Mount Rushmore - Female movie characters
Okay, most of you already know the rules...
Exactly four entries for the Mount Rushmore of this category. No four plus a list, no honorable mentions, no sneakiness. Four. You decide what qualifies and what to submit. And you can't comment on other people's submissions until you have submitted your four. And if you want to defend your choice(s), do so after you have submitted your four entries. This category - female movie characters. Not actresses, characters. Not characters who earned greatness in other media and then appears in film as well -- they should qualify here based on their movie presence, period. Enjoy. |

Clarification request -- does this exclude characters from film adapations of novels entirely? Or only restrict using their non-film elements as justification for inclusion?

It's okay to include a character who was also in a book or elsewhere... but don't submit someone like, say, Joan of Arc because of her fame from other sources, unless she merits it solely based on her portrayal in one or more movies.

Hmmm... we tossed around several of the names here, but completely forgot about Norma Desmond. Dang. I think our Sister Maria slot might be up for grabs once she reads this thread, though. I don't see how you can have this list without Scartett and Dorothy, though, even if you're prone to emphasizing more recent films.

To me, Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind are important films just as much for the historical significance of their production (if not more) than they are for the individual characters. For that reason, including Scarlett & Dorothy on the list would be akin to selecting the best player on the best team for MVP, in my opinion. I don't necessarily agree with that concept.

Three legit contenders in Scarlett O'Hara, Dorothy and Sugar Kane Kowalczyck (Some Like it Hot) go along with the object of my youthful desires: Cindy Mancini (Can't Buy Me Love).

this list so far seems to indicate we have some weak female roles overall when you get two real answers and then all these periphery entries.
Clarice? Erin Brokavick? Those are the best female characters ever? I don't have the answer, more of an observation I guess.

I would have completely agreed with your list if One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest and the good nurse hadn't helped scare people from psychiatric hospitals so much. I had a 14 year old that I had to hospitalize freaking out the other day because she didn't believe me that psychiatric hospitals aren't any thing like that movie. I was so impressed that she had actually seen the movie, that I almost reconsidered my decision |

Linda Lovelace was a real person not a character. Cleopatra should be disqualified a la Quiksand's Joan of Arc rule. I don't know who Doroth is though.

Linda Lovelace is credited with playing herself in Deep Throat, which is the role I was thinking of. It was probably mostly a case of being in the right place at the right time, but the Lovelace and the movie had a huge impact on American culture. When I was trying to come up with famous roles, Cleopatra was one of the first ones that came to mind. But thinking it over, a poor choice; more famous for the media circus around Elizabeth Taylor then anything else. (I wish I would have thought of Nurse Ratchet)

That's precisely why I put Ratched on my list: her character was damned scary. I'd even go so far as to say she's one of the best villains in cinema history. The cold, heartless "helper" in a position of power over mentally ill/impaired individuals who desperately rely upon her - what could be worse? It is certainly true that the movie didn't help the public perception of inpatient mental health care (which, in the mid 70's, wasn't too terribly great anyway). But I believe it is a testament to the greatness of the character that she still influences the way folks perceive mental health care 30 years on (rightly or wrongly). |
