Rebirth of the Big North Conference (BNC): A CAP Simulation Dynasty

Rebirth of the Big North Conference (BNC): A CAP Simulation Dynasty

(Hey guys. After getting several weeks into the previous incarnation of this CAP dynasty, I realized that I created an imbalance between the lower rated schools and the higher rated ones, which led to me deciding to restart the dynasty. The last couple of weeks, I have worked on reworking the teams to make them more balanced as well as ensuring that most if not all CAPs have a reasonable chance to start or contribute in their first season)

Hi everyone. After reading several of the great dynasties here,I have decided to start a CAP dynasty, but I'm putting an interesting twist on things. Getting my inspiration from mb625's Northern Athletic Conference thread, I'm planning to create a conference with 12 teambuilder schools that I created for this dynasty. A big undertaking for sure, but one that I believe has the potential to be great. Each school represents an area that does not have a FBS school. Here are the schools and the division that they will be located in.

    West Division
Alaska State Bears -Anchorage, Alaska (Green, Gold, Blue)
Vancouver State Tigers - Vancouver, British Columbia Canada (Orange, Black, White)
Victoria State Islanders - Victoria, British Columbia Canada (Green, Blue, White)
Billings State 49ers - Billings, Montana (Idaho Gold and Silver)
Bismarck State Rough Riders - Bismarck, North Dakota (Red, Black, White)
South Dakota Tech Storm- Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Orange, Black, Gray)

    East Division
Vermont State Timberwolves - South Burlington, Vermont (Green, Blue, Silver Gray)
Portland Tech Owls - Portland, Maine (Black, Gold, White)
Manchester State Kings - Manchester, New Hampshire (Purple, Black, Gold)
Providence State Titans - Providence, Rhode Island (Blue, Red, Yellow)
Delaware College Swedes - Wilmington, Delaware (Blue, Gold, White)
Columbia State Statesmen - Washington, DC (Red, White, Blue)

The BNC will take the place of Conference USA and will have a Championship game that will be most likely be played at the school with the best record. Here are the summaries of each school arranged by division in alphabetical order.

    Western Division

    Alaska State Bears
    Location: Anchorage, Alaska
Head Coach: Marty Odegaard , 42 years old
    Stadium: ConocoPhillips Stadium(46.692)
    Offense: Oregon
    Defense: Multiple
    Colors: Green, Yellow, and Blue

History: Despite being one of the most recent members of the BNC (having joined in 2009), the Bears have become one of the league's top teams. After last year's strong performance, Coach Odegaard's squad could be once again at the top of the Western Division. Led by senior quarterback Adrian Olsen and junior halfback Mickey Newman on offense and on defense by veterans junior free safety DeMario Hargrove and sophomore star cornerback James Harwell , the Bears will be tough to beat.

    Billings State 49ers
    Location: Billings, Montana
Head Coach: James White, 51 years old
    Stadium: Rimrock Stadium (46,692)
    Offense: Pistol
    Defense: 3-4 Multiple
    Colors: Gold, Scarlet, and White

History: One of the founding members of the BNC, the 49ers have always been one of the top conference teams. Under the leadership of longtime coach James White, the team has rarely had a down year. This year looks to be possibly their year as they return most of their starters on both sides of the ball. Led by senior quarterback Austin Chase on offense and by senior middle linebacker Caleb Page on defense, the 49ers will be a tough out this season.

    Bismarck State Rough Riders
    Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Head Coach: Peter Barnett, 37 years old
    Stadium: Rough Riders Stadium (30,076)
    Offense: Air Raid
    Defense: 3-3-5
    Colors: Red, Black, and White

History: A middle of the road team, the Rough Riders are about average all across the board. They have enough offense to keep up with most of the conference, which they need as the defense was one of the worst in the league last season. Coach Peter Barnett, an air-raid disciple of Mike Leach, is putting his faith in his junior quarterback Alex Robinson, who is on pace to break all of the passing marks at Bismarck. Meanwhile, senior CB Jaron Ratliff leads a defense that will hopefully do better this year than last year's unit. They will receive help from newly arrived freshmen left end Jack Jamison and defensive tackle Joe Yeboah.

    South Dakota Tech Storm
    Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Head Coach: Peter Franklin, 38 years old
    Stadium: Howard Wood Field (20,000)
    Offense: Option Run
    Defense: 4-3
    Colors: Black, Gold, and White

History: One of the middle of the road programs, the Storm have consistently been one of the best teams in the western division. The Storm, like many other teams in the conference, will be starting a new quarterback, sophomore Jevon Matthews. Coach Franklin believes that their offense under Matthews will not lose a beat after losing star quarterback Ikaika Pittman to graduation. On the defensive side of the ball, junior middle linebacker Jack Long leads a unit that returns most of their starters from last year's 9-3 team.

    Vancouver State Tigers
    Location: Vancouver, Canada
Head Coach: Chester Moody, 51 years old
    Stadium: BC Place
    Offense: Run and Shoot
    Defense: 4-3 Multiple
    Colors: Black, Orange, and White

History: One of the newest teams in the conference along with rivals Alaska State and Victoria State, Vancouver State have not had the same success as the Bears. Hovering between the bottom and the mid-tier teams, the Tigers must rely on freshman quarterback Vernon Parrish if they want to escape the basement of the Western Division.

    Victoria State Islanders
    Location: Victoria, Canada
Head Coach: Robert Taylor, 60 years old
    Stadium: Royal Athletic Park (20,000)
    Offense: Georgia State
    Defense: 3-4
    Colors: Green, Blue, and White

History: One of the newest teams in the conference, the Islanders are trying to find their way as a football team. Their longtime coach, Robert Taylor, who has been the only coach in the ten year history of the program, is on the hot seat after another 3-9 campaign. The team will be heavily depending on freshman running back Kennedy Hudson to help spark an offense that was one of the worst in the country last season. On defense, defensive tackle Rob McKeon lead an offense that must play better if they want to avoid another disappointing season.

    Eastern Division

    Columbia State Statesmen
    Location: Washington, DC
    Head Coach: Carl Evans
Stadium: FexEx Field (82,566 (I used MetLife to simulate the actual FedEx Field)).
    Offense: Spread
    Defense: Multiple
    Colors: Red, White, and Blue

History: Once one of the top programs in the conference, the Statesmen have fallen on hard times due to a scandal that nearly led the program to get hit with the "Death Penalty" by the NCAA. In the years since, the program have failed to have a winning record. With the hiring of Coach Evans and a move to FedEx Field from their former stadium, the future is looking bright. The freshman tandem of quarterback Patrick Parks and running back Devon Welch will be counted upon to lead their team to perhaps their best season in decades.

    Delaware College Swedes
    Location, Wilmington, Delaware
Head Coach: Travis Phillips, 32 years old
    Stadium: DuPont Stadium (20,000)
    Offense: One Back
    Defense: 3-4
    Colors: Blue, Yellow, and White

History: One of the worst teams in the conference, the Swedes hope that new coach Travis Phillips will change it around. With most of the starters gone from last year's team, it will be up to sophomore quarterback Jeremy Pratt, freshman running back Braylen Wright, and senior middle linebackerBrodie Terrell to lead the offense and defense.

    Manchester State Kings
    Location: Manchester, New Hampshire
Head Coach: Dale Talbert, 53 years old
    Stadium: Royals Stadium (30,000)
    Offense: Pro Style
    Defense: 4-2-5
    Colors: Purple, Black, and Gold

History: One of the most consistent teams in the conference, the Kings have done well enough to avoid the bottom of the conference, but not well enough to win its division. This year will be no different with the Kings breaking in a new quarterback in sophomore JaMarcus Moss who will be dependent on heavily. Freshman tight end Cody Cruise looks to be a solid target that Moss can lean upon. On the defensive side, senior middle linebacker Jose Porter returns to lead the defense.

    Portland Tech Owls
    Location: Portland, Maine
Head Coach: John Bryant, 52 years old
    Stadium: Fitzpatrick Stadium (29,419)
    Offense: Multiple
    Defense: 3-4 Multiple
    Colors: Black, Gold, and White

History: A team constantly among the middle third of the conference, the Owls hope to change that this season. A lot of hype is surrounding new freshman quarterback Frankie Leonard as he was named the starter over long-time backup Doug Powers. The Owls have possibly the best running back in the conference in senior Timi Sarria. On the defensive side of the ball, senior defensive tackle T.J. Pressley anchors an Owls defense that hopes to improve a run defense that was one of the worst in the conference last season.

    Providence State Titans
    Location: Providence, Rhode Island
Head Coach: Jack Darwin, 38 years old
    Stadium: Titans Stadium (71,068)
    Offense: Spread Option
    Defense: Multiple D
    Colors: Blue, Red, and Yellow

History: Considered to be the top team in the conference, the Titans have thrived under longtime head coach Jack Darwin. This year appears to be no different as the Titans bring back almost everyone from last year's conference championship team. Senior quarterback Alonzo Perez will have plenty of options as the Titans have possibly the best wide offense in the conference. Led by sophomore Dedrick Wolfe and freshman Matthew King, the depth at receiver is deep. Alongside Perez is freshman running back Dontae Brown, who is expected to pick up where last year's starter Mac Stuckey left off. On defense, senior middle linebacker Marcel Corbett leads one of the best defensive units in the conference.

    Vermont State Timberwolves
    Location: South Burlington, Vermont
Head Coach: James Thomas ,37 years old
    Stadium: Timberwolves Stadium (50,000)
    Offense: Run Balanced
    Defense: Multiple D
    Colors: Green, Blue, and Silver

History: One of the best teams in the conference, the Timberwolves have probably one of the top head coaches in the country in James Thomas, who was an assistant under Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. Under his watch, the Timberwolves became one of the nation's best offenses. With leading receiver Robin Brantley and leading rusher Luther Hester returning for their final seasons, freshman quarterback Jace Cooper will have plenty of options on offense. Freshman wide receiver Matt Viselli figures to see a lot of catches come his way as he is expected to start opposite Brantley. On defense, freshman outside linebacker Kenyon Marks joins senior outside linebacker D.D. Byrd and junior middle linebacker Broderick Justice, to form what is considered to be the best linebacking core in the conference.

    Recruiting Difficulty: All-American
    Coach Progression: Slowest
    Sliders: Charter04 Sliders

    Recruiting and Players Leaving

1). I can only recruit the number of seniors that are graduating plus 2 recruits during the season. I.E. This season, I have 16 seniors graduating. I also had two open scholarship left from last season. In this case, i can recruit 18 players to come up with an even 70 players.
2). If I over recruited (either by my own mistake or by the CPU thinking I needed to use all of my scholarships), the player(s) with the lowest awareness will be cut (as well as any CPU-signed recruits).
3). If a player is at least a 95 and decides to go pro, I will not try to convince him to return. If the player is between 90-94, I have one chance to try to convince him to return for another year. Anyone below 90, I will try to do what I can to keep them here.
4). If a player decides to leave, I will not stop him from leaving the program.
5). I can only redshirt true freshmen.

I will play in Coach Mode during the Dynasty. During each game, I will use the Ask Coach feature and select from the plays listed. As for the playbooks, I will stick with the ones that were selected for the team.

Here are a few rules involving CAPs as well as recruitment.

    CAPs and recruits
    1. You can have two recruits each at the start of the dynasty. Once one of your recruits leave, then you can create another.

    2. To determine your overall, I will roll two dice. With the base set to 70, your CAP's overall will be anywhere from 72 to 82 if Lady Luck shines on you. I will do the same for recruits as well. Based on your results, some CAPs could wind up starting for their teams.

    3. I will take up to 5 recruits per season. I will track each one during the season and will let you know what team they signed with.

    5. If the CAP/recruit makes it to the NFL, I will track their career as well.

Five Things to Watch at Big North Media Days
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
                  July 17, 2013 - 9:00 AM ET

Toronto, Canada -- Welcome to Big North media days.

After a long off-season, the beginning of the season starts with the arrival of Big North media days. In a few hours, the inside of the Four Seasons Hotel here in Toronto will be turned into a media circus as 1,000 media members from all across the United States and Canada will get a chance to speak with representatives from all twelve teams before casting their ballots at the end of the three day event.

Here are five things to keep an eye on this week in Toronto:

                  1. Experienced Teams: As we enter yet another season, one thing that is apparent is that most teams are bringing back their quarterbacks. With the exception of Billings State, Columbia State, Manchester State, Providence State, and Vermont State, everyone else is bringing back their starter. With the offenses that this league is known for, this could be a year to remember for the offenses of the conference.

                  2. Conference title contenders: With most teams bringing back key starters, we could be in for a thrilling race to see who wins the conference title. Billings State, Providence State, and Vermont State are among the contenders to win a conference title, but with a new starting quarterback, how will they fare once conference play begins? Meanwhile, Alaska State, Bismarck State, and South Dakota Tech all return their starters from last year, but with the losses of key players from last year's teams, will their new starters be enough to lead them to the title game? We will find out soon enough.

                  3. New coaching debuts: Two new coaches will make their debuts this season as Coach Carl Evans (Columbia State) and Travis Phillips (Delaware College) take over new jobs. While both Evans and Phillips are rising newcomers from the coordinator ranks, both know what it takes to win. Only time will tell if their respective school made the correct choice in hiring them, but I believe that the future of both Columbia State and Delaware College are bright.

                  4. Coaches on the hot seat: After a disastrous season last year, Vancouver State coach Chester Moody is feeling the heat after having failed to get the Thunderbirds to a bowl game during their first five years of existence. With another possible down year coming, Moody's time in Vancouver might be coming to an end barring a strong improvement.

Meanwhile, Robert Taylor is facing immediate pressure to resign at Victoria State after another horrible season. Taylor, 60, has been the only head coach in the Islanders history, but he has failed to make them a contender, which has led to calls from fans to call on the AD to force Taylor to resign.

Meanwhile, at Manchester State, Dale Talbert is beginning to feel the heat after failing to make it to a bowl game for a third consecutive year after having been to one the previous three years. Despite a show of support from the athletic director, another poor showing could mean increased pressure for his firing by a fan base that wants to contend for titles, not just for bowl games.

                  5. Rumors at Alaska State: With senior quarterback Buster Holiday returning for his final season in Anchorage, Coach Marty Odegaard's Alaska State is looking to return to the conference title game. However, there appears to be a rumor about him possibly looking to leave coaching to become the school's athletic director after finding out earlier this morning that Earl Fairbanks, the man that hired Odegaard 14 years ago to start up the Bears football program died earlier this morning after a long battle with cancer. If Odegaard does step down, it appears that offensive coordinator Martel Goodwin will take his place. Goodwin, as some of you may recall, played under Odegaard for four years before suffering a career-ending injury in his final game. Although a rumor, we will keep our eyes open when Odegaard and the Bears speak on Friday.

Steve Levy: Breaking news coming out of Toronto from Big North media days as Alaska State head coach Marty Odegaard is stepping down to take over the vacant athletic director position that opened up following the death of longtime AD Earl Fairbanks. With more on this story, we go live to Toronto where Big North reporter Dan Moore is standing outside the main lobby at the Four Seasons.

Dan, can you tell us why Odegaard is stepping down to take over the AD position?

Dan Moore: Good evening, Steve. The reason that Odegaard is stepping down came down to a couple of reasons.

First, he felt that he wanted to spend more time with his family. He has a son that has just begun playing high school football and he wanted to be able to catch all of his games, something that he wouldn't be able to do as a head coach.

Second, he feels that his offensive coordinator Martel Goodwin will be able to continue the work that they have started when he was hired by Odegaard last year to run the offense. Odegaard believes that Goodwin will maintain the focus that they had last year when they won the division title and use that momentum to repeat as conference champions.

Levy: How does this affect the Big North in terms of early season predictions?

Moore: Well, Steve, it appears that a lot of the media have Billings State winnning the division and facing off against Providence State for the Big North Title. When I asked some of the voters why they changed their picks, they all seem to believe that while the team will be good, they don't believe that Goodwin can lead them to the division title. Now this isn't a slight towards Goodwin, it just seems that we don't know much about him other than he spent a couple of years learning from new Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly and that he played under Odegaard.

Levy: We will have more on this story as it develops. Dan Moore, live at Big North media days. Thanks, Dan.

                    Moore: My pleasure.

Toronto, Canada -- Marty Odegaard announced during Big North media days that he is stepping down immediately after being named Alaska State's new athletic director. Odegaard, 42, will take over the position from long-time AD Earl Fairbanks passed away earlier this week at the age of 73 following a long battle with cancer.

As expected, Odegaard has already picked his successor in offensive coordinator Martel Goodwin.

"I feel that I have given the program the start it needs in order to compete in the Big North, Odegaard said when asked about why he was stepping down.. "I believe that I have done all I can for the program. With the unfortunate passing of AD Fairbanks, I feel that I could best serve the university by continuing the work that Earl started when he started up the Bears athletic department back in 1988."

Odegaard was hired in 1998 to be the head coach of a fledging program that was just starting out as an FBS independent in one of the most isolated regions of the country. 14 years later, Odegaard leaves the program with a mark of 94-83 and going 5-3 in bowl games.

Odegaard's teams have been defined by a punishing ground attack and stout defenses, both keys to the team's success during the second half of his tenure. His teams usually were ranked among the top three in conference with his defenses considered to be among the best nationally.

Odegaard brought in Goodwin, who played running back during his time at Alaska State before becoming a graduate assistant under Odegaard, to take over Alaska State's offense, which has consistently ranked in the top quarter of teams in the country in points scored and yards gained.

Following the death of Fairbanks, Odegaard approached Goodwin about taking over the position while they were heading to Toronto. The combination of family, his confidence in Goodwin, and the opportunity to become the athletic director for Alaska State convinced him that it was time for him to step away from coaching.
"Martel Goodwin is the right man to replace me," Odegaard said to reporters.

Senior quarterback Adrian Olsen said that the team will be in good hands with Goodwin taking over.

"I feel that Coach (Goodwin) will continue to carry on the work that Coach (Odegaard) started years ago," Olsen said. "I believe that Coach (Odegaard) have set us on the path to success during our time here. It will be up to us to continue down this path that he laid out for us when he recruited us years ago."

Goodwin, 27, played under Odegaard from 2005-2008 before an injury derailed his senior season. After his college career ended, he served as a graduate assistant before being hired as an assistant coach on Oregon coach Chip Kelly's staff. After two years of studying under Kelly, he was brought back by Odegaard last year.

"I am thankful for this opportunity to take over for a man that helped me to this point in my career," said Goodwin, who has no head coaching experience.

Odegaard said that he expected no problems in the transition and decided to make the decision now to avoid any issues before the season starts. This way, Goodwin will be able to focus on bringing in his first recruiting class.

Odegaard also has no plans to be a meddlesome athletic director, which follows the example that Fairbanks set when he hired Odegaard back in 1998.

Toronto, Canada - For most people, following behind a trailblazer is a daunting task. For new Alaska State head coach Martel Goodwin, it's just another day at the office.

Taking part in his first Big North media day session as the newest coach on the block, Goodwin had the media eating out of his palm as he walked into the meeting room at the Four Seasons, dressed in a black suit with a green and yellow tie. As he came to the podium, he received a standing ovation from the media as well as from his players in attendance, senior quarterback Buster Holiday and senior middle linebacker Brock Grigsby.

When the questions came, he fielded them like a pro. When asked about taking over from longtime coach Marty Odegaard, Goodwin said that, "First, I want to thank Coach Odegaard for offering me this opportunity. Last year, when he lured me back to Alaska State to lead the offense, I could sense that he had faith in my abilities to lead our offense down the field. When he came up to me last night and offered me the job, I couldn't say no."

When asked whether the team would keep the same style of offense that her brought to the team last year, he answered, "We will not deviate from what works. I believe in the saying, 'If it's not broke, don't try to fix it.' I feel that our offense will be better than it was last year."

When asked how would he be able to recruit to a school where it has been hard to recruit to, he replied, "It will be hard to get recruits to come here, but I believe that the work that we have accomplished during the last few years as well as the work that we do this season will help to attract the kids that we want for our program. I want players that want to be here, not because they are highly rated, but because they want to make a difference. I want those that want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. I want players that can look back at what they accomplished years later and tell their kids and family that they were a part of something great."

During the conference, Goodwin appeared poised and composed. Unlike the other new coaches that are taking on rebuilding projects, Goodwin inherits a team that is built for the unforeseeable future. Yet he knows that having a having a good team does not mean that another division title is automatic.

One thing is certain. Goodwin is a competitor and will do just fine at Alaska State.

Five Things we learned at Big North media days

                            Toronto, Canada --
After three days of talking and discussing all things Big North, we now focus our attention to fall practice, which starts in a couple of weeks.

As we get closer to the regular season, let's look back at the week that was with five takeaways from what happened here in Toronto:

                            1) Alaska State appears to be in great hands: When news of Marty Odegaard stepping down to take over the athletic director job hit, some people were skeptical about what the direction the program was heading. After meeting with both Odegaard and new head coach Martel Goodwin, our questions were answered as both men discussed the future of the Bears program. From listening to Coach Goodwin, it appears that the Bears will be just fine this season.

                            2) The pressure is on for Moody, Taylor: After yet another season of disappointment, Vancouver State coach Chester Moody and Victoria State coach Robert Taylor are both feeling the heat by not only their fans, but by their athletic directors as well. While Taylor admits that it has been tough to get recruits to come to Vancouver, he feels that the pressure will decrease once they win games. With this season possibly being his last, Moody must make a dramatic leap in wins if he expects to keep his job.

Meanwhile Taylor's time in Victoria could come to an end if the Islanders failed to improve on last season's 4-8 record, which included a deflating loss to the arch-rival Tigers. While the Islanders have been to a bowl game once in their 10 year history, they have yet to return to a bowl game, posting losing seasons for 7 of the 8 years since, including a dreadful 1-11 record in 2011. Many feel that Taylor's friendship with Victoria State AD Oliver Chance has kept him there for so long, but if there is no improvement, it's possible that Chance will be gone as well.

                            3) Orlando Sands stole the show: One of the best interviews from media days came from Bismarck State wide receiver Orlando Sands. When asked about what to expect this season from the Rough Riders, Sands replied "I feel that we have what it takes to make it to the conference championship. We have almost all of our starters back from last year's team and we feel that that experience will help guide us to the championship."

                            4) New coaches shined: While Coach Goodwin and Alaska State were the talk of the town, the other new coaches were able to hold their own as well. With Columbia State and Delaware College all replacing their coaches after dismal seasons last year, we got a chance to see their new coaches in person and they did not disappoint. Listening to both Coach Carl Evans and Travis Phillips talk about how to make their teams contenders again, I believe that both has what it takes to win. Only time will tell if they are the right choices for their schools, but for now, it looks like they made the right choices.

                            5) New network and TV deals announced: One thing that has being overlooked was the deal that the Big North made with ESPN to start up a new television channel dedicated to showing everything Big North. The channel, called the Big North Network (BNN), will launch within the next few years and will be shown nationwide. Along with the new television contract that was extended to 2027, the new deals are expected to bring in over $18 million to each school.

"The new network will bring Big North sports to everyone in the United States and Canada," Big North commissioner Tom Vance told reporters. "Our partnership with ESPN will bring us closer in line with everyone else in terms of coverage as well as introducing a new generation to the Big North. The future of the Big North is here and now."

A Look at the rivalries of the Big North

Good morning fellow readers. As we near the start of the football season, we plan to do things a little differently. With this being the 35th anniversary of the Big North Conference, I wanted to discuss the different rivalries that have made the Big North what it is today, as well as a few other rivalries that members of the conference have had against other teams in the FBS.

To discover each team's major rivals, we looked at the rivalries based on how competitive each one has been, how intense the rivalry is, and how each is faring.

                              Alaska State vs. Billings State
                              The Facts:
Alaska State leads the all-time series 6-4 with the Bears winning two of the last three.

                              Rivalry temperature: Boiling

Rivalry Nickname: "The Battle for the Golden Pickax"

One of the most well-known rivalry games in the Big North, the annual game have decided the six division titles since the conference split into two divisions in 2008. With both teams becoming major players in the Big North, this game has increased in importance for both teams, with each team having pep rallies prior to the games. With both teams expected to finish at the top of the division, look for this game to play a part in who goes to the conference championship game.

Most recent game: Alaska State 32, Billings State: 28 (2012) - With the Bears down 28-25 with 2:30 left in the game, no timeouts, and the division title up for grabs, Bears QB Buster Holiday leads his team down the field as he throws the game-winning score to freshman wide receiver Vincent McIntyre with 3 seconds left in the game.

                              Alaska State vs. Vancouver State
                              The Facts:
Alaska State dominates the series 4-1 and have won the last four after losing the first meeting.

                              Rivalry temperature: Cold

Rivalry Nickname: "The Battle for the Golden Salmon"

One of the newer rivalries in the league, not much can be said about this series as the Bears have dominated the last four games by an average of 21 points. The only bright side for the Tigers was last year's game in which they were tied at halftime before the Bears outscored the visitors 31-7 in the second half en-route to a 48-24 victory.

Most recent game: Alaska State 48, Vancouver State 24 (2012) - After Vancouver State tied the game right before halftime, Alaska State returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown and the rout was on, leading to a 24 point victory for the Bears.

                              Alaska State vs. Victoria State
                              The Facts:
The Bears lead the all-time series 7-3 and have won the last four games in the series.

                              Rivalry temperature: Cooling.

Similar to the Vancouver State series, the Bears have dominated the series in recent years by an average of 22 points. The Islanders have continued to struggle while the Bears have become one of the toughest teams in the conference.

Most recent game: Alaska State 44, Victoria State 7 (2012) - After Victoria drove down the field to take an early 7-0 lead, Alaska State kept the Islanders out of the endzone while outscoring them 44-0 en-route to the worst loss in the series.

                              Vancouver State vs. Victoria State
                              The Facts:
Victoria State dominates the series 4-1, but Vancouver State finally broke through last season.

                              Rivalry temperature: Lukewarm

Rivalry Nickname: "The Battle for British Columbia"

One of the newer rivalries in the league, the Islanders have dominated the series. The Tigers, after being blown out the first three games of the series, finally won last season's game and look forward to making it two in a row.

Most recent game: Victoria State 20, Vancouver State 14 OT (2012) - After Vancouver State tied the game right before halftime, Victoria State scored the game-winning touchdown on their first play of overtime to seal the win

Alaska State vs. Vancouver State vs. Victoria State
                              The Facts:
The Bears has won four out of the five years in the series that involves the three northern schools in the conference. Vancouver State won the first game in the series.

                              Rivalry temperature: Ice cold.

Rivalry Nickname/Trophy: "The Arctic Bowl" (Arctic Cup)

The Arctic Cup was established in 2008 when all three teams joined the Big North Conference by the ADs of the three schools. After Vancouver State won the first trophy, Alaska State has since dominated the series, often in blowouts. It might be a while before the series really hits its stride.

The next few rivalry games are part of a series of games known as the Missouri Valley Rivalry. Each of the three teams (Billings State, Bismarck State, and South Dakota Tech) have a long, rich history with each other as they all started their programs around the same time.

                              Billings State vs. Bismarck State
                              The Facts:
The 49ers lead the all-time series 28-17, winning 12 of the last 15 in the series.

                              Rivalry temperature: Warm, but steady.

One of the oldest rivalries in the conference, both schools have played each other since Billings started up their program in 1968. Prior to the 49ers rise, the series was mostly even with both teams trading wins. While the 49ers have risen to top level status, the Rough Riders have struggled to remain relevant. While the 49ers are poised to be among the best teams, the Rough Riders look to be in for another year of average football.

Most recent game: Billings State 41, Bismarck State 13 (2012) - Alex Robison's first start as the Rough Riders quarterback ended horribly as he threw five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns as the 49ers won handily.

Billings State vs. South Dakota Tech
                              The Facts:
The 49ers lead the series 30-15, but the Storm have won four out of the last five meetings.

                              Rivalry temperature: Warm, but rising.

The 49ers have dominated this rivalry, winning 2-to-1, but the Storm have won four of the last five, including last year's meeting in Sioux Falls. With both teams competing for the top spot in the West, this game will get more important as the season progresses.

Most recent game: South Dakota Tech 31, Billings State 24 - River Hawks quarterback Ikaika Pittman threw for a then-career high 432 yards, ran for 120 yards and was responsible for all four of South Dakota Tech's touchdowns as they won on a Jimmie Sharp 52 yard field goal as time expired.

Bismarck State vs. South Dakota Tech
                              The Facts:
The Storm lead the series 35-28 and have won the last three meetings.

Rivalry Nickname: "The Battle for Dakota" (The Dakotas Trophy)

                              Rivalry temperature: Hot and bubbling.

One of the most underrated rivalries in all of college football, "The Battle for Dakota" have featured tight games with the last 15 games of the series decided by a combined 45 points (or 3 points a game). In terms of hatred for the other fanbases, this rivalry ranks up with the Alabama/Auburns of the world, with many people fighting after games. Expect each game to go down to the wire as both teams will do whatever it takes to win.

Most recent game: South Dakota Tech 21, Bismarck State 20 - In yet another close game in the rivalry, the Rough Riders lost after their team was unable to get the field goal kicking team up before the clock expired, leading to Rough Rider fans throwing stuff onto the field at the officials as the Storm escaped Bismarck with the win.

The next set of games are from the Eastern Division.

                              Columbia State vs. Delaware College
                              The Facts:
A very-tight rivalry series, Columbia State leads the series 51-49, but they have lost 15 of the last 20 meetings against the Swedes.

Rivalry Nickname: Battle for the Flag (Swede/Statesman Flag)

                              Rivalry temperature: Warm

Once a prominent rivalry as well as one of the conference's longest rivalry games, the game have been dominated by the Swedes during the last two decades following the near-destruction of the Statesmen football program. With both teams breaking in new coaches, the rivalry could possibly be reborn if both coaches are able to make their teams competitive.

Most recent game: Delaware College 23, Columbia State 20 (2012) - Darrick Ortiz caught 14 passes for 156 yards and the game-winning touchdown with 1:13 left as the Swedes stung the Statesman to win their fifth straight game in the series.

                              Columbia State vs. Maryland
                              The Facts:
