1986 Offseason Thread

Ready to start things up! Reminder, we're running tonight until the start of free agency (November 2nd I think). We then take off the rest of the week for Thanksgiving, and the next sim will be next Monday.

Woohoo!

I'll count that Sanu in 3rd as a win as well, those Hartford guys pile up insane amount of stats going with a 4 man rotation.

Saturday, November 2nd, 1985: FOOL News: Free Agents File
Front Office Offseason League announced the start of the free agency period today.

Players with expiring contracts began to file as the clock struck midnight and general managers were already making the rounds. With the opening of free agency came a predictable chorus of speculation from the media.

While most teams are likely to make at least some small moves, it's still uncertain who the movers and shakers will be. Reporters expect a lot of attention to be lavished on the cream of the free agent crop, including these players:

1. Allen Miller, 32 year-old reliever
2. George Baker, 34 year-old left fielder
3. Elliott Brown, 31 year-old starting pitcher
4. Artie Wiley, 36 year-old starting pitcher
5. Dany Boily, 25 year-old starting pitcher
6. António Rodríguez, 25 year-old starting pitcher
7. Domingo Sánchez, 32 year-old center fielder
8. Roman Vitaliev, 33 year-old starting pitcher
9. Ed Morgan, 31 year-old right fielder
10. Karl Gates, 32 year-old starting pitcher

Signings can continue throughout the off-season, although most of the high quality players are expected to conclude negotiations long before then. Most players want to be well paid, but they also want to get settled so they can start the process of moving family across town or across the country.

Well, lets get things running. Been long enough of a break. Getting exports now. (I was actually waiting to see if anyone dared ask for more time after having like 5 days to get an export in).

New file is up!

I'll also finally update the HTML tonight now that I am back home.

We are back on the normal schedule, at least for a few weeks again.

If anyone is going to have prolonged absence during the holidays later this month, please drop me a PM to let me know. I'm likely going to have either a really late sim or no sim on Christmas Eve and New Year's eve due to family plans. So I am contemplating a schedule of roughly every other day sims for two weeks (with once or twice a 2 day break between sims, but no super long break like we just had).

Hey folks. Sorry I didn't pop in tonight. Combination of my birthday celebrating and joining a new FOF league pulled me away tonight. Glad to get this thing going again!

I'd love to see what Barrett said no to from me to sign that measly contract with Ann Arbor.

I think Alan said that there was no export from SD.
You may be a victim again of German Engineering.

No, I've been trying to sign him for months during the season with costs well over 10mm per, plus I tried again in the very first export prior to him going FA (you can see all the SD signings in that export)

Barrett was probably a casualty of the changes made several seasons back to make players value themselves higher when negotiating contracts. Barrett is clearly one of the better players in the league and he feels that way as well, so was asking for a lot to re-sign with you.

They are supposed to do the same thing when being offered free agency contracts as well however, but in free agency it is different, after X amount of time, if they only have one offer and it is not too far off the mark, they might jump at it even if it is less then they feel they are worth.

I am suprised Barrett jumped at less money so soon, but my guess is that no one else or very few teams offered him deals so he just took that one.

I'm just about tired of the MLC business in free agency. This time, I offered a guy an MLC so I'd be in the running on the MLC lotto. Instead, he takes a cash option. The same exact type of guy I've offered cash to and he's taken the MLC. I'm to the point to where maybe we need to consider just not allowing MLCs in this free agency period, or maybe ONLY MLCs to guys who request MLCs.

I actually presented something to resolve this issue to the board back a few weeks ago (I thought you were part of that discussion, but it may have been before you were elected to the board). I guess the issue was that people are split between folks that felt the MLC was not enough of a problem to put in yet more manual rules that have to be followed outside of the game.

My proposal was basically no MLC offers to Free agents on the Tuesday night sim (First day of Free agency). If someone wants a player bad enough, they offer at least a major league minimum contract offer to them. Otherwise they wait until FA day 2 (Wednesday night) to offer the MLC.

If enough people feel this is an issue that should be addressed, I can bring it back to the board for re-evaluation this next offseason.

A very good idea....I would totally support this rule.

I'd be for this as well. I don't remember this conversation, but then again, I don't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday either. I'd be all for this option.

No one even made an offer for any of the star players on my list. So the squad is back for another run.
