    Week 2 BNC Predictions
Dan Moore and Jamie Choi - ESPN BNC Bloggers
    Sept 4, 2014 - 11:00 AM EDT

I got to stop doubting Alaska State. Once again, I felt that the game would be too big for the Bears, but somehow they managed to pull through.

With everyone playing this week, let's look at the games this week.

    Alaska State @ Arizona State

Choi: One of the biggest non-conference games of the year for the Big North, Alaska State has had a good record against non-conference opponents in the past six years. With the Bears riding a wave of momentum, I don't see the Sun Devils stopping them in this game. I'm picking the Bears to win 31-17

Moore: Interesting points, Jamie. I'm going with the Bears in a close onem for one reason: Revenge. Even though Arizona State will be at home, I feel that the Bears defense will have something to prove after playing horrible last week. I also expect running back Mickey Newman to come out with a vengence after leaving last week's game with an injury. I'm picking the Bears to win 34-21.

    Bismarck State @ #6 Georgia

Choi: One of the more intriging games of the week, the Rough Riders will open their season up against the Bulldogs of Georgia "Between the Hedges." While I think that Bismarck can hold their own against Georgia, I feel that the home crowd will be enough to lift the Bulldogs to a win. I'm picking Georgia to win 31-20.

Moore: An interesting pick, Jamie. I like where you are going with that pick. I feel that the Rough Riders will have issues stopping the Bulldog rushing attack, led by Heisman candidate Todd Gurley. I'm also going with Georgia, but I believe that this game will not be close. 41-17 Bulldogs.

    Billings State @ NC State

Choi: After the horrible season that the Bulldogs suffered last season, they come into the season with a lot to prove. Facing off against a team that many feel will struggle to make a bowl game, I feel that the 49ers are due for a win. I'm picking Billings State to win 21-17.

Moore: While I want to pick the 49ers, Jamie, something tells me that the Wolfpack are not going to be pushovers this season. I expect them to come out and dominate the 49ers rebuilding defense and put pressure on quarterback Marty Gonzales to beat them. I'm picking NC State to win 31-17.

    South Dakota Tech @ Maryland

Choi: With the Storm coming off of their worst season in Franklin's tenure as head coach, a lot of pressure will be on Franklin to right the ship this year. While I expect quarterback Jevon Matthews to be better than he was last year, I don't think that will be enough to defeat Maryland at home. I'm expecting the Terrapins to win 38-17.

Moore: I agree with you, Jamie, but I feel that the score will be closer than you realize. I know that Matthews is still learning the offense and that the defense is a work in progress, but I believe that the Storm will get enougn stops on defense to make the game interesting. I'm picking Maryland to win the game 27-20.

Consensus picks: Air Force over Columbia State, Delaware College over UC Davis, Manchester State over New Hampshire, Portland Tech over Villanova, Providence State over Jacksonville, #14 Michigan State over Vancouver State, Vermont State over Coastal Carolina, and Victoria State over Southern Illinois

    Current standings
    Choi: 1-0
    Moore: 0-1

No. 23 Alaska State cruises to 40-14 win over Arizona State
      Associated Press

      Tempe, AZ --
Mickey Newman rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Von Hawthorne threw for 201 yards, threw for his first touchdown ofthe year, and ran for another as Alaska State used a 40-7 spurt to cruise past Arizona State 40-14

Newman, who missed most of last week's upset win over defending national champion BYU after getting knocked out early in the game, showed up in a big way, using his speed and power to gain yards and kept the Bears on the move.

The Bears (2-0) ran more this time compared to last week, rushing for 282 yards on 62 carries. Arnold Hart, who received most of the carries last week, rushed for 87 yards and a score on 21 carries while Antwain Cobbs caught the first touchdown pass of the season for the Bears.

D.J. Porter rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries for the Sun Devils (0-1), who played without starting quarterback Taylor Kelly for most of the game after he was knocked out early in the second quarter following a sack by Bears defensive tackle Jamie Shaw.

Micheal Eubank completed 6 of 9 passes for 39 yards and a touchdown in relief of Kelly, who completed 6 of 11 passes for 43 yards before he left the game with a concussion.

After stopping the Bears on a fourth-and-one on the ASU 33 yard line, Porter took the handoff and ran 66 yards to give the Sun Devils their own lead of the game at 7-0 with 3:33 left in the first quarter.

After a Matt Smith field goal make the score 7-3, the Bears began their run late in the second, thanks to Newman's two touchdown runs that gave the Bears a 17-7 lead at halftime.

In the third, the Bears continued to pour it on the Sun Devils. Midway through the third quarter, Hawthorne ran in from two yards out to increase the lead to 24-7. After forcing the Sun Devils into another three-and-out, Hawthorne hit Cobbs on a 62 yard pass down the sideline to make the score 31-7 with a minute left in the third.

Late in the fourth, after allowing a safety and a touchdown to Hart, the Sun Devils finally scored after Eubank hit

Big North Conference Review: Week 2
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
        September 7, 2013 - 8:00 AM ET

Looking back on yesterday's action across the Big North Conference, let's look at what happened:

Big North Conference Week 2 Scoreboard
        Results
        #23 Alaska State 40, Arizona State 14
        Portland Tech 35, Villanova 20
Victoria State 24, Southern Illinois 12
Maryland 35, South Dakota Tech 21
        #6 Georgia 49, Bismarck State 17
Vermont State 31, Coastal Carolina 17
Air Force 38, Columbia State 17
NC State 27, Billings State 24
        Providence State 34, Jacksonville 14
Delaware College 38, UC Davis 0
New Hampshire 28, Manchester State 21
        #14 Michigan State 42, Vancouver State 7

Looking at the scores, most of the teams that were favored to win won. A couple of games surprised us. In particular, the game between Manchester State and New Hampshire caught us off guard. You have to give the Wildcats credit for beating the Kings in a tough environment. They limited tight end Cody Cruise to 46 yards on 8 catches and a touchdown, and forced Kings quarterback JaMarcus Moss to pass it to other players, as well as forcing him into turnovers that eventually lost them the game.

Here is how everyone did for Week 2:

Bismarck State - Lost to #6 Georgia 49-17
        DE Jack Jamison -
        2 Tackles (1 Solo), 1 TFL

DT Joe Yeboah - 7 Tackles (4 Solo), 4 TFL, and 2 Sacks

Columbia State - Lost to Air Force 38-17
        QB Patrick Parks -
15 of 33 for 178 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Also had 10 carries for 19 yards.

HB Devon Welch - 15 carries for 51 yards, 3 receptions for 46 yards and 2 touchdowns, and 3 kick returns for 60 yards

Delaware College - Defeated UC Davis 38-0
Braylen Wright - 18 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown and a catch for 29 yards

Manchester State - Lost to New Hampshire 28-21
        TE Cody Cruise -
8 receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown

Portland Tech - Defeated Villanova 35-20
        QB Frankie Leonard -
14 of 32 for 196 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception. Also had 18 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown. (CAP of the Week)

Providence State - Defeated Jacksonville 34-14
        HB Dontae Brown -
17 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown

WR Matthew King - 7 catches for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns

Vancouver State - Lost to #14 Michigan State 42-7
        QB Vernon Parrish -
14 of 27 for 118 yards and two interceptions. Also had 10 carries for 56 yards

Vermont State - Defeated Coastal Carolina 31-17
        QB Jace Cooper -
16 of 27 for 174 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Also had 9 carries for 50 yards.

HB D.J. Porter - 5 carries for 33 yards, 2 kick returns for 39 yards, and 2 punt returns for 0 yards

WR Matt Viselli - 7 catches for 66 yards, 1 kick return for 18 yards, and 2 punt returns for 32 yards

ROLB Kenyon Marks - 6 Tackles (2 Solo) and one pass deflected

Victoria State - Defeated Southern Illinois 24-12
        HB Kennedy Hudson -
10 carries for 42 yards and one reception for six yards.

Before I go, let's look at the other0 players that we're focusing on this season.

        #3 Alabama - Won 27-17 over #15 Oklahoma
        SS Derek Forgarty -
        No Stats

        #15 Oklahoma - Lost to #3 Alabama 27-17
        WR George Burns -
1 catch for 11 yards, 5 kick returns for 75 yards, and 2 punt returns for 4 yards

Florida - Defeated Eastern Michigan 42-7

Re: Rebirth of the Big North Conference (BNC): A CAP Simulation Dynasty

What we learned in the BNC: Week 2
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
          Sept 8, 2013 - 9:00 AM ET

With the season starting for most of the Big North, I've looked at the results of yesterday's games and came up with the following conclusions:

          1. Bears are rounding into form: After struggling against BYU last week, Alaska State's defense was all over the place yesterday, knocking out Arizona State's starting quarterback Taylor Kelly and holding the Sun Devil offense to14 points. Even though they still gave up a good bit of rushing yards, the line was able to get more pressure on the quarterbacks, getting seven sacks on the day as well as a safety in the victory. With a well-deserved break ahead of them, the matchup with the Titans once again looks to be a must-see game.

          2. Matthew King continues his pace from last season: After finishing with the second-most yards in the conference last season, Providence State wide receiver Matthew King is already looking to best those numbers this year. In yesterday's game against Jacksonville, he had 132 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries. With the Titans playing against a weak Memphis defense, I expect King and running back Dontae Brown to show out.

          3. Non-conference embarrassment: Despite Alaska State's win over Arizona State, the conference failed to take advantage, losing every other game to a major conference opponent, and even a loss to an excellent FCS team in New Hampshire. If the conference wants to play with the big boys, the teams need to start winning more against the top teams and avoid losing to the worst teams.

          4. Trouble for Evans, Moody?: Yesterday saw both Columbia State and Vancouver State suffer bitter losses to tough opponents. For Statesmen coach Carl Evans, a man that is already feeling pressure to win, this was the worse result as the offense could not get things moving and the defense failed to stop the triple option of the Falcons.

As for the Tigers, coach Moody managed to buy some time for his team to turn it around, but after yesterday's 42-7 beatdown by #14 Michigan State, it may be time to make a change. This will be Moody's seventh season as head coach and he has yet to hit six wins. I feel that both he and Evans will be fired at the end of the year if things don't improve.

          5. Swedes, Islanders get important wins: Both Delaware College and Victoria State took care of business yesterday, beating their FCS opponents without issue. Of the two, I have to be impressed with Delaware's win over UC Davis. They pitched their first shutout in four years yesterday and played decently. On the other side of the coin, the Islanders managed to hold off Southern Illinois and managed to take advantage of missed opportunites that the Salukis failed to score on.

Now that we talked about yesterday's games, let's look at the key games this weekend.

Northwestern vs. Delaware College (8:00 PM EDT on ESPN) - Both teams come in expecting to compete in their divisions. With a win, the Swedes could set themselves up for a special season while the Wildcats could spoil their season with a loss.

Louisiana Tech vs. Vancouver State (8:00 PM EDT on BNN) - After getting blown out by Michigan State, the Tigers will host the Bulldogs in a critical game for them as they hope to avoid another 0-2 start to their season. Will we see any improvement from Parrish after the rough start to his season or will the Bulldogs make things difficult for the Tigers?

Middle Tennessee State @ Columbia State (3:30 PM EDT on ESPN U) - Another critical game for Coach Evans and the Statesmen as they face off against a Middle Tennessee team in search of their first win. If the Statesmen fail to win this week, it may be a while before they win again as they must face off against #3 Alabama the following week.

Here is this week's schedule of games for the conference:

          Big North Week 3 Schedule
          Results
Portland Tech @ #3 Alabama (12:30 PM EDT on SEC Network)
Manchester State @ San Jose State (3:30 PM EDT on BNN)
Ball State @ Billings State (6:00 PM EDT on ESPN U)
Providence State @ Memphis (6:00 PM EDT on BNC)
Northwestern @ Delaware College (8:00 PM EDT on ABC)
Louisiana Tech @ Vancouver State (8:00 PM EDT on ESPN 3)
Middle Tennessee State @ Columbia State* (3:30 PM EDT on ESPN U)

          * Game will be played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore due to the Washington Redskins game finishing up before gametime.

Now that each team has played at least one game, let me introduce the Big North Power Rankings:

Big North Power Rankings: Week 2
          1) Alaska State (2-0)-
After playing two tough opponents on the road, the ranked Bears will get a well deserved bye before facing Providence State at home in two weeks.

          2) Vermont State (1-0) - After an impressive win over Coastal Carolina, the Timberwolves will take their final bye of the season before beginning a tough two game homestand against #8 Ole Miss and #23 Alaksa State.

          3) Providence State (1-0) - After a good win, the Titans will head on the road to Memphis to take on the Tigers in what should be a tune-up game before their big showdown with Alaska State.

          4) Billings State (0-1) - Despite losing to NC State, there were some positive signs from the 49ers. The fact that the team was close in this game tells you that they are close to getting things right. However, Marty Gonzales needs more help from his offense as they failed to get anything going down the stretch. If the team is to return to a bowl game, they need to improve quickly.

          5) Manchester State (0-1) - After losing a tough game to one of the better FCS teams in the country, the Kings are looking for answers. Their defense, which was one of the better defensive units in the conference last season, did not do enough to stop the Wildcats at all. Add to the fact that Cruise was locked down for most of the game and you have this result. I expect to see the Kings take down San Jose State in San Jose this coming week.

          6) Delaware College (1-0) - Continuing their success from last season, the Swedes dominated UC Davis from start to finish. Pitching the first shutout of the season, Delaware College looks to extend their streak against Northwestern.

          7) Bismarck State (0-1) - After being considered a dark horse to win the Western division, the Rough Riders looked anything but Saturday after losing to the Bulldogs 49-17. Todd Gurley ran for 173 yards and a touchdown, the defense as a whole was unable to stop the Georgia offense, and the offense was unable to keep up with their counterparts. The Rough Riders get a needed bye week to sort things out before a home game against Iowa State in a couple of weeks.

          8) Portland Tech (1-0) - The Owls managed to get a good win against a strong Villanova team Saturday, thanks to the efforts of quarterback Frankie Leonard, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for one in the win. The reward for winning your opener: a road trip to Tuscaloosa to face the #3 Crimson Tide.

          9) Victoria State (1-0) - The Islanders managed to pull off the win against the Salukis of Southern Illinois. The Islanders looked impressive, but I need to see more from them as the season goes on. They will take a bye week before facing off against Buffalo.

          10) South Dakota Tech (0-1) - The Storm lost a tough game on the road to Maryland 35-21. From the game, you can see some improvement compared to last year's 4-8 team. Jevon Matthews must limit his turnovers to give his team the chance to win these kind of games in the future. The Storm will take a bye before opening up conference play against Manchester State.

          11) Columbia State (0-1) - After a horrible year last season, it appears that this season will be no different for the Statesmen as they opened the season with a 38-17 loss to the Falcons. While the offense has shown some resemblance of life, the defense has regressed badly. While I like coach Evans and feel that he walked into a tough situation, I didn't expect it to become this bad. Next week's game against Middle Tennessee State should tell us a lot about this team and what to expect for the rest of the season.

          12) Vancouver State (0-1) - Of all the losses, this was the most predictable, especially on the road. The Tigers were dominated from start to finish and quarterback Vernon Parrish looked lost at times during the game. The Tigers return home to face Louisiana Tech.

As we did last weekend, let's look at the three recruits that we discussed to see where they stand.

First is the top recruit in the country, J. W. Greyvenstein. After three weeks, it seems that Alaska State has a big lead over his second choice, Michigan. Providence State is close behind for third, followed by Billings State, Ohio State, Vermont State, and USC. Alaska State and Michigan are the only two who have offered a scholarship and with the way it's looking, it will come down to these two.

*Alaska State - Leader (36% Lock)

Quarterback Jerrod Pope's list remains the same as Arizona State continues to be the top team on his list, followed by Michigan, BYU, Kentucky, Utah, and Wake Forest. The Sun Devils are the only school to offer a scholarship.

Since last week's report, not much has changed as BYU remains the top school on wide receiver Andre Howe's list, with Oregon, California, Alabama, and Texas A&M close behind. No school has offered him, but I'm sure that will change as the season progresses.

          BYU - Leader (18% Locked)
          Oregon - 225 behind
          California - 284 behind
          Alabama - 335 behind

Porter will definitely see the majority of the special team reps, but he will get some carries from time to time, especially with how much the team runs the ball. The starter in front of Porter is a junior, but with how the offense is run, I believe that Porter will still get a lot of touches.

Looking back at the first week of the college football season, most of the top 25 teams in the nation won their first game while some took an early bye week. Let's look at the scores from the weekend:

                Top 25 Scoreboard Week 2
                Results
                #1 Oregon 52, Wyoming 35
                Cincinnati 39, #2 Ohio State 35
                #3 Alabama 27, #15 Oklahoma 17
                #4 Auburn 37, San Jose State 7
                #5 Louisville 31, Marshall 26
                #6 Georgia 49, Bismarck State 17
                #7 Texas A&M 35, SMU 3
                #8 Ole Miss 34, UL Lafayette 0
                #12 UCLA 40, #10 Washington 28
                #11 USC 31, Boston College 10
                #13 Missouri 40, South Dakota State 7
                #14 Michigan State 42, Vancouver State 7
                Memphis 41, #18 BYU 27
                #20 Iowa 28, Pittsburgh 7
                #21 Nebraska 38, Fresno State 10
                #22 Notre Dame 37, Syracuse 14
                #23 Alaska State 40, Arizona State 14
                #24 Miami 48, Florida A&M 16
                #25 North Carolina 34, Utah State 27

As you can see, four ranked teams lost, highlighted by #2 Ohio State losing to in-state opponent Cincinnati 39-35 in a game that saw the Buckeyes lose their starting quarterback Braxton Miller to a broken tailbone. The team is now down to their third quarterback after backup J.T. Barrett was lost to a broken ankle in Week 1.

The other big loss was BYU's shocking loss to the Memphis Tigers who came into the matchup at 0-1. With the loss, BYU not only falls out of the Top 25, but their chance to repeat looks to be over.

Now let's look at the new coaches poll that came out Sunday:

                Dropped Out: BYU (#18)

With Ohio State falling from 2 to 11, Alabama moves up to 2, followed by Auburn, Louisville, and Georgia.

Cincinnati joins the Top 25 for the first time, coming in at #23. Meanwhile, after another loss, BYU falls out of the Top 25. This loss will most likely cost them their chance to repeat as champions.

Meanwhile, the Big North Conference announced their top players from last week's games. Here are the top players in the BNC from last week.

After week 2, the Heisman Watch list remains the same at the top as all three players played yesterday. Desipte Manziel's poor performance against SMU, he managed to hold off both Gurley and Mariota, both of which had better games.

Two new candidates join the group for the first time: Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace and Alabama QB Blake Sims. Wallace, despite the poor passing, managed to score four total touchdowns as Ole Miss shut out UL Lafayette 34-0. While not having a good passing performance, Sims managed to score three touchdowns for the Crimson Tide as they took down Oklahoma 27-17.

                  Week 3 BNC Predictions
Dan Moore and Jamie Choi - ESPN BNC Bloggers
                  Sept 11, 2014 - 11:00 AM EDT

After two weeks of action, I've managed to tie Jamie (thanks NC State) and almost had a perfect week had Manchester State defeated New Hampshire.

But enough about my near-perfect picks last week, let's look at the slate of games this week. With many teams off this week, we'll look at the most interesting games for this week.

Manchester State @ San Jose State

                  Choi:
With both teams coming off of losses, this game will be critical for both squads. While I'm not sure of how good the Spartans are, I believe that the Kings will come out on fire and dominate this game. I'm picking Manchester State to win 35-17.

Moore: Interesting points, Jamie. I'm also going with the Kings in this one, despite traveling three time zones. I feel that the Kings are a much better team than the Spartans, and I believe that it will show in this game. I'm picking the Kings 38-10.

                  Providence State @ Memphis

                  Choi:
In what looks to be a tuneup game before their game against Alaska State next week, the Titans head into the matchup very confident. Despite the fact that Memphis defeated the defending champions last week, I still believe that the Titans have too much firepower for the Tigers to handle. I'm picking the Titans to win 41-21.

Moore: Interesting points, Jamie. The Titans are focused on getting revenge against the Bears, but first, they must take down a Bears team that dominated their game against the Cougars, doing a much better job than the Bears did a week prior. Nevertheless, the Tigers doesn't have enough skilled players to deal with the likes of Dontae Brown and Matthew King, both of which I believe will have a great game. I'm picking the Titans to win 41-17.

                  Northwestern @ Delaware College

Choi: One of the best games on the schedule this week, I feel that this will be a season-defining game for the Swedes who managed to exceed all expectations last year. This game will come down to whoever has the ball last. With both teams having good quarterbacks, I feel that the Wildcats, with more experience, will defeat the Swedes in a close contest. Northwestern wins 31-28.

Moore: Interesting points, Jamie. I'm going with the Swedes in this one. Northwestern is a good team, but I feel that with a home crowd ready to erupt, I feel that the Swedes will pull if off, thanks to a good offense and a tough defense. Like you, I feel that the game will be close, but I'm going with the Swedes to win 27-24.

Middle Tennessee State @ Columbia State (In Baltimore)

                  Choi:
With the game being played in Baltimore instead of DC, I feel that this is a must-win game for Evans as he enters the game with a 4-9 record. Nothing seems to go right for the Statesmen who has some interesting pieces, but can not seem to get anything going. While I feel that the Statesmen will figure it out later, I feel that the Blue Raiders will win in a low scoring game 17-10.

Moore: While I agree that this is a must-win for Evans, I feel that the Statesmen will find some way to win. I agree that the offense has not improved, but I feel that the defense has somewhat regressed compared to last season. While I want to pick them, I feel that the Blue Raiders have more going for them in this matchup and thus, I will pick them to win 21-10.

Consensus picks: #2 Alabama over Portland Tech, Ball State over Billings State, and Louisiana Tech over Vancouver State

Big North Conference Review: Week 3
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
                    September 15, 2013 - 8:00 AM ET

Looking back on yesterday's action across the Big North Conference, let's look at what happened:

Big North Conference Week 3 Scoreboard
                    Results
                    #3 Alabama 48, Portland Tech 23
Manchester State 24, San Jose State 14
Ball State 26, Billings State 10
                    Providence State 35, Memphis 14
                    Northwestern 27, Delaware College 23
Louisiana Tech 48, Vancouver State 23
Middle Tennessee State 14, Columbia State 3

Looking at the scores, three games surprised me the most. The Billings State-Ball State game is perhaps the biggest surprise due to the result. While both me and Jamie picked the Cardinals to defeat the 49ers, we didn't expect the game to end this way. If this team doesn't fix the issues that they have, this could be it for coach White. While White has done great things for the university, the last few years have not been kind to the 49ers faithful and it could be a matter of time before people call for him to step down.

The second game, the Northwestern-Delaware College game was more surprising due to how competitive the Swedes were. Yes, they lost, but the fact that they were leading late before a late field goal gave the Wildcats the win shows that the Swedes are well on their way to competing with the rest of the conference.

The final game, the Columbia State-Middle Tennessee game shows that the run with former player-now coach Carl Evans might come to an end sooner than expected. Although the Blue Raiders only scored 14 points, the fact that your offense could only muster three points is pathetic. Whether it's the coaches or the players, it's ovbious that this is not going to work out for either party and that it might be best for both Evans and the school to go their separate ways.

Here is how everyone did for Week 2:

Columbia State - Lost to Middle Tennessee State 14-3
                    QB Patrick Parks -
8 of 24 for 88 yards. Also had 14 carries for 16 yards

HB Devon Welch - 12 carries for 59 yards and 3 receptions for 30 yards

Delaware College - Lost to Northwestern 27-23
                    Braylen Wright -
23 carries for 81 yards, 3 catches for 29 yards, and one kick return for 18 yards

Manchester State - Defeated San Jose State 24-14
                    TE Cody Cruise -
2 carries for 11 yards and 8 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown

Portland Tech - Lost to #2 Alabama 48-23
                    QB Frankie Leonard -
13 of 34 for 175 yards, a touchdown, and an interception

Providence State - Defeated Memphis 35-14
                    HB Dontae Brown -
14 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. Also had one catch for 30 yards

WR Matthew King - 10 catches for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns (CAP of the Week)

Vancouver State - Lost to Louisiana Tech 48-23
                    QB Vernon Parrish -
16 of 32 for 272 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Also had 17 carries for 70 yards

Before I go, let's look at the other players that we're focusing on this season.

#2 Alabama - Won 48-23 over Portland Tech
                    SS Derek Forgarty -
                    One tackle

Re: Rebirth of the Big North Conference (BNC): A CAP Simulation Dynasty

What we learned in the BNC: Week 3
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
                      Sept 15, 2013 - 9:00 AM ET

With the season starting for most of the Big North, I've looked at the results of yesterday's games and came up with the following conclusions:

                      1. Titans ready for the Bears: After getting down 14-7 on the road to a Memphis team that defeated the defending national champs, Providence State finished the game off on a 28-0 run to blow out the Tigers. Sophomore receiver Matthew King put up the best performance of his career with 234 receiving yards and three touchdowns, all career highs. With the Tigers out of the way, the stage is set as both the Bears and the Titans arrive with identical 2-0 records. Whoever wins will not only have bragging rights, but also an early lead in their division.

                      2. Matthew King continues his pace from last season: After another strong showing by the Titans receiver, I feel that King is making an early case for Big North Player of the Year. He currently leads the league with 366 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 17 catches. I feel that by the end of the season, King could possibly be a dark horse in the Heisman race as well as making a case for several awards.

                      3. The hot seat is heating up: After last week's results, one would hope that Billings State, Columbia State, and Vancouver State would show some sign of life this week against managable opponents. But as the games showed us over the weekend, These three teams appear to be at the bottom of the conference. Of the three coaches that are on the potential hotseat, White's seat looks to be heating up after a disappointing loss to Ball State. While White could afford another loss or two, neither Evans or Moody can afford to lose more games.

                      4. Swedes look impressive in loss: Despite losing to Northwestern Saturday, Delaware College more than held their own against the Wildcats. The Swedes matched up with the Wildcats evenly and it showed during the game. You can definately notice how much the team improved since coach Phillips took over last season. I expect these guys to possibly contend with the top teams in the east this season.

Now that we talked about yesterday's games, let's look at the key games this weekend.

#6 Ole Miss vs. Vermont State (6:00 PM EDT on ESPN 2 (9/19)) - After a bye week to prepare, the Timberwolves face their toughest challenge of the season as they host an Ole Miss team that survived a tough game against Florida. Bo Wallace is having a great start to the year for Ole Miss as he has thrown 9 touchdowns to no picks. On the other side, the Timberwolves look to win their 17th game in a row behind their strong defense and powerful offense.

Delaware College @ Billings State (1:00 PM EDT on ESPNU) - One of the most interesting games of the week features two teams going in different directions. Delaware College looks to avenge last year's 45-14 defeat at the hands of the 49ers who are struggling to find out who they are. Will the 49ers return to form or will the Swedes look to steal one in Billings?

Providence State @ Alaska State (3:30 PM EDT on ESPN) - Both teams look to start 1-0 in conference play as both teams meet again for the second year in a row and four times in three years, with Alaska State winning the last three meetings. The high-powered offense of the Titans will face a defense that forced seven sacks in their last game against Arizona State.

Here is this week's schedule of games for the conference:

                      Big North Week 4 Schedule
                      Results
#6 Ole Miss @ Vermont State (6:00 PM EDT on ESPN 2 (9/19))
Portland Tech @ Rice (12:30 PM EDT on BNN)
Delaware College @ Billings State (1:00 PM EDT on ESPNU)
Providence State @ #18 Alaska State (3:30 PM EDT on ESPN)
Buffalo @ Victoria State (3:30 PM EDT on ESPN 3)
Manchester State @ South Dakota Tech (3:30 PM EDT on BNN)
Columbia State @ #2 Alabama (6:00 PM EDT on SEC Network)
Iowa State @ Bismarck State (6:00 PM EDT on ESPN 3)

Let's now look at this week's Big North Power Rankings:

Big North Power Rankings: Week 3
                      1) (LW: 1) Alaska State (2-0) - After a week of rest and practice, the Bears look ready to take on the Titans in their first home game of the season Saturday afternoon (or 11:30 in Anchorage). With both offenses hitting their strides, which team will be the first to blink?

T2) (LW: 2) Vermont State (1-0) - Another team on a bye week, the Timberwolves prepare for perhaps the biggest regualr season game in school history as they host #6 Ole Miss for a rare Friday night game. I expect a lot of points to be scored in this one.

T2) (LW: 3) Providence State (2-0) - Afteranother good win, the Titans now turn their focus on their biggest game (other than Vermont State) of the season as they travel across the country to Anchorage to take on a tough Bears team at home. I expect either King or Brown to have a great game.

                      4) (LW: 5) Manchester State (1-1) - After losing a tough game to one of the better FCS teams in the country, the Kings answered back against the Spartans in a 24-14 victory. While star tight end Cody Cruise has not dominated like he did last season, it can only be a matter of time before he does it again.

                      5) (LW: 6) Delaware College (1-1) - Despite losing last week, I decided to rank them above Billings State, their next opponent, due to how competitve they have been this season. If they can beat the 49ers on the road Saturday, I believe that the Swedes will get a bowl game this season.

                      6) (LW: 4) Billings State (0-2) - Many were hoping that the 49ers struggles would only be temporary. However, with the loss to a decent Ball State team, Billings State has lost their first two games of the season for the first time in 10 years. With a team that is going downhill fast, the 49ers must find a way to correct their fall before it become too much to overcome. Saturday's game against the Swedes should let us know more about this 49ers team.

                      7) (LW: 7) Bismarck State (0-1) - After getting a bye week, the Rough Riders will look to get on the winning side of the column this week against regional foe Iowa State. While the defense got destroyed against Georgia, the offense did little to help. Will the team bounce back against an Iowa State team that is good, but not great or will their slide continue.

                      8) (LW: 9) Victoria State (1-0) - After a bye week to get everyone healthy and on the same page, the Islanders will host Buffalo Saturday afternoon. If the Islanders can win, this will be only the second time that the team has won their first two games to start the season.

                      9) (LW: 8) Portland Tech (1-1) - After winning against Villanova, the Owls were trampled by the Crimson Tide last week 48-23. The Owls were never in the game as the Crimson Tide outscored the Owls 28-3 in the first quarter to put the game on ice early. The Owls will travel to Houston to take on the Rice Owls in what some people in Houston are calling "The Battle of the Owls."

                      10) (LW: 10) South Dakota Tech (0-1) - After a rough loss to start the season, the Storm will be looking to win their first game when they face off against Manchester State. Quarterback Jevon Matthews will need to play much better than he did a couple of weeks ago if they want to defeat the Kings.

                      11) (LW: 11) Columbia State (0-2) - After getting blown out by the Air Force, the Statesmen lost a tough game to Middle Tennessee State 14-3. While the defense played better than they did last game, the offense continues to struggle. With a game against #2 Alabama this week, I expect a similar result if not worse if the team is not prepared.

                      12) (LW: 12) Vancouver State (0-2) - Another bad loss, this time against Louisiana Tech. After hanging around for a quarter, the Bulldogs scored 24 points in a row to put the game out of reach. The Tigers got to within 14, but could pull no closer as the Bulldogs closed the game out with a 17-6 run. The Tigers will get a well-needed by before traveling to Providence State in two weeks.

As we did last weekend, let's look at the three recruits that we discussed to see where they stand.

First is the top recruit in the country, J. W. Greyvenstein. After four weeks, it seems that Alaska State is starting to pull away from his second choice, Michigan. Providence State is closely behind Michigan for third, followed by Billings State, Ohio State, Vermont State, and USC. Alaska State and Michigan are the only two who have offered a scholarship and with the way it's looking, it will come down to these two.

*Alaska State - Leader (48% Lock)
                      *Michigan - 1,735 behind
                      Providence State - 1,975 behind
                      Billings State - 2,195 behind
                      Ohio State - 2,250 behind
                      Vermont State - 2,350 behind
                      USC - 2,450 behind

After four weeks, it appears that Arizona State will land quarterback Jerrod Pope. The Sun Devils have separated themselves from the rest of the pack and it seems that he will sign with them soon. Michigan, BYU, Kentucky, Utah, and Wake Forest round off the rest of his list.

*Arizona State - Leader (46% Lock)
                      Michigan - 2,185 behind
                      BYU - 2,259 behind
                      Kentucky - 2,419 behind
                      Utah - 2,589 behind
                      Wake Forest - 2,614 behind

Since last week's report, not much has changed as BYU remains the top school on wide receiver Andre Howe's list, with Oregon, California, Alabama, and Texas A&M close behind. No school has offered him, but I'm sure that will change as the season progresses.

                      BYU - Leader (18% Locked)
                      Oregon - 219 behind
                      California - 275 behind
                      Alabama - 330 behind
                      Texas A&M - 425 behind

                      * Denotes scholarship offer

Looking back at last week's Top 25 games, most of the top 25 teams in the nation won their games while a couple suffered bad losses to rivals or conference foes. Let's look at the scores from the weekend:

As you can see, nine ranked teams lost, highlighted by #4 Louisville losing to in-state rival Kentucky 31-26. Other bad losses included USC's loss to Washington State, Missouri's no-show against UCF, and ECU once again dominating North Carolina.

Now let's look at the new coaches poll that came out Sunday:

UCF, coming off of an impressive win over Missouri, jumps into the Top 25 at 17, while Tennessee enters the poll at 20, tied with Cincinnati.

Meanwhile, both Notre Dame and North Carolina fall out of the poll following defeats to in-state rivals.

Four weeks into the season, the Heisman Watch list remains the same at the top as both Manziel and Gurley remained in the top two spots following big wins. Meanwhile, both Bo Wallace and Black Sims moved up following Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota's disappointing game against Michigan State.

A new player enters the list as UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley appears on the list for the first time after an impressive win against Texas. He will look to stay on the list this week as the Bruins face off against a touch Utes team that has played well so far this season.

                          ==================================
After spending the first two weeks away from home, the 18th ranked Alaska State Bears host their first home game of the season against the 2-0 Providence State Titans in the conference opener for both teams. While the Bears are coming off of a bye week, the Titans demolished Memphis last weekend behind a big game from wide receiver Matthew King as he had 234 yards and three touchdowns on 10 catches as Providence State won 35-14 over Memphis.

The Bears enter the matchup with the team's best offense, which has scored an average of 38.5 points per game, going up against a Titans defense that has only given up an average of 14 points this season. One person that the Titans must watch out for will be Newman, who ran for nearly 200 yards and two touchdowns in their game against Arizona State two weeks ago. If the Titans want to win, they must limit Newman and force quarterback Von Hawthorne to beat them.

On the other side of the ball, the Bears will have a hard time with an offense that features two all-star players in Brown and King. Both players, along with Marquardt, will be hard to stop as each has all-pro talent. If the Bears hope to win this one, they must force Marquardt to throw to someone else or find a way to limit the damage that Brown and King will do to the defense.

One key injury that could affect the game is Titans starting free safety Youdlain Hawthorne, who is out with turf toe. For a defense that has played well this season, this is a big loss for this game as he has played well thus far this season.

Dan Moore and Jamie Choi - ESPN BNC Bloggers
                            Sept 18, 2014 - 11:00 AM EDT

After catching up to Jamie last week, I lost thanks to Northwestern pulling off the comeback late in the game. Other than that, it was a very predictable week.

With conference play now starting, let's look at this week's games.

                            #6 Ole Miss (3-0) @ Vermont State (1-0) (9/19)

Choi: This is perhaps the biggest non-conference game of the year for the Big North as the defending champion Timberwolves get to tangle with one of the top SEC teams in the Rebels in what should be an interesting game tomorrow. With both teams looking impressive, I believe that the home field advantage will be too much for the Rebels to overcome. I'm picking the Timberwolves to win 38-35 in a shootout.

Moore: Not so fast, my friend. I feel that the Rebels will win and I'll tell you why. Ole Miss has already played three games so far, including a tough game against Florida last week. I feel that the Timberwolves, with they only playing one game so far, will overlook the Rebels. So far Bo Wallace has not shown any signs of Bad Bo this season, and I belive that it will stay this way this week as the Rebels win 42-24.

                            Delaware College @ Billings State

Choi: After another bad loss, Billings State limps home to face a Delaware College team that was one play away from being undefeated. I don't know what has happened to the 49ers, but I don't believe that it will end this week. I've got the Swedes winning 27-14.

Moore: I agree with you on this one, Jamie. Whether it's the loss of talent this season, or a new quarterback taken over, but this is not the 49ers team that I remember a couple of seasons ago that nearly made the conference title game. This team lacks direction and I feel that Delaware College will make them pay this week. I've got the Swedes winning 21-10.

Providence State @ #18 Alaska State

Choi: After a week off the #18 Bears will have their first home game of the season Saturday against the Titans, a team that they have dominated 3 out of the last four meetings. I feel that the extra week off, plus the home crowd, will give the Bears a 34-21 win over the Titans.

Moore: An interesting pick. This is a tough game for me to pick due to how both teams have played so far. With this being the first home game for the Titans, I will give the home team a slight edge, 28-27.

Consensus picks: Portland Tech over Rice, Victoria State over Buffalo, Manchester State over South Dakota Tech, #2 Alabama over Columbia State, and Bismarck State over Iowa State.

                            Current standings
                            Choi: 18-2
                            Moore: 17-3

(Sorry about the lack of updates. I've have been busy with work as well as celebrating my birthday last week, but I'm nearly caught up on all the updates, so I will hope to get a few more updates this week.)

Newman, Alaska State pull away from Providence State
                              Associated Press

                              Anchorage --
Mickey Newman, coming off of a 195 yards, 2 touchdown performance against Arizona State, rushed for 168 yards and two scores, Arnold Hart rushed for 72 yards and a score, Von Hawthorne threw for another score, and #18 Alaksa State dominated Providence State 41-14 in the Big North opener for both schools.

Newman, who had rushed only five times in the season opener against BYU due to injury, has had 71 carries the last two games, both blowout wins for the Bears (3-0, 1-0 Big North). Hawthorne completed 18 of 23 passes for 181 yards, and Tyrell Conley had 198 total yards and a receiving touchdown as the Bears improved to 5-1 in conference openers.

Dontae Brown had 63 rushing yards and a touchdown for Providence State (2-1, 0-1) who falls to 1-4 all-time against the Bears. Mitchell Marquardt completed 18 of 24 passes for 153 yards and an interception to go along with 65 rushing yards and a touchdown while Matthew King, who had a career best 234 yards and three touchdowns last week, led all receivers with 86 yards on six catches.

After holding Alaska State to a field goal early in the game, Marquardt led Providence State down the field, capping the long drive off with a one yard run into the endzone to give the Titans a 7-3 lead.

Not to be outdoned, the Bears drove down the field. Keeping the Titans off balanced, Hawthorne connected with a wide open Conley, who made a spectaular diving catch in the endzone to give the Bears a 10-7 lead with 2:07 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuring drive, Marquardt's pass to wide receiver Dedrick Wolfe was picked off by Bears cornerback Bradley Singletary, who returned the ball 39 yards to the Titans 32 yard line. Despite the good field position, the Bears were only able to muster a field goal by Matt Smith to give them a 13-7 lead early in the second.

After a couple of three-and-outs by both teams, Providence State was looking to score when Marquardt was sacked by defensive tackle Jamie Shaw, causing a fumble. Safety Quincy Tucker scoops up the fumble for what appeared to be a touchdown. After a discussion by the refs, the call was overturned and the Titans were forced to punt following another sack by Shaw.

On the ensuring drive, the Bears ran the ball down the Titans throats, mixing in the pass when needed. Following a big run by Newman that gave the Bears a first and goal at the Titans 5 yard line, Hawthorne ran it in himself to give the Bears a 20-7 lead with less than five minutes to go in the half.

Following a good return, the Titans managed to answer back, thanks to a couple of big catches by King and Wolfe. On a first-and-goal from the Bears 3 yard line, Brown powered his way into the endzone to get within 20-14 before the end of the half.

The third quarter saw both teams struggle to do much on the offensive side of the ball. Near the end of the quarter, Newman managed to score his first touchdown from four yards out to give the Bears a 27-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Newman's second score with 7:43 left put the game away for Alaska State as Providence State's offense was unable to get anything going.

Hart's score, a 40 yard run to the outside with over four minutes left, put an exclamation point on what turned out to be a dominating day for the Bears.

Looking back on yesterday's action across the Big North Conference, let's look at what happened:

Big North Conference Week 4 Scoreboard
                                Results
                                #18 Alaska State 41, Providence State 14
                                #6 Ole Miss 52, Vermont State 23
                                Rice 35, Portland Tech 21
Delaware College 27, Billings State 3
South Dakota Tech 34, Manchester State 17
                                Alabama 37, Columbia State 0
Iowa State 28, Bismarck State 26
Victoria State 33, Buffalo 27 OT

For the third time in four games, Alaska State defeated Providence State in a game that was close for three quarters before the Bears put the game out of reach in the fourth. Mickey Newman continues to show that he is among the best running backs in the nation with another two touchdown performance to go with his 168 rushing yards.

It also pains me to see, but the Big North hasn't done well in out of conference play in the last few years. After yesterday's 0-4 performance, the conference is 9-15 against non-conference opponents. If the conference seeks to become one of the top conferences in college football, every team needs to win their non-conference games.

Finally, it's sad to see how far Billings State has fallen as they lost 27-3 to Delaware College, who has been perhaps the biggest surprise in the Big North this season. Once again, the 49ers struggled to move the ball against a very potent Swede defense, which coming into the game, ranked as the top defense in all of college football. While the 49ers continue to struggle, we got to show more love to the Swedes who are looking more and more impressive each game. I look forward to see what they do next week against a Victoria State team that has also impressed this season.

Here is how everyone did for Week 4:
