FOFC Crawl Comp #2: Deep Elf Ice Elementalist
FOFC Crawl Comp #2: Deep Elf Ice Elementalist
Round 2 We now go from the big beefy Troll that can go insane crazy at toe to toe range any time to the weak frail Deep Elf that must try to use distance to an advantage and muster magical hell upon the enemy. Race: Deep Elf Class: Ice Elementalist God: Your choice Time: Two Weeks This will be a big change of pace in play style. It will be tough to survive the first few levels, but once you start getting a few spells under your belt, you will become more powerful and be able to easily dispatch the enemy. I will be dropping hints throughout the two weeks. 1st hint: magic makes you hungry. Check you spell hunger level z?! that screen also shows the power of your spell and the range. Your first spell is Freeze and is a point blank spell indicated by @>. Cold spells slow enemies so don't be afraid to freeze and run. Good Luck!

I already have... about 10 times. I'm not changing the name each time, just when one gets over level 5 or so.
Another hint: a good branded dagger is nice to have as well for when you run out of mana.

Had a good run going and encountered a really tough level 1 Orcish Mine. Orc Knight, Orc Sorcerer, and two Orc Priests waiting for right inside.
26093 Frosty the Gelid (level 12, -6/53 HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 8, 2011. Was a High Priest of Vehumet. Killed from afar by an orc sorcerer (44 damage) ... with a bolt of fire ... led by an orc knight ... on Level 1 of the Orcish Mines. The game lasted 02:38:30 (23969 turns).

The early named that can go invis on like level 2 are a hell of a lot more challenging now. I can't just berserk and walk into them anymore. :P

I started my guy last night, really sucks that they start with such a low STR and no weapon, but hey it wouldn't be a challenge to play then. I always pick up the first weapon I see, with Freeze's limited range and not great damage I always want to have a backup plan if I run out of mana. Of course the club I picked up was cursed. thought I would die quickly, but instead found a scroll shortly thereafter, read it and it was remove curse! Then got lucky again and found 7 javelins. They are great, can soften them up to save on mana, or outright kill things with one throw.
Here's a helpful tip for newbies-the best gods for magic types to go with is usually Sif Muna or Vehumet. You don't have to worship a god at all of course, but these two are likely the most helpful if you do want to worship one. Good luck everybody! |

Quick death last night on the first try I've had with this character. I didn't even clear the 1st level.
I had found an axe and a knife, but 2 throwing weapons to soften them up before they got near me wasn't enough. Hopefully the next run thru I'll find better items. |

I got my first score over 1000, dying on level 5 when I found a couple frogs + something else. All three came at me and I wasn't strong enough to one shot any of them with spells. I tried pulling something up the stairs but both frogs came and I couldn't get them both down or away from me before dying.

Awful quiet. I hope I didn't pick too hard of a combo for everyone. To make it up to you I will give you a ton of tips. A full conjurer's guide that will give you a lot of useful information.
Conjurer guide - CrawlWiki I am currently level 10 on my latest run and just hit the lair. Hopefully I can stretch this one out.

I haven't been playing as much b/c I'm really into FM right now, but I have taken 5 or 6 shots. I am typically dying to a named on the 3rd or 4th level, Sigmund a few times, Jessica in my most recent game. Not frustrated at all or anything, just nothing interesting to post about either

Well I finally made it to the 4th level and was able to kill a named enemy. It was Pikel, and I managed to only kill one of his slaves in the process.
The wand of cold I found earlier helped kill him. He dropped a +2, +2 whip of electrocution, which may come in handy. I've been fortunate to have come across a good supply of darts to kill the weak monsters from a distance, and once they get next to me the freeze spell has finished them off. I also found the temple before fighting Pikel, and chose Vehumet as my god. The other good items I've found are a couple of rings. One is +3 Strength, one allows me to see invisible creatures, and the last one is a ring of fire. Too bad we cast ice spells. I'll continue my quest tomorrow, but I'm happy to get to the 5th level finally with this character. |

Frigid was rocking everything in site. I had dispatched hordes of blink frogs and several hydras. I stumbled upon the entrance to the Slime Pits and decided to take a peak in the entrance even though I didn't have resist corrosion. Bad mistake. Two acid blobs were sitting in there waiting on me. I went back up the stairs, but one followed. I quaffed a heal wounds potion and felt a little better. No blink scrolls, but I figured hell I can out run a blob. I got a step on it, but that's when I found out it had ranged acid. RIP Frigid.
30365 Frigid the Frost Mage (level 13, 0/63 HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 10, 2011. Was a High Priest of Sif Muna. Killed from afar by an acid blob (6 damage) ... with a splash of acid ... on Level 6 of the Lair of Beasts. The game lasted 02:25:22 (28441 turns).

Nice Oz! But if you are 5th level you should be using the better ice spells. Hit Shift-M to memorize new spells as you level up. Throw Frost should be a staple by 5, and you should have Throw Icicle for big baddies.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. It's a rogue-like game, similar to Moria, Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) and others. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Pick it up, it's quickly addicting - I'm going through the tutorials just to brush up on my skills (it's been ages since I've played a rogue-like, and I was never any good anyway) before trying out the Ice Elementalist. |

So I'm running through the equipment/item/inventory whatever tutorial, and it has me pick up like a million meat rations. Then it says I can drop a certain number of them by entering the number after typing d. It's not letting me do that however. I've tried both the number pad and the traditional numbers above the keyboard, but no dice. Any ideas?
EDIT - It does work, I'm just quick. There's no indication that it has accepted your input as far as I can tell, but it works. Last edited by Vince, Pt. II : 08-11-2011 at 01:38 AM. |

Bluestar gets a little lucky on Level 2 of the dungeon-he barely survives being poisoned-had not found any potions, got to 2 hp before I overcame it. Then I was able to sneak into Crazy Yluf's lair and steal a glowing hammer from his lair-unfortunately he spotted me-I ran far from his lair then teleported when he was still following me-was able to escape a couple times when I encountered him further from his lair. Eventually I was able to sneak back in his lair and check out the hammers he loves so much. The only one that appears to be anything special is a hammer of draining. Now to sneak by him one more time to get the hell off this level.

And Bluestar1 is dead. got into a situation where monsters were coming from all directions and no easy way to get to a corridor. Luckily got into one taking little damage and thought for sure I was going to die right there-two cold resistant skeleton types, a hobgoblin, and kobold and something else I'm forgetting. Unbelievably I managed to survive and I hadn't found a single healing potion all game. The hammer of draining came through for me big time killing 4 out of the 5 mobs. But then Menkaure showed up right after I killed them, didn't have any choice to fight, spells werent doing much damage, but the hammer was-got her down to almost destroyed before succumbing.

Another one bites the dust.
Another one where confidence got the best of me. I had defeated several uniques and then ran into Rupert. He paralyzed me for 7 turns while he swung away and didn't do much damage. I nuked him pretty good right after coming out of being paralyzed, and he had only taken a bit of my health. I thought to myself I would nuke once more and finish him and if I didn't then I would blink away and nuke again. Well he berzerked and double hit me for my last 38 health. 37337 Frigid the Conjurer (level 13, -7/63 HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 11, 2011. Was a High Priest of Sif Muna. Mangled by Rupert ... wielding a +4,+5 great sword of protection (20 damage) ... on Level 14 of the Dungeon. The game lasted 02:50:10 (34638 turns).

Bluestar2 is doing well so far, and just found a artifact armor on Level 4! The problem is its Scale Armor which knocks my spell success down to Very Good, Good , and Very Poor for the armor spell. The thing is the armor is +4 INT, +4 STR, +3 Damage Dealing abilities (what exactly are those anyway?) It's just +0 unfortunately, but does bring my AC to 7, so if I wear it, I may not need the armor spell anyway. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...think I'm going to wear it for now and see how it goes.

Well I've made it to level 8.
Currently on the 6th level of the dungeon. I met up with "Prince Ribbit", and thankfully had the ability to cast the "Ozocubu's Armour" and then "Throw Icicle" at him, but in 2 turns he blinked right next to me. The Icicle spell wasn't hurting him very much, probably due to his very small size, so I just used a couple of blasts from my wand of flame. That brought his hit points down enough that I felt comfortable using "Freeze" on him til he died. Some where after that I came across a Book of Wizardry, can't recall where it came from unless Vehumet gifted it to me, I'll have to do a character dump and look through it to see. That +2, +2 whip of electrocution has saved me a few times, when some of the tougher monsters are able to with stand Throw Icicle, Throw Frost, and Freeze. I haven't used the "Summon Ice Beast" spell yet, but that was one of the spells in the book of wizardry I have. Hopefully I won't need it for a while, and when I do, I hope it comes in handy. I'll try it out a few times before I go to much further, just to see how well it helps. I've also added to my wand collection. I have 4 of them now. Wand of flame, wand of cold, wand of enslavement, and wand of FIREBALL!!! On top of that, I came across a rod of SMITING!! Those orc wizards better look out...pay back is a bitch. Then just before finishing the 6th level of the dungeon off, I come across a Quarterstaff named "Iluuzaos". It emits flame when wielded, adds +2 to my STR and +2 to my DEX. It insulates me from electricity, it protects me from poison, and it allows me to see invisible creatures. So my see invisibility ring is no longer needed and I'm wearing the ring of +3 STR, and the ring of sustenance. Hopefully that will help out hunger issues when casting spells. Considering how many times I died with this character build, I can say with the items I've found, and going slowly, this is a lot more fun than the troll berserker was. Great choice of character class to use Lonnie! Last edited by ozias : 08-12-2011 at 07:44 PM. |

Vince the Frost Mage is alive and kicking, going strong at the Ecumenical Temple. I thought he was done for early on, as three Jackals and a Hobgoblin had me surrounded in a big open room on level one, but the random potion that I quaffed with 1 hp left happened to be one of healing and it let me Freeze the hell out of all of them. A fortuitous find of a wand of disintegration has been amazing, as it's let me kill a pair of Orc Priests and an Orc Mage that otherwise would have easily done me in. I've killed three named mobs so far, Yluf, some fat half-orc and Terence. The closest I've been to death since that initial scare with the jackals was when I rounded a corner and bounced off an ogre's chest. One swipe of his giant club and I was down to 5 hp, but I managed to run away a bit and whittle him away with throw frost. Yluf dropped a pretty nice Quarterstaff of Chaos (+2, +3), but other than that and the wand of disintegration, nothing notable so far.
One question - I found an altar of Vehumet back on level 2, but it was surrounded by lava. I have no levitation abilities yet, and now I'm at the Ecumenical Temple. I had planned on picking Vehumet, but Sif Muna's got an altar here at the Temple - should I just go with Sif Muna, or hold out for potential levitation? Character dump after the spoiler tag.

Well that didn't end well. I ran into an Ice Beast on the 7th or 8th level, and needless to say was not very well equipped to handle him. Tried hitting him with my runed Sling Bullets of Flame, but they didn't really have much of an effect on him. He resisted a few zaps from the wand of disintegration, so I tried to run - got all the way back to level 3 and ran into Sigmund and a pack of Jackals. Started burning out all my scrolls, managed to confuse everything, kill Sigmund...and then the Ice Beast made it back before I could run away and it was goodnight Vince.
1,049 points for my first effort. Fairly lame. Time to get back to it! |

Vince,
Vehumet and Sif Muna are both good choices. If I couldn't get to the Vehumet altar then I would have went with Sif Muna. As far as the ice beast goes, if you couldn't get away from it then Throw Icicle would be the best spell since it is only 25% resistible. Since the ice beast is cold resistant it would be the best choice. Second choice would be slap it around with that staff of Chaos and hope a random teleport sent it across the dungeon.

Well I'm not dead yet, so there's the good thing.
I'm currently on level 3 of the lair, and came across a set of stairs that go down to the Shoals. What the heck is that, and should I even attempt it? Currently I'm level 11, and three potions of mutations have helped me out in a good way. I've got Clarity, can cover ground quickly, resistant to poison, +20% HP, Slow metabolism 1, and STR +1. I was almost dead when I gulped the first one, as I had no healing potions left and had no idea what the potions was, but since I had 3 of them, I figured I better try them to see if they could help me out....thankfully the wands of fire and cold finished off the baddies before I was killed. Then I just rested to heal up. That happened on the 8th level of the dungeon, and on the 9th level, I clicked the potion by mistake. Once in the Swamp, the fights got a little tougher and I had gone thru my supply of healing, I thought the potion I was taking was another healing, but I didn't read before clicking. Thankfully none of the mutations were bad. Here is where I stand now, next to the staircase to the Shoals, but wanted to find out about them before I head down there. So if you have any info, let me know, as I'll save this one for later.

Oz, you are doing well. I would skip the Shoals for now. Check the wiki here: The Shoals - CrawlWiki
Since you have poison resist, I would head back to the dungeon and find the Hive. Two levels of bees, you should be able to clear that easily. Then you'll have tons of honeycombs and royal jellies for food. Then head back to the Lair and clear it. Then tackle either the orcish mines or swamp. Clarity helps in the swamp as there are several things that can confuse you. My latest run ended with Harold shooting my with a fire wand while I was climbing the stairs to get away. Not any better than my previous attempts so I'll just post the header. 8484 Frigid the Frost Mage (level 11, -11/55 HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 13, 2011. Was an Elder of Sif Muna. Killed from afar by Harold (32 damage) ... with a bolt of fire ... on Level 11 of the Dungeon. The game lasted 01:11:19 (16844 turns). I was especially pissed as there were several good shops I had found and was just looking for enough gold for a poison resist ring and a robe of the arch magi.

Thanks for the input Lonnie.
I'll do as you suggest. Which of these spells should I memorize? Lightning bolt (great) Summon Elemental (good) Fireball (poor) Agony (terrible) Teleport Self (terrible) Haste (useless) Invisibility (useless) I can't see using that last 2 at this point in time, as they are useless to me. I'm thinking along the lines of lightning bolt, or summon elemental. I'm leaning more towards the elemental, as another one to help me out has to be a good thing. EDIT One other question, what the heck is the bone lantern for? I've been carrying it around for a while, but all I can tell that it does, is makes the light turn dark. Almost as if turning day into night. Last edited by ozias : 08-13-2011 at 08:38 PM. |

My latest guy had a really inauspicious start, being brought down to 1 hp by each of the first four mobs I fought. He's made quite the striking comeback and looks to be set up pretty well at the moment with some really nice items:
Ring of Teleport Control Ring of Teleportation Ring of Wizardry Amulet of Stasis Whip of Distortion Book of Chemistry Book of the Tempests I must have missed the temple, because I've been all the way down to level 9. Have gone back up and am re-exploring now, we'll see how things go. Also, I've already found a Ziggurat entrance guarded by some Angels on level 3 (behind translucent crystal walls) and another interestingly walled off section of green crystal behind another translucent wall on level 6. The second one has all sorts of scary looking monsters roaming around it, and I'm steering clear of both. Will I eventually be able to find a secret door for these, or will I have to come up with a random teleport in or a way to melt/dissolve/dig through the walls? Edit: Well, balls. Starving, I decided to try to take off the Whip of Distortion to cut up a corpse, and I was cast into the abyss. At level 7. I got whomped almost instantly by multiple abominations. 2,037, moving up in points. Last edited by Vince, Pt. II : 08-13-2011 at 09:01 PM. |

Out of those the best for long term use are Teleport Self and Haste, but you will have to level up that school of magic to be able to cast them reliably. For Teleport Self it would be good to find a book with Blink in it and level up translocations until Teleport Self is at great. Haste is in the Charm school.
I would wait until Vehumet gifts you a few more spell books and plan your spells around them. As an Ice Elementalist, your goal will be Ice Storm. I haven't ever actually used a bone lantern, so I don't know exactly how useful it can be. Here is the wiki entry: Lantern of shadows - CrawlWiki

Any ideas what to do with really nice items you find that are pretty much useless to you? Last game I found some Artifact gloves of +3 Dex/-4 Int, and I didn't know if I could do anything with them.

Vince - no use hanging on to them. You can create a stash in the Temple or Lair to dump extra stuff if you think you'll use it later.
My latest run. Seems like I have a knack of lasting a little over two hours. Lesson learned here is if you are an ice mage don't go into the ice caves. Ice Dragons did me in, my wand of fire ran out. 30255 Frigid the Gelid (level 13, -22/56 HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 14, 2011. Was the Champion of Sif Muna. Killed from afar by an ice dragon (29 damage) ... with a blast of cold ... in an ice cave. The game lasted 02:12:58 (25813 turns).

ack I wouldn't have even gone in a ice cave no matter how many wands of flame I had
Bluestar2 soldiers on, having just avoided Pikel and all but one of his slaves, the lovers D&D, and my killer of Bluestar1 Menakure, all on the same level. Hopefully I can keep avoiding the uniques. Just found my first spellbook, a poison one, I can now poison weapon my dagger of electrocution. And I had to take that nice artifact armor after a while, just made spellcasting too hard. I'm definitely holding on to it though. |

Okay Lonnie (or whomever)
I've found a ring of ice (which I've had for a long time and just ID'ed), a ring of magical power, and a ring of INT+3. Which of the two would you wear? Mana is 25 without ring of magical power, 34 with it. |

And now you can add a ring of wizardry to that list, its a magical ring bonanza!

I finally had another game where I made it through a few levels and then died to an ice beast. I had leveled up high enough to where I could summon my own but the real thing was much better. I am just not getting any kind of luck as far as finding wands of fire and that kind of thing, I'm still in a situation where if i can't kill it with my spells or run to the nearest stairs w/o it catching up, I am dead, basically every time. I think my best score is an 1100 or so so far.

yeah radii, I've had to count on my poisoned dagger of electrocution to fight cold resistant things, trying to throw darts first to soften it up first

I just had to drop an artifact short sword that did flame damage and +4 STR because it unfortunately prevented spellcasting. I've also found an artifact amulet that gives me +4 to AC and EV and something I won't know till I ID it.

I would use the ring of magical power and the ring of ice. Ring of wizardry increases the success of your spells, where ring of ice increases the power of the spells. If your spells are already at excellent then I would stick with the ring of ice. You always want the extra mana though so ring of magical power for sure.
