Cleveland Defeats Virginia Beach 5-2, Pajetta Nabs 300th Save
Monday, April 20th, 1987: In an effort that will possibly punch his ticket to the Hall of Fame, Gil Pajetta notched his 300th career save today at Field of the Surf, leading the Cleveland Naps to a 5-2 triumph over the Virginia Beach Surf. Known for his calm and cool demeanor in the heat of competition, the 31-year-old Pajetta was similarly-collected after the game. "To me it's just a number. I wasn't really nervous or thinking too much about it. I'm just trying to make my pitches and get hitters out," he said. The star reliever allowed no hits and no runs, while working 1 innings in recording his milestone save.

During his career Pajetta has converted 300 saves with a 3.52 ERA. In 547 games, he has a 44-30 won-lost mark with 651 strikeouts in 591.1 innings.

Pajetta is 6th all time in saves, just 5 saves behind 5th place on the all time list, currently held by the great Adriano 'The Tornado' Bleck of the 1960s Indianapolis Clowns teams.

Number 2000 for Gamblin
Monday, April 27th, 1987: The Spring contest with Ann Arbor featured a real shining moment: Duncan Gamblin, the Lions right fielder, collected career base hit #2000. That his team lost the game, 8-2, took away only a little bit of the luster. Fittingly, the 32-year-old Gamblin, who went 2-for-4, received a warm ovation from the Ann Arbor Grounds crowd.

Checking out his career figures, Gamblin has played in 1639 games with a .310 batting average. Among his 2001 hits are 384 home runs. He also has scored 1098 runs, stolen 0 bases and driven in 1345 runs.

Indianapolis's Martin Gets 3000th Hit
Monday, May 4th, 1987: Don Martin started out as a baby-faced rookie many seasons ago. Yesterday at Clown Car the Indianapolis veteran joined the league's 3000-hit club. Martin achieved that milestone with a 3-for-4 day in the Clowns 9-1 win over the London Bishops.

He spoke to reporters in the clubhouse after the game and said, "Looking at the list of all the great players who have done this is humbling. It is a great honor to be among them."

In his career Martin has hit .306 with 3002 hits, 252 home runs, 1448 RBIs and scored 1432 runs.

Monday, June 1st, 1987: Dan Phelps earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Maricopa center fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

2000 Hits for Leyva
Monday, June 15th, 1987: For Roberto Leyva, it was a red-letter day. The Balzac Ticklers first baseman slapped his 2000th career hit. That his team defeated the Mexico City Aztecs, 6-4, made it even sweeter.

His manager paid tribute to Leyva after the game: "I've followed Roberto since he came into the league," he said. "Fine ballplayer. Fine work ethic. I'm not surprised by what he's achieved."

The 31-year-old Leyva finished the day with 2 hits in 3 at-bats.

During his career Leyva is hitting .297 with a total of 258 home runs.

Great Day for Burkett, Hits for Cycle
Saturday, June 20th, 1987: Hitting for the cycle is defined as hitting a single, double, triple and home run in the same game. How often does that happen? Not very often, especially considering that a cycle is a microcosm of what makes a complete hitter -- he must possess power (homer), speed (triple) and make regular contact (four hits).

Well, Tony Burkett is a complete hitter -- at least for one ballgame. Today at Memorial Stadium he hit for the cycle to lead Washington Freedom to a 9-8 win over the Boston Resettlers. All told in the game Burkett delivered 4 hits in 4 at-bats with 2 RBI and 4 runs scored.

He admitted to the press in the postgame interview, "Lotta luck in hitting for the cycle. Several unique things have to come together... all in the same game."

T. Burkett tripled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off J. Urbina in the 4th, walked in the 6th and doubled in the 7th.

Burkett is swinging at a .294 pace on the year with 15 home runs, 41 RBIs and 52 runs scored. He has played in 67 games.

Flowers Snags RL Top Hurler Trophy
Wednesday, July 1st, 1987: June's premier pitcher was Darrell Flowers of New York Legends. He pulverized Republic League hitters all month long and picked up the Pitcher of the Month award. The Legends star hurler fashioned a 5-0 en route to the honor.

He had 35 strikeouts in 40 innings and compiled a 2.02 ERA. Other clubs hit .197 against him.

Thus far this season Flowers has posted a 9-2 record, started 16 games, struck out 88 batters in 97.2 innings and compiled a 3.41 ERA.

Mexico City's Salas Chosen June's Best in CL
Wednesday, July 1st, 1987: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Manny Salas still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in June. The 34-year-old starter for Mexico City was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 8 wins and 1 loss with 37 strikeouts in his 9 starts, putting up a fine 1.72 ERA in 57.2 innings of work.

In 26 starts this year Salas has posted 16 wins while suffering 5 losses. He has pitched 151.2 innings, allowed 128 hits, struck out 98 and has a 2.67 ERA.

Guerrero Takes RL's Best Bat Trophy
Wednesday, July 1st, 1987: When guys like New York's Ignacio Guerrero win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive June, the longtime Republic League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 25 hits in 67 at-bats.

The veteran center fielder hit for a .373 batting average and collected 14 home runs, 30 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Guerrero is batting .316 this season in 57 games with 22 home runs, 61 RBIs and 47 runs scored. He has 56 hits in 177 at-bats.

CL's Top Hitter Selected
Wednesday, July 1st, 1987: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Roberto Leyva. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Balzac's first baseman pinned down the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .436 in June collecting 9 home runs, 28 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

So far this season Leyva is hitting .348 with 17 home runs, 68 RBIs and 69 runs scored. He has 100 hits in 287 at-bats and a .457 OBP.

Big Month for RL Rookie
Wednesday, July 1st, 1987: Darrell Flowers takes the hill with uncharacteristic poise for a man of so few years. Flowers is just a lad, but he strung together some solid starts last month to win the Republic League Rookie of the Month crown.

In June he held opponents to a .197 average as he struck out 35 in 40 innings. In 6 starts he nailed down 5 wins, suffered no losses and compiled a 2.02 ERA.

In 16 starts this season, Flowers has picked up 9 wins while suffering 2 losses. He has pitched 97.2 innings, allowed 82 hits, struck out 88 and posted a 3.41 ERA.

June's Best CL Rookie Named

Wednesday, July 1st, 1987: Roberto Álvarez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the London hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .345 average with 40 hits, 2 home runs and 18 RBIs.

So far this year Álvarez has hit .308 with 5 home runs, 36 RBIs and 57 runs scored.

Gamblin Raps 400th Roundtripper
Tuesday, July 7th, 1987: It was an historic day in the life of Duncan Gamblin. The 32-year-old Spring right fielder recorded the 400th homer of his career in the Lions 13-5 triumph over the Portland Axemen.

In the clubhouse after the game, Gamblin told BNN, "I was just looking for a ball to drive... and I got one."

To date Gamblin has a .309 career batting average and has totaled 400 home runs.

No Hits for Bonner, Streak Ends at 32
Saturday, July 18th, 1987: After 32 games, Jon Bonner had his hitting streak ended abruptly today by Portland at Legends Ballpark. The Legends third baseman failed to get a hit in 4 at-bats and his brief fling with fame has come to a halt. But Bonner seemed to care less -- it didn't matter as New York took a 10-2 victory from the Axemen.

Bonner didn't dwell on the streak saying, "It was good while it lasted. If it had to end, I'm glad it ended with a victory."

Bonner is currently batting .305 with 8 home runs, 59 RBIs and 63 runs scored. He has 125 hits in 410 at-bats.

In the clubhouse, the Banana Sluggers catcher spoke about the milestone achievement. "To be honest, I don't even remember my first home run," he said. "But this one I don't think I'll forget. Who knows if I'll hit another hundred, or fifty, or even ten?"

On his historic day, Navarro banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and scored 3 runs with 2 RBI.

During his career Navarro has compiled a .242 batting average and collected 1902 hits, 400 home runs and 1388 RBIs.

Havana's Adjo Hammers #300
Sunday, July 19th, 1987: Havana's outstanding center fielder Ichchaam Adjo joined the 300 home run club today at Clown Car with a booming blast in the Banana Sluggers win over the Clowns. They topped Indianapolis 8-4.

On his milestone day Adjo had 1 hit in 5 at-bats with 2 runs batted in and 1 run scored.

Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way."

Adjo has a .280 career batting average and has hit a total of 300 home runs.

300th Save for Jorge López, Washington Downs Stafford 5-4
Tuesday, July 28th, 1987: It clearly was a special game at Constitution Plaza for Washington Freedom pitcher Jorge López as his family and friends watched from the stands as he closed out career save number 300. The 36-year-old reliever pitched 1 innings for his milestone save, giving up no runs and no hits in a 5-4 victory over the Stafford Terriers. "This couldn't have happened to a better guy," the Freedom manager said after the game. "You could see it in the way the crowd reacted today. It's hard not to be a fan of Jorge."

Since breaking into the league, López has compiled a 98-126 mark, pitched in 975 games, been credited with 300 saves and amassed a 4.31 ERA. He has 1552 strikeouts in 1761 innings pitched.
