OT-What would you name a sports team?
I am interested in conducting some name-the-team contests for each city. Each day or two, I will put out cities all in a state, and I would like to hear your team nickname suggestion, and why.
Today, I'll start with two states, each presenting one city. Birmingham, Alabama Anchorage, Alaska |

Anchorage Snow
Anchorage Eskimos Anchorage Ice (Demons, Warriors, Fighters, etc...) Birmingham Bombers Birmingham Gulf Alabama Slammers Edit to add why: for Anchorage, they all have to do with ice, snow, cold, etc... Bombers for aliteration Gulf because they are near the Gulf of Mex. and it is original Alabama Slammers rhymes (somewhat) and is a name of a drink.

My suggestions...
I always like the Alaska Kodiaks (a Kodiak bear is brown bear inhabiting islands and coastal areas of Alaska and sometimes considered a separate species).
Birmingham is a tough one. |

Alaskan Frontier.. (I also like Kodiak. Good addition Sunny!!)
As for Birmingham or Alabama, hmmmm.... How about the B-ham Thieves, in honor of the city of Birmingham stealing the Orlando Rays Minor League Baseball Franchise (AA - Southern League) from Central Florida. Sounds pretty damn fitting to me..

Fritz, you let me down. When I saw you were the last person who posted here, I thought for sure I would be reading something like:

Whoops, scratch my post above about Birmingham.. It's Montgomery that has stolen Orlando's AA Team that will be moving to Alabama next season..
If we were talking Montgomery, I'd have to go with the Montgomery Boycott or Montgomery Freedom, in honor of Rosa Parks and the infamous Montgomery City Bus Boycott during the Civil Rights Movement.. As for Birmingham, if it were a Football Team, I'd call it the Birmingham a Franchise Here is a Sign of Certain Death for the Entire League, or Death for short, in honor of B-ham's previous failed attempts with teams in the XFL, USFL, and the old WLAF. or, we could just go with the old standby, the Alabama Chain-Gang.. What do ya think?

I agree on Kodiaks for Anchorage.
For Birmingham, I'd say "Inferno". |

Is that for real? Are the Rays moving to Montgomery? Tallahassee came that close to getting them 5 or so years ago, but the county dicked around on the developers' permit to build the stadium, and then Disney built the Braves' complex, and that was the end of that.
I would love minor league baseball in this town. I can't stand college baseball, so even though we've got FSU here, it just ain't the same.

i am still staggered that no team has chosen the nickname "enormous cocks". after all, there is a college team called the "game cocks" so what's the problem?

I think we are waiting for a UK team before we associate cocks with them.

They're the tall, thin cacti with the two arms that branch out and up towards the sky. Pretty much the only place you can find them in the US is in the Arizona area, I believe. I know they don't grow in Texas or New Mexico...

My wife and I actually created a team in NCAA Football 2003... in Greenville, SC. She chose a paw as the logo, and I suggested that the paw looked like a raccoon's. So, she went with Greenville Raccoons. However, we didn't think beforehand about the horrid 'Cocks-like shortening that this name would surely receive in South Carolina... heart of the South.
