Coaching Career of Lee Williamson (CFB 25)

Alright, after some time away and testing sliders, etc., I am back! I will be using Canes21's Heisman sliders and implementing some recruiting house rules to keep things from getting too easy, as I eventually found in my WVU dynasty I was running (the game difficulty was fine, but the team's OVR just got too good due to unrealistic recruiting).

This time I'll be rolling with a "career" dynasty, though I'll be starting as a head coach as I don't really enjoy just being OC / DC. I'll be starting with the Kennesaw State Owls since they're new to FBS and tied for the worst team in the game. Their roster is young, but bad, and the situation at quarterback isnt' great, either, so it should be tough.

Lee Williamson Takes Helm as Head Coach for Kennesaw State’s Historic Jump to FBS Football

Kennesaw, GA – In a groundbreaking move that marks a new era for Kennesaw State University football, Lee Williamson has been named the head coach of the Owls as the program transitions to FBS competition for the 2024 season. Williamson, known for his tenacious approach to coaching and a keen eye for talent, brings a blend of experience, leadership, and drive that university officials believe will be pivotal in establishing Kennesaw State's identity on the national stage.

Athletic Director Milton Overstreet introduced Williamson to an enthusiastic crowd of students, alumni, and media on Tuesday afternoon, calling the hire “a pivotal moment in the history of Kennesaw State athletics.”

"Lee embodies everything we’re looking for in a leader," Overstreet said. "He has a reputation for developing players, a proven record of success, and an understanding of what it takes to build a program. We’re excited to watch him lead us through this new challenge."

Williamson, who previously found success as a head coach at both the high school and lower level collegiate levels, comes to Kennesaw State with a reputation for high-octane spread offense and a disciplined defensive approach. Known for molding young talent and instilling a relentless work ethic, he wasted no time outlining his vision for the Owls.

“We’re here to win, and we’re here to build something that lasts,” Williamson said during his first press conference. “I’m beyond excited to work with these young men and this university to create a football program that can compete at the highest level. We’re stepping into a new league, and we’re going to do it the right way—with hard work, discipline, and a belief in each other.”

This will be Kennesaw State’s inaugural season competing in the FBS ranks, a significant leap that has generated excitement among fans and alumni. With the move comes a chance to compete against top-tier programs, and Williamson emphasized that the team will embrace both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Players are already buzzing about the hire, with several voicing excitement about the new leadership. Linebacker Donelius Johnson, who will return as one of the defense’s key leaders, said Williamson’s energy is already evident.

“Coach Williamson has made it clear that he’s here to make us better in every way—on and off the field,” Johnson shared. “We’re excited to show what Kennesaw State football is all about, and with him leading us, I know we’re going to make some noise.”

Williamson also stressed the importance of creating a lasting culture at Kennesaw State, one that goes beyond football and prepares athletes for life. "It’s about developing men, not just players," he said. "We’re going to be a team that’s strong on the field, responsible in the classroom, and engaged in the community. That’s how we’re going to build something special here."

As the countdown begins for the Owls’ first FBS season, fans and university officials alike have placed high hopes in Williamson’s leadership. The new coach has already begun assembling his staff, reportedly prioritizing individuals who share his commitment to discipline, innovation, and a player-centered approach.

With Williamson at the helm, Kennesaw State’s transition to FBS is more than just a step up in competition—it’s a statement. The Owls are ready to soar, and their new head coach is leading the way.

Re: Coaching Career of Lee Williamson (CFB 25)

Roadrunners Pull Away Late to Spoil Owls' FBS Debut

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Kennesaw State’s inaugural game as a full FBS member ended in heartbreak as the UTSA Roadrunners surged in the fourth quarter to secure a 23-16 victory on Saturday. The Owls showed promise under first-year head coach Lee Williamson, keeping the game within reach until the final minutes but ultimately falling short.

The Owls (1-0) got on the board first with a 48-yard field goal from Austin Welch in the first quarter, staking an early 3-0 lead. Welch would prove instrumental throughout, hitting all three of his field goal attempts and accounting for 10 of the Owls' 16 points.

Kennesaw State’s Qua Ashley found the end zone late in the second quarter on a 2-yard run, extending the Owls’ lead to 10-3. However, UTSA kicker Chase Allen answered with his own 42-yard field goal just before halftime, narrowing the gap to 10-6.

The two teams traded field goals in the third quarter, but UTSA (1-0) capitalized on a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Robert Henry Jr. to tie the game at 13-13 heading into the fourth.

UTSA then took command in the final quarter. Kevorian Barnes’ 10-yard touchdown run with 8:21 left gave the Roadrunners their first lead at 20-13. Allen followed up with a 20-yard field goal to make it 23-13 with just over five minutes remaining. Welch hit a short field goal with just under two minutes left to cut UTSA's lead to a touchdown, 23-16. Kennesaw State's defense was able to force a UTSA punt and get one last chance to drive for a game-tying score with a little over a minute left, but Kennesaw State quarterback Davis Bryson threw his third interception of the game on their last-chance drive to seal the game for UTSA.

Bryson struggled against a tough Roadrunners secondary, completing 16 of 34 passes for 152 yards but throwing three costly interceptions. The Owls' ground game, however, provided some balance, with Qua Ashley rushing for 66 yards on 16 carries and Michael Benefield adding 59 yards on 15 attempts.

“We had our chances, but turnovers and missed opportunities hurt us,” Williamson reflected after the game. “The effort was there, and we’ll clean up the mistakes.”

UTSA’s Owen McCown played a steady game, going 24-for-35 for 323 yards and an interception, with Devin McCuin leading the receiving corps with 94 yards on six catches. The Roadrunners amassed 405 yards of total offense compared to the Owls’ 294 but struggled on third downs, converting only 2 of 10 attempts.

The Owls will look to bounce back next week at home against Louisiana, taking with them lessons learned from a tough FBS opener.

Re: Coaching Career of Lee Williamson (CFB 25)

Rajun Cajuns Overcome 14-Point Halftime Deficit to Win at Kennesaw State, 20-17

Kennesaw, GA — In a thrilling home opener, the Kennesaw State Owls came up just short as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to secure a 20-17 victory on Saturday. The Owls, led by head coach Lee Williamson in their first season as an FBS program, displayed grit and resilience but were unable to hold off a late-game rally.

Kennesaw State (0-2) struck first, with Austin Welch nailing a 48-yard field goal midway through the first quarter. The Owls then extended their lead in the second quarter with a defensive highlight. Jayven Williams intercepted a pass from Ben Wooldridge and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown, giving the Owls a 10-0 advantage. It was the Owls' second interception of Wooldridge on the game after the senior signal caller was intercepted in the red zone on their first offensive drive of the game.

Louisiana (2-0) got on the board with a 57-yard field goal from Kenneth Almendares in the third quarter. Kennesaw State quickly responded, as Davis Bryson connected with Qua Ashley on a 39-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 17-3. The Ragin' Cajuns answered immediately on their first offensive play of their next drive, however, with a 75-yard touchdown strike from Ben Wooldridge to Harvey Broussard, bringing them within seven, and giving them their first touchdown of the game.

The fourth quarter belonged to Louisiana as they sharpened up their play and their superior talent and depth began to show. Wooldridge found Robert Williams on a 4-yard pass to tie the game at 17 with just over two minutes remaining. After forcing another Kennesaw State punt, Kenneth Almendares delivered the game-winning blow, drilling a 49-yard field goal with 20 seconds left that all but sealed the win. The Owls actually drove the ball to midfield with seconds winding down, but Davis Bryson's Hail Mary attempt was deflected out the back of the end zone and the Rajun' Cajuns held on for the win to move to 2-0.

Despite the loss, Kennesaw State's defense forced two turnovers, including Williams' interception return for a touchdown. Davis Bryson finished with 82 passing yards and a touchdown, also leading the Owls in rushing with 57 yards on 11 carries. More importantly, after throwing three interceptions last week, he didn't turn the ball over tonight.

“We had this one in our hands, and it just slipped away at the end,” said Williamson. “The guys fought hard, but we need to find ways to close games.”

The Ragin' Cajuns managed 320 yards of total offense, led by Ben Wooldridge’s 255 passing yards and two touchdowns. Broussard was the standout receiver with 102 yards and a touchdown.

The Owls will aim to capture their first win next week at San Jose State.

Owls Stifled by Spartans in 30-6 Loss

SAN JOSE, CA — Kennesaw State’s struggles continued Saturday as the Owls fell 30-6 to San Jose State, remaining winless through three games in their debut FBS season.

San Jose State (3-0) came out firing, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 3-yard run from Alex Messina and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Emmett Brown to Justin Lockhart. Kennesaw State (0-3) responded late in the quarter with a 43-yard field goal from Austin Welch, cutting the Spartans’ lead to 14-3.

In the second quarter, the teams traded field goals, with the Spartans’ Kyler Halvorsen connecting from 27 yards and Welch adding another 33-yard field goal for the Owls just before halftime. The Owls went into the locker room trailing 17-6, still within reach but struggling to find offensive rhythm.

The second half belonged to San Jose State. Messina added his second rushing touchdown in the third quarter, extending the lead to 24-6. The Spartans tacked on two more field goals in the fourth quarter, sealing the win as the Owls failed to put up any points in the second half.

Kennesaw State quarterback Davis Bryson finished 14-for-28 with 107 yards and two interceptions, giving him five through three games this season. On the ground, Michael Benefield led the Owls with 53 yards on 15 carries, while Bryson added 40 yards rushing. Qua Ashley was the top receiver with four catches for 21 yards.

“We need to execute better in all phases,” Owls head coach Lee Williamson said postgame. “The effort is there, but we’ve got to clean up the turnovers and start capitalizing on opportunities.”

The Spartans dominated on both sides of the ball, totaling 350 yards of offense while limiting the Owls to just 218. San Jose State’s defense forced three turnovers, holding Kennesaw State to 2-of-13 on third-down conversions.

Emmett Brown threw for 203 yards and a touchdown for the Spartans.

The Owls have next week off before hosting FCS foe UT Martin on September 28th.

You were not wrong when you said that the Owls had some questions at QB. A 5'9 QB has a hard enough time making plays when they are good, and Bryson isn't good. From the running yards, I assume he must at least have some running ability, but the Defense is going to were itself out if the Offense can't start producing more..

But going back to your Princeton days in College Hoops I know you love a good rebuild..

rough couple of games to start the season.

Got a feeling its going to take a few years to get the owls going. But GL!

Yeah, he’s basically a running back playing quarterback. He’s a great runner but when it comes to throwing the pigskin…he leaves some to be desired. Definitely hoping to nab a transfer QB.

Yeah, the good news is the team is young, so I think there is a window where we can improve a lot in year 3-4. And then maybe some better jobs will open up, we’ll see! I think we only have six seniors on the router, which is wild.

Skyhawks Stun Owls in 10-3 Defensive Battle, Handing Kennesaw State Fourth Straight Loss

KENNESAW, GA — In a frustrating outing for Kennesaw State, the Owls struggled offensively in a 10-3 loss to UT Martin, as their passing game faltered and their offense posted just 208 total yards. The Skyhawks capitalized on the Owls' offensive inefficiency, controlling the game’s tempo and, without their two turnovers, likely would have widened the final score significantly.

Kennesaw State’s passing game was nearly nonexistent, with quarterback Davis Bryson completing just 8 of 18 passes for a mere 42 yards and an interception. The Owls (0-4) were heavily reliant on their ground attack, where Bryson led with 77 rushing yards, and Michael Benefield added 64 yards. Still, Kennesaw State failed to convert those yards into points, with just a single field goal late in the fourth quarter.

The Skyhawks opened scoring with a 50-yard field goal by Tommy Gaines in the second quarter, and despite their own offensive errors, they maintained a steady lead. UT Martin's defense kept Kennesaw State out of the end zone and forced the Owls into third-and-long situations throughout the game, allowing only four third-down conversions on 13 attempts.

With the game tied at 3-3 late in the fourth quarter, UT Martin quarterback Davon Wingate-Wilson found Jalen Parrish Jr. for a 6-yard touchdown, putting the Skyhawks up 10-3 with just over three minutes remaining. The Owls’ offense couldn’t muster a response, concluding a disappointing day where they were outgained 403 to 208 in total yards, including a stark 193 to 42 discrepancy in the passing game.

“We didn’t execute in the passing game, plain and simple,” head coach Lee Williamson said. “The defense did what it could, but we’ve got to find a way to be more dynamic and efficient on offense if we want to compete.”

Despite the Owls' defensive resilience, UT Martin controlled the clock and moved the ball effectively, tallying 210 rushing yards and 20 first downs. With this loss, Kennesaw State falls to 0-4, and Williamson’s squad will seek answers as they continue to search for their first win. The Owls have a short turnaround as they open Conference USA play next Friday at home against Jacksonville State.
