OT: Political sim?

I know this has been brought up before and I am pretty sure there are no current political sims available. However, I was wondering if such a game or a similar game ever existed and if so, if anybody had any links to it. I'm very interested in a political sim and am hoping that some type of political game was made at some point. Any suggestions?

Thumbs up

I think you're referring to Republic: The Revolution .

The old DOS game Shadow President was really good for it's time. Also there is a Doonesbury Presidental Campaign Sim that was fun as well. I haven't run into any that were made in the past 5 years that were good though.

Underdogs Political Sims

There are numerous political sims. My favorite is Power Politics. You run a campaign as one of many historical figures, or create your own candidate.

Shadow President is fun and has decent depth to it. It just takes forever to play. Each hour of the day takes 1 second, and frequently you will need to play a couple years to reach your objectives(whatever they may be). However it is fun in that you can do things like prevent the Gulf War if you play it right.

There is also Election Day 2.02 and President 2000, both more recent than Doonesbury (which I can't get to work on my computer). There are others I can't recall at the moment.

Election Day 2.02 is freeware but easy to win. President 2002 was way to hard to figure out for my tastes, and looked very formulaic.

Shadow President was fairly cool.

I still remember one game of it I played, where I responded to an airplane bombing by Libya with a full blown invasion. Libya became a province of the U.S. That, and balancing the budget to turn a profit (mainly by drastically cutting foreign aid), gave me one helluva approval rating.

Cuba followed shortly thereafter.

The was one by JoWood - most of their games tend to be cartoonish.
The other recent one I can think of is Superpower - don't know much about it however.

Conflict in the middle east is a good one. Even if it is simple on the surface.

I remember playing Shadow President and actually invading and taking over Iraq. It was hilarious to mouse over Iraq and the country identifier below the map would say "Iraq (U.S.)".

I also played the sequel, "CyberJudas" some.

Both games were fairly good, but I felt they were somewhat unrealistic. Military action guaranteed a boost in popularity. Free trade with any nation was worth several points to your GDP, as was fiddling with the budget so that taxes were generally reduced as was government spending. Then again, it was a computer game.

When I tried to play with the budget in Shadow President, my mouse would never move. I had no control over changing the budget. I just tried to take everything over. Using airstrikes on Syria(or most other Middle Eastern countries) gave an immediate boost to your rating.

If it didnt take forever to play I would still play it.
