Jerry Lewis no longer hosting MDA telethon

I know this has gone downhill the last few years, our local stations only covered about half the telethon, but I did not expect this.

Seems like an odd move since he wasn't hosting anyway. Something had to have come up for a clean break like this.

Probably the fact that he scares people more than entertains them these days.

All told, it seemed like they were due for something of a bounce from the pre-announced "Jerry's Last Telethon" planned for this year. Him abruptly being out just seems like a bad turn.

Maybe part of it has to do with him recently coming off as an out-of-touch old geezer that dissed an incredibly powerful show...

"Proctor & Gamble says, 'Are you nuts? You want me to spend $1.6 million for that variety show when I can get the fat lady to lose weight for $62,000. Let's go with that one. We'll call it reality.' And that's what they've done… Who cares?"

And don't even get him started on mobile TV. "They put all of their product on the stupid phone," he said. "You’re gonna put Lawrence of Arabia on that stupid son of a [expletive]?"

So, what, if anything, changed between MDA and Lewis from May to Wednesday? And did what happen, assuming something happened, have anything to do with Idol? (And, yes, we know Biggest Loser's Alison Sweeney is cohosting the MDA telethon, too, but the all-powerful Idol just lends itself better to conspiracy theories than weight-loss shows.)

Bless his soul but he's in Grandpa Simpson territory at this point. Best not to let him anywhere near a camera or open mic.
