FIFA 16 Teach Me How/Strategy Thread

I figured I would make a thread that doesn't cause too much clutter.

I'm a casual fan. Can someone give me a good strategy on playing better defense?

Also, it would be nice for anyone that has questions and people who can help!

This would be great! Im a first time Fifa / Any Soccer video game player! Im a little overwhelmed right off the bat here.

Question: What mode / gameplay would be best for a brand new player to start out with?

I learned so much from playing Manager Mode on a low difficulty in FIFA 03 on my PS2 and just absolutely crushing through. At the time, I was just starting to follow the sport and also there was hardly any way to watch it in the US so I was just messing around and enjoying a game based on a sport involving teams and a culture i knew nothing about.

My recommendation - play a low difficulty MM as a big club in each of the big leagues (English Premier League, Spain's La Liga, the German Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1 & Italy's Serie A). You'll get the chance to see almost every team that matters and every player that matters and you'll likely find one you love and it might change the entire course of your life like the first screamer I hit with Stevie did for me in 2005. 8 years later I'm watching Suarez score in front of me on the Anfield Road end.

***I'm assuming you're not already a football fan. If you are, i apologize for over-simplifying explanations.

I only answered the last question but i saw that both previous posts were about strategy. As far as playing better defense, one thing you'll find (especially as a casual fan) is you'll have the overwhelming urge to hold down sprint and rush the player in possession. Don't do that. If you make a conscious effort to contain the ball as it moves and think of it more like "herding" than "seek and destroy", you'll be lightyears ahead of other casual players and honestly, ahead of a lot of seasoned players too.

What you'll notice when you do this consistently and get good at it is the CPU will eventually give you the ball - it's hard to watch them move freely but resist every urge to tackle. Only make tackles once you've mastered the art of forcing turnovers through pinching the offense into a point where their only choice is to turn the ball over to you. And then, once you incorporate tackles, be patient and recognize when they "show you the ball". FIFA does a good job (especially this year) of giving you opportunities through bad touches (typically following one of those "bullet passes"). Watch for those and don't overuse sprint or tackle and i promise you you'll concede fewer goals.

One basic fundamental of defending that can be added into this, do not drag your centre half out to the wings (or basically out of position) unless you're left with no other option.

The closest player to the ball should always be going to it, dragging players away is what the opposition wants, space is made, ball is played to space, oppo player picks it up, bang, goal.

Using Legacy defending, my best tip is to control your DM, and use variations of secondary pressure (tapping the button, holding it down, etc) from there. I will also control the player that is not directly marking the ball carrier. Instead I will control a player to the right or left of the marker, and use secondary pressure from there.

This video from 15 gives an idea of how I play:

My tip for defending is to try to keep your shape. Also I try to mix up pressing and trying to take the ball and just trying to contain the opponent and block the passing lanes. My recommendation is to watch some real soccer matches and then try defending like what you saw. That's essentially where I got my strategy from. Best of luck to you though.

One thing I stopped doing was holding X for me and/or R1 for teammates to pressure the ball. Seems to get my defense stretched too much and they move the ball around into the open space.

I try to be a DM and keep between the ball and open passes in the middle.

Keep in mind I'm not very good and play professional but haven't given up many goals

Use LT/L2 and strafe with the offensive guys.

                    My questions.

                    1. When controlling a defender, can you make your goalie rush a kicker? It's so frustrating when he just stands there and makes a horrible falling down attempt at stopping a shot.

                    2. On offense - In '14 I thought you could do this, but could never figure it back out in '15... Can you pass the ball and immediately have the passer start streaking down field for a through pass? A give and go is what I would call it.

                    3. What is the best skill move for a mis-direction? My friends are equally bad at the game. For a while I could just not use turbo and use LT/L2 to stop the ball and cut away, but they eventually caught on. Being able to do some fakes I think would be highly effective for me.

I Played 09, 14 and now 16. And for the first time I'm starting to try to be better and learned more stuff. I think I would be right on the first 2 questions, but for the 3rd one, I have a hard time dribble thru defenders. I suggest going to see the controls in the settings from time to time. You can't learn them all in once, but you go see, you practice it within a few games and then you try to learn a new one. That is what I do and i'm starting to use more type of passes. I used to only push on X for passes, now I am using not only Triangle square and X but also the driven pass and other type of passes. Same for the shots, i used to only use circle, but now I am thinking to do the chip or finesse shot when needed, which I was unable not so long ago.

                      That video could help you

Also I suggest you Watch the videos from this same guy. He does great videos, very clear and useful.

                      Hope this helps

Thanks for the tip! I am indeed very new to international soccer, and not much better with Team USA / MLS. Ive always wanted to get into soccer and i thought FIFA 16 could help.

                          Lot of great tips here...

My main one is on defense do not chase the ball! This will get you beat and lose your defensive shape making other people open as well. Sit back and close off passing lanes. If you understand basketball strategy it is similar, deny direct access to the goal, by staying between your guy and the goal and make passing lanes as small as humanly possible. Taking the ball away is risky and when you miss it leads to goals. Instead give away nothing easy and make the CPU earn the goals. They will turn the ball over if you keep shape.

I learned defense by watching defensive drills and tips for real footballers on YouTube. Double win as I became a better soccer player IRL as well. Same with formations, watched coaching vids and read coaching guides. This year more than ever the game does resemble real football. So, any coaching guide to soccer on the internet will help. Side note, I had played soccer to have something to do when it was not softball season. Now, thanks to this and hard work am playing varsity at my High School. It sounds lame but FIFA and PES made me a better player, mostly because it lead me to learning higher level tactics, and skill sets.

On offense remeber the ball can move faster than you can run. Thus, good teamwork will trump beating people one v one. Plus, when you get better, you will not be winning on World Class simply dribbling around defenders. Learn to pass and try new things. To me passing the ball forward and then a through ball to the original passer as he makes a run past is affective. Do not be afraid to lob the ball when passing.

My final tip is take a good team... While I have a blast taking low level squads and making them better. When learning FIFA it is simplest to take a powerhouse squad with world class players. This way you will know if what you did worked or failed. With lower rated players sometimes what you did was not the isssue but just the lads lack of abillity to do it.

Ok so I cannot complete *the triple tap cross pass at all. *Are my thumbs too slow or what? *I spent an entire game trying to complete it and it only worked once. *The rest of the time it did just a pop up pass turn over every time as soon as I hit the cross button for the second time. *Do I just suck or am I missing something?*

The only answer I can think of which sounds like I'm being condescending (which I promise, I'm not) is yes, yes you are tapping it too slowly. It's hard to describe but it should go about the speed of a double click on a mouse, only with a third tap. That's it, no trick to it.

You're not missing out on a whole lot tbh, it doesn't work nearly as good as last year. They even eliminated the corner kick triple-tap guaranteed goal from last year too.
