Red-Hot Bat: Riles Collects Cycle
Sunday, May 15th, 2039: 4 hits is a great day for any player, but when they come in four different denominations, that's a cycle -- a rarity by baseball's standards. Frank Riles had a single, double, triple and home run for the Chicago Southpaws and led them to a 10-2 decision over St Louis at The Brewery with 2 runs scored and 4 runs batted in.

Frank Riles hit an RBI triple in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Juan Hernández in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, doubled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 7th.

This year Riles is batting .333 with 1 home run and 19 RBIs. In 36 games he has scored 23 times.

Cortéz Gets 7 Hits
Thursday, May 19th, 2039: It was a big day with the bat for Bartolo Cortéz of the Spring Lions at Ballpark of Cleveland as he bashed out hit after hit after hit to defeat Cleveland 32-11.

After the game he said, "Guys, it's just one game in a long season. I hit it hard and found some holes today. 7 hits in 7 tries. But my hits are not the big thing in the game. The victory is the important thing. That's the story."

At the end of the game Cortéz had collected 7 hits in 7 at-bats and a small mention in the record book. He was happy. He had a big day with the bat. And the Lions had won.

Bartolo Cortéz doubled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI triple in the 3rd, walked in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th, hit a two-run double in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.

During the current season Cortéz is batting at a .350 clip with no home runs and 31 RBIs. He has played in 39 games and scored 28 times.

RL Selects Baxter May's Best Pitcher
Wednesday, June 1st, 2039: Bobby Baxter has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in May and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

So far this season Baxter has 12 saves in 28 relief appearances with a 5-3 record and 4.65 ERA.

Pirates Morán Chosen May's Best in CL
Wednesday, June 1st, 2039: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Jorge Morán still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 31-year-old starter for Plantana was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and no losses with 22 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.50 ERA in 39.2 innings of work.

This season in 11 starts Jorge Morán has a record of 8-2 with 46 strikeouts in 68.2 innings and a 2.36 ERA.

300 Home Runs for Harrington
Tuesday, June 14th, 2039: Portland defeated Spring today 7-2 and took some of the joy out of Phil Harrington's 300th career home run.

"I just wanted to get a good swing on the ball all day," Harrington said. "And I did."

Despite the loss, it was a good game for the 31-year-old Lions first baseman. He had 1 hit, scored 1 run and had 1 run batted in.

The Axemen manager said, "You could see he was aggressive up there. The worst thing we did was throw him a strike. It probably would have been better if threw the ball outside of the strike zone every time he came to the plate because he seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with."

In his career Harrington has compiled a .319 batting average and collected 1610 hits, 300 home runs and 1021 RBIs.

Ferguson on a Rampage, Hits for Cycle
Sunday, June 26th, 2039: Getting 5 hits in a game is no easy feat, but hitting for the cycle is much more rare. Millard Ferguson was on fire today, going 5 for 7 and hitting for the cycle against Spring at Waikiki Beachpark. His batting escapade sparked the Waikiki Beach Boys to a 8-7 victory over the Lions. For the day the Beach Boys third baseman scored 3 runs and drove in 5.

The feat is rare in baseball as it requires a game of no fewer than four hits and the unusual combination of a home run, which requires a batter to hit for some power, and a triple, which requires a batter to have both speed on the basepaths and a well-placed drive deep into the outfield.

He told reporters after the game, "It just happened. Must have been fate or something... you can't plan this. I was more concerned with winning the game."

Millard Ferguson hit an RBI triple in the 2nd, hit a three-run double in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Chris McKinney in the 6th, singled in the 7th, flied out in the 9th, flied out in the 11th and singled in the 14th.

In 63 games this season Ferguson is batting .304 with 68 hits and 13 home runs. He has scored 42 runs and driven in 52.

Currently Ballard has 17 saves. In 36 relief appearances he has hurled 43.2 innings, struck out 54 and issued 7 walks with a 6-3 record. The Portland reliever has recorded a 1.44 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .199 when he is on the mound.

RL Best Hitter Trophy Goes to Trampakoulos
Friday, July 1st, 2039: Free agent-to-be Arion Trampakoulos has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Republic League Batter of the Month.

In June, the 26-year-old Waikiki first baseman hit .346 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

So far this season Trampakoulos has put up a .283 batting average with 89 hits, 20 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Ramírez Wins Best Bat Trophy in June
Friday, July 1st, 2039: The vote is in and Freddy Ramírez, the 31-year-old first baseman for Plantana, is the winner. Today he was honored with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

In June, Ramírez wowed voters with a .340 average while posting up 9 home runs, 38 RBIs, 22 runs scored and a .429 on-base percentage.
