Wow. I remember watching his teams as a kid with my grandfather. So many great memories. RIP.

Is it even a stretch to say that never in the history of American sports have 2 better coaches passed so close together

Watching that 30 for 30 on the 1985 Bears was heartbreaking seeing the condition Buddy was in. One helluva of a coach, RIP.

The two worst days of my childhood fandom were the day Mike Schmidt retired and the day they fired Buddy Ryan. At least he's not in pain anymore.

I was living in the Chicago area during the 1985 season. The way that team, and especially the defense, captivated the town was unlike anything I've ever experienced before or since. He may have been a jerk, but that was one of the best years of my life, and I'll always have a soft spot for him.

I stole this play from him and used it successfully one game a few years ago.

Haha, awesome.

We have a "polish" punt play for when we are ahead by 3-7 points and punting inside our 20 at the end of the game (under 20 seconds). We will intentionally tackle their edge rusher(s), giving our more punter time to run back into the endzone to that side and then step out for the safety, avoiding the block or a big return.

The theory is the other coach will take the penalty and try to block it again, rather than decline and take the free kick. We have done it once in all the time I have coached and sure enough, the other team took the penalty, we lined up again to punt with 4 seconds left and ran out the clock before stepping out to take a safety again.

Totally missed this thread. And, like you, I had watched that 30 for 30 recently and I had mixed feelings on this. It was heartbreaking when it came to his condition, but it was very uplifting to see how many former players showed how much they cared for him. I can't lie that the ending had me a bit misty eyed.

Oh for sure, when they read that letter I lost it.
