FOOL 2034 Offseason Thread
I'm going to try something new (unless I decide after a few weeks that I don't enjoy it), and start announcing a few things during the Wednesday off-day each week. Hopefully to provide conversation topics and to help them stand out separately from the start of the next off-season.
I'll start putting up the previous season's award winners, this year's Hall of Fame inductees as well as try to start up the team by team win shares information each Wednesday time permitting. I have a softball game tonight, so we will see how it goes! |

Dumb question time.... I have always wondered what the commissioners award is exactly? What does it signify? I've wondered for a while but forget to ask.

It is the only award I manually pick each year. I award it to the player in each league who was the most valuable player to their team's success that season. Won't necessarily be the best hitter or best pitcher, but usually will be a player who I deem (through statistics) to have contributed more to their team's success then any other player in the league. Thus it almost always goes to a player on a team who either was in the playoffs or in serious playoff contention as well. (so roughly a MVP award to some extent). |

Also, initially I had expected more controversy about some of my Commissioner's award picks as at times I felt it could go one of a few ways, but in most cases there usually isn't any. I wonder if that is because people assumed the AI and its faulty logic chose the award instead of me and my faulty logic?

I think I'm in one of those moods today.. I'll start my own debate with myself on this year's award! Why Prebble for the Republic League?
Why not Ward who had better Avg, HR and RBI than him? Why not Lemieux who had an outstanding season and dominated the league in ERA? If there were so many good players on Hartford why not someone like the Tanaka award winner Hou Chen for COlorado instead since he had to carry more of the weight himself? |

Top 10 Win Shares per team
(broken up two teams per post since FOFC likes to eat posts with too many spreadsheets in them evidently.)

I dont have the game in front of me so I wont debate it, but ive always just assumed you made a good choice. lol sounds silly but thats just the way I think. Like this year I just saw that it was from Hyde's team from the RL, he won the title, so that looks good. Eric's guy won it this year, and while im sure Che's stats can rival Brooheads, Eric beat me, so it should go to one of his guys. |

Interesting that Munoz had more win shares then Ward.

Man.. Munoz is awesome. He isn't the pure hitter that I would overpay for, but if I had a team I would definitely try to pry Munoz away from you. A young, cheap, middle infielder with great great defense who gets on at the tune of a .420 OBP.. I'm sold! Sure Ward had a .024 better batting avg than Munoz, but Munoz had an On base percentage of .040 better! Munoz also stole 64 bases on 82 attempts for a 78% success rate. |

2034 Hall of Fame Inductees
Friday, October 14th, 2033: Colón Honored by FOOL Hall of Fame A huge crowd watched José Colón become the newest member of the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame today. "I'm a big believer in whatever you want, if you want something out of this game, you've got to put the work in it. You've got to work hard," said the outstanding right fielder, whose new plaque described him as "an artisan with a bat whose daily pursuit of excellence produced a .340 lifetime batting average, 3156 hits and 479 home runs." After the induction ceremony Colón was asked what was the most thrilling moment in his career. He responded quickly, "No doubt about it, your first hit in the big leagues. That's tops. It means you're on your way. When you get the first hit, then you can get the rest." Friday, October 14th, 2033: Front Office Offseason League Honors Blackmore "He simply produced -- game after game after game. That's what I loved about him." Those sentiments were expressed by one of J.D. Blackmore's managers at the gifted right fielder's Hall of Fame induction ceremony yesterday. On a cloudy, but comfortable afternoon, he took his rightful place among the best Front Office Offseason League players of all-time. The newest Hall of Famer assessed his career in these words: "I did my best to contribute to the team -- in the field, at the plate, in the dugout. I didn't care about personal numbers. I just went out there to win." Blackmore played in 2739 games with a .293 career batting average and 2856 hits. He also scored 1842 runs and drove in 1770 runs with 425 home runs. Blackmore retired from baseball, when he was 43. |

Sunday, November 6th, 2033: FOOL News: Free Agents File
Front Office Offseason League announced the start of the free agency period today. Players with expiring contracts began to file as the clock struck midnight and general managers were already making the rounds. With the opening of free agency came a predictable chorus of speculation from the media. While most teams are likely to make at least some small moves, it's still uncertain who the movers and shakers will be. Reporters expect a lot of attention to be lavished on the cream of the free agent crop, including these players: 1. Armando Rojas, 38 year-old starting pitcher 2. Ernesto Galló, 30 year-old first baseman 3. Oliver Whittingham, 35 year-old third baseman 4. Joe Durham, 36 year-old starting pitcher 5. Luis Santana, 31 year-old first baseman 6. Dave Long, 35 year-old second baseman 7. Gustavo Rosales, 31 year-old first baseman 8. Francisco Salinas, 35 year-old second baseman 9. Nathan Ewbank, 33 year-old starting pitcher 10. Travis Carey, 32 year-old catcher Signings can continue throughout the off-season, although most of the high quality players are expected to conclude negotiations long before then. Most players want to be well paid, but they also want to get settled so they can start the process of moving family across town or across the country. |

Well he's coming off a good year so it looks like he should be fine for at least a couple more. I would have signed him to a two year deal if I had the funds. The more I look at my Archuleta signing the more I'm kicking myself. He's not even the best pitcher on my team and I freaked out and gave him $10 Million a year! Doh!

yeah, I signed Archuleta for you initially because he was decent in Boston and you really had no pitching at the time. I pretty much had to pay as much as you had available since he was the best Pitching free agent at his age to hit the market for quite some time. Unfortunately he came to Chico and despite having great ratings, just was miserable there. never really pitched up to his ratings at all. So Chico ended up finishing tied for the final playoff spot at the end of the season three straight years, losing out in the 3 game playoff all three times (That is how close they got) before a few younger pitchers finally developed to be decent major leaguers. A week or two ago I looked back at the Archuleta signing to see where I went wrong. he was among the league leaders in Strikeouts every season. Had an excellent defense behind him, had a good BABIP each year. The end answer I determined was that he simply gave up too many home runs, doubles and triples to play in Chico. If Archuleta had gone somewhere like Apex, he would have dominated I bet. |

Yea I'll be honest and say that I didn't really look at his stats much before I resigned him. I assumed he would be great just looking at his ratings, but he's pretty mediocre. He's also very rich now. I've been thinking about changing my stadium to be a little more pitcher friendly...

Just so you guys know I will be out of town from tonight until sunday night. Try not to miss me too much this weekend, as I will be volunteering in the beautiful Sierra Nevadas. I'm going to let the computer do my spring training lineups, but I will have a beautiful fully handmade export for the season on monday. Have a nice weekend everyone

Chief pulling off the always fun trade Rosales and then re-sign him as a free agent move.
Dave Long finds a good home that I am sure will know how to use him. Sierra will likely retire as a New York Hero Hensley still making pretty good money at 40 years old. |

The new file is up! The 74th season of FOOL will run Monday night.
Tune in to the FOOL WBC this weekend to see how some of your players did prior to the 2074 season. Perhaps we will see a new rising star emerge like Nick Vega did over 10 years ago in the first FOOL WBC. Perhaps there will be a suprise upset like Team Japan pulled off in the last WBC! |

In addition, this season the defending champs Hartford Harpooners have announced they will be going to a retro look somewhat similar to the jerseys from the late 1980s. You can see team star Renaud Lemieux in one of the new jerseys. (He also appears to have grown a silly looking mustache in the offseason too!)
Outfielder Brian Prebble in the new jersey: And finally 1B Brennan Ward: |

Alan, can you take a look at my salary cap situation for me ? On my salary report I'm under the cap, but on my financial page I'm over barely. Do I need to get under or am I ok ?

What we use to determine if you are over/under is what is shown in League Reports -> Financial Report : Payroll. As of the spring training sim, Hartford showed up as $65,169,850 so just slightly over the cap. Your individual team salary report shows a different figure because it only lists the major league salaries that are locked in. So what is the difference between the two? Why is there a $400k discrepency? 100k is the major league minimum salary. You currently have four minor leaguers up on your spring training roster. Right now they have no salary and thus do not show up in your salary report page. As soon as they play a major league game this season, they have to be paid league minimum of 100k, and your salary report page will automatically update to show that. So the league wide report that we use is actually a step ahead of the game as it is automatically counting the 400k extra from those players. You will see if you send those four back to the minors, 100k will drop off that total for each one you send down. So theoretically to get under the cap you could send down two of those players and you would be fine salary-cap wise. So yes, if you kept your roster exactly as is currently you would be over cap once the regular season began. Hope that helps! |

I figured Rosales would end up back in Hooligan town. I scouted out who had enough cap space to sign either him or Long. there were only 4 teams with the cap space. 2 of those teams already had 1bmen and then there was Chief an I. I figure since he had Rosalas before, he'd make a play to get him again. I placed below asking price offers on both Rosalas and long, figuring that if Chief decided to stand pat that my offer would be the only one remaining on Rosales....Long was more wishful thinking as being able to play all 4 poitions meant that all 4 remaining teams could find a home for him Then Muns free'd up some cap space and i figured he was going to make a big push for Long (He CERTAINLY doesnt need Rosalas) Anyways, it's early and i am not really coherent yet this moring...I just had a lot of fun getting in the minds of my fellow FOOLs and trying to figure out what they were going to do. I was in the lucky position of having decent players at all positions, but still having cap space to improve my team if the right player fell in my lap! It was a fun off season

I have a question for everyone. I dont expect a whole lot of respones especially from the CL but I have a dilema.
So my INF looks like this with With 2nd-Lujan, 1b-Le, SS-Sherman and newly aquired 3b-Jasper Hart. My question is take a look at Gavin Taylor on my team. Where do you stick him? He only plays 1b and looks like a defensive nightmare anywhere else I stick him, however his bat just looks dynamite. Would you stick him somewhere out of place at maybe 3rd??? or do you just sit him and platoon him??? I alraedy play Lujan out of place at 2nd and that has turned out ok. Im not sure If my "D" can handle 2 out of 4 spots being "out of place". Id prob would like to deal him at some point, but there doesnt seem like there is any interest. Any thoughts??? |

There is interest. I just decided I would rather stick with the prospects I have rather than go for him. But he is a heck of a hitter. He appears to be perfect for a permanent DH role in the RL.
