Show Off Your Website
I've been working really had on updating my website and getting it to something I'm happy to call my place on the web. I know I'm not the only one that likes doing this type of stuff, so maybe we can share links and discuss things about our sites here.
I'll start. Site: http://www.dangarion.com Name: Powered by Dan Host: Dreamhost Backend software: Wordpress and various plugins Purpose: It's mainly a personal blog, I had been keeping one on Livejournal for about 8 years and for the last year I had been mirroring my posts from my personal site to Live Journal, now I just post here. I also post local restaurant reviews and some movies reviews from time to time. Tell me what you think, give me some suggestions, criticism, kudos, whatever, and I will do the same for you.

I just now found out that 1&1 discontinued support for FrontPage Extensions in their Linux hosting package, effective Feb. 28th. My site was built with FrontPage, using extensions for the photo galleries, navigation, and feedback. I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board and redo a lot of stuff using Dreamweaver. Most of it is still working, but some parts clearly are not.

Mine's in my sig - a blog about the Colorado Avalanche. I'm running on Wordpress as well and am hosted on Bluehost. When I started in August of 06 I didn't know much about blogging software. I remember asking Ron (vtbub) what to use and he pointed me towards WP. I'm glad I asked.
Bluehost, on the other hand, I'm a little iffier on. A friend of mine is on Bluehost as well and needed some help for some issue he was having with his site (a WOW guild site). They helped him out and sent him on his merry way...and then he discovered that the guy helping him had added a webhosting link to the forum. While my friend was able to get it removed, it was a rather tacky thing for them to do.

I'm just getting into this stuff. My home page is not much: http://www.gstelmack.com, although I've got an actual RSS feed (and still learning more about it).
I'm doing all the ASP.NET stuff for the WOOF web site at http://www.gstelmack.com/woof_test, but Antmeister has done all the cool CMS front-end stuff for it and SkyDog has been keeping vBulletin going. My latest adventure is a foray into political activism, setting up the WakeSchoolFacts site at http://www.wakeschoolfacts.org to start collecting articles and information about the horrendous social engineering policies our local school board is undertaking (constantly shuffling kids around to different schools under the guise of "growth" and "diversity" when they are really after Title I funds and averaging out test scores). On the Web front, I'm trying to give it a more polished feel without resorting to tons of graphics.

Nice websites guys.
DD, I didn't realize Wordpress was still around. Way back, way back in 98-99 I would guess, I used wordpress for some simple things but it was all very basic and I don't think I could make something look as nice as yours does way back then. But good job. |

It became a memorial site to my daughter almost 3 years ago - not much there, most significant being a link to my blog... |

I blog at http://codebaboon.blogspot.com, ostensibly about development but more often than not just about random stuff.
I'm on the fence on where to go with it, I don't feel I have many unique dev viewpoints, and I have a lot more fun posting the random junk, but if it gets too out of hand then the blog becomes sort of pointless. Then again, I don't think anyone reads it anyways, so I may as well just post what I feel like

Ok, I've got a question for all of you. Which blog host is the best?
I have signed up for 2 (Blogger, then Wordpress, then back to Blogger for a minute) But I have issues with both of them! Wordpress will not let me customize nearly anything. Blogger give me access to only one page, the blog posting page. Atleast with wordpress I had additional links ("pages") at the top to play around with. Also, while blogger is more customizable, it is hardly. All I can edit is the color of my background, the font sizes and colors. And if I want to do anything else, I need to learn hardcore coding. Any easier sites? Or any "assistant" freeware out there that lets me do it easily and then I can just copy the code into one of the sites? I used to do that with FP 98. Thanks dogs. Trying to get into the blogging game. |

Just download them, unzip them, and then upload them to the WP-content/plugins/ folder, sometimes they go straight in there and sometimes the folder for the plugin goes there. Then you activate it.

I'm actually not very familiar with the free wordpress.com version... Looking at it real quick, it appears you can't do plugins with Wordpress.com, you would need your own host for that. Now you do have a number of themes to choose from though, under presentations. |

If you wanted to edit the themes they have on the wordpress.com site for yours it looks like you'd have to pay. If you wanted total control, like I have with mine, you'd want to get a host. |

yeah, I think this is the way it works. fwiw, it's pretty cheap to get your own host and installation of WP is easy (even easier if the host uses cpanel / fantastico). fwiw, the theme I'm using is a free theme (http://iamww.com/downloads/) slightly modified with help from Cuervo and Simms. There are zillions of great themes and plugins out there for WP.

Yeah there are some really great themes out there and some that are dogs. I really like the ones that Small Potato did at http://www.wpdesigner.com/. I'm using one of his themes that I've edited up myself to fit my needs. Good stuff. |

nice new look (or new to me anyway). btw, for the record, Brian and I came up with our respective domain names independently (and around the same time, IIRC).

Interesting...yet the banner shows the field from the first baseline. When I found out that my wife was pregnant I figured I'd setup a webserver at home, learn a little Linux, and keep my family and friends up to speed on the baby business. That was nearly 3 years ago and it is still up and running. I don't update it nearly as often as I'd like to but I don't generally have the time to do so...but, I suppose I should make the time. It's running on WordPress and Gallery2. Nothing fancy but I have been meaning to do some work on both the site and the box it's sitting on. I've had intentions of virtualizing it but that hasn't happened yet...lazy ass that I am. thelookers.ca Last edited by johnnyshaka : 04-04-2008 at 11:25 AM. |

I wrote this one a couple years ago now. I need to add more content but for the time being its a basic intro into who I and my family are.
