windows update causes illegal dll problem?

ran windows update for home xp and this warning came up on restart.

From what I can gather this is my "Realtek Sound Effect Manager". Before this if I plugged in headphones a realtek panel came up with different options. This no longer happens and I can't load from the menu. I do still have sound though when playing video or games (good thing or I'd be pissed).

Went to the realtek site but I'm not really sure where to look for a dll to fix this or even if I found it, where and how do I install it on my system?

I did try to google this but nothing really stuck out as a possible solution to this technically challenged computer user.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

The problem is with the HHCTRL.OCX file, which is a file that most likely contains one or more control widgets for the realtek panel. I'd suggest contacting their technical support to complain about it; even if it's not their stuff that's causing the problem, they ought to know how to fix it.

Thanks for the reply. Emailed their tech support, we'll see how long it takes them to answer.

dola

My wife just called me to the kitchen. Seems she just ran the update on her laptop and got the same popup warning. Maybe someone at Realtek will be working tonight
