My sincere condolences to the entire Bulldog Nation on the loss of an irreplaceable icon. Although I know he was much more to his fans, as a broadcaster, what he represented was something that I doubt we'll ever see the likes of again, an honest & enduring master of his craft.

Rest In Peace Larry, you earned it many times over.

I posted this several years ago. I think most GT fans have a soft spot for Larry.

And I suspect most have a favorite Munson call. Even if it is, "They're running all over us like we're Wake Forest or Maryland or somebody." from the 2000 game.

From Mark Bradley's column in the AJC

Quote:
To listen to Cawood Ledford, the greatest pure play-by-play man who ever lived, call a Kentucky game was to hear talent and craftsmanship over the airwaves. To hear Munson at work was to be bombarded by the sheer depth of feeling for what he was witnessing. When the famous Memphis record man Sam Phillips first heard the blues singer Howlin’ Wolf on the radio, Phillips is said to have said: “This is where the soul of man never dies.”

Heh. I never really thought about it, but I would imagine that, given Munson's tendency toward being a doomsayer, he would be a pretty entertaining announcer to hear for the opposition when the opposition was really laying the wood to the Dawgs.

I actually have two old cassette tapes on the 80 Clemson - UGA game from opposing radio stations One with Jim Philips and the other with Larry Munson.

ROFL.

I'm not a big fan of Mark Bradley, but he NAILED this one.

UGA versus LSU, as the mighty Munson might have called it | Mark Bradley
