Windows 7 killed my display drivers

I was playing FM this morning when my monitor blinked off, came back on, and now I'm stuck in low-resolution hell. Win7 forgot what kind of monitor I had now only lets me display in 1024x768 resolution on my 24" Viewsonic. Viewsonic doesn't have the right drivers, Nvidia doesn't have the right drivers, and Microsoft doesn't have the right drivers. Seriously WTF?

Have you gone into device manager? Seems weird you had it and then it took it away.

Yep - W7 just sees "Generic non plug-n-play" device

Restarting didn't help?

Or what about unplugging and replugging?

Do you have the original media that had the drivers on them? Could try re-installing from there.

I would uninstall and reinstall the video drivers. It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall DirectX. Its more likely that one of those is causing the problem instead of the software for the monitor.

FWIW, I've tried the following:

Un-installing and re-installing the ViewSonic drivers that came with my monitor
Un-installing and re-installing the ViewSonic drivers that are on their website
Un-installing and re-installing the nVidia drivers that came with my computer
Installing generic drivers from microsoft
Deleting all drivers and rebooting

Nothing lets me get better than 1024x768.

I'm fucking furious

Did Windows 7 come installed on the computer or did you upgrade? If upgrade, did you upgrade from Vista or XP?

Why aren't you downloading your video card drivers from the manufacturers website?

Nvidia.com?

Go into safe mode (pressing F8 before it gets to the "Booting Windows" screen. Remove any display drivers that are installed. Reboot and see what happens. Once you have video go to the Nvidia website and download drivers for your video card. Don't worry about the drivers for you LCD screen, those are pretty much pointless nowadays.

I have no video. Period. I don't know if there is any safe-mode or whatever. It's a black screen with no video signal.

Also, the sound card stopped working, too, I've noticed.

OK - I have dual video cards in my rig, so i took the one i've been using out and booted, then plugged into the other one.

I've got video, 1024x768, so that's something. Still no clue why Win 7 is incapable of displaying a higher resolution than that.

sounds like your other video card just died. most likely not win 7's fault. just bad luck.

My understanding is that this is a known issue and Microsoft is currently crafting a massive ad campaign to deal with the problem.

Seriously though, sorry you are having trouble. This kind of stuff is maddening.

Was thinking this even before Todd's post about not even being able to get video on post(if I read it right). Bad coincidence, nothing to do with 7.

All the times I have seen an OS cause this a reboot fixed it. The times a reboot didn't it was invariably a hardware issue.

it still could be dead. it might be recognizing it , but something could still be seriously wrong with the card. I've had it happen and seen it before elsewhere as well.

Dead doesnt always mean it won't detect it completely.

have you taken the card out completely and re installed, or at least stuck it in a different slot and see? because if its not working at the bios in the beginning, its most likely not a win 7 problem but a vid card prob.

yeah - done all that. There are 3 slots that can fit my 2 cards = 12 possible combinations of 1 card at a time and 2 at a time. W7 sees them, knows what they are, loves to install the drivers, even the nVida control panel works like a charm. But they both swear my 22" monitor is only capable of 1024x768.

What drivers are you using? xp, vista, or win 7? I'd try switching to whatever ones you arn't using. I had to use a mix of drivers for one of my laptops, and one of my desktops. some xp, some vista, and some win 7. can't hurt to try a set of Xp, or vista, or whatever...

i agree - but it doesn't make sense that - if something went bad on the card - it can still limp along at 1024x768

Something to remember for the future.... If you have no video on boot, it is NOT a driver issue. Drivers are not loaded until Windows boots. If you have no video at the bios, it is hardware (monitor, video card, or motherboard).

Glad to hear that it was a simple fix like unplugging the monitor. Anyway, kind of enjoyed reading the post and trying to think what else the problem could be.

So what is it if, as you are using the computer, the resolution spontaneously adjusts it self downward?

EDID, bitches.

Internet tubes got clogged. You just had to clear them by pulling the cord on the monitor. Obviously.

I have owned 2 different Hanns-g monitors in the last 18 months.

The first one was pretty good for about 10 months, then it got static lines across the bottom. I took it back to Best Buy and replaced it with a new one. The second one lasted for about 4 months and it went stoopid. It would stay on for about 10 seconds then turn off. Nothing I did could get it to stay on.

So, I took that one back and swapped it for a Dell.

I will never buy another HANNS product.
