Hinojosa Cops 400th Save, Plantana Tops Mullets 6-3
Wednesday, June 28th, 2073: "I tried to approach this game like it was just another day, but when I walked out there on the mound, it was different." It certainly was different. The Plantana star reliever José Hinojosa was about to try for his milestone 400-th career save and put his name in the record book. "I'm supposed to have ice water in my veins, but not today. It felt like my first day on the mound in my rookie season." But as he has endless times before, Hinojosa rose to the occasion and disposed of the Oshawa Mullets and saved the Pirates 6-3 victory for his historic 400-th save, allowing no runs and no hits in 1 innings of work.

Hinojosa has registered 400 saves in his career with a 61-46 record and a 1.73 ERA.

I'm 18-8 in 1-run games yet am 11 games under .500? I've never seen anything like that.

My experience is that 1-run games and to some extent Pythagorean Record says more about how strong your bullpen is rather than how strong the overall team is.

My guess without looking at your team is with that difference, you have a good bullpen and below average rest of the team

Oh, my rotation is mediocre at best, while my bullpen is strong. I agree with you.

Rodríguez Whiffs 15, Stafford Tops Havana
Wednesday, July 26th, 2073: It was a very special game for Sergio Rodríguez today at Constitution Plaza in Stafford. He had the perfect delivery. The good fastball. The nasty curve. The batters mumbling and muttering when they swung and missed. And when he needed a strikeout, he got it. In an unforgettable performance the 24-year-old Rodríguez fanned 15 strikeouts Banana Sluggers and sparked the Stafford Terriers to a 4-0 victory over Havana.

His catcher commented, "I don't think I have seen him throw better. His location and command were really something."

In addition to his 15 strikeouts, Johnson allowed 3 hits and 2 walks in a superlative outing.

His manager added, "It's a manager's day off when you get pitching like that."

The Havana skipper had no comment that was printable in the newspaper.

On the year Rodríguez has worked 144 innings with 118 strikeouts en route to a 8-6 record and 3.31 ERA.

I wonder if it is related that the CL has also won 3 of the last 4 seasons, with the only RL win coming in a tough 9 game series last season.

Las Vegas Starter Wins August's Pitcher Award
Friday, September 1st, 2073: Las Vegas Wildcats starter Mike Jackson has collected the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award for a run of lights-out performances.

"This town really appreciates it when you're going well," said Jackson. "They might boo you when you're getting knocked around, but they love you when you're mowin' them down."

In August the 33-year-old compiled a 5-0 record in 6 starts with a 2.65 ERA. He threw 37.1 innings, fanning 23 while walking 11.

In 27 starts this season Jackson has compiled a 15-6 record and a 2.47 ERA.

Plantana's Relief Ace Top Pitcher in August
Friday, September 1st, 2073: José Hinojosa has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in August and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Pirates bullpen ace collected 4 saves and 13 strikeouts in 10.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .194 average and posting a 2.53 ERA and a 4-0 record.

This season Hinojosa has 26 saves with a 6-3 mark and 2.01 ERA.

Ronald Lawson Selected August's Best Batter
Friday, September 1st, 2073: Ronald Lawson, the Cleveland Naps third baseman, certainly made his name known to Republic League hurlers over the last month. He consistently introduced himself with hit after hit and came away with August's Republic League Batter of the Month award.

He slashed and bashed his way to a .405 batting average while tallying up 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He also worked RL pitchers for 5 walks and a .442 on-base percentage.

So far this year Lawson is batting .298 with 14 home runs, 79 RBIs and 77 runs scored.

Continental League Selects August's Best Batter

Jones Picked RL's Premier Rookie
Friday, September 1st, 2073: In August Reed Jones put up award-winning numbers, batting his way to a Rookie of the Month award in the Republic League.

The Waikiki designated hitter stroked 36 hits as he compiled a .330 average with 4 home runs and 18 RBIs.

Jones is hitting .218 so far this season with 57 RBIs and 50 runs scored. He has 109 hits including 16 home runs, 46 walks and .292 OBP.

August's Best Rookie Named by CL
Friday, September 1st, 2073: John Neely is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In August the Havana hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .364 average with 20 hits, 4 home runs and 12 RBIs.

Looking at his present stats, Neely has compiled a .294 batting average in 93 games with a .331 on-base percentage, while hitting 16 home runs and driving in 61 runs.

Number 3000 for Connor
Wednesday, September 20th, 2073: The Stafford contest with London featured a real shining moment: Ben Connor, the Terriers left fielder, collected career base hit #3000. That his team lost the game, 6-5, took away only a little bit of the luster. Fittingly, the 38-year-old Connor, who went 2-for-4, received a warm ovation from the The Cathedral crowd.

Connor's all-time stats include: 3000 hits, 558 doubles, 114 triples, 428 home runs and 1543 RBIs in 2575 games. He is batting .292 with 452 stolen bases and has scored 1760 runs.
