I have an A+ rating now so I'm hoping after a couple of years of improving Ole Miss (they were 6-6 before I took them over and the cupboard is pretty bare) I can get a job at Texas, Florida or Miami who appear to be on the verge of firing their respective coaches.

So basically my advice would be to start at someplace lower than a middle of the road power conference team or at least start as a coordinator. There's not much room to move up starting as a HC in a power conference.
That's all very well at the beginning of your career but what about 10 years down the road when you are an established head coach?

I can't wait to see what offers I get after this year. I'm in the last year of my contract as the DC at Florida State. We finished the year ranked 22 last year, and are currently 6-1 (4-0) and ranked 4th in the country.

I'm in my second year as the DC for Wyoming. Wow the offense stinks, but I did notice that the offense seems to do better when I chose to watch the play instead of just simming until the Defense is back on the field.

what i've learned is to temper your expectations.

especially if you want a prime HC job.

Re: Your Experience with Coaching Carousel?

If you are at Arizona and you've made them into a 6 star program, just refuse to sign extensions. When your contract expires, there will be offers... provided you are lucky enough to have your contract end when other "good" jobs open up because they fired/retired their HC.

With regards to a real life example of why a coach would rather stay at a small school they built up as opposed to leaving for a traditional powerhouse, just look at Oregon and Chip Kelly. He's help build that program into a perennial NC contender. You think UF, ND, Michigan or OSU are going to waste their time offering him a contract? Didn't work for Michigan trying to take Les Miles either, and he's Michigan alum.

My expectations were shot down big time

I thought for sure I'd get some major conference HC offers, but the only one I got was 0-12 Vanderbilt, and a bunch of others at crappy Sun Belt, MAC, and WAC schools. And a bunch of random DC offers.

Ended up back at FSU for 2 years. I hope I'm not doomed to be a coordinator forever

If you keep doing really well for the school, the HC will never get fired. Hopefully he's old!

You might have just had bad luck with a lot of the schools you wanted a job having HC's that still had years to go on their contracts and/or the HCs not doing bad enough to get fired. Took me until my 7th season to get the HC job at FSU. I started as a DC at North Texas for 3 seasons of misery, went to Louiville as a DC for season 4, then the HC at UVA for 3 seasons before I got lucky and FSU refused to rehire Jimbo Fisher, and then offered me the job.
