I met him at a Football awards banquet prior to WV playing Oklahoma in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl.
I have seldom met somebody so positive and so full of life. Listening to him speak you could see the passion he had for his players and for life. Definitely one of the nicest College coaches I have ever met, talked to you like you were a childhood friend. 59 is too damn young!!! RIP Coach, the game lost a great man today!! |

Always seemed like a guy who was too nice and loyal to be a coach at a big time school. Very sad.

He was a super nice guy and I'm not sure folks realize how much his leadership helped stabilize our program after Rich Rod left. First, we lost our final game of the year and a guaranteed opportunity to play in the BCS championship to a sub-.500 team and then our alumnus head coach inexplicably left for another job. Winning that Fiesta Bowl over Oklahoma was so huge for us.
I only met him once and, oddly enough, it was the day that his settlement was finalized. He was really personable and even joked about losing his job, even though he had just lost his dream job (of course, he made about $2-million that day). I hate that he didn't get the time or opportunity to heal the wounds from his departure. Today, I have heard so many stories about the nice things he did for those in need. I really feel for his family. Here is his legendary (at least around here) pre game speech prior to the Fiesta Bowl: |

This hit pretty hard today. I'm still kind of in shock over it. There had been rumors that he was looking at getting back into coaching if the right job came along and I honestly believe a non-BCS team would have a difficult time finding a better person to hire. He would have a lot of success at a CUSA or MAC type school.
He is and always will be a legend among WVU fans. I've never seen a bad thing written or a heard a bad thing said about coach Stew as a person from Mountaineer fans. Some people may remember the way he was forced out of his dream job more than anything else, but the amount of respect that man has from people in West Virginia isn't surpassed by many. Scott Van Pelt from ESPN is a Maryland grad that enjoys interacting with the WVU fans and often has WVU coaches on his show. Listening to him report Stew's death today was tough to listen to. You could tell it shook him up. There may not be another person out there like Bill Stewart. RIP Coach Stew. You'll be missed. |

Met him a few times when I worked some scrimmages at WVU. Always took time to talk to us, ask us how we were, and thank us for working the scrimmage/practice. I wish more coaches had the class he did.
