Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

I am the new owner of the Brooklyn Nets. I have one goal. That is to make this team into a dynasty that rivals those of the Bulls, Lakers, and Celtics of years gone by. That will be no easy task. The old management has left this team with little hope of a future. The future was traded away for players to win now and that did not work. I am here to fix that. I am here to make the Brooklyn Nets great.

    The question is simple: How?!?!?

Before I divulge my plan, let us go over some basic housekeeping. I play on the PS4. All games are simmed. Simulation difficulty is set to 50. All sliders are set to 50 for myleague options with the exception of career ending injuries which are turned down to 20. The league has their current pick status set as well. League expansion is turned on but there will only be the 30 teams to start. We are going to keep this as realistic as possible, so I am not going to make crazy trades or anything else like that. I will also be doing minimal league rule changes, if any. Again, we want realism here. My goal for posting will be to do a preseason preview, a review of the team at the all-star break, and again at the end of the season. The preseason preview will hold all offseason activities from the previous year.

So, how do we turn the Nets into contenders? Well, it won’t be easy, as I said, the old management left us with very little for the future and bad contracts. Management used to have a win now mentality, no matter what it does for the future. That is not the approach we are going to take this time. We are going to build our team through the draft and smart trades. We will not be trading bad contracts for bad contracts unless is nets us draft picks, and the player is on the last year of a deal. The players we have with inflated contacts will not get us much in the way of draft picks, but we will do what we can.

We are going to turn this team around through the draft, good coaching, good off season training, and smart off seasons.

I have sat down with the current coach, Kenny Atkinson. He is signed to a 1 year contract. We discussed that we are going to be losing for a while, so my expectation of him is to keep morale on this team up. It’s going to be hard when we are losing 55 to 60 games a year.

Our roster for the 2016-17 season looks like this and their contract years remaining. Player overall and potential are in parentheses:

    PG Jeremy Lin (76 B-): 2 years
    PG Isaiah Whitehead (68 C): 2 years
    PG Yogi Ferrell (66 C-): 1 year
    SG Sean Kilpatrick (76 B-): 1 year
    SG Caris Levert (72 A-): 2 years
    SG Randy Foye (72 C+): 1 year
    SG Joe Harris (68 C+): 1 year
    SF Bojan Bogdanovic (76 B-): 1 year
    SF Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (72 B): 1 year
    PF Luis Scola (74 B-): 1 year
    PF Trevor Booker (73 B-): 2 years
    PF Anthony Bennett (70 C+): 1 year
    PF Chris Mccollough (69 B+): 1 year
    C Brook Lopez (81 B): 2 years
    C Justin Hamilton 72 (B-): 2 years

    Roster Assessment:

Looking at the roster, we have players like Lin, Booker, and Lopez who are all over payed for their skill level. None of those 3 are bad players, but the contracts are bad. It will be hard to find a buyer for any of these players, especially with the huge cap hit that Lopez’s $21 million salary will cause. There are a few players that have some potential for a future on our team, granted they get into training camp over the summer. Mccollough and Levert will be the focus of training camp over the summer. They are 21 and 22 years old respectively, and can have a bright future if coached the right way. Bogdanovic is another player we will probably keep around. He is 27 and at his max potential, but he can be a good place holder for the future of this team, as will Kilpatrick. No player on this team is untouchable though. There will be no trades or free agency signings, unless warranted by roster injuries until the Trade Deadline.

Training camp during the offseason will be untapped potential for those players aged 24 or less, who will have a future with this team.

The teams currently held draft picks: 2017 1st round (swap worst with Boston), 2017 2nd round, 2019 1st round, 2020 1st round.

As can be seen by the utter lack of draft picks, a lot of our future has been traded away for players that no longer wear the black and white of the Brooklyn Nets.

We do not have a set timeline for us to be contenders. It will be a process. A long process.

So, with that said, I present my Brooklyn Nets dynasty. This is also my first dynasty on here.

    Thanks for reading!

Re: Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

As we have approached the all-star break of the 2016-17 NBA season, we will review some stats and some notable games from the first half of the season. Afterwards, we will get into any roster changes that the Nets have made.

        Stats

PPG: Sean Kilpatrick 18.3 PPG, Brook Lopez 17.5 PPG, Bojan Bogdanovic 16.4 PPG, Jeremy Lin 16.3 PPG

Minutes per game: Jeremy Lin 34.8 MPG

Assists per game: Jeremy Lin, 8.5 APG

Rebounds per game: Trevor Book 8.1 RPG, Brook Lopez 7.3 RPG

Blocks per game: Brook Lopez 1.7 BPG

Steals per game: Jeremy Lin 1.7 SPG

Brook Lopez had a team single season high in points with 35. Trevor Booker had a team high 16 rebounds, and Yogi Ferrell had a team high with 15 assists.

Though we had some memorable moments as a team the first half of the season, we are where we expected to be at this point. With a record of 17-39. We are 5th in the Atlantic, 15th in the conference, and last in the league in the 2k power rankings. We beat Boston 114-104 in our first game of the year and again in our next meeting with them later in November. We also had a big 98-91 win against San Antonio. Our longest win streak of the first half was 3 wins. Our longest losing streak was 10 games.

We had no players make the All Star team, though Isaiah Whitehead did play for the Elites in the Elites Vs. Stars game

As the break approached, we were shopping some of our players, namely Brook Lopez and Jeremy Lin to the league. They both had decent first halves of the year and we thought this would be to our advantage. We looked to acquire draft picks for these players. Unfortunately, we were not successful. The most we could get were bad contracts and second round draft picks, so as a collective unit, we decided not to follow through with those offers.

That being said, we made the following moves at the trade deadline: None.

Boston was on the edge of the playoffs, in the 7th spot only 1 game ahead of 8th and 3 games ahead of the 9th spot. We decided we were going to take a calculated gamble and hold on to our 1st rounder from them.

We could not find any players that would help our team in the future, and with very little in draft assets, we decided to stay pat. This move may come back to haunt us, but we cannot gamble any more of our future picks on a single trade or two to get more picks earlier. Again, our plan is to win in the future. We are not in win now mode.

We are going to play out the year and see if we can move Brook Lopez and Jeremy Lin ahead of the All Star Break next year.

Stay tuned for the offseason and a recap of our first season in Brooklyn.

        Thanks for reading!

Re: Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

The end of the 2016-17 NBA season has arrived. The Brooklyn Nets finished with a record of 25-57, which puts them 5th in the Atlantic Division, 15th in the Eastern Conference, and 30th in the league for record. We finished 30th in the 2k Power Rankings. Our longest win streak of the year was 3 games, from January 8 to January 12. Our longest losing streak was 10 games, between December 18 and January 6. The good news is here is we broke our longest losing streak with our longest winning streak of the year.

The Boston Celtics finished at 43-39, which put them in the 5th spot in the weak Eastern Conference. The calculated risk we took hoping the Celtics would not make the playoffs and get us a chance at a lottery pick did not pay off. The Celtics did finish with a record of 43-39, so we should be in the top 20 picks.

Here are the final standings for the season:

Looking at these standings, the West was clearly the superior conference this season. There are a lot of teams in the East that need rebuilding, including us.

As a team, we did go 8-8 in the Atlantic Division this year, including 3-1 against the Celtics and 0-4 against the Raptors.

Brook Lopez did have a good year for us on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

As a team scored 96.8 points per game (28th in the league) and allowed 105.4 points per game (30th in the league.)

At the end of the season, Luis Scola retired. Paul Pierce retired and was elected into the Hall of Fame. Paul Pierce, representing Boston, and Manu Ginobli, representing, San Antonio, had their numbers retired.
We signed a new CFO, head scout, and trainer.

Coach Kenny Atkinson was given a 1 year extension at the end of his current 1 year contract.

Re: Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

The NBA Lottery has come. We have the highest odds for the number 1 pick this year. But we have the worst of a best/worst swap with the Boston Celtics, who made the playoffs.

The lottery picks and first round draft order are:

            1. Boston (via Brooklyn)
            2. Dallas
            3. Utah
            4. New York
            5. Phoenix
            6. Washington
            7. Miami
            8. Minnesota
            9. Philadelphia
            10. Orlando
            11. Chicago (via Sacramento)
            12. Indiana
            13. New Orleans
            14. Philadelphia (via LA Lakers)
            15. Charlotte
            16. Milwaukee
            17. Atlanta
            18. Brooklyn (via Boston)
            19. Portland
            20. Denver (via Memphis)
            21. Chicago
            22. Houston
            23. Denver
            24. Oklahoma City
            25. Detroit
            26. Toronto (via LA Clippers)
            27. San Antonio
            28. Toronto
            29. Utah
            30. Cleveland

In the draft we hold the 18th and the 48th picks in the draft. This draft class was auto-generated last season with no changes made.

Here is a summary of the top 10 picks in the draft. Milwaukee traded up to the 4th spot with New York. Utah traded up to the 6th spot with Washington. Portland traded into the 7th spot with Miami. New York traded back into the top 10 at the 9th pick with Philadelphia:

We did not sign Trace Milton.

Overall, this was a pretty solid draft class, especially in the top 10. There are some players here, especially the top 2 picks, both centers, that will have bright futures in the NBA.

            Team Options:

            Hollis-Jefferson: accepted 2 year
            Anthony Bennett: declined
            Joe Harris: declined
            Sean Kilpatrick: accepted 1 year
            Chris Mccollough: accept 2 years

            Free Agency:

Overall we remained quiet this offseason in terms of free agency. We still have the contract of Brook Lopez and we are still on the hook for 5.5 million a year for the next few years to Deron Williams through the 2019-20 season.

Our plan to build through the draft and offseason has not changed. We looked to bolster our bench with some role players. Our goal was not to make a splash and as a reminder, to keep this realistic.

            Our signings:

            SF Doug McDermott (75B-):2 years/$4.06M
            PF Thomas Robinson (75B-): 1 year/$1.22M
            PG Shelvin Mack (75 B-): 2 years/$2.54M
            C Andrew Bogut (76B): 1 year/$1.61M

Some notable offseason signings from around the league:

PF Paul Millsap to Philadelphia for 4 years/$132.32M
C Enes Canter to Miami for 1 year/$17.88M
SF Giannis Antetokuonmpo to New York for 4 years/$100M

These were the major signings, a lot of players accepted options and stayed with their old team or chose to resign with their own team. Kevin Durant and Steph Curry both stayed with the Warriors. The Millsap deal gives the 76ers a plethora of big men, which may mean that they chose not to sign a player like Nerlens Noel after this next season. If that is the case, we may have to make a push for the young defensive minded center.

The Knicks signing of Antetokuonmpo will probably mean the end of the Carmelo Anthony era in New York as this is his last year of his contract. It will be interesting to see what the Knicks do as it will impact our division.

Overall, the Atlantic Division got stronger, so we, the management of the Brooklyn Nets, will have to work harder to stay competitive. This does not mean deviating from our plan.

            Offseason Trade:
With us signing Andrew Bogut and drafting Shaun Brigdeman, we have 4 centers active on the roster. We decided to trade C Justin Hamilton, who was now expendable. He was traded to the Rockets for a 2020 1st round (lottery protected) draft pick. This pick may get us a mid first rounder if the Rockets make the playoffs that year, and we may also get nothing out of it if they don’t. We were getting a player not needed off the team who did not contribute last season for a potential player who could contribute in the future. Again, another calculated risk.

            Players not brought back:

            SG Randy Foye
            SG Joe Harris
            PF Anthony Bennett
            PF Luis Scola (retired)

            Training Camp (untapped potential):

Caris Levert: B up to B+
Chris Mccollough: B- up to B
Shaun Bridgeman: C+ up to B-

The upcoming draft class for the 2018 NBA Draft was auto-generated with no changes made.

Stay tuned for our preseason preview for the 2017-18 NBA season, including full roster, starting lineup, and a prospect profile of our newest Brooklyn player, Shaun Bridgeman. I will also do a highlight of the ideal player type I want for each starting position, whether that potential player is currently in the NBA or a future draft pick in a future post as well, so stay tuned.

Re: Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

Welcome to the start of the 2017-18 NBA season. All 30 teams start with a clean slate, including us. Day 1 everyone is a contender for the championship. This is a big year for the Brooklyn Nets as we come off a 57-loss season. Something we expected from the get go. A few months back we handed the Celtics our first-round pick, which they own again this year. We do not have a pick in the draft this upcoming summer of 2018. We will need to address that at some point this season. We decided not to move the contracts of Brook Lopez and Jeremy Lin at the all-star break or over the offseason and go into the season with both players still in our lineup.

Before we go any further, here is our roster:

This is our opening day lineup, with changes based upon good/bad performance. Coach Kenny Atkinson has day to day control over the starting lineup and rotation.

              Draft picks we currently hold:

              2019 Nets 1st round
2020 Nets 1st round and a 1st round (via Houston, lottery protected)
              2021 1st and 2nd round

Looking at the future of draft picks, we currently have 2 first round picks in the 2020 draft, assuming the Rockets make the playoffs. As stated before, we also lack a draft pick for the 2018 draft coming up this summer. Our goal is to acquire more draft picks for the future. We are still pretty bare on picks, with only 5 in the next 4 years. This will be addressed at either the all-star break or during this upcoming offseason. We will see where we are sitting in February before the trade deadline and assess from there.

Looking at the league, here are the preseason power rankings:

              1. Golden State
              2. San Antonio
              3. Cleveland
              4. Toronto
              5. Boston
              6. L.A. Clippers
              7. Oklahoma City
              8. Houston
              9. Detroit
              10. Portland
              11. Denver
              12. Philadelphia
              13. Indiana
              14. New Orleans
              15. Memphis
              16. Atlanta
              17. Chicago
              18. Milwaukee
              19. Washington
              20. Sacramento
              21. Utah
              22. Phoenix
              23. L.A. Lakers
              24. New York
              25. Miami
              26. Orlando
              27. Charlotte
              28. Minnesota
              29. Dallas
              30. Brooklyn

As we are still in a major rebuild, we are ranked last in the preseason power rankings. We do not like this but we know it is inevitable in our position. Besides, we know these are only preseason rankings, and they mean nothing once the season starts. Still, it feels unsettling.

Before we get into the season, let’s take a look at our newest draft pick, C Shaun Bridgeman.

Shaun is a 21-year-old, 6’10”, 237-pound, 71 overall, B minus potential center from Oregon State. He was a 3-year player at Oregon State, and a 2-year starter at the center position for the Beavers. During the course of his time at Oregon State, he averaged 18.8 points per game, 9.2 rebounds per game, and 1.6 blocks per game. In his last year, he led the Beavers to the sweet 16, where they lost to the Kentucky Wildcats. His skill set is a 2-star rating in rebounding, post scoring, and defense. As can be seen by his numbers in college, his rebounding and post scoring potential are why we drafted him. Our head scout reports that he can seem lost at times in new offenses and needs to learn to fill and defend the passing lanes better. He will also need to improve his mid-range shooting to be effective in our offense. He will receive only limited playtime this year and it will be at the center position. We would like to see Brook Lopez mentor him this season and teach him the way of the NBA post player. Long term, after this rookie season, Shaun will probably be moved to the power forward spot as his size and strength will be better suited there than at the center position. Overall, with some solid coaching, practice, and a few years to develop, we feel he can be a solid power forward that can provide some interior defense and scoring for us for years to come.

Stay tuned for our midseason update.

              Thanks for reading!

Re: Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

As we now approach the all-star break of the 2017-18 NBA Season, we sit at a record of 17-40, which puts us in 5th place in the Atlantic Division, 14th in the conference, only ahead of Milwaukee, and 30th in the NBA 2k Power Rankings.

In our lineup, Jeremy Lin replaced a struggling Shelvin Mack at point guard. Also, due to injury again, Caris Levert has had starting time at shooting guard while Sean Kilpatrick is hurt again. Thomas Robinson also suprassed Trevor Booker in the rotation at the power forward position. Trevor Booker was not playing poorly, he went down with an injury, Robinson filled in, and earned himself the starting nod.

Our first game of the year was a win at home against the L.A. Lakers by a score of 108-107.

Our longest winning streak of the season has been 5 games, starting February 15, 2018 thru today, Feb 22, 2018 at the all-star break.
Our longest losing streak so far this season was a span of 12 games, stretching from November 22, 2017 to December 13, 2017 finally being broke with a 123-90 win over the Boston Celtics. We are currently 2-1 against our rival Celtics this season.

Our Nets have struggled again this season. Coach Atkinson has been working to keep team morale and chemistry high. Simply put, it is hard to do when we are losing on a regular basis and trying to build for the future. It is a double-edged sword. No matter how we move forward, it is not an easy task.

But you know, we are determined and strong willed. Basketball will be great in this city and we will bring the Nets their first championship.

Let’s take a look and see how our players have fared so far this season.

                    Team Leaders in stats:

                    PPG: Lopez 18.0, Bogdanovic 17.8, Kilpatrick 13.8, Lin 13.3
                    RPG: Robinson 9.5, Booker 8.4, Lopez 8.2, Bogut 7.9
                    APG: Mack 7.0, Lin 5.8
                    SPG: Lin 1.4, Hollis-Jefferson 1.4
                    BPG: Lopez 1.9, Bogut 1.7
                    MPG: Bogdanovic 31.4, Lopez 30.8, Lin 28.4
                    3P%: Bogdanovic .400, Kilpatrick .371

We have had some solid performances by individual players the first half of this season. PF Thomas Robinson has been a pleasant surprise for the team, leading us in rebounds. C Andrew Bogut has played well off of the bench defensively, and is even being considered a top 5 candidate for 6th Man of the Year.

We were not represented in the all-star game or the stars vs. elites’ game.
However, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson did represent our Nets in the slam dunk contest and was victorious. He had a stellar performance in the contest and made our fan base and organization proud. Well done to Rondae.

                    Trade Deadline:

                    We made no moves again.

We received an interesting offer from the Knicks that involved Joakim Noah, but we would have to take his salary on for 2 years. We want to make sure we have some cap space this summer as we want to target Nerlens Noel of the 76ers, assuming they no longer need him since they signed Paul Millsap to that massive contact last summer.

After discussing it with our coach and GM, we decided we were going to address our draft pick needs during the offseason. The more picks we have, the more flexibility we have when it comes to the draft. Plus the more picks we have, the higher the odds of us finding those players to be the next generation of Brooklyn players and lead us to the promised land of the NBA Championship. Jeremy Lin has a 1 year player option, so we may move him if he accepts that during the summer. Brook Lopez was undecided if he wanted to resign with us so our plan is to see if we can sign him to a 1 year deal at a more reasonable price tag then move him next year before the deadline.

Again, this strategy may come back to haunt us, but we want to acquire talent that will help us in the future. If we get Lopez under a more team friendly contract, he will be a lot easier to move. If he decides to walk, we do lose out on potential draft picks for him, but we will have to accept that if it happens.

Stay tuned for our end of season recap.

                    Thanks for reading!

Re: Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

At the end of the 2017-18 NBA campaign, the Nets finished with a record of 30-52. This put us at 5th in the Atlantic Division, 12th in the conference, 26th in the league in record and also 26th in the 2k Power Rankings, 4 up from where we began the season. We also won 5 more games than the previous season. We also finished 8-8 in our division, the same as the year prior.

Our longest win streak stretched to 6 games, with us winning the first game after the all-star break, but we then dropped the next 4 game after that. Our longest losing streak remained the 12-game stretch from early in the year.

Our Nets allowed an average of 103.9 points per game which was 29th out of 30.

Looking at these 2 numbers, we need to continue to focus on finding players to help on both offense and defense to bring these numbers up/down respectively.

Both Brook Lopez and Bojan Bogdanovic had good years for us. Thomas Robinson kept the starting PF position the rest of the year posting some good rebounding totals for us. He impressed us with his play on the defensive glass all season long. Looking at these team stats, out next area of focus in the draft will probably be the point guard position. Only problem is we do not own a draft pick in the draft this season. We will need to address that during the draft.

The Golden State Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0 in the NBA Finals, stopping a three-peat for the Cavs. Steph Curry was the Finals MVP posting monster numbers for the Warriors. The Warriors have done a great job to keep their core intact and any team coming out of the East, will need to keep up with the Warriors.

The start of the offseason saw Vince Carter retire and elected as the sole player enshrined into the Hall of Fame this year, with no one having a jersey retired.

Once again, there were no rule changes in the NBA.

After 2 years coaching the team, we sat down with Head Coach Kenny Atkinson to discuss his future and the team’s future. Coach Atkinson was given a tough assignment and we recognize that. He told us he has struggled for 2 years to keep morale high. We agreed to do what was in the best interest of the organization.

We decided to mutually part ways with Head Coach Kenny Atkinson and Assistant Coach Jacque Vaughn. We sat down with the media and informed them of our decision. We fielded many questions, including potential replacements. We are going to do a long and thorough search to find that coach that can foster the development of our draft classes and maximize their potential.

A year ago, we passed on the opportunity to sign Kevin McHale as our head coach and gave Kenny Atkinson a 1 year contract. We sat down for a long talk with Kevin McHale before we extended a 1 year contract to coach Atkinson. I knew that coach Atkinson was not the long term answer we needed, but was doing a good job of keeping the players chemistry up in spite of losses piling up. Kevin McHale was very close to becoming our new head coach, but I was not enamored with Kevin McHale. His vision was to bring in veterans and push for the playoffs as soon as possible. This was not on course with our vision. This is why I decided to extend Kenny Atkinson’s contract last offseason through now.

During our press conference, we thanked him for his time here and wished him luck in the future, and would gladly welcome him back later in a different role in our organization.

We were also seeking a replacement at the assistant GM position, whom stepped down at the end of the season.

At the end of this offseason, we are going to have a staff of management all personally picked by myself.

We decided to hire Jeff Hornacek as the next head coach of the Brooklyn Nets with a 3 year/$3.33M per year deal. He decided to bring on Aiden Morgan as assistant coach to a 2 year/$680K per year deal. Hornacek’s coaching attributes are B+ for offense, B- for defense, and B- for potential. Morgan’s coaching attributes are B- for offense, B for defense, and A- for potential.

We welcomed coach Hornacek to the team in an official press conference, only days after hiring him. We exhausted our search, interviewing 9 candidates for the position but felt in the end, that coach Hornacek was the best option for us.

Here are some of my comments from the press conference. “His vision is to focus on young players and foster their growth for a future in our organization. He understands what we are trying to accomplish here and we feel, as an organization, that he is on the same wavelength with management. He will be working very closely with our GM and know that they will work very well together. We trust that coach Hornacek’s coaching abilities will help lead us to a brighter tomorrow.”

After getting our new coaching staff in place, we needed to look ahead to the 2018 NBA Draft and figure out a way to get into it. We only had 4 players under contract for next year going into the draft so we didn’t have a lot of extra room to work our way in.

We held the 5th best chance for the number 1 pick, which belongs to the Celtics, with no swap this year. With those 7.6% odds, Boston won the number 1 pick a second year in a row after being a playoff team the season prior.

Stay tuned for the 2018 NBA Draft and the rest of the offseason.

                      Thanks for reading!

Definitely. The Atlantic is getting stronger around us. The Knicks have made some solid moves the last year and a half and freed up cap space by moving Joakim Noah to Philadelphia at the deadline. Not sure why the 76ers needed another big man. But, it will give the Knicks the space to resign Carmelo it seems. The Knicks will be perennial contenders in a few years it seems.

                            30. Golden State

In this draft, we do not hold any picks. We do, however, make a draft night trade into the first round. We trade SF Doug McDermott to the Portland Trailblazers for the 17th pick in the first round. This was the only trade we made that night. We traded a player that would not be part of the future, for a chance to draft a player that could be a big part of our future. This class was very thin on point guards, so we will have to wait another year to find our point guard of the future.

Before we get into our pick, here is a summary of the top 10:

There was a pretty big trade here in the top 10. Memphis traded PG Mike Conley and SF Chandler Parsons to Dallas for the 6th pick and a 2021 1st round pick (top 10 protected). This trade gives Memphis back to back picks. They then trade the player they just drafted, PF Randolph Boyd, to Minnesota for the 7th pick in the draft. Boston also traded back into the 5th spot to hold 2 top 5 picks this year, trading their later first rounder and some future picks. In the draft, the Milwaukee Bucks also held and traded to make 5 total picks in this draft.

Here is our pick in the 2018 NBA Draft:

2018 NBA Draft - Brooklyn Nets Draft Picks

Overall, this was a pretty decent draft class with a lot of players who will be making an impact at the NBA level in the next few years.

                            Team Options:

Caris Levert: accepted 2-year team option
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson: accepted 1 year team option
Chris McCollough: accepted 1 year team option
                            Isaiah Whitehead: declined team option
Jeremy Lin: accepted 1 year player option

                            Qualifying Offers:

Yogi Ferrell: did not extend a qualifying offer

                            My Free Agents:

Brook Lopez: signed to 1 year/$13M deal. For his ability level, this is a much better price tag and it will still give us the option to move him if we choose.
Andrew Bogut: signed 2 year/$3.32M deal
Trevor Booker: signed 2 year/$3.01M deal
Sean Kilpatrick: signed 1 year/$1.13M deal. When he has been on the court, he has played well for us. We are going to give him 1 more season to see if he can stay healthy for us.
Isaiah Whitehead: signed 2 year/$2.31M deal
Yogi Ferrell: We let him walk. He has not played much in his time and we can add better depth at point guard.
Thomas Robinson: We wanted to resign him because he played well on the defensive side of the ball for us but he wanted to test free agency. We will try and pursue him thru the free agency market.

                            Position Change:

Being more built like a power forward at the NBA level, we moved Shaun Bridgeman from C to PF. He is now listed as a PF with secondary at C and this increased his overall by 2.

                            Trade Alert:

Before the start of Free Agency, we finally made a few trades to address our lack of draft picks in the future.

We first traded PG Jeremy Lin to Milwaukee for a 2021 1st round pick (top 5 protected). This trade will benefit both teams. It will give the Bucks a starting point guard, and it should give us a lottery pick in a few years. Lin played well for us in the few years he was here, but realistically never had a future with this team. It was good for ticket sales to have Linsanity on the floor, but never really improved our team. Shelvin Mack will be a serviceable point guard until we find out point guard of the future. We have some faith that Milwaukee will struggle and get us a lottery pick because all 5 of their draft picks this year were under 70 overall.

Next we traded Chris McCollough and a 2021 2nd round pick (swap best with Memphis) to Memphis for a 2022 1st rounder and a 2021 2nd round pick (swap worst with Brooklyn). With the change of Shaun Bridgeman to power forward and the hope we could land Thomas Robinson back for a few years, it meant that McCollough was not in our future plans for the Nets. He had limited playing time the last few years and is undersized at only 200 pounds at power forward. We do gain a first round pick for him in a few years. We were not concerned with the swap worst second rounder that we got from Memphis as that was not our goal. The Grizzles just traded off 2 of their main players for a couple of draft picks that will take time to develop. Again, we hope this first rounder could materialize into something bigger for us down the road.

Our goal this summer was to acquire more draft picks. I think we accomplished that by adding 2 first rounders into our future.

                            Free Agency:

We stayed semi quiet during free agency, really only pursuing 1 player we had been targeting for a while and that was Nerlens Noel.

C Nerlens Noel (78B): signed 3 year/$62.31M deal. We are excited about this. We have a great interior defender to help bolster our struggling defense. He will definitely have a long future on this team.
PF Thomas Robinson: signed 2 year/$4.88M deal. He played well for us last season and we made it a priority to bring him back to the Nets. Though he will not be the long term answer at power forward, he will still contribute in his tenure here.
PG Norris Cole (73B-): signed 2 year/$2.63M deal. With the trade of Jeremy Lin, Cole will provide some veteran depth at PG for us.
SG Tim Hardaway Jr. (73B-): signed 1 year/$1.22M deal. With Sean Kilpatrick prone to injury, Hardaway Jr. will provide some insurance for us.

                            Big Signings around the league:

Memphis made 2 big signings during free agency. They signed C Enes Kanter to a 3 year/$58.94M deal and C Greg Monroe to a 3 year/$43.19M deal.
New York, even after signing Giannis Antetokuonmpo the previous summer, resigned Carmelo Anthony to a 5 year/$170.20M deal. The question is though, will they still look to move one of these players since there is a clog at the small forward position for them or will they use the depth to their advantage and shoot up in the Atlantic.

Caris Levert and Shaun Bridgeman have both been progressing nicely and each went up 3 points overall from last season.

The draft class for the 2019 NBA draft was randomly generated with no changes or looking at the class.

                            Training Camp (untapped potential):

                            Nerlens Noel: B to B+

                            Phil Norman: B- to B

                            Players not returning:

Re: Changing the Brooklyn way: A Brooklyn Nets Dynasty

Welcome to another NBA season. It is time for the 2018-19 NBA season and another season to move our Brooklyn Nets forward in the right direction. We are coming off a 52 loss season, but still won 5 more games than the previous year. Before we delve in, I am going to review my goals to this point and what we have accomplished. One of our main goals was to dump big salaries, and we have partially done that. We have decided to let Brook Lopez hang around as he has shown he can be a mentor to young PF Shaun Bridgeman, but at a lower salary than before. Another goal was to help secure the future of this team through the draft. Though we have only drafted 2 players on our current team, we have acquired additional first round draft picks. We also finally own our own draft pick for this year. No more helping Boston become as strong as Cleveland in the East. One goal we have this year is to potentially draft our point guard of the future. There are some interesting point guard prospects in the early to mid-first round that could be that for us.

That being said, let’s look at how our roster shapes up this year:

Roster Assessment: Our roster is slowly moving in the right direction. We have Brook Lopez under a more reasonable salary of a 1 year contract. Depending on what happens at the all-star break, we may attempt to resign him on another 1 year contract and move him if we don’t move him this all-star break. With only 1 player with a rating of 80 or above, we are still a long way off from our vision of a dynasty team. We have some promising young talent on our team, especially now in the form of Nerlens Noel. We hope that he will be able to be a major defensive presence for us. His post offense is not the best, but with his rebounding ability, a chunk of his points should come off of second opportunities. Players such as Trevor Booker and Bojan Bogdanovic are no longer needed as both have been buried or will be on the depth chart. They will both be ideal candidates to move at the trade deadline.

                              Draft Picks owned:

                              2019: 1st round
2020: 1st round, 1st round (via Houston, lottery protected)
2021: 1st round, 1st round (via Milwaukee, top 5 protected), 2nd round (swap worst Memphis)
                              2022: 1st round, 1st round (via Memphis), 2nd round

Where last year we only had 5 picks in the next 4 drafts, we are now armed with 9 picks in the next 4 years, with 7 of those being first rounders.

Let’s take a look around the league and where we stand.

Here are the 2018-19 NBA Preseason 2k Power Rankings:

                              1. Golden State

                              23. New Orleans
                              24. Milwaukee
                              25. Orlando
                              26. Memphis
                              27. Minnesota
                              28. Atlanta
                              29. Brooklyn
                              30. Charlotte

We start off the year at 29th in the power rankings. We are not concerned. We are staying the course and will not have a knee jerk reaction based on preseason power rankings.

                              Prospect Profile, SF Phil Norman

Phil Norman is a 6’8”, 256 pound, 70 overall, B potential, small forward out of Bradley. He helped lead his team to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship and win an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. In his 1 season starting at Bradley, he averaged 21.6 points per game and 3.4 assists per game. The team unfortunately fell to a much stronger Arizona team in the first round. He has 2-star ability in three-point shooting, as well as layups and dunks. He has a 1-star rating in mid-range shooting. Our head scout tells us he does have the potential to be something special. He is a decent shooter, able to hit shots from anywhere on the court, and a skilled ball distributor. He will need to work on his defense, especially in terms of proper rotation and off ball defense to earn a starting spot on this roster. We drafted him for his potential as a sharp shooter, but is still classified as a raw prospect, according to the scouting reports. He will get limited playing time this year behind Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Bojan Bodganovic, but we will be paying very close attention to his defense when he is in the game. His weight is a bit high for the small forward position, as well. We may run him some at the small ball four over the first year or two to see how he handles that. If we go that route, rebounding will need to be a focus. Overall though, we feel his role in the future will be more of a 6th man role than anything else.

Stay tuned for our midseason update at the all-star game.
