Return to the Playground: Backyard Baseball 2001

    Game: Backyard Baseball 2001
    Difficulty: Hard with Swing Spot
Settings: 6 Innings with Errors and Batting/Pitching Power-Ups

I had a lot of fun the first time I did this but life got the best of me and I let it all fall apart. I'll hopefully be able to finish it this time.

Re: Return to the Playground: Backyard Baseball 2001

Coach Captfalc here to give you a rundown of the squad before the season.

        Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez
        Batting 7/Running 9/Pitching 3/Fielding 9
Alex is a real student of the game. He watches film
from every single at-bat to see how he can improve
his swing. He's already a top MLB prospect at 12 years old.

        Achmed "Axeman" Khan
        Batting 10/Running 7/Pitching 2/Fielding 5
Achmed is never seen without his headphones and
he prefers to use his bat as a guitar. When he gets the
right song to play during his at-bat he can blast any pitch
        out of the park.

        Ernie "Funny Bones" Steele
        Batting 5/Running 6/Pitching 7/Fielding 10
A well-rounder player who can hit, pitch, and run.
Ernie's biggest strength is his glove and can field
anything throw to him at first base. Although if you
asked Ernie, he'd say his biggest strength is his jokes.

        Derek "DJ" Jeter
        Batting 8/Running 9/Pitching 3/Fielding 10
His nickname really should be "Clutch" since he always
seems to pull through. DJ dreams to play shortstop for the
New York Yankees and just might get there, as long as he
        finishes his homework first.

        Dante "Stretch" Robinson
        Batting 4/Running 9/Pitching 5/Fielding 7
Dante's favorite past-time is eating. He always a snack
ready to go, especially when he's playing centerfield.
Despite eating more often than breathing, he can
still whirl around the base paths.

        Pablo "Secret Weapon" Sanchez
        Batting 10/Running 9/Pitching 5/Fielding 10
Pablo isn't much of a secret anymore. A combination of
Ricky Henderson, Willie Mays, and Reggie Jackson
rolled into one. Maybe the only thing he can't do is speak English.

        Luanne "Lulu" Lui
        Batting 6/Running 10/Pitching 9/Fielding 7
Lulu keeps her best friend 'Teddy' with her at all times. She
prefers to pitch so she can keep Teddy safe in her glove. She's
not the best pitcher, but has the nastiest "fireball" in the league.

        Amir "Sticks" Khan
        Batting 7/Running 6/Pitching 9/Fielding 4
Amir is always close by to his brother, Achmed. While he's not
quite the hitter his brother is, he's more in tune with the game.
He prefers to bat after Achmed and hates not to be on his team.

        Pete "Wheelie" Wheeler
        Batting 8/Running 10/Pitching 2/Fielding 7
Pete swings at just about every pitch, but when he makes
contact he can spray it all over the field. His speed makes him
a threat to reach on anything, even hits right at the first baseman.

Coach Captfalc back again to give our lineup for opening day.
We'll be playing our home games at Playground Commons this
fall. Our lineup should stay fairly consistent all season. Pete is
probably the best lead-off hitter in the league since he can out
run almost anything. Luanne will start the season as our pitcher
with Ernie, Dante, and Amir likely to get some starts as well.
Although Alex prefers to play shortstop he agreed to play third
base so Derek can show the Yankees his potential.

Here's our schedule for the fall. We start our AL East division
play with three straight road games. That means we don't
have a home game until our fourth game. The Hornets and
Fishes are both in the AL, which gives us 5 AL games and 3 NL games.

              Melonhead Hitting
              Pete: 4-4, RBI (1), 3 R, 2 SB (2)
              Derek: 1-4, 2 RBI (2), R, K
              Pablo: 4-4, 2 HR (2), 5 RBI (5), 3 R, 4 SB (4)
              Achmed: 0-4, K
              Amir: 3-4, HR (1), 2 RBI (2), R
              Alex: 1-4
              Ernie: 2-4
              Luanne: 2-3, R, 3 SB (3), K

              Melonhead Pitching
              Luanne: 6 IP, 2 K, 2 R, 2 H, W(1-0)

              Game Summary
The Melonheads used the home run to do most of the
damage in their first game. Pablo Sanchez had a phenomenal
start to his season going 4-4 with 2 home runs. When he failed
to hit the ball out of the park he still managed to get all the way
to third by stealing four bases. It looked like this was going to
be tight game in the first when Nomar Garciaparra hit a two run
homer off of Luanne to answer Pablo’s first home run in the bottom
of the first. Luanne had other plans and settled down to retire
the rest of the Red Sox batters in order.

                Around the Diamond: Week 1
In the other AL East match-up the Blue Jays squeaked past
the Yankees 1-0. We've got the Yankees next week, so let's
see if we can keep the bats firing. Our non-divisional opponents
went an even 4-4 for the week.

                  Ernie: 6 IP, 7 K, 1 R, 6 H, W(1-0)

                  Game Summary
The Melonheads were able to score early and often against
the Yankees. Most of the kids were initially upset that the
Yankees hosted games in Tin Can Alley. Dante Robinson was
heard complaining before the game, “This place sucks! You can’t
even hit a home run here.” However, all the Melonheads seemed
pretty content as the runs kept pouring in. Achmed did most of
the damage driving in 7 of the 15 runs for the Melonheads. Ernie
started his first game of the season and had a strong outing
spreading out 6 hits through 6 innings and striking out 7.

                      Game Summary
The Melonheads got out to a 4-1 lead in the top half of the third inning
after a solo home run by Derek Jeter off of the shed in centerfield. The
Blue Jays tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning on a
three run home run off the bat of Rachel LaBuena. Luanne struggled
on the mound in the third and was eventually replace by Dante Robinson.
Each team was able to hit solo home runs in the 5th inning and the
game continued into extra innings. Achmed Khan belted a solo homer
in the 7th to give the Melonheads the ultimate edge.

                          Manager’s Report: Week 3
Every three weeks I’ll report here to update how our season is
going. Here are the finals for our first three games.

                          Melonheads 10 @ Red Sox 2
                          Melonheads 15 @ Yankees 1
                          Melonheads 7 @ Blue Jays 5 (7)

We had a great start to the season winning our first 3 games.
Especially in our first two games, our offense was explosive
driving in 25 runs. Next let’s look at the stats for the season

                          Hitting
                          Pete: 9-12, RBI, 6 R, BB, 3 SB, K
                          Derek: 4-12, HR, 4 RBI, 5 R, BB, 2 K
                          Pablo: 10-11, 2 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 11 R, 2 BB, 8 SB
                          Achmed: 7-13, 2 2B, HR, 9 RBI, 3 R, K
                          Amir: 9-13, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI, R
                          Alex: 6-13, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 3 R, SB, K
                          Ernie: 5-12, 2 RBI, 3 K
                          Luanne: 7-11, 2 R, 5 SB, 3 K
                          Dante: 3-11, 2 RBI, 2 SB, 3 K

                          Pitching
                          Luanne: 8.2 IP, 6 R, 4.15 ERA, 8 H, 3 K
                          Ernie: 6 IP, R, 1.00 ERA, 6 H, 7 K
                          Dante: 4.1 IP, R, 1.38 ERA, 3 H, 4 K

Alright, now for stats. The middle of our lineup is red hot. Pablo is
‘en fuego.’ He’s hitting a home run a game and driving in over 3
runs a game. Almost as impressively Pablo has stolen 8 bases, of
the total possible 12 he could have. Our team is batting 60/108
(0.556 average), which is absurd and we're unstoppable on offense.
We’ll see how well we can keep it up going forward. From the
pitching perspective, Ernie is surprisingly our best pitcher. Luanne
was our ace going into the season, but she has struggled so far.
Dante impressed in his debut, so he’ll get the nod on the mound
                          over Luanne.

Our next three games will finish our divisional schedule:
                          vs Red Sox (0-3)
                          vs Yankees (1-2)
                          vs Blue Jays (2-1)

                            Game Summary
The Melonhead bats stayed hot against the Red Sox today. It
started in the bottom of the 1st when Alex came up with the bases
loaded. Alex laid down a crazy bunt and was able to circle the bases
in the ensuing confusion, resulting in a very unusual grand slam.
The Melonheads had their biggest inning of the season in the third
scoring 7 runs, which started with back-to-back solo home runs by Pablo
and Achmed and included a two-run double by Ernie. Ernie dominated
on the mound as well striking out 7 and scattering four hits throughout
the game. He only made one mistake when he left a slow-ball over
the middle of the plate to Jorge Garcia, who belted a solo home run
for the Red Sox’s only run.

                            Player of the Game:

                            Alex Rodriguez and Ernie Steele

                              Around the Diamond: Week 4
The Blue Jays stayed on course with us beating the Yankees.
Our non-divisional opponents went an even 4-4 again, making
them 17-15 on the season. The Mariners are the most impressive
so far, as they are also 4-0. After dropping their first game, the
Braves are undefeated in their past 3 games.
