Starting Over: A Cleveland Cavs Start Today MyLeague

    System: PS4
    Game: NBA 2k19
    Mode: MyLeague (Start Today)
    Sliders: schnaidt1 with minor tweaks

Well, this is gonna be interesting. The Cleveland Cavaliers have been less than stellar so far this year. Having their only star player being injured for most of the year doesn’t help, but minimal talent besides Kevin Love is no way to win games. This rebuild won’t be easy, but the goal is to make my favorite team into a new dynasty, post-Lebron era. (Btw I started this the day after the all star game, so I’m a little behind the season).

I am thinking of doing the posts like this: one week were I do a brief recap, stats, and takeaways for every game that week. Then in the next post I will highlight one game the next week where I go in depth with the recap of the game while quickly posting the scores from that same week.

Just saying, have some patience with this team. I want to keep it realistic but also fun. I’ll try to get back to my other dynasty, the Ohio State one, as well. Wish me luck!

Cavs Fire GM, Looking For New Direction

Cleveland, Ohio -- Today Koby Altman was fired as Cavaliers GM. Owner Dan Gilbert thanked Altman for his contributions to the club, but felt a different direction was needed for the club. The new GM was announced to be Riley Ankles. Not much is known about Ankles, but he has an idea of what to do with the club.

“Mr. [Dan] Gilbert and I have very similar visions on what this franchise needs to do to turn it around. Not much can be done now as it is late in the season, but moving forward things should be looking up.” - Riley Ankles

Cleveland sits at 12-46, second to last in the conference only to the Knicks. The Suns are the only team in the Western Conference with a worse record than the Cavaliers. The Cavs rank twenty ninth in the league in points per game (103.0), twenty second in opponents points per game, (113.5), twenty eighth field goal percentage (44.1%), and twenty eighth in steals per game (6.6). These are just some of the woes from the Cavs this year. They also saw J.R. Smith tell the front office he could no longer play for the team. Kevin Love was also injured for most of the season, only appearing in seven games so far this season.

The Cavs will face the Suns in a few days, and then the Grizzlies later in the week.

What a battle...for the first pick in the draft. If the Cavs are looking to win the game, then they must attack Luke Babbitt as much as possible with both Kevin Love and Larry Nance Jr. As for the Suns, they need to take advantage of one of the few benches in the league that is worse than their own.

Another lowly team for the Cavs to face. To beat the Grizzlies the Cavs must play good enough defense and be able to score. They don't need to play perfectly, but it would help to make a few shots and play some defense.

        Game Breakdown:
The Cavs faced off against the Suns tonight and won 94-86. Kevin Love led the way for the Cavs with twenty two and thirteen. He also led the team with three threes. Collin Sexton had a solid seventeen points, but only one assist for the point guard. That’s something he has been struggling with this year. The other three starters also dropped double digit points. The Suns saw little production from anyone other than Devin Booker, dropping twenty five points. Deandre Ayton did have seventeen rebounds, but only eleven points. The Cavs found themselves being outplayed in many key categories such as shooting percentage, fast break points, and bench points, but the Cavs clearly dominated in making Phoenix turn the ball over. The Suns had twelve turnovers to the Cavs five.

One thing to take away from this game is that the Cavs held a very large lead in the third. Then they looked as if they were going to give it up, but stuck with it and held on. I don’t know if it looked better that they held on or worse that they blew such a big lead in the first place. New GM Riley Ankles sat courtside tonight. He spoke to us on the first game of his tenure afterwards.

“It was a great game. I liked getting out to the early lead and keeping it. I was also glad to see us hit the free throws as well as we did. That was really exciting! Can’t wait to watch more of these guys!” - Riley Ankles

The Cavs face one of the tougher teams in the league Monday night, as they have a date with Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers. This team loves putting the ball in the hoop, so the Cavs main focus has to be scoring more than these last two games. Under 100 points won't result in a win against the Blazers.

A team similar to the Suns, the Knicks pose no chance against a Cavs team who has found their groove. This will, however, hurt the Cavs chances of obtaining the top pick in this summer's draft, but wins are just as important.

The Pistons are a mediocre team that excels in some categories, but then in other categories they are among the worst in the league. Boasting a top notch big man duo of Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond, the Pistons still don't find themselves in a playoff spot in the east.

The young Cavs core was able to take two of three games this week, dropping the first against the Trail Blazers but beating the Knicks and Pistons. The win against the Pistons was very nice as it is a team currently in the playoff picture. GM Riley Ankles talked about the team’s past week.

“It was a good showing by a group of guys ready to compete. That’s what the team has been looking for all year and finally we are ready to put in work.” - GM Ankles

Ankles was putting in work just like his team this week as he signed Matthew Dellavedova and Jordan Clarkson to extensions. Delly signed a one year, $1.51M deal, while Clarkson got a three year, $18.14M deal. The Cavs GM talked about the Clarkson signing on Friday, saying, “We have a vision and he [Clarkson] is apart of it. What can I say, a hefty price tag is worth the outcome of my vision.” When asked what exactly his vision was, Ankles replied with, “You’ll find out in due time.” - Ankles

In other news Collin Sexton won rookie of the month for the East, the first time this year. Sexton averaged 20.7 PPG this month, and averaged 24.3 PPG this week. Sexton is slowly climbing the ranks of top of the draft class. Being drafted outside the top five Sexton still has shown the immense talent he brings to the Cavs.

The Cavs started the week with a win against the Magic and ended with a loss in Miami, but the game against the Nets showed some promise for the future. With Kevin Love sitting out with his minor oblique injury suffered versus Orlando, the young Cavalier core took it to the a team in the mix for a playoff spot.

The Cavs started off strong well in the first half taking a six point lead that felt much larger. The second half was much more back and forth as Cleveland had apparent struggles rebounding over Jarrett Allen and Ed Davis. Yet the Cavs still held on from a very balanced approach from starters and bench players alike. Two bench players for the Cavaliers, Marquese Chriss and Brandon Knight, played twenty minutes. The Cleveland bench combined for thirty points, very impressive performance compared to the lackluster season thus far from the Cavs bench. In the end the Cavs bench was too strong, along with the team’s free throw shooting, shooting 42 free throws and making 34 (81%).

Collin Sexton played very well, scoring 21 points and shooting 10-12 at the free throw line. When asked after the game about getting to the free throw line twelve times, Sexton said, “They knew I’d make [the layup] if they didn’t foul me.”

Kevin Love’s replacement for this week was Larry Nance Jr. who played impressively, dropping 13 points and shooting an efficient 5-8 on field goals.

As for Kevin Love, he sat out both the Brooklyn and Miami games for more precautionary reasons rather than actually being injured. The thirty year old suffered a toe injury earlier in the year that forced him out of action for several months. Cavaliers general manager Riley Ankles said “Kevin is one of the best at what he does, and there is no reason having him play and, as a result, having to sit him out longer because of him worsening his injury. We discussed the decision with Kevin and he fully understands the where the organization stands in the situation.”

The Cavs are ready to welcome Kevin back next week as they face three teams currently in the playoffs.

At least they're staying competitive. But at the end of the day, it'll be better for Cleveland to end up with one of the worst three records. Don't let Adam Silver hear me say that though lol
