Mario Lemiex may...

give up his ownership in the Penguins to play for either the Philadelphia Flyers or New York Rangers. That was reported this morning on WTAE TV, the ABC Affilate in Pittsburgh. Come on Mario go to the Flyers!!

This is just dumb. If he wants to come back and play for someone other than the Penguins, that's great. But why only the Flyers or Rangers?

The Flyers make sense. They're close to home, it's a good team with a chance to win next year, they can pay him, etc. But why the Rangers? New York is a mess, the place where star players go to die. It's long been a running joke that New York is the destination of choice for players who only care about money (and having their full summers off).

I can understand him not wanting to go to Columbus for his final season. But there are other big-market teams that would be a good fit. Why not Toronto? Why not Detroit? Hell, even Montreal would love to bring the home-town hero back, and they'd probably hand him the GM's job after the season.

Is Lemieux really just in it for the money? Say it ain't so, Mario!

Why those two teams? I don't mind the idea of seeing Mario play on a contender next year, but couldn't he choose a team outside of the division? Seems a little unfair to the fans to go play for the rivals.

More importantly, who's going to buy his ownership interest? I bet he's going to take a nice little loss on that investment. Sadly, Hockey is a terrible investment.

True, up there its a little different than America. You have an exciting baseball team who puts up tons of runs and still nobody cares.

Philly....In toronto there are only 2 sports that matter...Hockey season and Hockey off season...and to define it even more..the only team that matter in the NHL foe torontonians is the Leafs...These are LEAF fans up here..not Hockey fans.

The Blue jays fell out of "vogue"...sadly enough ...the team is doing great but a lot of people are taking that "what have you done for me latly "stand.

The same thing will happen to the Raptors if they have another season like they did last year.

Not especially. Toronto loves hockey slightly more than it loves oxygen. From there, they'll watch a winner, but otherwise don't have much interest. I wouldn't say that's "fickle", and they don't bandwagon jump quite as badly as Los Angeles, but I'd agree that it's not a great "sports town".

That said, Jays were pushing 30,000 for the Red Sox series, which isn't bad at all.
