Re: Worst loss you've experienced as a fan

The one I can remember vividly was BC losing to Florida State in '07 while ranked #2 and 4 wins away from a National Title Berth. I remember falling asleep in and out of that game, and going to bed pissed when Ryan threw the Pick 6 to Geno Hayes in the 4th.

For USC, that embarrassing loss to Washington in '09 sticks out, Washington obviously coming off that 0-12 the year prior. IIRC, we didn't have Barkley playing (injured) and I believe Aaron Corp was the QB that day. You get the picture....

Obviously, the '06 Rose Bowl sucks too, for reasons I don't need to explain.

13-9.

'Nuff said.

For those who don't get the reference: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=273350277

Not only losing to a 4-7 rival who was a terrible team, but then to lose it in such choking fashion. The offense was was supposed to be great chokes up 7 points. Pat White fumbles the football on a pass play where he just basically throws the ball backwards. He gets injured. Pitt makes a few crucial third down conversions late. WVU gets the ball back for one last chance, but manages to get into a fourth-and-long situation and White's 4th-and-18 pass doesn't even land inbounds where Wes Lyons can get a hand on it. Then, to top it off, the national title opponent (Ohio State) gets throttled in the National Title game, so the loss probably cost WVU a national title (and not just a berth in the title game).

The blowout of Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl did help to dull the pain some, though.

07 was a crazy year. South Florida also reached #2, I believe the week after BC lost.

Then they lost to Rutgers, either that next week or the following week.

I remember 13-9 also. I am very sorry, SuperJames.

As a Texas Tech fan it would have to be the game vs Oklahoma in 2008. Coming off an upset of #1 Texas and a beat down of #7 Oklahoma State 56-20, we went into Norman and did...absolutely awful. We lost by 40, we were #2 at the time and 2 wins from a Big 12 championship appearance, 3 wins away from the national championship game.

Yep, Thursday night at Rutgers after USF had previously defeated WVU in Tampa.

Lots of Thursday night upsets that year, IIRC.

Then USF flamed out the remainder of the season and ended 9-4.

EDIT: Oops, it was a Saturday night when Rutgers defeated USF.

However, Rutgers did defeat #3 Louisville in Piscataway in 2006 on a Thursday night with a game-winning kick and they rose way up on the polls before getting upset by Cincinnati later in the season. I remember watching that at a hotel when I was on vacation in Boston.

Rutgers lost in 3OT to WVU in the final regular season game at home and ended 11-2 after winning their bowl game.

2005-2007 were fun times as a WVU fan... 2011 was nice with the Orange Bowl blowout, but the season itself was somewhat lackluster with a 9-3 record and some close wins and a bad loss or two.
