XM Satellite Radio.. Anyone Have One?

I'd recommend you save your money and not spend it on something that is available to you for free.

Satellite radio is evil. If it ever catches on, people like me will be out of work. Then I couldn't afford internet access, and wouldn't be able to post on the board.

So Myles, if this is just your way of trying to get me off the board, just tell me.

And stay far away from satellite radio.

If satellite radio allows people to get better access to the information they want in an economical way, and you are unable to adapt to this new system, personal reasons aside, why should you be kept around?

Being in radio also, I tend to agree with this, however, broadcast radio will never die for the same reason broadcast TV didn't die; people will always want a little local flavor. Maybe not all the time, but enough that there always will be local stations. Not to mention, it would take a HUGE percentage of the population being signed up for this to ever happen and, seeing as how there are still a large number of people without cable TV, I don't think it could happen for, at minimum, twenty years or so.

That's true... and there's one other thing the satellite folks are forgetting about. People (for the most part) view radio differently than TV. I forget who did the poll, I think it was USA Today, and they asked, what are the 5 things you could not live without. They then compiled the list into the Top 100.

Radio wasn't on the list. If people don't like what's on the radio, then they'll put in a cd or a tape. Considering a market like Oklahoma City has 27 radio stations, you might be getting 3 times the number of stations on satellite radio, but you're not going to be getting much more diversity. Satellite radio is going to have to go after the mainstream audience if they want to succeed, and the only way to do that is to offer the mainstream in a different manner (a la no commercials). Well, they've already screwed the pooch there.

The final reason I think satellite radio will fail: You hear advertisements for it on commercial radio stations. If the commercial stations thought it was truly competition, they wouldn't take the dollars. It sounds facetious, but it's true. 98.7 can't buy advertising on 104.3, because it's bad for 104.3. The same principle holds true here.

So enjoy your satellite radio, Myles. Who knows, one day it might be a collectors item... like an 8 track deck.

Hey, my apologies Cam.. Definitely didn't mean to "ruffle any feathers" there my friend... (I'm sure you know that)..

My dilemma is I am not able to pick up a FM Talk Station in Orlando that I like, and that station also no longer streams online..

I found out that a couple of syndicated programs that originate from that station, that I enjoy, are available on XM.

The main problem is that this station is no longer streaming live or taped audio online.. Heck, I'd pay a monthly fee for it (as I do for The Phil Hendrie Show.. Great Stuff), if they would offer that, but I don't see that happening..

What can I say, I enjoy listening.. I'll take a solid Radio Program over watching the tube anyday..

I've been tempted about the idea myself, now that the prices are starting to drop. I still don't think I'm ready to plunk down $10 for a subscription, but I can see it happening on day.

You don't have to worry, Cam. The people who should be worried are those morning zoo crew radio shock jocks who feel that what the audience really wants to hear are commercials and that oh-so-witty-banter, but they don't want to hear a FREAKIN' SONG! Local news, sports and talk radio will be fine -- it's your Mix 102 or The Planet 104 or Crap Lite 98 that will be trolling for dimes on the street corner.

Of course, if satellite radio can't figure out how to get a few more million subscribers, they are screwed.

Well, I have XM Satalite radio. Great Product. Have the "Car Kit". ESPNRADIO makes it worth it alone. I don't have any local ESPNRADIO channels around here so its all new to me. Makes your commute to work a breeze

I purchased the Delphi Skyfi for home last month after finding a promotional deal. $99 for everything. The monthly fee isn't that bad for what you get -- lots of stuff unavailabe locally. Will be getting the car kit soon.

The Delphi can swap out between house/car, so I recommend it. They also make a boombox device for it.

XM is recommended over Sirius at this point.
