Next Xbox To Have No Disc Drive

Goodbye to Used Games??

I personally can't see myself buying Steam for my big screen. If this happens, then Sony might get my money. If Sony goes the same route, Nintendo might just pull it out from my pocket honestly.

Re: Next Xbox To Have No Disc Drive

As I said in another thread, it's at least a generation premature, unless the cartridges they describe can also be purchased at retail with the game on them and you have the ability to completely circumvent the digital distribution model.

Thus far with Xbox Live Games on Demand and on the PSN (especially PSP Go), digital distribution just leads to higher prices for everything and infrequent sales inferior to what you see in the store.

I know some people who dont know how to do anything on their consoles
besides play games. There will be alot of people that wouldnt really know how to buy the games off stream.
Not only used games and sales, it would eliminate trade-ins. I like trading in games. Especially, to save for newer games. I dont want to pay full price for EVERY game I want to buy. Especially if there isnt a decrease in price of games.

If Sony considers doing this also, this opens up a doorway for a company to come into the gaming realm. I think they're trying to do the same thing that Apple did with music but it's a totally different realm. I could really see Sega making a comeback if something like this blindly makes a way into stores. Honestly, if that happens, then I'd buy a Wii U and game strictly on a new computer I'd plan on buying.

Interesting, but just a rumor for now. I'm all for digital distribution if its done right like Steam. If Microsoft does head this route I'll be interested to see if they go straight digital distribution like Steam or they go to a flash based cartridge route like Vita.

I do more gaming than ever on the PC though now, so I might no even buy the next round of consoles.

Re: Next Xbox To Have No Disc Drive

yeah i dont see this happening at all. If it did, like I said before, it would be the end of any new gaming for me.
Dont prefer digital, wont only buy digital.

From what Digital Foundry was hearing last year:

Quote:
It's also believed that Microsoft will continue its successful two SKU strategy, and indeed take it much further with its new platform: a pared down machine is to be released as cheaply as possible, and positioned more along the lines of a set-top box (the use of 360 as a Netflix viewing platform in the US is colossal) and perhaps as a Kinect-themed gaming portal, while a more fully-featured machine with optical drive, hard disk and backward compatibility aimed at the hardcore would be released at a higher price-point.
