March Madness Starting Ten (2014)

PAST RESULTS:
2012 (Starting Eight)
2013

Here's the premise:

1. You pick a roster of any 10 players from the NCAA tournament field.
2. You score as many points as each of your drafted players scores in the NCAA tournament.
3. You get a multiplier for the seed of his team. (i.e. if Nate Wolters of 14th seeded South Dakota State scores 18 points, you would earn 252 points.)
4. "First Four"/play-in round games do not count towards the players point total.
5. Deadline is tip-off of the first games on Thursday.
6. There's a multiplier to each round the player scores points in.

Quote:
So the 1st round (of 64) is just x1, each round after adds a x1 so:

Round of 32: x2
Sweet 16: x3
Elite 8: x4
Final 4: x5
Championship: x6

So if you have a guy who is a 1 seed who scores 20 points in the sweet 16, it'd be worth 60 points. If he's was on a 2-seed team that'd be 120 points and so forth. If you pick this year's VCU and manage to get them to the Final Four? Jackpot. But what's nice is, a 18 point game from a 3-seed in the Elite 8 is worth 216 points (18 x 3 x 4) which will make up a lot of ground from the guy who scored 288 points for his 16-seed who had a guy scoring 18 points in their one-and-done game. Make sense?

There is no draft, you just pick a roster of 10 players that you want. Make any changes you want up through the deadline, any edits after that will not be counted.

Have at it.

I will definitely be in, but want to give it a couple of days for injury updates and such.

Initial thoughts:
I have an inkling that this is too conservative a set. Then again, I don't have anybody from a 1- or 2-seed.

Edited out, for posterity's sake:
Jordan Adams, UCLA
Marcus Paige, North Carolina

Contingency:
If Tennessee loses in tonight's play-in, I'll probably substitute McRae with either Jahii Carson or Roy Devyn Marble. If Tennessee wins, I'll consider swapping out Gary Harris, instead.

I was incredibly torn between Kilpatrick, Harris and Marcus Smart. I wanted to pick only one of Kilpatrick and Harris...but I just can't see OK State getting past Arizona in the second round.

Too many swings and misses early. It's brutal that NC State and St. Joe's were so close to moving on.

Correction: Devin Oliver of Dayton not in bold, but should be.

My scoring following similarly to last year, but a little worse. I think I was ahead until late last year also, probably will be giving up the lead earlier than I hoped this year thanks to the tight losses by Providence, St. Joe's, and NC State. I also thought for sure Oklahoma State would beat Gonzaga. Alas.

Thanks to beckerinski (who is a real life friend of mine who I roped into the game..) we have a spreadsheet that actually shows who has who, so you can see if there are repeaters as we get further down into the tournament.

Here's the link (since we can't embed)

I may be near the top, but all my lower seed players got bounced so I expect a free fall the next two days.

Mistake, I've fixed it. Good catch. I sometimes like to do in-game scoring and that was a mistake when I don't go back to fix.

Should've picked Napier. I had UConn in the sweet sixteen.

Yeah I'm kicking myself for taking him off my updated list. No real hurt to that, but I did think they'd lose earlier than they did.

And the rare forays he makes outside of the chalk--McRae, Young--have worked or are continuing to work.

Strategically speaking, I feel like anyone on a 1 or a 2 seed is a wasted pick in a game like this. Let's assume that your potential 2 seed team makes the championship game. He gets the exact same multiplier as a 12 seed does in his one game, or a 3 seed in two games. The sweet spot for seed multiplier plus round advancement seems to be in the 4-7 range.

Edit: I also feel like a guy like McDermott you simply can't leave off your team, even though he wasn't worth all that much this go around. You're just completely screwed if he goes off and you don't have him.

When trying to win a large field competition, contrarian often times gives you the best odds of winning.
