Can I run FOF on my Mac with this program?
Here's an interesting situation. I haven't played FOF since I bought my Macbook back in January. I don't have Parallels or a copy of Windows because I don't use Windows programs on a regular basis. That could all change if this program can run FOF on my Mac.
A small Mac developer called CodeWeavers is giving away its flagship program, CrossOver and CrossOver Games, for free tomorrow as part of a "Lame Duck Presidency" promotion. The company promised free software if President Bush accomplished any of a list of predetermined goals before Election Day. One of the goals, to lower the national gas price average below a certain amount, has been met and now the developers are keeping their promise. Politics aside, free software is free software. Ars Technica reports that CrossOver Games uses "a commercial version of the Wine open source Windows compatibility layer." I have no idea what this means. Does this mean I can run FOF on my Mac without Windows?

I hope you guys are successful, but I have a feeling the eLicense stuff is going to bork things up. Keep us posted!

I tried getting an elicense game to work with Wine a few years ago with no luck. Things may have changed with newer versions though.

The free software promotion is now active today only, October 28. If you have a Mac you might as well check this out.

Thanks for this. I've tried Crossover on Linux a few times. This is a good way to get the full version for free.
Looks like the CodeWeavers' site has been slammed with registrations. you have to get your serial number before midnight CST, but you have an additional 48 hours to unlock your copy. |

You can and should download both. I had no trouble downloading both programs late last night (after midnight) and then unlocked the full versions with the registration code they sent me. I understand that they've changed the way they're activating the programs today because they're so swamped but you should be able to at least do what I did and download the trial versions and unlock them sometime this week.

Yes, the Games one, although I'm waiting back on an e-mail to the eLicence people to see if their software will work with this software. My guess is that the eLicense is a dealbreaker but I can still play Morrowind.

The eLicense people told me that I can try to run FOF this way but it is not officially supported. I'll just try to install it and see if it works.

Samifan, I'll be interested to know if it works or not as I'm on a Mac and it's been over a year since I've played FOF.

You may get a second chance. The "Lame Duck" promotion included six different criteria. There's still a realistic chance that another goal of the six, to lower the price of a gallon of milk below a certain price, will be met. You may still be in luck.

I guess CodeWeavers decided to end the promotion yesterday after they gave away over 500,000 free copies of their software. I can't find the original list on their blog anymore but when I read it a few days ago I took it to mean that CodeWeavers would give away free software for a day for each goal that was met. I give them credit for keeping their word on the promotion but I bet it killed their sales goals. In the video below, the CodeWeavers guys react to the promotion:

Yeah, I will probably buy it at some point. I wouldn't even know about it if not for the promotion. It could be a great way to run ANSI programs.

I would wait about a week. If you still haven't heard from them, I'd send them an e-mail. I read on their website that registrations were going to take up to a week so I was surprised when I downloaded and registered in about 15 minutes (this was around 12:30 AM).

I am finding some small bugs in the game and I'm not sure if they've always been there or if I'm encountering them because of the way I'm playing the game. The first bug I found was that most scouts and agents are referred to by their first names only, both on the list of team scouts and on every player agent page. I managed to figure out how to change the starting year to 2008 through the editor since I'm playing with a fictitious universe but am not sure if I can do anything else to offset these small annoyances.

ive been playing around on 2k4 so far, and will do some more testing later.
one time i couldnt type in english. the letter u, for example, gave me an umlaut. but when i closed and re-opened, it typed in english again. also, you cannot move the windows that you open in the game. you just cant drag them anywhere, which is odd however, it doesnt tie up the entire mac, like parallels did, and i didnt have to install all of windows on my computer, so thats a plus... |

Yeah, I'm still experiencing some minor bugs as well. The most annoying bug is the fact that I cannot move the windows in the game. They're not click and drag, for some reason, and so they all pile up on each other if I open too man windows (and I can't close them by clicking on them again, which seems odd). Also, I find that the text on the screen lags sometimes when you open a new window. If the first player on a list is named "Adam Smith" then all players on the list will appear to be named "Adam Smith" momentarily as the new window loads. These are only small annoyances, though, and I'm happy to run FOF on my Mac without Windows.
As an aside, I installed Morrowind this afternoon but haven't be able to launch the game. I sent a support ticket in to the developers and am waiting to hear back from them.

it's likely this program is not going to end up being a solution.
Is it possible though that the game should not be run on crossover games, but rather Crossover Pro? Last edited by Nice Guy Eddie : 10-31-2008 at 09:58 PM. |

I've been running it with Crossover Games. I haven't tried just using Crossover but it might make sense since Games was apparently designed for graphics intensive games like Quake, Team Fortress and the like. If you install FOF using Crossover, please share the results.

What happens when you try to install it with Crossover? Does it think that you're trying to install the game twice on the same computer? I think Crossover and Crossover Games give you plenty of options on where to save the game. Maybe you can use the "manage bottles" utility?
