US Open Thread

Had to start a thread on the US Open because my boy Dustin Johnson from Coastal Carolina has been spectacular today so far. Drove the par 4 280 yard 4th hole to 6 feet and made the eagle putt, just missed an chip in for eagle on the 6th and then just now knocked it to within a foot of the hole on the par 3 7th that has had everybody else cursing as its downwind and bouncing very hard to the back of the green for everybody else.

Phil started off very badly with bogeys in three of his first four or five holes. Tiger started off bad too, but has come back to +2 over, 2 under for the day.

Tiger is on the 18th green in 2 shots. If he makes eagle, he will go 6 under for the day and 3 shots behind Johnson.

It's safe to assume tiger had a three way last night, right.

heh Easy Mac.

He missed the Eagle putt, but is now -1 in third place. At one point after he bogeyed two holes early on he was 9 shots behind. Unbelievable

Amazing round for Tiger today, especially after starting with a couple bogeys.

Watching Mcdowell and DJ go at it today is fun. I really enjoy rooting for Dustin, and hes been playing some solid solid golf the last couple years.

That said, if Tiger comes out and shoots a 66 again tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised if that gets him home and US Open championship #4

Even if he doesn't come back and win it, he really needed something like this.

Tough bounce for Mickelson on 18 (though it's his own fault for landing it that close to the rocks), I was hoping he'd birdie that hole and be within a few shots heading into tomorrow.

And Dustin closes with a birdie on 17 and 18 to take a 3 shot lead heading into tomorrow. I've been such a big fan of his since his Coastal Carolina days, and to see him play so well on one of my favorite courses has been such a big thrill. I hope he can hold it together for one more day.

A 66 for Tiger will almost certainly win the title, but I can't see it happening.

Dustin Johnson should be the big favorite, especially after winning the last two PGA Tour events at Pebble Beach, but if he has an attack of nerves I think that Els and Mickelson are just as likely to pick up the pieces as Tiger.

I like Ishikawa, but he is too far back and has too many people ahead of him to have a realistic shot.

EDIT: Is melting down on the first three holes. That last tee shot was atrocious.

Was there a rain delay or something? I tuned in expecting to see the final few holes and the leaders are only on 4?

Nope, since they are on the west coast they are taking adavantage of the ability to have the final round in primetime on the east coast.

A guy on ESPN radio was pointing out how sloppy the reporting was on this and how it's really inconsequential. In those 2 tournaments he played a total of 2 rounds on the course they're playing on this weekend; 1 round was a 74 and the other round was also in the 70s.

Davis Love III making a charge would love to see him win it!

-3 on the day through 6 and 4 back of the lead at +1

yeah, I'm stupid. I saw it went until 6, and I was thinking 6 EST which would be 3 my time, but it was on my guide with PST.

The way he's playing right now, Dustin Johnson will be lucky to break 80.

I'm putting my money on Els. He seems to be in the right mode.

being that Tiger is only 3 back of the lead he has a decent shot if he can get it together and make a few birds. Phil is also right there, and Ernie Els is 1 shot back.

So DJ and Mcdowell , Phil Tiger and Ernie, and then Davis Love. I think any one of these 6 have a good shot at taking home the trophy. Should be a great back 9 to watch.

Only person I'm kinda ruling out is Gregory Havret. but who knows I guess!

The fact that the AT&T is a pro am means that the course will also be a completely different animal this week.

I think 1 under par will probably win this tournament.

If McDowall can par the rest of the way he has won it, but that is one hell of a task in a US Open.

That's partially incorrect. His last round on this course back at February was a 74, but the two before that was a 64 and a 65.

Not that it matters right now. I feel so bad for him being such a big fan of his, I'm pretty heartbroken right now. I expected him to struggle somewhat with it being the last round of the Open and all, but some of his shots have been embarassingly bad.

This set up for drama after the leader starts off going backward, but I have to say it's been boring and unexciting to see all these guys just keep backing up further and further. Pars look like they will win the whole thing at this point.

well at least Johnson won't be alone with the bad rounds-Woods, Michelson, Els will all be majorly disappointed. Meanwhile the French guy nobody gave a chance after he got paired with Tiger, might win it. Just a crazy final round.

Gah, Johnson even got burned on the last hole. Man that round is going to be hard for him to ever recover from.
