2013 NFL Draft: Matt Barkley 1st Overall?

Is it too early to talk 2013 NFL Draft yet? Yes it is. But I thought I would do so anyway as it could be somewhat interesting at the top this year.

At this point, from what I've heard, Barkley is a fairly consensus #1. Obviously though, things can change.

What makes this interesting though is that it seems that most of the teams likely to finish at the bottom have QB's drafted in the first round within the past two years. Will this be the fastest a team has ever given up on a first round QB?

Take a look at the teams that could wind up #1 with a fairly recent first rounder on the roster - Cleveland, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Miami, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Carolina, Washington, Minnesota (although they've been impressive so far). I think New Orleans turns it around at some time but I don't see them replacing Brees.

So, that leaves Kansas City and Oakland as the only teams that don't really have their "future QB". I could also see the Jets going into a downward spiral without Revis and they likely would bite at Barkley.

So what do you think, does Barkley go first overall? Which of the aforementioned teams are willing to cut bait and start over at QB?

As a USC fan, he shouldn't. At least with the new draft contract slotting he's not as big a risk as he would have been a few years back but still, I don't see a big time franchise QB. A lot of his success last year was down to Woods and Lee making unbelievable plays IMO, and you've seen what has happened this year so far as teams realized that

Jacksonville could easily take a QB #1 again. Philly won't be bad enough to pick early, but could use a QB. I could see that type of move. Tampa might move on from Josh Freeman. The Bills could be bad enough, certainly need a QB. Hell, STL could just decide to cut bait on Bradford too...they have 2 #1s and Bradford is owed a shit ton of money going forward, probably 2x the cash they would have to pay Barkley.

I'm really not impressed with Barkley. So he will, without a doubt, go on to be a superstar in the NFL.

The Rams will trade Bradford to the Bills, and take Barkley. They'll throw an extra 10M(Minus whatever Offset in his new contract) dead money on their 2013 cap, but will avoid paying him 27M for 2014/15. Barkley will make 23M Total in 2013-16. That's my call.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Kolton Browning comes out early and goes before Barkley.

Geno Smith will probably assume the No. 1 QB slot at some point this season. Logan Thomas and Tyler Bray will probably play their way into some hype to come out early.

Unless Tyler Wilson comes back and hauls Arkansas out of the trash, I don't see a consensus No. 1 quarterback this year. I think this is going to be a pretty deep year for defense at the top of the draft and pretty weak at QB.

If the Chiefs had a top 5 pick right now, I'd take Jarvis Jones in the first round and look to see if anyone slips like Andy Dalton. If not, I'd take a flier on a Landry Jones or Zac Dysert in the third round.

Keith Price? Eh, highest I've seen him is 2nd round, but he's not lighting it up either and most would say he's probably not in the top 6 of PAC-12 QB's at the moment

USC will have to beat Oregon before I think Barkley should really get talked about going #1.

Because he would have to play well, which he hasn't exactly been doing so far. It puts them back into title race and another opportunity to play against a higher caliber team. If he comes back and can't even lead his team to the title game let alone the Rose Bowl, then I think his stock as a QB has to take a serious hit. If he gets past his earlier issues and leads his team to the title, then that shows something positive about him.

He has the measurables and the talent. He'll perform well in the combine, if he chooses to participate

All of that is physical related stuff. I want to know his mental makeup.

When does mental makeup affect a QB? The league has a hardon for QB's with physical gifts

The QB that is likely to blow people away at the Combine and in workouts is Tyler Bray. You don't see many QBs that throw the ball like he does. He's similar to Ryan Mallett, though. If he's pressured his accuracy and decision making go to shit.

I'm a huge fan of Geno Smith and I think he's worthy of a top 10 pick. His arm strength is very good, but not top 5 in the NFL strong like Bray. His pocket awareness and ability to move within the pocket are off the charts though. He's also very good at going through his progressions and taking what the defense gives him. His improvements in making the right reads before the snap and picking up the blitz are the big differences this year.

IMO Logan Thomas is not anything close to an NFL QB at this point. He may develop into one, but he has miles to go. Right now he's a big guy with a strong arm playing the quarterback position.

Outside of injury, the only thing that could probably keep Barkley from being the number 1 pick is if he ends up measuring closer to 6'1" than 6'2". His height could be a concern for NFL teams if he's a bit shorter than his listed height.

I think if we see Barkley struggle again the next time he faces serious pressure (like the Stanford game), he'll start falling even more.

I can't understand the hype around Logan Thomas -- he's barely completing 50% of his passes through 4 games. I know he is a freakish, physical specimen, but if I'm an NFL GM, I'm not taking a guy who has no track record of completing more than 60-65% of his passes.

Maybe he comes back next season and puts it all together.

As for Barkley, I still think he'll be a very good NFL QB. He's been ridiculously productive when you consider that he has a dipshit for a head coach. If he had been playing for a legitimate coach, I think he'd be off the charts.

It's not always just the content of the joke that makes it funny. It's also the delivery. You nailed this. Perfect level of understatement. Great job.

I'm talking about first-round caliber quarterbacks who slip to the second round such as Andy Dalton did.

You mean the one that went 11 for 26 against...Bowling Green? That's awful but I guess typical of VT QBs.
