Looks like I start with a band I didn't know was still around anymore (Pere Ubu), and a band I know is not around anymore (Broadcast).

Thanks for the list again, not much on it i really have on my list (no wonder since basically all my favourite acts have released sth in 2012), but i´ll try to check some of it out
One thing i´m looking forward to is Olafur Arnalds. Propably not sth many will listen to here, but i think the guy is pretty much a genius and almost everything he does (save for those weird collaborations with Nils Frahm) reasonates with me. two older song of his as well for reference : (both with pretty cool videos as well)

Going back to some older songs in my collection. I forgot how funky The Stone Roses were. This song is a damn good earworm.

Not sure how much I'll actually be listening to this one myself but since this thread seems to get a fair bit of attention from our harder core musicophiles I'll put this here.
New music from Prince. Sounds like a more laid back version of his earliest work, at least to my ears. I wouldn't call it great but at the same time, how many artists could actually get away with a line like "I'm your driver, you're my screw" and have it not be too cheesy? edited to update: video I linked to was removed due to a copyright claim from "Controversy Music" ... which is kinda peculiar since it appeared to have been coming from the "unofficial official" site for Prince's new bad. Not sure if that's some sort of publicity gimmick or if there was indeed something odd going on there.

New My Bloody Valentine album is streaming on Youtube and available on their website. Their first album in 20 years. It's pretty much right on the edge of my musical taste.

I'd never heard of My Bloody Valentine, but all the hype has my interest piqued. Guess I'll try to stream it when I'm in the mood to listen to music...
I just bought the album "Thirteen Orphans" from Stenobot on the recommendation of someone I follow on Twitter. Haven't listened to it yet but I'm pretty intrigued by the descriptions (and the recommendation from the dude on Twitter since I've had good recs from him before). Stenobot /tk

Here's a whole 2013 running Spotify playlist of interesting albums, in case you're into that.
Favorite song so far this year is Nine of Arrows by Color of Clouds Bad Religion's new album True North is solid. But the best album I've heard so far is We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic from Foxygen: |

Little Ugly was named Best Band in CT in 2011, and are getting a bigger following with each show. They're four music teachers up in Hartford...folkish rock, mainly...two incredible singers. They're quite good.
You can get a free download of their single, "And We Said", here: And We Said... | Little Ugly Here's a poor audio version of their cover of You Oughta Know (I need to tape their next show, somehow): Little Ugly 1.25.13 - You Oughta Know - YouTube |

Unknown Mortal Orchestra released II this month. I almost like it more than the Foxygen album, because it's a bit more chilled out. But so so so so good.

I'm not listening to the band nor the song that much but the video for the new Soundgarden single literally made me LOL more than once.
Considering that I'm not really a big fan of Soundgarden, nor of video director Dave Grohl, I figure that's worth a post in the ol' music thread

I finally got a chance to listen to these. I listened to whatever 70s Pere Ubu I could find on Spotify, then the new album. The new album was more like their 70s stuff than the 90s stuff I'm more familiar with, but it was good. And I may have been wrong about Broadcast -- they might be going on despite the death of their lead singer in 2011. This album is the soundtrack to a horror film, so not quite as accessible (or as good) as their more "normal" albums. Last edited by Passacaglia : 02-13-2013 at 10:00 AM. |

If every track on the upcoming covers EP turns out like this one, it could be pretty interesting.
Article, with comments from the band & tracklisting, about the project

Dawn Richard's album is getting hype in the Janelle Monae/Frank Ocean-esque half-R&B category... I don't think it's quite as good as either, but definitely better than anything I'd expect from a member of Puff Daddy's girl group

Dave Grohl recently released his directorial debut, the documentary Sound City: Real To Reel. It’s about Sound City, the now-defunct studio where Nirvana made Nevermind; Grohl recently bought the studio and recruited a bunch of fellow luminaries for a fantasy-camp all-star recording session, and the result is the movie’s new soundtrack album. Grohl famously recruited Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana for “Cut Me Some Slack,” but the album also has contributions from Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, and terrifying Fear frontman Lee Ving, among others. Stream the whole thing below.

If you remember Little Caesar from their 1990 cover of Chain of Fools ... this ain't that song
What I've heard of the new album has some different stuff on it but this cut is solid bluesy rock with a bit of southern twang. Just a solid rock song. And a video that's got an Oh Brother, Where Art Thou feel to it.

The newest track from Volbeat is a f'n monster. For as lukewarm as I was about the first single (?) "Cape of the Hero", I'm completely jacked up for the cut that Sirius Octane & apparently quite a few other stations have jumped on instead. "Hangman's Body Count" debuted at #29 on the Active Rock chart this week. Unlike "Cape", the influence of Rob Caggiano (ex-Anthrax) is very clear here. And most welcome.
This is a poor quality rip of the Octane stream somebody did, but it's better quality than the live versions out there at the moment.
