Domain Name Registration
Any suggestions for a good registrar? I'm finally taking control of my two domains after years of letting the hosting provider handle them. They are currently with ENom (via LiquidWeb), not sure if I can just leave it with them but manage it myself. I tried moving them to Network Solutions, but they seem to be the ONLY company that can't charge the credit card I use for Internet stuff, even though they somehow managed to get a $1 hold charge on there. They don't seem to agree that if that hold got on, and my bank shows no other attempts to charge the card, something is broken on THEIR end, so I guess I get to try someone else. GoDaddy might be another option, except that the advertising method they use gives me little faith in them as an actual company I'd trust money with. Is anyone else out there trustworthy and reputable enough to handle domains?

GoDaddy in the past has taken it upon themselves to shut down questionable sites. Deserved or not, I don't think that's their role so I moved off them to NetSol.

I had a similar reluctance about GoDaddy for the same reason, but they've been nothing but reliable for me the past several years. Between personal and a surprising bit of business (clients asking us to secure domains on their behalf) I've probably managed 50 different domains with them & never had a problem.
Their phone support, if you run into some odd situation or question, is also way above average in my experience.

I use namecheap.com I have used for the past 5 years now and I haven't had any issues and their security has been solid.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into some of these.
Still can't believe the support folks can't get it through their head that the problem is on THEIR end. They won't even try or dig into it.

Do not under ANY circumstances use GODaddy if you want to control your own DNS. Their system is so F(**&ing annoying

I register my domains with Godaddy simply because I like having all of my domains in the same place and I started with them years ago. They're the cheapest to register because they always have promo codes that discount domain prices, but I never host through them.
The advertising enables cheap domains, so I'd suggest them for a good deal because you can't beat it especially if you host your own sites anyway. As a sidenote, I used namecheap for Rails VPS hosting a few years ago for a project and they were totally great. But if we're just talking about domain registration, godaddy is perfectly fine and will save you money. |
