FOOL 2086 Regular Season Thread

It's almost time. Just two hours away.

Of course, I'll be at work, but still...

It's tough to say what I expect from the Hooligans this season. It was nice to get to the playoffs and the Classic last season after so long of an absence, and the core strength of that team, the pitching, is still here (and in fact I added a couple more nice looking starting pitching prospects to the staff).

My offense has me concerned, though. I sent a LOT of hitting talent to free agency last season. Catcher Giles and LF Blanco were terrific all around hitters. 1B Santos was a bomber. And SS Hudson was a terrific defensive SS with .300-plus type CON ability. Regular all of nothing candidate Estrada retired. Also, my 2B Merritt last year (who I also let go to free agency, but I brought back) had a massively overachieving season, and I have to guess he is not going to have a season like that again.

Dani Alvarez is probably a wash with Blanco. Brooks and Sato should be good enough to replace Santos's production (if not his power), and Francisco Alvarez is a likely upgrade at 3B. I have a new rookie potential star in Nelson Rodriguez, but he's not as good defensively as Hudson, nor does he hit for as much CON. I didn't replace Giles at all; just picked up a key backup behind the plate to play behind last year's backup Olinger. And I added Atcheson as somewhat of a replacement for Estrada (better CON, less POW).

Overall, I think I am fairly even in the POW department, but I have taken a step back in CON, and that could be an issue--it wasn't an area of strength to begin with.

I also think that, while my pitching is good, it also overachieved a bit last year. I think with less top end talent on offense and a regression to the mean for the pitching, not to mention another tough group of contenders in the RL, it is unlikely the Hooligans will return to the playoffs this season.

Some of the things we're watching tonight!

Does the league commissioner's office really hate Colorado as much as everyone else??

Can Luke 'Legend' Abbot become the 66th pitcher with 3000 strikeouts in his career?

Can the Continental League win their 4th straight title for the first time since 2029?

Can another team with a 'D' pre-season rating win it all? Boston or Chico this might just be your season!

So is it possible for Colorado to be forced to sign Palmer White to a $10 M contract to throw out the first pitch before every game, and have him take up cap space and a roster spot? Thanks.

Wow, I'm only gonna make predictions on the RL like I did last week. It's a hard play to call!

1.Colorado
2. Hartford

The surprise: Brunswick

Oh my gosh! I just looked at your team and they certainly scare the crap out of me. I guess we're not even close to as good as I thought.

I'm the teacher around here and I say A- (the minus is for the infielders) easily. You guys are my pick for #1 in the CL.

I certainly don't think Tokyo will live up to the A rating. My pitching is sufficient, but my offense lacks the lethal hitters you need to take advantage.

Good luck!

That is the best thing about preseason ratings!

Teams you rate low think they deserve higher. Teams that you rate high are modest and try to talk down expectations.

No one is happy!

Alvarado Mystifies Toronto
Saturday, April 6th, 2086: Ricardo Alvarado of the Colorado Rancheros really strutted his stuff on the mound today with a 8-0 victory. He was almost untouchable, bewildering the Toronto Marlboros with a 1-hit shutout in which he struck out 6 and gave up 2 walks.

Mesh Gets 300th Save, Shuts Down Marlboros 6-5
Saturday, April 20th, 2086: Success in close games is what separates good teams from great teams. A great bullpen specialist is a big part of that success. Today, Roger Mesh of Ann Arbor solidified his position as one of the great relievers in the game by recording the 300th save of his career against the Toronto Marlboros. Mesh reached the milestone in the Winged Lingerines 6-5 win at Ballpark of Toronto. The 32-year-old hurler worked 1 innings and gave up no runs and 2 hits in his historic save.

Mesh has made 643 relief appearances and has 300 lifetime saves.

Teodoro Earns RL's Best Pitcher Honor
Wednesday, May 1st, 2086: Carlitos Teodoro hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Republic League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In April the Hammersmith starter earned a 4-0 mark in 5 starts. He threw 35.1 innings, struck out 33 and compiled a solid 2.29 ERA.

CL Top Pitcher for April Picked

Wednesday, May 1st, 2086: Matthew Caesar was the anchor in the Halifax bullpen last month and snatched up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors for April. The 29-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 14.1 innings over 12 relief appearances and collected a 2-0 record with 17 strikeouts and 6 saves while etching his 0.00 ERA.

Wednesday, May 1st, 2086: When Matt Cashmann stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

The young Boston left fielder posted a .412 batting average with 5 home runs, 17 RBIs and scored 22 runs. Cashmann also worked pitchers for 5 walks to post a .478 on-base percentage.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Wednesday, May 1st, 2086: Jesús García is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Hartford hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .252 average with 28 hits, 4 home runs and 18 RBIs.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Wednesday, May 1st, 2086: Youngster Richard Hampton emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Boston deserved the honor, batting .278 with 5 home runs and 13 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Hampton enjoy the limelight.

Giles Slams Milestone Homer
Monday, May 6th, 2086: Apex Assassins slugging catcher John Giles swatted his way to the 300 home run mark today as the Assassins fell to the Napa Valley 6-4.

For his part, Giles chipped in 2 RBI, scored 1 run and collected 1 hit in 4 at-bats, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

"It was a special day for John," the team publicist said afterward, "He was disappointed at the result, but everyone was all smiles as he crossed home plate. We're proud of him."

In his career Giles has compiled a .289 batting average and collected 1613 hits, 300 home runs and 1062 RBIs.

Bedeschi Best RL Starter in May
Saturday, June 1st, 2086: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Evaristo Bedeschi still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 29-year-old starter for Ann Arbor was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and 1 loss with 44 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 1.62 ERA in 50 innings of work.

This season Bedeschi has crafted a 7-2 mark with a 2.04 ERA in 88.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .200 against him and he has 76 strikeouts.

Ramos Top CL Starter in May
Saturday, June 1st, 2086: May's top-rated pitcher was Francisco Ramos of Apex Assassins. He demoralized Continental League hitters in posting a 3-2 record and captured the Pitcher of the Month award.

In 6 starts, Ramos limited opposing batters to a .182 average. He rang up 34 strikeouts in 42.2 innings of work, issued 14 walks, and crafted a 1.69 ERA.

Looking at his season stats, Ramos has won 4 and lost 6, collecting 63 strikeouts and 27 walks in 76 innings with a 2.61 ERA.

Which one? The one where you say you will do lousy or the one where you say you will say you do lousy so you do good?

Hart Razor-Sharp, Shuts out Colorado
Saturday, June 8th, 2086: Ann Arbor hurler Aaron Hart was at his best as he whitewashed the Colorado Rancheros 2-0 today.

"He just kept the ball down, did a good job, made his pitches," said the Colorado manager. "We didn't do a good job making adjustments, so we helped him out a little bit."

Hart fired a 2-hitter and totaled 4 strikeouts and no walks in the shutout performance.

This year Hart has compiled a 2-8 record with a 7.11 ERA.

I already admitted that I don't EXPECT us to suck...which is usually the worst choice ever.

But no, my predictions for the other teams are going well!

200 Victories for José Álvarez
Tuesday, June 11th, 2086: What would you do after you had just won your 200th game? Run around Ann Arbor Grounds doing cartwheels, jumping for joy and waving to the crowd? Well, maybe you and I would do that, but not José Álvarez -- that's not his way.

After he notched number 200, the 34-year-old Ann Arbor hurler spoke to the press like he always has -- in a soft, quiet voice. He wasn't doing any cartwheels or even anything resembling a jump for joy. "Obviously it feels very good," Álvarez commented. "To win this many games, you've got to have a lot of help."

Álvarez got his milestone victory by beating the Hartford Harpooners 10-4. He held them to 12 hits in 7.1 innings and rung up 3 strikeouts with 1 walk.

After sharing his thoughts with the press, he went to the clubhouse. There he was greeted by the guys who had helped him get #200. His teammates showered him with champagne and then gave him a rousing round of applause. That got to him -- for the first time today, Álvarez's face broke into a big smile.

Lifetime Álvarez has registered a 200-121 record with a 4.28 ERA.

Álvarez Brings Home RL Batter of Month Honor
Monday, July 1st, 2086: Iván Álvarez battered Republic League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

Monday, July 1st, 2086: Jesús García earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Hartford right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

García is hitting .283 in 2086 with 46 RBIs and 9 home runs.

Center Fielder Nabs CL Rookie Award
Monday, July 1st, 2086: Richard Hampton was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 23-year-old center fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen June's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 23 games Hampton batted .369 for Boston, slapping 24 hits in 65 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 13 runs and scored 12 times.

Republic League Announces July's Top Pitcher
Thursday, August 1st, 2086: Ricardo Crespo has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in July and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Rancheros bullpen ace collected 10 saves and 6 strikeouts in 14 innings, holding the opposition to a .250 average and posting a 0.64 ERA and a 1-0 record.

For the year Crespo has 24 saves. In 44 relief appearances he has hurled 49.2 innings, fanned 39 and issued 24 walks with a 4-5 record. The Colorado reliever has recorded a 3.62 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .261 when he is on the hill.

Ramos Wins CL Top Pitcher Award

Thursday, August 1st, 2086: The Continental League announced today that Francisco Ramos has been chosen the league's Pitcher of the Month. The Apex starter had everything working for him last month as he glided to a 4-1 record.

In July Ramos chalked up a 1.64 ERA in 38.1 innings with 34 strikeouts and 6 walks.

This season Ramos has a 11-7 mark in 20 starts with a 2.18 ERA. He has given up 105 hits in 144.2 innings, struck out 131 and issued 41 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .204 batting average against him.
