Lyrics puzzle

So, just today, I was listening to a song that I like a bit. I heard a lyric and decided to google the specific phrase. Ended up, instead, learning something new dating back to my old days of console gaming. Hey, how about that.

What song was I listening to?

Sort of lost at where to start.

Does the lyric relate to console gaming? Or just the time period? I'm guessing we're talking about NES days. Super Mario? Zelda? Contra?

Music genre could be anything as well? Rap lyric?

This was meant to be a clue:

What I want you to get from it is that I had no idea my google search would turn up anything to do with console gaming. Admittedly, it was a pretty generic phrase, and could have turned up any number of things beyond just the song (I was kinda lazy about it). But this week, it brought up...this.

And...oh, what the heck, NES.

My serious guess:

"In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, when you searched brought up a reference to Mike Tyson's sing-along from The Hangover, which then brought up the recently discovered Easter Egg about the one punch knockout clue in Mike Tyson's Punchout on the NES.

edit: Or, the song also could have been Eminem's 'Stan', with the same logic applied because you searched on the lyrics that mentioned 'In the Air Tonight'

was just coming to post this too. Not sure if the "instead" clue fits but it was my first thought.

I thought of that too, but it doesn't really fit "generic phrase".

"instead" would fit perfectly here. Listening to the lyrics and hearing "up up down down left right... " would trigger a visit to Google.

But instead of finding the lyric in question, he learns about the secret code that he had no idea existed.

"up up down down" seems to be generic enough to the uninitiated, I would think. Like a dance move... "to the left, to the left, to the right, to the right..."

That's a great guess... probably better than my original answer.

New hint: this puzzle wouldn't have worked at all a week ago. And in a month, it will be much much harder to solve.

Having googled NES in google news, I see that some Texas company decided to make a real gun in the style of the Duck Hunt gun. No idea what lyric could possibly result in that popping up.

It's the latter article that came up - though I got several articles with a slightly different headline.

Does it have to do with the Reddit name "midwesternhousewives"?

Anything in post #6 of this thread that matches?

Ding. Full credit.

Actually, I was listening to another song of theirs, Slow Show, but they deliberately borrow one of their own older lines in that song. I am not a huge huge fan, but I went to look up where else they use that lyric... and ended up with a new easter egg for Punch Out.

Yes, yes, I know this was hard without the hints. Sorry about that. It's a lot easier to give too little and have to drop a few extra bread crumbs then to give up too much and ruin the puzzle immediately.

yeah i was honing in on the word instead. was confusing.

So the phrase you wanted to look up was not actually what google gave you but instead something CLOSE to that that is NES was related.

i was thinking about nes and atari when you said that.

Just to be clear... the song lyric was "29 years" and when I googled that exact phrase, I was hit with the story about NES Punch out, where most headlines noted specifically that the game was 29 years old (not "nearly 30" as the one above).
