Wombat's UFC 5 Simulation AI vs AI Sliders and AI Styles

    What’s up, everybody!

For UFC 5 I have been working on an AI vs AI slider set that replicates the type of action that you would see on a UFC broadcast any given Saturday. After countless fights and experimenting with different slider settings, I think I have put together a pretty solid slider set for now.

With these sliders I have seen a wide variety of outcomes including, fast paced fights, slow paced fights, extremely close fights, dominant performances, upset victories, unanimous decisions, split decisions, first round knockouts, submissions, ground and pound TKO’s, doctor stoppages, and much more. On default settings, it seemed like every AI vs AI fight that I watched was a slugfest/bloodbath that would end in a knockout or doctor stoppage. In actual fights, fighters being knocked out cold doesn’t happen very often, and doctor stoppages are few and far between. With the default sliders there was hardly any variation from fight to fight like you see in actual UFC fights. Having variation in fights was a very important aspect that I kept in mind when developing these sliders, because anything can happen in a fight.

In addition to the variety of outcomes, during the fights I’m also seeing things like a realistic number of signature and total strikes thrown per round, realistic percentages for strikes landed, limited spinning strikes, AI attempting takedown attempts at appropriate times, no AI clinch spamming, realistic fighter fatigue, no over the top cuts or swelling, and there is rarely a doctors stoppage.

With all that being said, please test out these sliders out for yourself if AI vs AI gameplay is something that you are interested in. I would love to hear your thoughts and the type of outcomes and fights that you are getting with these sliders. Please note, I will always be looking to improve this slider set, so it could be revised depending on further observations and how future patches affect AI gameplay. Also, I know this set may not produce gameplay that everyone is satisfied with, so feel free to use this as a base and adjust to meet your desired gameplay. These sliders have been tested with the latest patch (2/9/2024).

If you want to see even better fights, I would recommend taking a look at my next few posts on this thread related to AI styles. This could even be helpful if you are a USER vs AI player that is looking to make your AI opponents fight more like they would in real life.

Re: Wombat's UFC 5 Simulation AI vs AI Sliders and AI Styles

To get even more realistic results from the AI vs AI slider set that I have developed, I have taken a closer look at some of the AI styles in UFC 5. I’m sure most of you know about the AI style feature, but in case you don’t you can actually choose the AI style for each fighter in a fight. You can do this by going into the “Open Settings” (Square on PS and X on Xbox) option from the initial Fight Now screen where you select the type of fight, game style, weight class, difficulty, and venue. From there you can scroll over to the AI Behavior tab and select the AI style for both corners.

Many of the fighters in the game have their own AI style, but there are also many that do not have a dedicated AI style. However, there are 11 categories of AI styles with different variations of that style included. The 11 categories include; Brawler, Ground and Pound, Greco Roman, MMA, Muay Thai, Striker, Submission Specialist, Wrestler, Power Boxer, Clinch Brawler, and Off the Back Submission Artist. Like I mentioned, each category includes variations of that style (Example: Brawler, Brawler II, Brawler III, etc.), and in some cases 5 or more variations. Unfortunately, there is no description for the different style variations, so it makes it difficult to know what the tendencies and overall style of that variation is.

I have made an effort to discover the tendencies and styles of each variation and write brief descriptions for them. I did this by creating CAF’s and assigning one of the style variations to them. I made the CAF’s fighter type align with the variation (Example: Kickboxer type with Striker style, MMA type with MMA style, etc.) and then I would put the CAF’s against each other and try to pick up on their nuances and tendencies for 2-3 fights. I was able to put together a brief description for each style variation based on my observations from their fights. The descriptions for each are below.

Keep in mind, these descriptions were formed from my own personal observations, so these descriptions may not accurately represent what you see when you use certain AI styles for different fighters. The AI style paired with different fighter types could result in gameplay that differs from these descriptions, but my hope is that this will be helpful in assigning an AI style that more accurately represents that fighters real life style than the default AI style that is initially assigned to each fighter.

Brawler Variations (Note: There are two Brawler IX styles that can be selected from the styles. The Brawler IX2 style occurs in the list after Gunnar Nelson.)
Brawler - Active and aggressive style, constantly pressuring opponents with a dynamic blend of punches and kicks.
Brawler II - Patient fighter that favors precise punches, especially jabs and straights, while timing power shots as a counter puncher. Incorporates occasional clinches, utilize lead leg kicks, and tries to maintains distance during the fight.
Brawler III - Defensively minded boxer puncher that prioritizes head movement, occasionally looks for takedowns.
Brawler IV - Good movement and footwork, looks to get on the inside and throw uppercuts and knee strikes.

MMA - A true mixed martial artist that utilizes all facets of MMA, including a wide array of strikes (elbows, knees, clinch strikes), clinch attempts, takedowns, and submissions.
MMA II - Mixed martial artist that relies on striking first and mixes in a few takedowns and clinch attempts.
MMA III - Fighter that relies on pressure and power punches in the stand up and ground and pound on the ground.

Muay Thai Variations (Note: There are two Muay Thai II styles that can be selected from the styles. The Muay Thai II2 style occurs in the list after Cory Sandhagen.)
Muay Thai - A traditional Muay Thai fighter that likes to get in the clinch to throw elbows and knees.
Muay Thai II - A fighter that does not move backwards and will occasionally try to catch opponent off guard with unorthodox strikes out of nowhere, such as a Superman punch or a question mark kick.
Muay Thai II2 (after Cory Sandhagen)- Aggressive fighter that will walk down opponents, try to interrupt their striking flow and get them in the clinch.
Muay Thai III - Defensive fighter that keeps his guard up at all times. Likes to wear down opponents by throwing a lot of body punches.

Striker Variations (Note: There are two Striker V styles that can be selected from the styles. The Striker V2 style occurs in the list after Brawler XI.)
Striker - Patient but will close the distance quickly and throw a barrage of strikes at opponent.
Striker II - Outside fighter that throws feints to try bait opponent into a power shot.
Striker III - Defensive fighter that uses head movement to try and land counter shots.
Striker IV - Flashy striker that throws spinning strikes in abundance.
Striker V - Striker that primarily boxes. Will switch stances often and mix up punches to the head and body.
Striker V2 (after to Brawler XI) - A patient fighter that likes to fight from the outside, but will unload heavy combinations and clinch if the opponent gets inside.

    Submission Specialist Variations
Submission Specialist - Looks for the takedown early and will quickly move to a dominant position. will attempt a submission from any position.
Submission Specialist II - Sets up takedowns with strikes and will only go for submissions when in a dominant position on the ground.
Submission Specialist III - Likes to dominate opponent with ground and pound before attempting submission.

    Wrestler Variations

Wrestler II - Doesn’t rush the takedown, and is patient with transition opportunities. Favors submission attempts over heavy ground and pound.
Wrestler III - Wrestler with strong ground and pound and will even throw heavy strikes from the bottom. Not afraid to stand and strike.
Wrestler IV - Transition heavy wrestler that is always looking for reversal opportunities.
Wrestler V - Prefers to do damage striking and will only shoot for takedowns once opponent is hurt. Picks shots on the ground carefully.
Wrestler VII - Likes to initiate the clinch and get the fight to the ground from there.

    Power Boxer Variations
Power Boxer - Inside fighter that uses leg kicks to get in the pocket and land power punches.
Power Boxer II - Boxer that uses feints and body shots to set up haymakers.

    Clinch Brawler Variations
Clinch Brawler - Likes to move around the cage a lot. Will strike at a distance, but tries to close the distance quickly with flashy strikes and combinations to initiate the clinch and do damage with elbows and knees.
Clinch Brawler II - Not much of a combination striker. Looks for power strikes to hurt opponent and enter the clinch.

Off the Back Submission Artist Variations
Off the back submission artist - Doesn’t mind being taken down and will quickly go for a submission in bottom position.
Off the back submission artist II - Attempts takedowns frequently and more often than not goes for a submission. Will look for submission reversals when an opponent attempts takedowns.

There are 3 other AI styles that don’t have any variations.
Elite Kick Boxer - A fighter that throws a variety of kicks, knees, and elbows to wear down opponent.
Long Range Boxer - Focuses on maintaining distance by using jabs, crosses, and movement.
Long Range Striker - Tactical fighter that maintains distance, utilizes precision strikes and footwork to control the range.

Re: Wombat's UFC 5 Simulation AI vs AI Sliders and AI Styles

Now that there are descriptions for each AI style variation, I have made a list of all the fighters in UFC 5 and assigned the AI style that I think most appropriately align with their real life fighting style. Any fighter that has their own AI style in the game has been assigned their own style. Fighters that do not have their own AI style have been assigned one of the AI style variants from my previous post (with the exception of Islam Makhachev. I have assigned him Khabib’s style).

There are around 300 fighters included in this list, and honestly I’m not an expert on every single one of their fighting styles, so I’m sure some of these fighters could be reclassified to another style variation that could more accurately represent their real life fighting style. I’m totally open to suggestions and recommendations that can result in better AI style matches for fighters, so please provide feedback and feel free to conduct your own testing with the different AI styles for fighters. Again, my hope is that this information will provide a solid foundation for realistic AI vs AI gameplay in UFC 5.

Thanks a lot, man! I plan on starting an AI vs AI universe mode soon too. That was actually my main motivation to develop this slider set. It’s cool to hear other people do this kind of thing too. Let me know how the sliders work for you!

So these aren't suggested for 1p vs AI?

Also, are these generic archetype tendicies already assigned to the fighters you have listed? Or we have to go in and change them to what you are suggesting in your post?

That’s right. These sliders were specifically created to produce realistic AI vs AI gameplay. I wouldn't recommend using them for user vs AI gameplay as is. You could possibly use them as a base and adjust the sliders from there, but I haven’t done any testing on how these play 1p vs AI.

Also, that is correct about the AI styles. Each corner is assigned the default AI style to begin with, so you have to go into the settings prior to the fight and set the style for them. It’s a bit of a pain to do, but I think the results that I’m seeing are worth it, at least for the AI vs AI gameplay.

There is actually another thread that has a realistic user vs AI slider set. I tested those out a while back and had a few great fights.

Here is a link to that thread:

Will do! Not sure about the AI tendencies because that would require doing each fight in fight now right? Or can you adjust in event mode for each fight?

Yeah, unfortunately event mode doesn't even allow you to select the AI style at all for any of the fights since all of the settings and sliders have to be adjusted prior to finishing the event. If you want to use the AI styles along with these sliders, each fight will have to be done in fight now.

Doing all of the fights in fight now is how I plan to do my universe, so I'm going to keep track of events manually via a spreadsheet. I really wish there was already a mode like this in the game so players that enjoy this sort of thing wouldn't have to jump through hoops to pull it off, but it is what it is. Hopefully they consider adding a mode like this in a future game.

Re: Wombat's UFC 5 Simulation AI vs AI Sliders and AI Styles

I did a simulation of the co-main from this past Saturday with my slider set and then did a comparison of the actual fight.

The result was the same, Rountree by KO in the 3rd! The stats ended up being somewhat similar too. More significant strikes thrown and landed at a higher percentage in the actual fight, but slightly more total strikes thrown in the UFC 5 simulation. Smith was 0 for 2 in takedowns in both lol. Rountree won with a left hand in the actual fight and with a front kick in my simulation.

                      Pretty awesome indeed.

When I first got the game, I played as Alvarez vs McGregor and the fight went almost exactly as their real MSG fight did. Thought that was cool.

This is for pro difficulty. I accidentally left the difficulty out of the sliders. I have added it to the slider set in the initial post. Sorry about that!

That’s actually a pretty important piece too. All of the research I’ve done says that pro is the best difficulty for AI vs AI gameplay. Apparently pro difficulty is the difficulty that devs use to test out the AI, or so I’ve read. All of my testing has been done on pro and I like what I’m seeing.

Used these setting last night...I gotta say, WHAT A DIFFERENCE.

I never realized how much they engaged and punched and kicked etc etc until I reset the parameters with your settings.

So much sitting back out of range and picking and choosing shots. Meaningful and sensible takedown attempts, etc etc...

                              Very well done.

I am going to set the AI with these attriubtes too, and play against it to see if I can recreate that with 1p vs AI.
