2016-17 NFL Coaching Carousel/ Offseason Thread

A bit crass to start a thread about coaches losing their jobs ob Christmas day BUT...

Here is the link for possible candidates for current/future openings.

2017 NFL Head Coaching Candidates: The Best Fits For Every Team | FOX Sports

I am not buying Todd Bowles losing his job but the potential of having Todd Haley as head coach with the Jets is appealing .

Also, I am struggling to see Mike Shula as an NFL head coach candidate.

EDIT: Nope, I did not proofread the title before now

LOL. UCLA fans are desperately hoping for someone to take him off their hands, but his star is as low as it has been in years.

People I don't want for the Jags include: Any Ryan, Josh McD, Jeff Fisher. John Fox.

Who would I think is okay?

Tom Coughlin.

Mike Smith ain't bad. He left the Jags for the Falcons originally, knows the team and area. But he doesn;t move my radar. Ditto Marrone.

LOL. Usc fans suddenly showing up after hiding under a rock for years.

Mora is fine but wants to be in the NFL. I'd like to see him there too as that's where his heart longs for.

I can't explain it but I feel like Josh McDaniels would be an intriguing choice. It would have to be the right circumstances though. Strong front office structure so he gets no ideas about acquiring personnel power. A strong D-coordinator who is confident enough to tell him to he can visit the defensive meetings but not much else. Somewhere sort of like... Denver. I am not saying that Denver should fire Kubiak and hire McDaniels. I just think those parameters would put him in a position to succeed.

If there were other issues in Denver that I am aware of, I am sure someone will bring them up. I just think he was given too much too soon the first time around.

McDaniels back in Denver? While I would get a crack out of seeing that happen, of course there is no way they would bring him back.

The 49ers are the first team in 30 years to fire one-and-done coaches in consecutive years (according to a Peter King tweet).

Remember when the 49ers went to three NFC championship games and a Super Bowl in 4 years and fired the head coach?

Ted Thompson may be stepping aside so that the Packers can promote Elliot Wolf. My guess is that Wolf leaves if Thompson doesn't step aside.

I wouldn't count out Kyle Shanahan. Of course he also grew up in Mile High stadium. He may be young, but I would bet he gets a job somewhere this season.

It does seem there are more interesting coaching candidates this year than last. As I recall, only Adam Gase and Hue Jackson were considered "hot" candidates.

Rumors in Denver have Joseph as the leading guy for Broncos HC job followed by Kyle Shanahan.

I think Faneca deserves it, Boselli just didn't play long enough to me.

Great player, but just too few years. I think he'll need a weaker year or a veteran's committee vote, but then again I also don't think Terrelle Davis should be in.

I hope Ty Law makes it. Best player on the 01-04 Patriots dynasty.

I think Boselli makes it next year. Not this one. He was one of the GOAT at his position at a time of tremendous talent at that position. He's like the opposite of Fred Taylor. Taylor was a long career, bunch of yards and carries and such, has the stats, has teh longevity, but was overshadowed at any given point in time by the many great runners in the NFL. At no point in time in Taylor's career could I, even as a Jags fan, say Fred Taylor is the best RB in football. I could maybe make an argument for Top 5, and the back half of that. Boselli is the opposite. Was just dominant while he played, injury cut it short, but no question in talent, or game playing.

My immediate thought on Boselli and Davis is not enough years.

I feel like LT, Warner, Bruce, Jacoby, and Law stick out above the rest with good arguments to me made about Faneca, Mawae, Coryell, and both Dawkins and Lynch.

Seems like a strong year.

Redskins clean out the defensive staff, getting rid of Barry, Fewell, and Akey. I would hope nobody hired Joe Barry as their DC again. He's been terrible in two places now.

WOW.
All Time?

I dont think I'd have him in the Top 20, tbh. Without starting to list them out I'm not sure he is top 50. And I'm talking just specifically Offensive Left Tackles....and I'm a huge Bosseli fan. Never thought I'd see him referenced as a GOAT. He was best known for being the #1 pick IMHO

I think the video makes a bigger difference than even the conviction of Hill. This is a deep RB class and Mixon could slide all the way out of the draft.

The video makes it worse, but Mixon is also going to have a higher draft grade than Hill did. NFL teams seem to be willing to give 2nd chances as long as whatever happened didn't happen on their watch.

I actually don't think the video makes it worse at all. When I see what Mixon did Vs What I hear Hill did, I'd much rather have Mixon. Talent being equal of course, which it isn't.

Ray Rice would probably disagree. For the average NFL fan I'd bet it's out of sight out of mind.

I do agree that it not being on the teams watch probably makes a big difference. Plus any time I saw a Sooners game this year the redemption angle was being pushed

Yeah, but Ray Rice went from nothing to gone simply with video. A lot of people need to have the physical evidence and not just something written down before they get outraged. The chants at the Sugar Bowl probably got the attention of NFL scouts.

Ray Rice was also averaging under four yards per carry. If he was productive I'm sure he would have gotten a job.

If Ray Rice had still been a productive back he would have gotten a look somewhere. Instead he was coming off a year where he averaged 3.1 yards per carry, 5.5 per catch, and looked slow and finished.

It's easy to take the moral high ground when it's unproductive player.

True, but I also feel the landscape of fan tolerance has continued shifting strongly against forgiving something like this when there's video proof.

I actually agree - a big time D coach in Washington could do a world of difference for this roster. Not sure Rex would go do that, but I'd call him to ask.

Chip Kelly going to OC under Belichick could be a special kind of awesome, too.

Gruden is definitely regretting his choice of Barry over Wade Phillips. Of course, if Vance Joseph gets the Broncos job it's rumored that Phillips will be available again. That would go a long way towards determining if it was the talent or the coach in Washington.

I think that Peter King had the best advice for Chip Kelly. He needs to take a year off to figure out why all of the front office people for whom he has worked end up hating him so much.

Kelly as an OC with no say in personnel for a defensive-minded head coach who will let him do his thing? I'd sign up for that. I think he could thrive in that role.
