very sharp and moved down the field with ease. Time was not on their side however and they were forced to kick a field goal as the clock went to zeroes. Halftime score San Diego 6 LA3.

The Chargers come out strong and get another field goal to open the quarter. LA starts out shaky going 3 and out, but a roughing the kicker call keeps the drive alive….The Diablos do not take advantage of the situation and once again go without a score.

In the middle of fourth, Tsoi begins his best drive of the day getting to the SD 20. Of course, he throws an interception which leads to yet another Charger field goal with 2:54 left. LA has one more chance, but Tsoi forced the ball again and throws his third pic of the day. That’s three games in a row that have slipped away. Final score SD 12 LA 3

Good News: Good defense, they did not give up a td. O-line did not give up a sack. Tsoi’s completion percentage was over 70% as he went 24 for 34, getting 188 yards.

Bad News: Justin Tsoi’s 3 interceptions. The running game is rather anemic as Vince Luck led the way with only 43 yards.

League Notes: KC gets their first win sneaking past Denver 13-10. Chicago lot big to Green Bay to go to 0-7.

Standings: SD (5-2), SEA (4-2), OAK (3-3), DEN (2-4), LA & KC (1-6)

SplitPersonality, owner of the LA Diablos is rumored to be very disappointed in the job that Coach Jack Keister is doing with his football team. The team has a career record of 1-23.Many seem to think that this upcoming game against Kansas City will determine whether Keister will return to the team next season. SplitP could not be reached for comment.

After Week 7

I am Johnny “the Homer” Free and this is the Coach Keister show. So coach, you are at 1-6 and the team is really struggling offensively. What do you think the problem is?

Coach Keister: I don’t like to dwell on the negative Homer. I think the team has done a decent job these last few games, especially the defense. We have held teams to under 20 points which is something we really struggled with last year. We have cut down the number of sacks allowed and our kicking game is much improved. Kicker Roosevelt Forbes has missed just one kick all year.

Homer: That is all true, but you have to admit that Tsoi has been a train wreck lately.

Keister: He has been playing poorly of late, but I wouldn’t cll him a train wreck Homer.

Homer: Really? He has thrown 10 interceptions on the season and is personally responsible for 7 turnovers in the last two games. He has some of the worst hands I’ve seen in a quarterback. He fumbles way too much.

Keister: He is young Homer. This is his first season in the NFL.

Homer: Then why aren’t you playing Stokes? He has experience.

Keister: Even though young Jason is is a minor slump…

Homer: Minor slump?

Keister:….he is still a better quarterback than Sammie Stokes. I have every confidence that he will improve as the season goes on.

Homer: I hope so….let’s take a few calls…….The Captain from Venice Beach, you’re up.

Captain: Hey Coach. Just how long are you going to stick with this rookie? He really stinks.

Keister: Justin Tsoi is a fine young quarterback. He is a rookie that will improve in time.

Captian: So you won’t make a chang?

Keister: Unless his play deteriorates significantly, I will not be making a change.

Homer: Thanks Captain…..hmmm…are resident Kansas City fan is on the line…Big Chief, you are up.

BC: Hey Coach. I’ve noticed that most of these LA “fans” are concentrating on how poorly young Mr. Tsoi is doing. What I want to know is…how long are you going to keep those running backs of yours. Those guys can run themselves out of a wet paper bag. They are awful.

Keister: Admittedly they are not doing well, but I not going to blame any player or group of players for our poor record. Some of this is brought on by the schedule. We just finished playing 5 games on the road in a row. I think the NFL should review its scheduling practices and make a few changes.

BC: So it’s the schedule’s fault that you guys are 1-6?

Keister: The schedule is not the sole reason we are not doing well, but it is a contributor.

BC: Sound like a load of…..

Homer: Well, we are out of time. See you next week.

Thanks for the support Shorty. This dynasty is kind of fun to write.
As for Tsoi vs. Stokes – stay tuned. I think the team is more concerned than they are letting on.

Wesley Alexander, T - Hip Pointer, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Kenneth Weber, DE - Dislocated Knee, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Dwight Farr, C - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play

63,000 plus showed up to see to 1-6 teams battle it out for last place in the AFC West.

LA wins the toss and elects to receive. The ball is kicked near the goal line and is returned to the LA17 by RB Heath Truitt. The Diablos offensive woes continue as they only get 3 yards on their opening drive.

KC begins their initial push at their own 14. QB Dunlap hand off to Anders but is stopped by linebacker Fred Huntley three yards behind the line of scrimmage. The Chiefs try another running play, but it too takes them back 3 yards. They change things up with a nice pass from Dunlap to Shehee for 18 yards and a fresh set of downs. They take to the ground and are pushed back again for another 3 yards. Two plays later Dunlap hits Lockett for 15 and a first down. The Chiefs try another running play and they are stopped behind the line for the fourth consecutive time. Hunter made the tackle and……fumble!
But KC recovers it on the KC35. Over the next six plays, Dunlap completes passes for 10 or more yards and KC gets to the LA29. Their running game finally gets it in gear as Ellard breaks away and gets to the end zone. KC 7 LA 0

LA has the ball for all of 80 seconds before they have to punt it away again. KC gets the ball back. The Chiefs drive stalls as Ellard has another run for –3 and they are called for holding. They kick a short punt and LA gets great field position on the KC 42. On third and 5, Tsoi gets sacked and LA is forced to punt. Kansas City RB Anders runs for –3 and Dunlap completes a pass to RB Ellard for 22 yards to end the quarter.

Kansas City continues to waltz toward the goal, but the LA defense stiffens up forcing the Chiefs to kick a field goal. Score: KC 10 LA 0. At the 10-minute mark of the second, LA ‘s offensive production consists of 5 total yards; 2 rushing and 3 passing.

Late in the second quarter, LA has a drive that starts at the LA20. Tsoi and company get to the KC 40. Justin Tsoi throws a long 30-yard pass, but it is picked off by Kansas City. The score at the half is KC 10 LA 0. LA has only 48 yards of total offense.

On LA’s first play of the half, Tsoi is sacked for 6 yards. Coach Keister has Roosevely Shannon run a reverse, but no one is fooled. He only gets four yards. A reverse? They eventually have to punt.
Late in the third, Tsoi is sacked and the ball comes loose. KC gets the ball on the 29 yard line and eventually scores another touchdown. Score is now 17-0.

The next LA drive was more of the same. Tsoi was sacked twice and Gustafson punted yet again. The Chiefs fumbled near midfield with 10:20 to go, but LA squandered the opportunity again.
The most interesting part of the game came in LA’s last drive. Justin Tsoi went out with an injury with 44 seconds left. Sammie Stokes came in and was immediately sacked. With 29 seconds left, Stokes threw a 23 yards pass to Maurice Harding who ran out of bounds. With 8 seconds left, Stokes threw a long bomb to Vince Luck who caught it on the 6 yard line. He was tackled by Dishman and time expired. Final score: KC 17 LA 0

Good News: Sammie Stokes made a statement going 2 for 2 and 66 yards. They only had 3 penalties for 25 yards. KC on the other hand had 16 penalties for 106 yards.

Bad News: Justin Tsoi 8 for 19 for 51 yards and 2 interceptions. Time of possession – 20:26. Offensive line gave up 7 sacks. LA had 28 yards rushing. Team went 1 for 10 in KRB’s. Despite tackling runners behind the line of scrimmage on 10 occasions, LA gave up 280 yards rushing.

Offensive Player of the Week: Jay Ellard, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
Jay Ellard, KCY, RB - 24 carries for 169 yards, 1 TDs.

League Notes: Atlanta remains perfect at 7-0.

From LA Diablos page on the Football Universe Website

Midseason Report

The LA Diablos have held their opponent to less than 20 points in the last three games. However, they have scored a total of 25 points during their entire 5 game road trip.

The Bad News: Rookie quarterback Justin Tsoi has been a disappointment going 123 of 216 for 1143 yards. He has just 3 td’s against 12 interceptions and a QBR of 53. Running back Heath Truitt is also struggling with 153 yards on 53 attempts for a 2.8 avg and no touchdowns. G Riddick Levine and T Ted Anthony are also having very bad years. They have given up 8 and 7 sacks apiece.

The Good News: Second year player Fred Huntley is having a very good year. He leads the league in tackles with 71 and has 19 assists. He is on pace to break the league record of 134 tackles in a season. DE Mark Bruce is also having a decent year with 6 sacks. Kicker Roosevelt “Money” Forbes has not had much of an opportunity to show off his talent, but has gone 5 of 6 in field goals on the season. Center Dwight Farr leads the team in KRB’s with 11.

Overall impressions: This team is actually fairly good on defense which on most teams would be enough to win a few games. However, the offense is so atrocious that this is not the case for the Diablos.

Word out of the Diablos organization is that Sammie Stokes will start at quarterback next week. Officially, Stokes is starting because of Justin’s Tsoi’s bruised shoulder. However, insiders say that Stokes can keep the job for the rest of the season if he throws a few td passes and wins a few games.

Week 10

Los Angeles Diablos (1-7) vs Denver Broncos (4-4) – Vegas Line DEN by 10

Injured Starters
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Kenneth Weber, DE - Dislocated Knee, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – out
Dwight Farr, C - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 3-5 Weeks – out
Justin Tsoi, QB - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play backup

LA won the toss and elected to receive. Heat Truitt took the kick from the 10 and ran it back 29 yards. Stokes’ first pass a starter is a good one as he connected with Mitch Bush for 11 yards. Too bad that was his best play of the game. Stokes’ very next pass was also completed, but Denver’s Eric Brown was the receiver. Oops. Luckily Denver’s drive stalled.

After LA went three and out, Denver began a long drive that was riddled with penalties. Despite that, the Broncos marched into the LA red zone. The Diablo defense came through stopping WR Norbert Yager on the 1 yard line. They kicked a field goal to move ahead 3-0. The LA offense remained dismal even with the change at QB. The Diablos have just 1 yard rushing and 22 yards passing through one quarter

The Broncos added another field goal in the second quarter and LA’s offense continued to fail. With 10 minutes left in the quarter, QB Gus Frerotte was sacked by DeFelice and Harrison and the ball came loose. LA had a great chance from the DEN20, but they moved the ball backward 8 yards before settling for a Roosevelt Forbes field goal.

Denver’s turnover woes continued on the next drive as Frerotte threw an interception to safety Terry Livesay. LA started on the DEN22 and again did not get it in the endzone. Forbes kick went up….and….missed wide right.

The Diablo defense came up big again, stopping the Broncos in the red zone. Denver kicked one more field goal to take a 9-3 into halftime. LA’s offense has produced just 26 yards of total offense.

In the third, Denver’s drive ends just out of field goal range, but LA was called offsides. The Broncos take advantage of their second chance and the 48-yard kick sailed through. Denver tacked on a late fourth quarter touchdown and the final score was DEN 19 & LA3.

Good News: The red zone defense was very good, holding the Broncos to just one touchdown in four tries. Safety Terry Livesay got two interceptions.

Bad News: LA was limited to just 6 first downs and the time of possession was only 18:41. The offensive line went 0 for 10 in KRB’s..

League Notes: Atlanta remained undefeated and Chicago is still winless.

Standings: SD & DEN (5-4), OAK & SEA (4-5), KC (3-6), LA (1-8)

Los Angeles Diablos (1-8) vs Carolina Panthers (4-5) – Vegas Line CAR by 8

Injured Starters
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Kenneth Weber, DE - Dislocated Knee, full strength in 0-2 Weeks - out
Mark Rangel, DT - Deep Thigh Bruise, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play
Robbie Coronado, CB - Concussion, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Vince Luck, RB - Hyperextended Knee, full strength in 3-5 Weeks – will not start
Mitch Bush, WR - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play
Dwight Farr, C - Sprained Ankle, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play
Scottie Disney, LB - Stretched Knee Ligament, full strength in 2-3 Months - out
Justin Tsoi, QB - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks - backup

Diablos Stadium has a capacity of 66,700. Only 33,000 showed up for today’s game. If fans don’t start showing up, LA could lose its third team in 20 years.

The Panthers have the first possession, but the Diablos defense forces them to go three and out. After a bad punt, Sammie Stokes and company begin the drive in good field position; the LA42. Stokes hits Harding for 30 yards to get things started. Defensive holding on Carolina moves the ball five more yards, and Sammie follows up with a 23 yard strike to Watkins for a td. The Diablos have a 7-0 early in the game.

The teams trade possessions until LA tacks on another 3 via field goal. In the middle of the second, Carolina goes three and out and gives LA great field position again near midfield. LA charges down to the CAR 29 before thay are stopped. Forbes kick is up….and misses wide right. Doesn’t seem to affect the momentum at all as the Panthers fail to move the ball once again. LA drives down the length of the field and scores another td just before halftime. The offense is clicking today as LA has 12 first downs and a 17-0 lead.

The action slows down until late in the fourth when Carolina turns it over on downs on their own 24. The Diablos actually capitalize on the situation and score an insurance touchdown. LA up 24-0 with less than 4 minutes to play.

Carolina QB Jeff Lewis does not give up, and connects with Deion Armendariz (great name) for a 47 yard pass to keep the game interesting. After a 4 yard running play, the two hook up again for 37 yard bomb and a touchdown. Rookie Buddy Handwerker (another great name) runs the ball in for the conversion and the score is now 24-8. Carolina’s final push is too little, too late and a banged-up Diablos team wins their first game with Slammin’ Sammie at the helm.

Good News: Sammie Stokes (17 of 28 for 197 yards & 1 td) did not have a stellar game, but did not make any mistakes. He had the benefit of a running game as Truitt ran for 56 yards. The run defense was simply amazing holding Biakabutuka to 12 yards on 11 carries. Game MVP Fred Huntley had 11 tackles and a half of sack. DE Mark Bruce had the other half + 1 in another good outing. After several bad games, the banged up o-line turned in a good performance with 7 KRB’s including 3 from backup center Scott O’Pope.

Bad News:....................(crickets chirping)……………….

League Notes: Chicago loses (0-10) & Atlanta wins (10-0)

Standings: SD & DEN (6-4), OAK (5-5), SEA (4-6), KC (3-7), LA (2-8)

The Diablos organization is in turmoil this week trying to decide which of its two quarterbacks gets the next start. Justin Tsoi, the rookie has not won since week three and has been very shaky in recent weeks. He bruised his shoulder and has been replaced by Sammie Stokes the past two games. In last weeks game, the three year veteran, moved the offense down the field and did not throw an interception.

In our opinion, it really doesn’t matter who they choose. Both players are substandard QB’s and would not be starting on any other team.

After Week 11

Homer: The big question of the week is, of course, Justin Tsoi or Sammie Stokes? Who gets the start against the Raiders next Sunday? ………………Hammerhead, you are on the air.

HH: I vote for Stokes, Homer.

Homer: Tell me why.

HH: He played well last week, and the team should ride the hot hand.

Homer: Perhaps. What about his performance against Denver.

HH: He was rusty; he hadn’t started a game since last year. Give the guy a break.

Homer: Don’t get defensive, I just wanted your opinion…………….next up…..Holly Frank, you’re on the air.

HF: They better keep Stokes as quarterback. That Tsoi kid is a bum.

Homer: I thought you hated Stokes, Frank. You complained about him all last year..

HF: I hate Stokes, but that rookie has more turnovers than a pastry shop.

Homer: Um Frank.

HF: Yeah.

Homer: Very lame. Leave to comedy to Leno and Letterman………..let’s see…..Bazooka Joe, which QB should start?

BJ: The rookie! You should never lose your starting job due to an injury. It’s like an unwritten rule in sports.

Homer: I don’t think the injury is the only reason they benched Tsoi. He really didn’t play well in many of those first eight games.

BJ: Doesn’t matter. His shoulder was sore. Maybe it was giving him problems earlier in the season and the docs didn’t catch it.

Homer: Could be, but I honestly think that a change would have come injury or not……next up………Niccolo, you have the final word.

Nic: This is a no-brainer Homer. Tsoi should be the starter next week.

Homer: Why is that.

Nic: If Tsoi wins, the organization looks good because they give a rookie a chance to shine and are grooming a future star. If Tsoi plays badly, Stokes gets his job back, and the team doesn’t have a player lose a job to injury. He would lose it to bad play. More importantly, bad play equals losses, and losses equals a better draft pick for next year.

Homer: Hmmmm. I get it. They look like the good guy while losing an extra game or two.

Nic: Exactly.

Homer: That’s pretty devious.

Nic: I know.

A crowd of 36,000 diehard fans braved the cold, wind and rain to see the Diablos take on the Raiders. The weather was a factor on the very first play fronm scrimmage. Rich Gannon threw an interception to Terry Livesay who ran it back 21 yards down to the OAK2. On the very next play, Heath Truitt ran for a loss of one, fumbled and ball went right back to Oakland. The Raiders drive down to midfield before they are forced to punt.

LA is not afraid to go back to Truitt and he runs several times to move near midfield.. Unfortunately Tsoi fumbles and Oakland runs it back to the LA38. This set up a Raider field goal and they lead 3-0. LA has a nice drive that stalls just outside of field goal range. Oakland’s next drive leads to another field goal and the score is 6-0.

In the middle of LA’s next drive, Coach Keister went for it on fourth down while on the wrong side of the field. Heath Truitt ran off tackle for three yards and the drive continued. Gutsy call but it worked. This led to a field goal by Forbes. With 39 seconds left in the half, Truitt fumbled on the LA15. Oakland quickly kicked the field goal to make it 9-3 at the half.

In the third quarter Rich Gannon threw a ball right into the arms of rookie safety C.J. Pifott. The Diablos could not move the ball and had to settle for another field goal. In the fourth quarter, LA punted rookie Jason Lusk who fumbled the ball on the 10. Again, te Diablos offense could not move the ball, and Forbes kicked the game-tying field goal. The score is 9-9 with 5:22 left.

Oakland’s next drive was aided by LA penalties and defensive lapses. Richie Newman ran it in from the 3 yard line with just 1:15 left on the clock. LA’s last chance drive began on the 1 and Tsoi and the gang finally got the offense moving, but they ran out of time. Final score: OAK 16 LA 9.

Game MVP: L A 31 C.J. Pifott
C.J. Pifott, L A, S - 8 tackles, 6 assists, 0.0 sacks, 1 interceptions.

Good News: The defense was great in the red zone. Tsoi did not throw an interception and Roosevelt Forbes was 3 for 3 in field goals.

Bad News: The team had 3 fumbles, all of them turnovers. Heath Truitt was shut down in the second half and had many runs for negative yardage. He finished up with 12 yards on 11 carries. Tsoi had a mediocre day going 14 of 28 for 95 yards.

League Notes: ATL won again to improve to 11-0. Chicago lost 56-6 to a very mediocre BUF team. They are now 0-11.

Standings: SD (7-4), DEN & OAK (6-5), SEA & KC (4-7), LA (2-9)

Week 13

Wesley Alexander, T - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks - out
B.J. Emerson, T - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 0-2 Weeks

Scottie Disney, LB - Stretched Knee Ligament, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Fred Huntley, LB - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – will play

Despite the injuries and the 2-9 record, the gamblers in Vegas give the Diablos a very good chance of winning the game. The coaching staff decided to go with Stokes at quarterback after Tsoi’s lackluster performance against the Raiders.

The Chargers won the toss and elected to receive. The Diablos injury luck continued as WR Roosevelt Shannon went down hard on the opening kickoff. Luckily, San Diego’s drive went nowhere. On LA’s first possession, Sammie Stokes moves the ball well, but they stall and kick field goal. San Diego quarterback Jeff Blake threw an interception on the next drive which set up another kick from Forbes. The ball sailed threw right down the middle and LA had a 6-0 lead.

San Diego scores a quick field goal to get back within 3. On the Charger’s next drive, LA gave up two huge running plays including a 37 yard run by Robert Chancey. They move ahead 10-6. With time running out in the half, LA stormed back with Slammin’ Sammy hitting Watkins with a perfect 41 yard strike to get into the Chargers red zone. On the very next plat Stokes lofted to ball to the endzone but it was picked off. Tough break. San Diego was content to let the clock run down to halftime.

LA opened the second half flat and quickly went three and out. Momentum has defiantly shifted towrd San Diego as they quickly march down the field and get another rushing td. LA goes 3 and out again, but the Charges muff the punt return and Marty Mills recovers the ball on the SD31. Unfortunately, Watkins was injured on the play. Stokes is running out of people to throw the ball to.

Again, LA cannot move the ball, and Roosevelt Forbes attempts a 50-yard kick. The kick is up…….it’s straight……..but just short of the crossbar. The kick is accurate, but just doesn’t have the distance. Late in the third, the Diablos claw back to within 4 as Stokes hits the #5 receiver Al Delgado for 17 yards and a td.

Neither team does much and time is running out for LA. With just 2:28 left in the game, they make one more big push for the endzone. Fourth and one on the SD 45 with 1:21 to go. Stokes lofts the ball up toward Roosevelt Shannon, Dumas of the Charges deflected it. Damn. The Diablos get the ball back with 33 seconds left on their own 18. Stokes was sacked and fumbled the ball. San Diego recovered, and takes a knee to end the game. Tough loss. SD 17 LA 13.

Good News: Heath Truitt has decent game; 16 carries for 72 yards. Stokes was decent as well going 25 for 41 with 242 yards, 1 td and 1 pic. The defense had 4 sacks including 2.5 from backup DT Brent Reese. Disgruntled guard Winfred Burgess filled in for the injured Levine and went 3 for 7 in KRBs. The team had 10 KRB and 0 sacks allowed. LB Fred Huntley leads the league with 107 tackles. He has gone over the century mark in just 12 games.

Bad News: Offense cannot seem to get a score when they really need it.

Standings: SD (8-4), DEN 7 OAK (6-6), SEA & KC (5-7), LA (2-10)

Week 14

Los Angeles Diablos (2-10) at Oakland Raiders (6-6) – Vegas Line OAK by 9

Injured Starters
Roosevelt Shannon, WR - Sprained Neck, full strength in time for the playoffs - out
Riddick Levine, G - Broken Foot, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Wesley Alexander, T - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Ted Anthony, T - Torn Biceps Muscle, full strength in 2004 - out
Mark Bruce, DE - Bruised Ribcage, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Vince Luck, RB - Hyperextended Knee, full strength in time for the playoffs - out
Norbert Saperstein, DE - Sprained Neck, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out
Scottie Disney, LB - Stretched Knee Ligament, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out

Both team started out slowly until Stammie Stokes threw an interception in the middle of the first quarter. Oakland took it in for a td on the next play. Score 7-0. On LA’s next possession, they marched down to the very edge of Forbes’ range. He missed the 50-yarder.

In the second quarter, Oakland missed a field goal on their first possession, but hit another touchdown on their second. LA went three and out, punted, but the ball was returned back 54 yards to the LA3. Oakland scored again and the Diablos were in a 21-0 hole.

In the third, LA’s comeback attempt started well with a drive accented with Oakland penalties. The Diablos took advantage of the Raider miscues and got 7 back. On the next drive, James Hennessee ran for an 80 yard touchdown and LA closed to within a touchdown. A bad Oakland punt led to great field position on the OAK43. Unfortunately, LA ran out of gas and went 3 and out.

In the fourth, LA drove all the way to the 10, but stalled and kicked a field goal to bring the score to 21-17 with 12:41 to go. This would be the greatest comeback in LA’a young franchise history. Oakland had other ideas. The Raiders drove 80 yards down the field and ate up 10 precious minutes off the clock. They scored the backbreaker td with just 2:06 remaining on the clock. LA could not move the back and watched helplessly as the Raiders ran out the clock. Final Score: OAK 28 LA 17.

Good News: Despite several injuries to strarters, LA is competitive once again. However, they failed to get the big play to put them over the top.

Bad News: Stokes had a very mediocre day going 17 for 37 for just 137 yards, 1 td and 2 pics.

Team Notes: The coaching staff has decided to start Tsoi for the rest of the season.

Week 15

Los Angeles Diablos (2-11) vs San Francisco 49ers (4-9) – Vegas Line SF by 6

Injured Starters
Roosevelt Shannon, WR - Sprained Neck, full strength in time for the playoffs - out
Riddick Levine, G - Broken Foot, full strength in 0-2 Weeks - out
Wesley Alexander, T - Bruised Shoulder, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – out
Ted Anthony, T - Torn Biceps Muscle, full strength in 2004 - out
Vince Luck, RB - Hyperextended Knee, full strength in 3-5 Weeks – limited play
Norbert Saperstein, DE - Sprained Neck, full strength in 0-2 Weeks – out
Scottie Disney, LB - Stretched Knee Ligament, full strength in 3-5 Weeks - out

The Diablos open with the ball and like so many times this season, they do nothing with it. The 49ers strike quickly and score a field goal. LA again cannot move the ball and punt. San Francisco drives down and scores a td. SF10 LA 0.

In the second quarter, LA finally gets into Frisco territory but are forced to kick a long field goal try. Forbes missed the 50-yard kick. Why does the coaching staff insist on having the kid try long kicks? Most of his misses have been from 50 yards or beyond.
Score still 10-0 at the half

Both offenses slow in the second half and nothing of note happens until the fourth. LA begins a nice drive from their own 20, and end up kicking a short field goal to pull within a td. On the next drive, Tsoi moves the ball down the field quickly and Forbes kicks another field goal with 5:33 left. Score is 10-6.

The Diablo defense disappears on Frisco’s next possession and they get a very quick td to take the lead back to 11. LA will not give up and manage to get a td of their own. With 3 seconds left and no timeouts, the banged up Diablos need a miracle.

They don’t get it and the game ends SF 17 LA 14.

Good News: Tsoi has a good game (21 for 34, 238 yards and 1 td)

Bad News: There is no running game. 26 yards on 10 carries) The defense does not record a sack and Marty Mills had two sacks allowed. Also, there was only 1KRB for the entire game.

Standings: OAK & SD (8-6), SEA (7-7), KC & DEN (6-8), LA (2-12)

League Notes: CHI finally won beating TB 23-9

Riddick Levine, G - Broken Foot, full strength in 0-2 Weeks - out
Ted Anthony, T - Torn Biceps Muscle, full strength in 2004 - out

C.J. Pifott, S - Bruised Sternum, full strength in 3-5 Weeks – out

A heavily injured Diablo’s team traveled to Baltimore to face Tony Banks and the Ravens.

Baltimore won the toss and immediately uses the run to cross into Diablo territory. The drive ends when Tony Banks throws an interception right to Robbie Coronado who ran it back 45 yards. LA starts the drive on the BAL39, but they settle for a field goal and lead 3-0. On the next LA drive, quarterback Justin Tsoi has to leave the game with an injury. Sammie Stokes comes in to replace him.

In the second quarter, the Ravens get a 51-yard kick to sail through the uprights and the game is tied at 3. Stokes and company go nowhere and punt. Baltimore marched down to the LA10, but the defense holds and the Ravens kick another field goal. On LA’s next possession, Stokes threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. At the half, the score was 13-3 and LA had been held to only 41 yards of total offense.

In the fourth quarter, Sammie Stokes had a complete breakdown, throwing 3 interceptions in a six minute period. He did throw a very late td pass, but it was much to late. This game was dominated by the Ravens and they scored 10 more points on route to a 23-10 victory.

Good News: Fred Huntley set the single season tackle record with 135. He gets to add to the record next week against the Seahawks.

Bad News: The line on Sammie Stokes
Passing Att	Comp	Yards	Yd/Att	Long	TD	Int
7 Stokes 28 12 97 3.4 26 1 4

Also. The o-line gave up 5 sacks and had just 1krb. The Diablos only had 14 yards rushing

Standings: OAK, SD & SEA (8-7), DEN (7-8), KC (6-9), LA (2-13)

League Notes: CHI has 2 a game winning streak. Beat NYJ 18-16

Going into the playoffs, Atlanta was the clear favorite. New Orleans upset them 20-17 in the divisional round. The Saints were in turn upset by Washington.

The Superbowl was a typical blowout as the Patriots crushed the Redskins 44-19.

2003 Scorecard

Quarterbacks: The Diablos were saddled with miserable play from the QB position. Tsoi and Stokes combined for just 8 td’s against 22 interceptions, virtually the same production as last year. Since neither player stood out, the QB controversy will continue into 2004.
Schmoe’s Grade: F

Running Game: Heath Truitt and James Hennessee both had 400+ yards. They combined for 5 td’s and 8 fumbles. Hennessee’s 4.0 avg is very misleading since he got 80 of his yards in one play in the last game of the season. Vince Luck played through an injury and had only 84 yards for the season.
Schmoe’s Grade: D

Receivers: Mitch Bush led a decent corps of receivers with 625 yards. Hopefully his hands improve as he had 12 drops.
Schmoe’s Grade: B-

O-Line: The centers Dwight Farr and his understudy Scott O’Pope were the only quality players on this horrible offensive line. This group gave up 53 sacks and did a poor job of blocking.
Schmoe’s Grade: D

Kicking Game: Preston Gustafson will probably never win any awards for his kicking ability, but does an adequate job for the Diablos. Kicker Roosevelt Forbes was a huge improvement over last year’s kicker. He went 17 for 24 and was perfect in PATs. He does not have a great leg (best kick 49 yards), but rarely misses from inside of 50.
Schmoe’s Grade: C

Defensive Ends/Tackles: DE Mark Bruce led the team again with 8.5 in only 14 games. Backup DT Brent Reese did well again getting 4.5 sacks in limited playing time. The rest of the players were average.
Schmoe’s Grade: C

Linebackers: Fred Huntley has become one of the best middle linebackers in the NFL. He broke the league record for tackles in a season with 143, and was third in TPct at 19.1. He needs to work on his pass rush as he recorded just a half a sack. Kyle Hunter and Scottie Disney also posted solid years, although Disney’s was cut short due to injury.
Schmoe’s Grade: B

Secondary: Safety Terry Livesay greatly improved and caught 6 interceptions on the year to lead the team. His PDQ of 41.4 was among the league leaders. The rest of the secondary was average at best. This group showed some improvement, but still has a long way to go.
Schmoe’s Grade: D+
