Wright State Team Update

As the Wright State Raiders have gotten their season in full swing it is time to take a look at the start of the year for them.
The Raiders on the offensive end are led by SO. SF Derek Clinton. Derek right now averages 15.6 PPG along with 5.2 APG and grabbing 6.4 RPG. Two other Raiders average over 10 PPG, those being team captain SR. PF Anthony Gordon at 11.6 and then SO. SG Rick Mueller at 11.1 PPG. Freshman C Howard Camp is just shy of averaging a double-double at 8.9 PPG and 9.7 RPG.
The Raiders are sitting at a record of 3-4 right now with their next game being against the #4 team in the nation Gonzaga.

Right now in the Horizon League, Howard Camp leads the way for Freshman Of The Year followed by another Raider. That being Madu Simon. Derek Clinton sits in second for the Player Of The Year voting behind Illinois-Chicago big man Stephen Everett who average 25.4 PPG and 13.9 RPG.

After sitting down and talking with the fellow coaches, Ryan Ashton came out and announced that the Raiders had offered PG Michael Cotton a scholarship. Michael Cotton has the Raiders as the top choice for his school choices right now and it only seems to be getting better. Along with Michael, the Raiders are preparing to soon make their decision on whether they will pursue 7'4 big man Cono Ulrich or the 7 footer Tyson Armstrong.

Raiders Close Out Non-Conference

The Raiders came in to the final few weeks of non-conference games with four games to finish. They would have three straight home games followed by a road game to cap off the month. In those four games the Raiders would finish off 3-1 closing out non-conference play with a 6-5 record.

Game 1: The Raiders would host the #4 team in the country Gonzaga. What had felt like a lopsided game throughout had shown different on the scoreboard.
In the first half of the game it was Gonzaga big man Ed Waller who would pave the way. Ed Waller averages 26.6 PPG and 13.1 RPG. There is a reason this man is the frontrunner for National Player of The Year. Waller led the Bulldogs to an early 22-7 lead and it only felt as if it would grow. The Raiders pulled out of their press and played a half court 2-3 and started to bite back. Narrowing the gap to 12 at the half down 39-27.
Coming in to the second half the Raiders wanted to prove that they could score against a solid defense and they did just that. The Raiders put up 40 in the second half but would also give up 41 to their counterpart.
Gonzaga won the game 80-67 with C Ed Waller scoring 31 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Derek Clinton for Wright State put up 20 points.

Game 2: The Raiders knew they had to come in to this game and get a win. The team with a record of 3-5 could not go into conference play with a record in such a bad spot. George Mason is one of the best scoring teams in the country and they pushed the Raiders to the brink.
Throughout the first half it did not matter if the Raiders wanted to press or not, George Mason was going to score. The first half had gone back and forth. After being up 6 with just under 3 minutes left, the Raiders turned the ball over on 6 of 7 possessions to close the half. They were down 47-43.
After having 13 points in the first half with only 1 rebound and 2 assists, it would be on Derek Clinton to step up for the Raiders. He did just that. George Mason had no answer for Clinton has he would go for 21 points in the second half, adding 4 rebounds and 3 more assists to his stat sheet. The freshman Howard Camp became an inside the paint success in the second half as well drawing the fouls and getting to the line. The Raiders would pull away late in their highest scoring game of the year.

Wright State: 92 George Mason: 87

Game 3: In the final game of the three game home stand, the Wright State Raiders would host Gardner-Webb and the Runnin' Bulldogs. It was a game where it felt like no matter what kind of press the Raiders showed, it was going to get beaten.
The first half was a let down for Wright State. The Raiders shot a poor 23% and also being out rebounded 19-6 in the first half. These numbers resulted in them being down 41-19.
After being torn apart by Coach Ashton in the locker room the Raiders came out a different team. They switched their defense up to a 3-2 Trap. The Raiders quickly opened up on a 10-0 run in the first 3 minutes to make it a 41-29 game. Coming out of a Bulldog timeout the Raiders would trade a few buckets before going on a 7-0 run. With just over 5 minutes left in the game the Raiders now found themselves down 4 (54-50).
A quiet Derek Clinton would erupt to score the Raiders next 8 points and with the clock running down the Runnin' Bulldogs who were had been held scoreless the last 5 minutes would have to tie it at the buzzer or go home knowing they blew the 22 point half time lead. Off a bad inbound pass it ended up in C Jeff Howard's hands and he bricked it off the backboard at the buzzer.

Wright State: 58 Gardner Webb: 50

Game 4: In the final game of Wright State's non-conference schedule they would be on the road to face off against a somewhat weak South Alabama team.
The first half was a slow start for the Raiders as they were held to just 26 points against a very weak defense. It had all started from their poor shooting and the fact they were allowing easy inside buckets to Bama. The Raiders were lucky to go into halftime with a 26-23 lead.
After struggling in the first half Wright State had came out a whole different team in the second. Derek Clinton would score 12 of his 16 points in the second half and senior captain Anthony Gordon would grab all 8 of his rebounds in the second half. South Alabama just had no answer for the Raiders.

Wright State: 72 South Alabama: 61

The Wright State Raiders closed out non-conference play with a record of 6-5. With good wins over George Mason, TCU and Loyola and then their questionable losses to Western Kentucky and Old Dominion both at home.
The Raiders this upcoming week open up conference play as the second place team right now with their first game at home against Cleveland St (5-6) then they will travel on the road to take on the first place team in the conference Youngstown St (8-3).

Wright State Recruitment

These past few weeks Wright State has been pushing for two recruits. One by the name of Michael Cotton [6'1 3* PG Pennsylvania] and Cono Ulrich [7'4 3* C Ohio].
It came out a few weeks ago that Wright State was at the point where they wanted to offer Michael Cotton one of the two scholarships they had to offer this year. After sitting down with him and his high school coach they did just that. Michael Cotton had one request, that being "Coach Ashton gets me minutes in every game." Coach Ashton agreed and before he knew it, Michael Cotton was now a Raider.

Next on the list was Cono Ulrich. Cono is one of the more interesting in this past years recruiting scene. He once played against Coach Ashton back when Coach Ashton coached high school, then he soon became one of his most sought after recruits. With a lack of size on the Raiders roster this year he knew he needed a big man. He went after one of the players he use to gameplan against.
At the beginning of the recruiting phase Cono had Wright State listed at fourth on his list. Coach Ashton and his assistants would soon climb up the list. Promising Cono that he would start his freshman year, get solid playing time and be a solid factor. What mainly sold Cono Ulrich? The coach himself. Cono Ulrich wanted to play for Ryan Ashton. As soon as the time felt right, Coach Ashton offered the scholarship to Cono Ulrich, and within a week he heard back. The answer was yes! Cono Ulrich was now a Raider.

Coach Ashton on first half of season: "It was a good start to the year. I think right now we should be sitting at 8-3 but not all the games could go our way. We enter conference play this month and I like our chances. We easily had the hardest start to the season out of the teams in our conference. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5-6) did upset Gonzaga at home, but have not played the same teams we have. They should be a good challenge for us.
On the recruiting end, I can't be any more happy with the work we have done. We went out and got the exact two guys we wanted. We targeted some other solid players that I wish we could have brought here but with so few scholarships this year we got what we needed."

Notables Around The NCAA

- At the end of non-conference play two teams remain undefeated: #1 Tennessee 13-0 and #6 Washington State 11-0.

- Big Ten has 2 teams in the Top-25: #3 Indiana, #5 Michigan State

Raiders Take First Conference Game

Cleveland State Vikings 5-6 (0-0) 69 @ Wright State Raiders 6-5 (0-0) 72

In what was a back and forth game between the Vikings and the Raiders, the Raiders were able to grab the win at home to start the year. Wright State would be led by Derek Clintons 14 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assist night. His counterpart on the other hand did not have such a good night. Spiro Whitfield is a 6'5 JR who is up for All-Conference Team and averages just over 16 points per game was held to only 4 by Derek.

The Vikings relied on SO PG Stephen Baxter who was the leading scorer that day with 19 points and 8 assists. At the end of the first half the Raiders led by just 2, 34-32.

Coming out in the second half Cleveland State started to pressure the ball. At one point in the second half the Vikings jumped out to a six point lead but could not hold on. Down the stretch it was SR PF Anthony Gordon who hit 6 of 6 free throws to end the game. The Raiders would sneak out on the night with a win over a young and talented Cleveland State team.

Quote:
It was a good way to start our conference play. Cleveland State only starts one senior and they play very well as a team. The Raiders and Viking fans came out tonight to see a good match-up between Clinton and Whitfield but we were able to stop Whitfield from doing anything. The next time we meet up with them on the road the game could be a different outcome. While it is a great win it cannot be celebrated too much. Next up we go on the road to face Youngstown State who is the top team in the conference right now.

Penguins Halt Raiders Comeback

Wright State Raiders 7-5 (1-0) 65 @ Youngstown State Penguins 9-3 (1-0) 69

It was a nail biter the whole way. The Penguins showed truly why they are the top team in this conference showing Wright State multiple full court presses and then a mix of attacks on offense. Whenever the Raiders seemed to find an answer the Penguins would change it up to something else to throw them off.

The first half resulted in the Penguins being up only 2, 34-32. But throughout the half they had held a 10 and 14 point lead at one point. The Penguins forced 7 turnovers in the first half and scored off of 5 of the turnovers.

Coming out of the half the Raiders knew that they were going to have to find something to trust and go through with it for the next half. That is exactly what they did. Derek Clinton would emerge as the playmaker dishing 6 assists, grabbing 5 rebounds and putting 12 points on the board. After jumping out to a 6 point lead and having the clock slowly wind down, it looked as if the Raiders would defeat the Penguins. But that wasn't so, Derek Clinton dying for a breath at 3:43 left in the game gave up crucial three pointer to Andy Baldwin. It would be Baldwins only make on 6 attempts of the night. It would only get worse from there and the Raiders saw themselves having to foul just to stay in it. The fouling began but the Penguins would knock down all of their free throws leaving Wright State looking from the outside.

Youngstown State was led by their inside force of Brice Ray who shot 10-15 and pulled down 14 rebounds. Along with Brice, the Penguins relied on SR PG Gary Royal who may not have had his best shooting night (5-13) but hit 7 free throws and tacked on 10 assists.

Quote:
Tonight we just were not physically and mentally prepared for what happened. Youngstown State beat us up inside and when we started to collapse the paint they would answer us back with the mid-range jumpers and long ball. While we may have lost their are some upsides that I do not think should go unnoticed. Back up PF Adam Ollie came off the bench and shot a helpful 7-11 giving us 17 points and 6 rebounds on only 12 minutes. With production like this he could be a key role in weeks to come.

With 7 games over the next 14 days we will have to prepare for each game and rest as much as we can. Our players are going to get tired but will have to keep grinding and fight so we can produce enough wins to give us a good spot come conference tournament time.

Press Conference

Reporter: Coach Ashton, the first week of conference play is behind us and you guys sit 1-1. Overall your record is 7-6. How do you feel about all this?

Coach Ashton: Well I can't say that I am disappointed in the outcome so far but it is something new. Coming over from the high school style to college style. I do not doubt that we can contend in the conference tournament at the end of the regular season but we will have to play strong these next couple weeks. We have 3 games this week followed by 4 the next then things will slow down for a bit. Over the next 7 games we get our first look at home against UIC, on the road with Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Valp. Then we head home for our rematch with Youngstown State followed by a three game road stand with Detroit, Butler and UW-Green Bay.

Reporter: You knocked up two solid recruits in Michael Cotton and Cono Ulrich, where do you see them standing in next years lineup?

Coach Ashton: I am not going to go throwing any answers out there that would make players mad at the moment but it is hard to see someone like 7 foot 4 Cono Ulrich coming off the bench. Having Michael Cotton on the lineup next year gives us a solid true point guard but we also have Madu Simon returning and I expect Bill Newton to return as well. No promise that Cotton gets the starting job.

Reporter: We know that your stint has been young, but what are your goals as a basketball coach?

Coach Ashton: Rather interesting of you to ask, my goals since the day I started here have been..
- Sign a 5 star recruit
- Sign the top recruit of a class
- Win a National Championship
- Work my way to a high major program
- Work in the NBA one day

Reporter: You say "Work in the NBA one day" elaborate on this...

Coach Ashton: Well it is certainly something I don't have my eye on right now. But imagine it "Coach Ashton Moves To NBA." That would be quite the story thinking that most coaches have not done well transitioning from college to the pros. But for now I am enjoying my time here at Wright State and have plans here. I do not plan on leaving anytime soon.
