Nebraska Blizzards 2023: The Heart of Darkness

Dynasty Overview

The purpose of the Nebraska Blizzards Dynasty is to tell a compelling and intriguing story using FOF2 as the backdrop.

The Story So Far (Updated 3/19/03!!!)

It all began in January 2000. That year, Anthony Coriolanus, President and CEO of AgroGlobal Corporation, and a man known only as "The Executioner" agreed to a join forces in a business venture expected to generate billions of dollars. Using Coriolanus’ connections with the National Football League Commissioner’s Office, the two men set out to purchase an expansion franchise to generate large amounts of cash separate and apart from their own personal income. Then, using Executioner’s connections to the infamous Mexican Zopepe Drug Cartel, the money made by the team would be invested into drug trafficking to generate incredible profits. Since they decided that the team’s name would be the Nebraska Blizzards, it seemed appropriate that their criminal venture should be code-named Operation Snow Blind.

Their plan began with Coriolanus bribing NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and other league executives to obtain enough votes to win the bid for an expansion franchise in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Executioner, meanwhile, assassinated the most prominent competitors for the expansion franchise team, as well as those opposed to construction of the Blizzards’ stadium.

After Coriolanus was awarded the NFL's latest expansion franchise, he set out to hire the best General Manager in the league—Jack “Grid” Iron. Since Grid was under contract with the San Diego Chargers, Coriolanus framed Iron by paying a notorious bookie, Heather Diamond, to accuse the GM of gambling on NFL games. After Iron was fired by the Chargers due to the criminal charges, Coriolanus befriended him, and even paid for his lawyer throughout the ensuing jury trial. Iron was later acquitted after Diamond surprised prosecutors by testifying that she made up the accusations only to gain notoriety. Since Coriolanus had supported Grid Iron throughout the entire ordeal, Iron’s decision to be the Blizzards’ GM was an easy one.

After securing the franchise, stadium and general manager, Coriolanus and the Executioner began investing the team’s profits into the drug trade. Over several years, Coriolanus donated millions of dollars generated by the Blizzards to sham charities in South America and Mexico. These charities then laundered the money by transferring it to the cartel, where it was used to fund the drug smuggling operations. The drug profits were then deposited into several off-shore bank accounts, set up by the Executioner.

The enterprise was wildly successful, as both men made over one billion dollars within 10 years. Coriolanus was content to bask in the glory of his vast, new wealth. The Executioner, however, had different plans for his share of the profits.

Working with CIA Director Archie Bitzer, also known as “Silencer,” the Executioner used the money earned from the cartel’s drug activities to genetically engineer a virus that would kill anyone of Arab ancestry. In 2015, the virus was released into a small village in Saudi Arabia, and it spread quickly across the entire region, gaining its nickname, the “Arabian Flu.” By the end of 2016, it had reached every country in the Middle East and killed over 500,000 people. By 2017, the disease appeared for the first time in the United States when a businessman from Yemen died shortly after arriving in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2018, the first case in the continental U.S. occurred when a Saudi immigrant, who had not been to the Middle East in several years, died in a Bronx, New York, hospital.

In 2019, Bitzer urged the Executioner to begin what is known only as “Phase 2,” which involved distributing a vaccine for the Arabian Flu. The Executioner refused, telling Bitzer that he could not provide him a vaccine because none existed - he had lied about it merely to secure Bitzer’s help. Wracked with guilt, Bitzer later took his own life. FBI Agent Alex Goldstein, however, discovered the Executioner’s plot while reviewing Bitzer’s computer files.

Also in 2019, the countries of Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Saudi Arabia began deploying large numbers of troops and missiles (suspected of carrying chemical weapons) to their borders with Israel, which they blamed for the disease. In response, Israel detonated a tactical nuclear device in an uninhabited area to deter any military attack by the Arabs.

The escalating violence in the Middle East convinced Goldstein to suggest to his superiors that the U.S. take responsibility for its role in creating the virus. The President of the United States ordered a cover-up of the incident. Goldstein, however, saved the computer records and planned to go public with the information.

Unfortunately, the National Security Agency caught wind of Goldstein’s plan and had him arrested to face charges of treason before a military tribunal. He is currently being held at a secret military base outside of the continental United States.

As for Coriolanus, he fled the U.S. in 2014 following an attempt on his life by one of the Executioner’s assassins and his indictment for drug trafficking. He re-appeared in 2016, however, in Germany. Holed up with a large cache of firearms in a small apartment in suburban Hamburg, Coriolanus told Interpol authorities that he killed his own wife and children mercifully because he feared that they would have suffered horrific and painful deaths if the Executioner got to them first. After several hours of negotiation, Coriolanus agreed to surrender and the authorities all about Operation Snow Blind. Unfortunately, as Coriolanus walked out of the apartment and towards the waiting police, he was shot and killed by an unknown assassin.

To date, the Arabian Flu has killed over three million people. Further, the Executioner’s purpose in creating the virus and releasing it upon the Middle East is currently unknown.

In addition, over the last decade several South Pacific villages, and all of their inhabitants, have been completely destroyed by missiles from Russian Mako helicopters. The Russian government has denied any involvement. The CIA believes that several Mako helicopters that vanished on a training mission in 2003 in Siberia were actually stolen by the squadron commander, Vladimir Maritczak, and his men. A worldwide search has begun for Maritczak, who was an outspoken Ukrainian and considered to be sympathetic toward the United States and NATO. Any connection between the Mako helicopters and Operation Snow Blind, if there is one, is unknown at this time.

On December 31, 2019, NORAD detected the launch of 35 missiles from various Arab nations directed at Israel. Shortly thereafter, Israel launched a counter-strike of 65 rockets, which satellites showed to be armed with nuclear warheads. The capitals of Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria are among the cities targeted.

In 2020, the world learned of the horrifying destruction across the Middle East from the Arab-Israeli missile attacks. Millions died and cities were left in ruin. The U.N. sent peacekeepers to the area to maintain stability, but they weren't enough. U.N. Secretary General Jean-Paul Petain was removed from office when the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Jamir Al Sabah, called for his impeachment after his father was killed by a suicide bomber. Al Sabah, the newly crowned King of Kuwait, was elected to replace Petain, and has vowed to increase the U.N.'s military presence in the Middle East to eradicate the many terrorist groups attempting to seize power in the shattered land.

Also in 2020, Grid Iron received a cryptic e-mail from someone purporting to be Anthony Coriolanus. Coriolanus was believed to have been killed by an assassin in 2016 before he could reveal the secret of Operation Snow Blind to the authorities.

In 2021, Grid Iron learned that the e-mail was really an automated message written by Coriolanus several years ago before his death. Coriolanus instructed Grid Iron to access the AgroGlobal computer system in Kuala Lumpur for information that would unveil a horrifying conspiracy. In Kuala Lumpur, Coriolanus left a message for Grid saying the information had to be copied to a keychain hard drive and that it would be slipped to him by a guest at Le Petit Zinc, a restaurant in Paris, on New Year's Eve 2022.

Also in 2021, Anthony Angelino gave up his stake in the Melbourne, Florida, Eagles to become the majority owner of the Nebraska Blizzards. The President of New York-based BuildCo Enterprises, Angelino announced shortly after buying the team that he would move it unless the public paid for a new $1 billion stadium.

At the close of 2021, King Jamir Al Sabah of Kuwait announced that doctors in his country discovered a cure for the Arabian Flu and would begin distributing it immediately.

In 2022, the U.S. government provided U.N. peacekeepers in the Middle East with 1,000 new F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, the most advanced military plane in the world. The planes were provided at the request of King Sabah, who pointed out the need to deter terrorist cells and rival governments from interfering with the rebuilding process.

Also in 2022, Grid Iron obtained the hard drive Anthony Coriolanus left for him in Paris. In it, Coriolanus included information from AgroGlobal's computer databse which described a secret research facility in Paraguay. According to the disk, the place was created by the U.S. government to circumvent the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention of 1975 and was responsible for creating the Arabian Flu. The disk also stated that it was the CIA that released the virus in the Middle East. The facility is hidden in the jungle and has gone undetected by local law enforcement for decades. Coriolanus did, however, give Grid Iron the GPS coordinates.

House Rules (Updated 3/5/03!)

I employ a fairly standard set of "house rules" (empty cupboard, no franchise tag, must maintain a 53-man roster, no renegotiating, can't make trade proposals, trades must pass "fairness test", no current NFL players, auto-sign rookies). During the 20-step free agent period, I may negotiate with any player who was on my team the previous season without restriction. As for free agents who did not play on my team the previous season, I may sign up to three of them during the 20-step process, but I may only bid on one player at a time and I cannot modify my original offer. After the 20-step free agency period, I can only sign undrafted rookie free agents and players who were on my roster the previous season. All contracts signed outside of the 20-step process must be for exactly what the player asks, or for one year. I have decided to allow renegotiating with “classy veterans" who have a loyalty of "high" or above.

2023 Preview

The Blizzards have high expectations in 2023, as the team will be going for a Super Bowl championship three-peat.

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices received a hefty increase after the team’s second consecutive Super Bowl victory. All ticket were raised 15 to 20% across the board, but are still less than the Denver Broncos, Nebraska’s closest competitor with a comparable stadium.

Scouts/Coaches

There were no coach or scout changes for 2023.

Retirements

No Blizzards retired in 2023.

Free Agency

The Blizzards went into the free agency period $57.9 million under the $211.3 million salary cap.

Key Players Re-Signed

  • QB Moran Sweeney, the 2023 Super Bowl MVP, decided to stay with the Blizzards after signing a $180 million, five-year contract that included a $30 million bonus. Moran, Nebraska’s first round pick (4th overall) in 2017 out of Southwest Louisiana, is now the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.
  • S Charles Mangum, Nebraska’s first round pick (12th overall) in 2014, renegotiated his current contract which was set to expire at the end of 2023. Mangum will now make $16.0 mill over three years, and save the team approximately $2 million in cap room.

Key Players Lost

The big contract to Moran Sweeney sent shockwaves through the team as four starters were allowed the leave via free agency due to limited cap space.

  • G Wendell Crumpton signed a four-year $34.1 million contract with the Carolina Panthers.
  • T Gary Gearhart signed a four-year $42.64 million contract with the Tennessee Titans.
  • K Sam Brewer, Nebraska’s third-round pick out of Tennessee in 2017, signed a two-year $3.57 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Despite helping the Blizzards to three Super Bowls, Brewer’s accuracy had been diminishing over the last few seasons.
  • CB Karon Kohler signed a three-year $40.43 contract with the Green Bay Packers. Although Kohler is extremely talented, the team considered him expendable due to the emergence of CB Everett Blackwood, who won All-League First Team honors last season as the team’s third cornerback last year.

Key Players Gained

Nebraska did not have enough money to sign any impact players.

Amateur Draft

GM Grid Iron chose to solidify the defensive line by selecting 5’11” 243-pound DE Phillip Phipps out of NE Louisiana with the Blizzards’ first round pick (36th overall). Here are the rest of Nebraska’s draft selections:

Rnd 1 - Phillip Phipps, DE, Northeast Louisiana
Rnd 2 - Willie Norris, DE, Grambling
Rnd 3 - Eugene Rhodes, K, South Dakota State
Rnd 4 - Hardy Jefferson, G, Wisconsin
Rnd 5 - Mark Francis, CB, Purdue
Rnd 6 - Xavier Toledo, LB, Michigan State
Rnd 7 - Colin Osborne, CB, California

Training Camp/Exhibition Season

The exhibition season began with Grid Iron cutting DT Leland Berry, Nebraska’s second-round pick out of Louisiana State in 2017, to save $12 million in cap room. “Leland is the consummate professional,” said Iron. “But we needed to sign 53 guys.” Berry later signed a one-year $1.6 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys.

Although the Blizzards finished the preseason 0-4, including a 20-13 loss to Omaha, rookie DE Phillip Phipps won the starting job after recording four sacks in four games.

Schedule

The Blizzards’ schedule is going to be tough, despite the fact that only six games are against teams that made the playoffs last year, as Nebraska plays five of its first six games on the road. This season also marks the first time in franchise history that the Blizzards will play their in-state rivals, the Omaha Raptors, in a regular season game. In two preseason games against the Raptors, the Blizzards are 0-2.

WIRETAP AUTHORIZATION

1. Based on the application of Detective Michael Phillips, this court finds probable cause to believe Chu Nguyen has committed violations of Nebraska Law 28-416 (Sales of Controlled Substances);

2. This court further finds that all investigative techniques short of a wiretap have been exhausted, and that monitoring telephone communications is the only other reasonable alternative;

3. Therefore, the Lincoln Police Department is authorized to monitor and record all telephonic communications made by Chu Nguyen until further order of this court; and

4. Moreover, the existence of this wiretap authorization shall not be released to the public until further order of this court.

Week 4: Blizzards (3-0) at Chargers (0-3)

Nebraska LB Kyle Schwartz had 27 solo tackles to shatter the NFL single-game record as the Blizzards turned a three-point halftime lead into a 24-7 blowout over the Chargers.

1/4 Season Review

At 4-0, Nebraska is alone in first place with a one-game lead on Seattle (3-1) and Denver (3-1). The Kansas City Chiefs (2-2) are two games back.

LB Kyle Schwartz is having an incredible year, leading the league with 64 solo tackles through just four games. QB Moran Sweeney (694 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT) is third in the league with a 96.6 quarterback rating. Moran’s brother, Jerome Sweeney, is third in the league with 396 rushing yards.

The Blizzards’ rookie K Eugene Rhodes is off to a strong start, making all nine of his field goal attempts to far this season. The man he replaced, K Sam Brewer, has made only 8 of 14 for his new team, the San Francisco 49ers.

Week 5: Blizzards (4-0) at Lions (3-1)

RB Jerome Sweeney was named Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 227 yards, which included a 76-yard dash around left end for a touchdown on Nebraska’s second play of the game, as the Blizzards beat the Lions 26-11.

Week 6: OPEN

The bye week was productive as all of Nebraska’s starters rested their injuries and everyone is expected to be ready for the Blizzards’ next game.

Week 7: Blizzards (5-0) at Broncos (3-3)

Rookie K Eugene Rhodes ran his consecutive field goal streak to 17 and won Player of the Game honors by hitting all four of his attempts in the Blizzards’ 27-7 victory over the Broncos.

Blizzards RB Jerome Sweeney rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns in Nebraska’s 47-20 victory over San Diego.

FB Tom Carlisle, the Blizzards second-round pick in 2020 out Southern Illinois, was named Player of the game after recording 44 rushing yards, 34 receiving yards, a touchdown catch, two tackles on special teams, and three key run blocks. He also converted twice on fourth-and-one.

Week 9: Blizzards (7-0) vs. Broncos (4-4)

The Nebraska defense had four sacks, an interception and allowed just 128 total yards as the Blizzards swept the season series against the Broncos with a 27-3 victory.

K Eugene Rhodes missed the first field goal of his career, a 51-yarder that went wide right.

1/2 Season Review

At 8-0, Nebraska is alone in first place with a two-game lead for the best record in the league. The team is 3.5 games ahead of Kansas City (5-4), and four games ahead of Seattle (4-4) and Oakland (4-4), in the division race. In addition, Nebraska has the highest Power Rating in the league at 86.

Nebraska has several statistical standouts through the first half of the season. First and foremost, LB Kyle Schwartz leads the league with 92 solo tackles. QB Moran Sweeney (1,387 yards, 8 TD, 2 INT) is fifth in the league with a 90.6 quarterback rating. His brother, RB Jerome Sweeney, leads the league with 914 rushing yards and is third with eight touchdowns. Rookie K Eugene Rhodes is easily the best kicker in the league so far, making 19 of his 20 field goal attempts. CB Everett Blackwood, who stepped into a starting role this year, has three interceptions and a touchdown.

Incredibly, the Blizzards have no current injuries, so the team will be well armed against its opponents going into the final eight games.

Sadly, starting QB Moran Sweeney suffered a broken wrist in the first quarter and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. Backup QB Luther Sheen struggled, completing just 9 of 16 for 86 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Blizzards can clinch the AFC West with a victory over the Raiders next week.

Week 13: Blizzards (10-1) at Raiders (6-5)

Nebraska RB Jerome Sweeney won Player of the Week honors after rushing for 169 yards and two touchdowns as the Blizzards clinched the AFC West with a 34-17 victory over the Raiders.

3/4 Season Review

At 11-1, the Blizzards have clinched the AFC West and have a one-game lead over the New York Jets (10-2) for the best record in the NFL.

RB Jerome Sweeney leads the league with 1,355 rushing yards and is second with 14 touchdowns. LB Kyle Schwartz continues to dominate, leading the NFL with 130 solo tackles through 12 games.

The Blizzards look to finish strong, playing three of their final four games at home against teams without winning records.

I can get you where you need to go, no questions asked. I know the area like the back of my hand, since I spent years in the Paraguay jungles training rebels for the CIA.

I charge $1500 per day, and you pay all expenses, which includes ammo (the jungle is a dangerous place). In all, I think it will cost $10,000, but it could be more.

Send me a confirmatory e-mail and we'll set up a date and time.

Week 14: Blizzards (11-1) vs. Vikings (6-6)

Blizzards RB Jerome Sweeney rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns as Nebraska triumphed 38-20 over Minnesota.

Week 15: Blizzards (12-1) vs. Bills (3-10)

Nebraska RB Jerome Sweeney rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns as the Blizzards crushed the Bills 38-23.

QB Luther Sheen, playing for the injured QB Moran Sweeney had the best game of his career, completing 21 of 43 for 226 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

FB Tom Carlisle was having another All-League year, tore a thumb ligament and will miss the rest of the season. He was on a pace to set new career highs in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and key run blocks.

With a victory next week, Nebraska can clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Week 16: Blizzards (13-1) vs. Chiefs (8-6)

Nebraska RB Jerome Sweeney was the hero once again, rushing for 110 yards and three touchdowns in the Blizzards 30-2 victory over the Chiefs. Sweeney finished the day just 14 rushing yards short of breaking his career high.

With the win, Nebraska (14-1) clinched home field throughout the playoffs.

Week 17: Blizzards (14-1) at Raptors (4-11)

CB Everett Blackwood won Defensive Player of the Week honors with two interceptions and RB Jerome Sweeney rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown as the Blizzards pulled out a 20-17 overtime victory against their in-state rivals, the Omaha Raptors. It was the first regular season meeting between the two teams since Omaha entered the league in 2020.

Full Season Review

The Blizzards finished the season at 15-1, clinching the best record in the NFL. Not surprisingly, the team also finished the year with the highest Power Rating in the league at 90 points. Nebraska had the league’s top defense (15.8 pts/game) and second-best offense (28.4 pts/game).

RB Jerome Sweeney broke his own single-season AFC record for rushing touchdowns with 23. The previous record, which Jerome set in 2020, was 22. Former Dallas Cowboys running back still holds the all-time record with 25. Sweeney also led the league with 1,935 rushing yards.

LB Kyle Schwartz, the Blizzards’ fourth-round pick in 2016 out of Michigan State, anchored the Nebraska defense with a league-leading 148 solo tackles. His 167 total tackles were second only to his former Blizzards teammate LB Tevita Worthington of the Green Bay Packers, who finished the year with 172.

The Blizzards’ success in 2023 was due in large part to extraordinary contributions by several rookies. First-round pick DE Phillip Phipps out of Northeast Louisiana had a great rookie season by leading the team with 11.0 sacks. Third-round draft pick K Eugene Rhodes out of South Dakota State made 31 of his 34 field goal attempts to earn the league’s best success rate at 91-percent. Rookie WR Jesse Roby, signed as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana, led the league with three touchdowns on punt returns.

Nebraska knocks Greenville out of the playoffs again

December 14, 2023

Lincoln, Nebraska (Ticker) – The Nebraska Blizzards are going back to the AFC Championship for the third straight year after a 20-7 victory over the Greenville Bobcats. Nebraska RB Jerome Sweeney led the offense, rushing for 159 yards and two touchdowns, as the Blizzards beat the Bobcats in the postseason for the third straight year.

“We’ve had a great string of success against them in the playoffs,” said C Julio Moore who led his team with 4 key run blocks and recovered a fumbled Greenville punt to set up Jerome Sweeney’s first touchdown of the day. “This win was for The Boss,” Moore added, referring to the team’s General Manager who is currently in a coma at a local Lincoln hospital.

The game began with a stalemate as the teams battled for field position. With 3:40 left in the first quarter, however, the Bobcats punt return specialist fumbled at his own 42-yard line and Moore recovered, taking the ball to the Greenville 33. Five plays later, Jerome Sweeney ran six yards off left tackle for a touchdown to give Nebraska a 7-0 lead. On the abbreviated drive, Sweeney rushed four times for 29 yards.

After Greenville punted to start the second quarter, Nebraska went on a 73-yard, 6:09 drive that ended with another six-yard touchdown run by Sweeney to give his team a 14-0 lead at halftime.

The Bobcats came out firing all cylinders at the start of the third quarter by going on a 76-yard, 5:11 to make the score 14-7. The Blizzards defense stepped up, however, and forced Greenville to punt on its next three possessions. The Nebraska offense then ran out the clock by controlling the ball for an astonishing 11:27 in the fourth quarter and adding two field goals to clinch the victory.

Hey babe,

I just got into Asuncion and checked into the hotel. My flight was long and boring, but I think my live web cam satellite uplink was broken by the baggage handlers. That's why I'm sending an e-mail. I'm going to try to fix it before my guide shows up in a few days.

Thanks for covering for me honey. I hate to ask you to lie, but it's important that no one knows I came down here. Just keep telling the reporters that I'm still in the coma, and you'll let them know if anything changes. Give the doc a big "thank you" for me too.

I saw at a local sports bar that we won the game! Wow! I wish I could've been there. Can you say three-peat? Keep your fingers crossed. . .

I'll try to call you tommorrow.

Love you,

Grid

Three-peat in the works?

Nebraska heads back to Super Bowl with 27-17 victory

December 21, 2023

Lincoln, Nebraska (Ticker) – Nebraska CB Travis Long had two crucial interceptions to earn Player of the Game honors as the Blizzards clinched their third consecutive AFC title in three years with a 27-17 victory over the New York Jets.

“I was just in the right place at the right time,” said Long, whose two interceptions set up Blizzards scores, and one stopped the Jets deep in Nebraska territory. “It was great to be able have such a great game in front of my whole family,” said Long, who grew up in Lincoln and was the Huskers’ All-American corner in 2016.

The Jets scored first on a 37-yard touchdown pass, but the Blizzards responded immediately, going 80 yards to tie the game at 7-7 on a 13-yard reverse by WR Myron Woodard. Travis Long got the ball right back for Nebraska after an interception at the Jets 41 and K Eugene Rhodes hit a 45-yard field goal to give the home team a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

New York started the second quarter by going 82 yards to take a 14-10 lead. Nebraska came right back by moving the ball to the Jets 2, but RB Jerome Sweeney could only get one yard on fourth-and-two and the Blizzards came away with nothing. Fortunately, Nebraska stopped New York and moved the ball into position so Rhodes could make the score 14-13 at halftime on a 29-yard field goal.

In the third quarter, the Jets pinned the Blizzards at the one-yard line and took possession at the Nebraska 25 after a 39-yard punt and 15-yard return. On the very next play, however, Long got his second interception of the day when he picked off the Jets quarterback in the endzone to save a touchdown. The Nebraska offense didn’t let the opportunity slip away and took the lead 16-14 on a 22-yard field goal by Rhodes. Unfortunately, the Jets responded with a 41-yard field goal to take a 17-16 lead going into the final period.

Nebraska began the fourth quarter with a 61-yard touchdown drive and went up 24-17 after QB Luther Sheen hit WR Vince Clinton for a two-point conversion. After the teams exchanged punts, the Jets were pinned at their own one-yard line and the Nebraska defense held, forcing a punt. The Blizzards took over at the New York 34 with under six minutes to play, but a fumble by second-string RB Donny Woodard gave the ball back to the Jets at their own 42 with just 5:12 in the game. Fortunately, the Nebraska defense stepped up again and forced a punt.

Unable to move the ball, the Blizzards punted to give New York possession at their own 22-yard line with 2:25 left in the game. Leading by a touchdown, the Nebraska defense triumphed yet again as S Jerametrius Midget knocked the ball away on fourth-and-ten to give the ball back to the Blizzards’ offense with just 1:50 remaining. After Luther Sheen took three knees, Rhodes kicked a 42-yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.

Hi Honey,

Whoo hoo! Back to the Super Bowl! What an awesome win! Unfortunately, I won’ be able to make it to next week’s game.

I met with my guide and everything was ready to go, but the deal we had to rent a helicopter fell through and we need to find a new one.

The place I’m going is deep inside thick jungle, so we’re going to land just south of it and hike in, which will take about three days.

I’ll e-mail you soon!

Love,

Grid

Three-peat!

Blizzards win OT thriller 34-31

December 28, 2023

Lincoln, NE (Ticker) – Nebraska RB Jerome Sweeney rushed for 172 yards and K Eugene Rhodes nailed a 34-yard game-winning field goal in overtime as the Blizzards clinched an unprecedented third consecutive NFL Championship by a score of 34-31 over the Melbourne, Florida, Eagles.

“Incredible, truly incredible,” said Jerome Sweeney, who was named Super Bowl MVP. “This win just underscores the drive and determination of this entire team.”

The Blizzards started the scoring late in the first quarter with a 36-yard field goal by Rhodes, but Melbourne responded with a 99-yard touchdown drive to take a 7-3 lead early in the second.

After a Blizzards punt, Eagles star RB Karl Marshall fumbled deep in Melbourne territory and Nebraska seized on the opportunity. Blizzards QB Luther Sheen hit WR Vince Clinton for a nine-yard completion on fourth-and-three, then followed that with a two-yard touchdown pass to TE Kenny Fryar, giving the home team a 10-7 lead.

After the teams exchanged punts, the Blizzards took possession at the Melbourne 47 with 2:15 left in the half. Seven plays later, Sweeney ran eight yards off right guard for his first touchdown of the day, giving the Blizzards a 17-7 lead at halftime.

The Blizzards began the second half where they left off, driving 74 yards for a touchdown, the latest coming on a three-yard pass from Sheen to third-string RB Stan Godwin. Leading 24-7, the Blizzards looked like they had the game under control. Appearances, however, can be deceiving.

On a third-and-17 with 9:24 left in the third quarter, Eagles QB Donny Ridenour completed a 69-yard pass to RB Karl Marshall, who scored one play later on a three-yard run off left tackle to cut Nebraska lead to 24-14. Then, Melbourne CB Doug Grbac returned two consecutive Blizzards punts for touchdowns, and just like that, the Eagles took the lead 28-24 with 14:13 left in the fourth quarter.

With just over eight minutes to play, and Melbourne moving the ball well, it looked as if the Blizzards would need a miracle. They got one. CB Travis Long picked off Ridenour at the Melbourne 46 to set up Jerome Sweeney’s second touchdown of the day, this one coming on a two-yard sprint around left end, to give the home team a 31-28 lead with 3:40 on the clock.

Unfortunately, the Eagles were able to move to the Blizzards 19 in the final 3:23, aided by two crucial Nebraska offsides penalties. Melbourne K Quinn Matich nailed a 36-yard field goal as time expired to tie the game and send the Super Bowl into overtime.

The Blizzards won the toss and elected to receive, but after Nebraska moved to midfield, Luther Sheen was intercepted at the Melbourne 33 and the Eagles returned it to the Blizzards 42. Four plays later, the Eagles were facing a third-and-nine at the Nebraska 12-yard line. Strangely, rather than a short run to set up the potential game-winning field goal, Ridenour decided to throw and Nebraska CB Bryce Joyner picked him off at the 11, keeping his team’s championship hopes alive.

With 1:05 left in overtime, The Blizzards stopped the Eagles on third down at the Melbourne 22. The Eagles punter kicked the ball only 30 yards and Nebraska WR Jesse Roby returned it 18 yards to the Melbourne 34 with 56 seconds left in the game.

Jerome Sweeney ran for two yards to give the team a second-and-eight at the 32, but a false start penalty moved Nebraska back to the 37. Then, Luther Sheen came up big when he hit Vince Clinton for an 18-yard completion to the Melbourne 19 and called a timeout. After a two-yard Sweeney run, Eugene Rhodes took the field with 12 seconds on the clock and hit a 34-yard field goal to win the game.

Honey,

Unbelieveable! Three Super Bowls in a row!!! I can't believe I missed it!

Well, I got the satellite uplink working, but the helicopter just dropped us off and we need to start our hike immediately to get there in three days. So, when we arrive and set up camp, I'll hook up the web cam.

Don't worry about me, my guide is as tough as the come. I'll talk to you on New Year's Eve!

Love,

Grid

Jets' Archie Dunaway wins MVP award

December 29, 2023

New York, NY (Ticker) -- New York Jets RB Archie Dunaway won the NFL's Most Valuable Player award for the second consecutive year, the league announced today. Dunaway, Seattle's first round pick (fourth overall) in 2014 out of Kentucky, ranked sixth with 1,444 rushing yards and second with 17 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 35 passes for 318 yards.

Many believe the award should have gone to Nebraska RB Jerome Sweeney, who led the league in yards from scrimmage (2,001), rushing yards (1,935), and touchdowns scored (23). "Archie's a great player, and he deserves it, no question," said a graceful Sweeney. "He was basically the Jets' whole offense, while I'm just a small part of a great big butt-kicking machine," he added with a laugh.

GRID: Grid Iron, General Manager of the Nebraska Blizzards
MEL: Melinda Iron, Grid’s wife
JACK: Jack Lancer, Grid Iron’s mercenary guide.

* * * * * *

GRID: Happy New Years, honey!

MEL : Happy New Year’s! I love you!

GRID: I love you, too. We finally made it through the jungle!

MEL: What did you find?

GRID : We found the lab, at the exact coordinates I got from the disk!

MEL : Were there any people there?

GRID: No, the place was completely cleaned out a long time ago, judging by the spider webs.

MEL: Ewww! So, are you coming home now?

GRID: Yeah, we’re gonna—hold on a minute. . .

MEL: What is it, hon?

GRID: I hear something. . .

MEL: Any idea what it is?

GRID: It’s helicopters!

[Sound of helicopters in the distance]

MEL: I thought helicopters couldn’t land out there. . .

GRID: They can’t . . . I can see them through the trees . . .

MEL : Be careful!

JACK: Run!!!

GRID: What?!

[Sound of several air-to-surface missiles being fired]

GRID : Holy cr#*p!!!

[Sound of screams]

MEL: Honey, what’s going on?

[Sound of massive explosions]

MEL: Honey, oh my God, honey!

[More explosions]

MEL : Honey? (sobbing) Are you there?

[Sound of static]

MEL: (sobbing) Grid? Honey?

[End of transmission]

Sorry about the cliffhanger.

I'm hoping to start the 2024 season on Monday or Tuesday.

Glad to see people are still interested because I'm really enjoying it!
