Trapped in the Closet returns!

On August 13 (next Monday, punks!), R. Kelly's "pop culture phenomenon" Trapped in the Closet returns with ten more chapters. Starting Monday, IFC.com will premiere one new chapter each day. I had never seen or heard Trapped in the Closet until early this week. I'd heard of it, but goodness, I had no idea what I was missing. Last night, I watched the first twelve chapters, and I couldn't stop laughing.

This is just an alert for anyone who's interested in seeing more of the story. How will James react to the news about Bridget's baby? Will Twan get himself sent back to prison? How does James know about Rufus and Chuck? Is Big Man going to change his pants?

I'm excited!

Edit to add: The first twelve chapters are all available online at http://www.ifc.com/trapped, so here's your chance to refresh your memory or get started with the story!

The thing was starting to lose steam for me around chapter 6 or 7 when they were in Sylvester's house, but it redeemed itself with the surprise in Bridget's cabinet at the end of chapter 9.

Somewhere within the next 10 chapters, Sylvester is going have about 400 guns pointed at his head, and there's a helicopter chase. That's right, bitches! A damn helicopter chase!

MONDAY MONDAY MONDAY the excitement continues!

Edit: "Now pause the movie 'cause what I'm about to tell y'all is so damn twisted! Not only is there a man in the cabinet, but the man is a..."

Yeah, that's just it. I mean, you can read about the ridiculous shit that happens, but when you actually see it, it's even funnier than you can imagine. Here's a two-minute recap of the whole story. The recap doesn't really show the funniest parts of the story, but the recap itself is hilarious.

Linked due to NSFW language. I almost didn't get through the whole two minutes because I was laughing so hard.

Roxanne and Tina. I don't think their names come up until chapter 11, but I have a feeling that they'll be playing a big part in the rest of this story. I think Twan's gonna hook up with both of 'em.

What's sad is that I didn't even know they went to 12. I had seen the first 5 and thought that was all there was. Shows how up to date I am on these things.

Yes, but they don't actually appear anywhere in the first 12 chapters. I think they will be seen somewhere within the next 10, though.

I haven't seen 14 yet. I didn't even get around to 13 until 11pm. I'm going to watch 14 on my lunch break, because if I load it up right now, I'm sure that everyone in the office is going to run over to see if I need resuscitation.

17 was horrible. And I know all of it is schlock genius, but 17 was like 1:30 long, and didn't really resolve anything. I was thinking my boy Twan was gonna get a tina/roxanne sandwich, but that got shot down. At least there was one kind of funny moment where Kelly's like "Y'all lucky I enjoy that shit" when referring to the girls who like each other.

Ah, I haven't even seen 17 yet, but I figured that we were pretty much due for a chapter or two that doesn't do much. I'll probably just wait until after midnight and watch 17 and 18 together.

R Kelly speaks at 'Trapped In The Closet' screening
Quote:

Troubled star appears upbeat at New York cinema

16.Aug.07 6:52pm
A buoyant R Kelly. appeared at a screening of new chapters of his "hip-hopera" 'Trapped In The Closet' last night at a West Village cinema in New York.

Kelly, wearing diamond encrusted sunglasses showed up 40 minutes late for his appearance and introduced chapters 13-22 of his infamous soap-opera-musical style production.

"Don't nobody ask me no questions I don't know how to explain how I wrote it" the singer laughed "I'm tired of people asking me that because I can not explain this. I can explain any other song but I cant explain 'Trapped In The Closet'."

Kelly went on to explain "It's an alien, People ask me why is it an alien and I say it's come down to show us new genres and new ways to produce movies, magic, song and dialogue which have all been put together, and has never been done as far as I'm concerned. I call that alien. And people ask me when 'Trapped In The Closet' is going to end and I say when the aliens decide to leave."

He also revealed that when he first approached his record label and producers about the project, they were unconvinced and compared the experience to building the first airplane.

"When I first did it, the first chapter, they were looking at me like I was crazy, you know like the man that explained how was first going to build the airplane? They were looking at him like he was crazy I'm sure!"

Following his speech Kelly took a seat in the back row of the theatre and (having removed his sunglasses) watched the entire set of chapters in the company of his burly security.
I expected nothing less.

I watched the final episode early this morning. All in all, the first 5 episodes were pretty craptastic, and I mean that as a compliment. But then once they involved the pimp, the singing televangelist, and the old people again, it just sucked. Not that the whole thing didn't suck, but the last 5 didn't have the "it's so bad it's good" type feel.

Spoiler

R. Kelly Brings Back 'Trapped In The Closet' Series - The Huffington Post

NEW YORK — Get ready for more drama from Sylvester, Twan and Pimp Lucius – R. Kelly is delivering more chapters of "Trapped in the Closet."
The outrageous musical series started off as five videos for the R&B singer's dramatic cliffhanger songs in 2007. It quickly became a cult classic, and he added more chapters, put the accompanying videos on a DVD and also teamed up with IFC to premiere the series. It grew to 22 chapters.
For the next chapters, Kelly is teaming up with IFC again. He said in a statement Wednesday: "The Alien is back and It has brought friends along."
"When I first began experiencing the unknown journey of writing `Trapped in the Closet,' I knew after the first chapter that I had tapped into something that was not of this earth," he said. "'Trapped in the Closet' fans put on your seatbelts `cause `Trapped in the Closet' is coming to take you away."
Ann Carli, the producer of "Trapped," said filming for the new chapters will begin in Chicago in the spring and be out by the fall, along with new characters.
"You'll see pretty much most of the main characters back, and you'll find out pretty early on what the package is, and whose got the package," said Carli, referring to the cliffhanger of the last chapter.
Carli said in a phone interview Wednesday that the series almost didn't get made. When Kelly presented his 16-minute "Trapped" song to his Jive record company at the time, the label didn't know what to do with it, Carli said.
She pushed to make a series of videos like a movie to accompany it, and the song and the videos became a sensation.
But despite its success, more chapters almost didn't happen. It wasn't until an interview when Kelly said that money was the holdup to producing more installments that offers flooded in to produce them, Carli said.
"I got calls from all over the world," she said.
IFC said "Trapped" gave the network its biggest online audience ever. A DVD of the new chapters should be released by the holidays, Carli said.
Meanwhile, Kelly is to release his new album, "Write Me Back," in the summer. His memoir, "Soulacoaster:*The Diary of Me," is due out in June.
Carli said the new album is a sequel of sorts to his Grammy-nominated "Love Letter."

Totally excited. The dudes on Grantland did a pretty solid podcast on it today.
